Hiram Monserrate attracted statewide attention in New York as one of the Democrats who defended “traditional marriage” and “family values” in recently voting down a bill that would have made same-sex marriage legal the state. His concept of family values was questioned after he was sentenced for assaulting his girlfriend Karla Giraldo. Monserrate slashed Giraldo’s face and dragged her through the lobby of his Queens apartment building. Good old family values from the Paleolithic Period.
Monserrate, an ex-Marine, was reportedly upset after he found another man’s business card in her purse. The glass broke against her face, cutting her near her left eye down to her skull and left a lasting scar.
He was originally charged with two felony counts and two misdemeanor counts of assault but acquitted him on the two felony assault charges. The evidence included a security video camera that showed Monserrate dragging Ms. Giraldo through the lobby of his apartment building and medical statements showing extensive bruises on her body.
He convicted on a single count of misdemeanor assault, which could carry a maximum of one year behind bars. But, as a first time offender, Queens Supreme Court Justice William Erlbaum gave Monserrate three years’ probation, 250 hours of community service and counseling

Naomiah:
I did do some pretty stupid stuff at 25 so you are probably right a Mulligan is in order.
I actually did not know the story was 25 years old or that he was 25 at the time, the one I read made it seem like it was only a few years ago, no more than say 5.
Sorry Buelah. I’ll try to keep my karma away from your dogma and off your meme. 😉 lol Safety first.
Yes I’ve made lots of mistakes in my past, however I do not hold a position such as Mr Jennings does.
I don’t suppose we can go back to pointing out that smashing your girlfriend in the face with a bottle and then dragging her through a hotel is wrong?
IN fact, a good amount of the problems that get diagnosed here relate back to the two party (as in “No choice”) system, and corruption from lobbyists and campaign finance.
Oh, shit, BiL. You just hit my meme.
No, but your reaction shows exactly why trolls towing the Neocon line would run to his defense.
We’re equal opportunity around here. We’ll bad on bad guys from either party. Too bad you kool-aid swillers haven’t got the good sense to pick up on that yet.
Our loyalty here (in general) is to the Constitution, not either retarded and corrupt political party. IN fact, a good amount of the problems that get diagnosed here relate back to the two party (as in “No choice”) system, and corruption from lobbyists and campaign finance.
I know. Terribly inconvenient for those pushing an agenda of divisiveness.

“After all, they can point and say “BAD DEMOCRAT!”. But they aren’t.
And why exactly would trolls want to distract from the failings of a Democrat?”
Saying “Bad Democrat” is an attempt to attribute his actions to that of the entire party. It’s just like Professor Turley’s reasoning for identifying Monserrate as an ex-Marine.
These childish games need to stop. Being a Democrat had nothing to do with the vile actions of Monserrate, and neither does his status as an ex-Marine.
In the political climate of today, that ship will likely sail, but I refuse to be a member of the crew.
I have known Kevin Jennings for almost 30 years. He did not “have sex” with a 15 year old, he counseled a 15 year old student on his relationship with an older man. He has since admitted it was bad judgment. It was something he did 25 years ago, when there were absolutely no guidelines for counseling glbt students. Did you made any mistakes prior to being 25 years of age?
Learn the facts before you spew. Kevin was a fantastic teacher, and is well respected in the GLBT community. I have met his partner, and believe me, he is not a kid.
I founded a GLSEN chapter, and I am straight. Notice “straight” is right in the name.
I leave it to you to figure out the meaning. The other reason is some people don’t get the chance to see inside a court room anymore. Just a reminder.
Just like many other folk who cannot express their lunacy.
BTW: the clip only showed a still picture. Thanks for showing us what a courtroom “looks” like.
Prof Turley, What is the price for troll food, anyway?
And that’d be because you said so, eh bdatroll?
Every time you’ve said “explosion”, it hasn’t really worked out that way. Aesop has a lesson for you.

Buddha:
“Unless you’d like if someone said you should be allowed to be an engineer because you like women. Because that’s what you are doing to Nelson. Telling him he can’t be an educator because he’s gay.”
No I am not, I am saying his bad decision is what is questionable. When a child comes to you for advice when he/she is having sex with an adult you don’t tell them to use protection and be done with it.
His sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Byron,
Man am I glad you realized what you were signing on to. I thought you’d taken the Blue Pills again for a moment.
If you don’t think Jennings aspires to have sex with children you ain’t seen nothing yet. Just like climategate there’s a hole bunch about to be revealed.
None of this changes the fact that a Senator expects to get to remain a Senator after displaying such bad and criminal behavior. That he was a Neocon enabling blue-dog Democrat should be a cause for troll celebration. After all, they can point and say “BAD DEMOCRAT!”. But they aren’t.
And why exactly would trolls want to distract from the failings of a Democrat?
“Despite his role in switching control of the New York State Senate to Republicans, Monserrate remains a Democrat.” – Wikipedia.
Can’t bite the hand that feeds you in the Empire State. Even if that hand belongs to the woman beating enemy.
Hypocrisy anyone? How about some distraction?
BuelahMan, “Leave it to Beaver” might be more on point. :>)
I am considering posting old Perry Mason shows without explanation….
Byron:
I agree.
Buddha:
I see what you mean, I re-read bdamans post and he is indeed implying the Mr. Jennings is a pedophile. I was actually just commenting on the story I had read about him (Jennings) and the 15 year old boy and his instruction to the boy to use protection.
Maybe I am going overboard but I think the guy was wrong to tell that child to use protection. He should have told the child to not have sex with an adult. Maybe he did, but that is not the story I read. From what I read he had a very cavalier attitude about this young boys concern(s).
That is what I am responding to. Had he told the boy don’t have sex with an adult and/or reported the adult to the authorities or confronted the adult and told him to leave the boy alone, I would say he is an appropriate candidate for that position.
He did not and so I don’t think he is the right person for the position. His sexual orientation is not the issue at least in my opinion, but his bad decision is.
