The Space Hijackers pride themselves on creative and artistic forms of protest — often against police abuse. They were a bit surprised to learn that citizens can easily confuse a person in red high heels, frilly stockings, and a helmet for a police officer. Members of the group of anarchists and street performers have been charged with impersonating officers.
In one performance, the group obtained a rundown personnel carrier and rode around with plastic machine guns while speakers blared the Ride of the Valkyries. Some were wearing bras while others wore jumpsuits. In this picture, the group asks viewers to find the real police officer, who appears to be writing them the citation.
What is astonishing is that the British police have spent considerable amounts of money investigating and prosecuting the group, including hundreds of hours of time for personnel.
The arrests include Leah Borromeo, 30, a freelance writer arrested wearing a black bra and boiler suit and insists that “[i[f I’m guilty of anything it’s of impersonating a stripper, not a police officer.”
It is not clear what the English prosecutors would do with these street performers who impersonate both the police and the protesters:
