Prehistoric Family Values: Senator Who Defended Traditional Marriage Is Sentenced for Slashing Face of Girlfriend and Dragging Her Through the Apartment Lobby

Hiram Monserrate attracted statewide attention in New York as one of the Democrats who defended “traditional marriage” and “family values” in recently voting down a bill that would have made same-sex marriage legal the state. His concept of family values was questioned after he was sentenced for assaulting his girlfriend Karla Giraldo. Monserrate slashed Giraldo’s face and dragged her through the lobby of his Queens apartment building. Good old family values from the Paleolithic Period.

Monserrate, an ex-Marine, was reportedly upset after he found another man’s business card in her purse. The glass broke against her face, cutting her near her left eye down to her skull and left a lasting scar.

He was originally charged with two felony counts and two misdemeanor counts of assault but acquitted him on the two felony assault charges. The evidence included a security video camera that showed Monserrate dragging Ms. Giraldo through the lobby of his apartment building and medical statements showing extensive bruises on her body.

He convicted on a single count of misdemeanor assault, which could carry a maximum of one year behind bars. But, as a first time offender, Queens Supreme Court Justice William Erlbaum gave Monserrate three years’ probation, 250 hours of community service and counseling

  1. Don’t you think that most red necks, as you refer to me, upon deciding to conceive a child would want to know if they carried the gene?

No, this redneck would not. And most rednecks I know would not.

It is only the most shallow minded and callous of thought that do.

  2. Really, and exactly where can someone go to get tested for this gene?

Has anyone publicly stated that they were tested and they have the gene?

Don’t you think that most red necks, as you refer to me, upon deciding to conceive a child would want to know if they carried the gene?

The discovery of a gay gene is a myth.

“Answers to Your Questions for a Better Understanding of Sexual Orientation & Homosexuality,”

“There is no consensus among scientists about the exact reasons that an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay or lesbian orientation. Although much research has examined the possible genetic, hormonal, developmental, social, and cultural influences on sexual orientation, no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors. Many think that nature and nurture both play complex roles. …”

Sounds like Global Warming, but wait for it, it’s cummin

On April 14, 2003, the International Human Genome Consortium announced the successful completion of the Human Genome Project—two years ahead of schedule. The press report read: “The human genome is complete and the Human Genome Project is over”
The one piece of information that never materialized from the Human Genome Project was the identification of the so-called “gay gene.”

The human X and Y chromosomes (the two “sex” chromosomes) have been completely sequenced. Thanks to work carried out by labs all across the globe, we know that the X chromosome contains 153 million base pairs, and harbors a total of 1168 genes (see NCBI, 2004). The National Center for Biotechnology Information reports that the Y chromosome—which is much smaller—contains “only” 50 million base pairs, and is estimated to contain a mere 251 genes. Educational institutions such as Baylor University, the Max Planck Institute, the Sanger Institute, Washington University in St. Louis, and others have spent countless hours and millions of research dollars analyzing these unique chromosomes. As the data began to pour in, they allowed scientists to construct gene maps—using actual sequences from the Human Genome Project. And yet, neither the map for the X nor the Y chromosome contains any “gay gene.”

No, I certainly am not a geneticist, but thank God I’m smarter than a 5th grader. If you think there’s no gay gene, you might be a red neck. Thanks Jeff

Because homosexuals don’t reproduce wouldn’t this cancel homosexuality out?

Think dog humping your leg *snicker* and good luck to you

  3. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/dec/01/homosexuality-genetics-usa

    From the article:

“Sven Bocklandt, a geneticist at the David Geffen school of medicine at UCLA, is bewildered by the argument that people choose their sexual attraction. He said that virtually every animal species that has been studied – from sheep to fruit flies – has a small minority of individuals who demonstrate homosexual activity.”

Yeah, there’s no genetic link . . . except the one found by our own government’s research and geneticists at UCLA.

Again with no facts yet you think people should take you seriously. Unless you’re a geneticist instead of a bigot that is, but given your track record *snicker* . . . good luck selling that one.

  4. “homosexuality is a biological fact”

Are you saying that all homosexuals are born that way?

“Those who regard homosexuality as a choice and a moral evil have chosen to ignore science, and are outraged that gays should be treated as human beings in literature or in society.”

My problem is with the promoting of the sexual acts either discussed or thru drawings for the ages that have been discussed here.

As far as biological science there is no gene that was ever discovered in the genome project to indicate one is gay at birth.

  5. Is there any doubt there are fascists in both parties now?

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-12-07-swine-flu-vaccine_N.htm

2012 needs to be the death knell. Not of America and the Constitution, but to both political parties that have ruined the system. R, D, every day that distinction is less and less relevant over the fact that Washington is full of sell outs and criminals from the House to the White House.

For giving the corporations preferential health treatment on H1N1 shots, I give the Obama Administration . . . the finger.

Up yours, fascists. There is NO other explanation than you are fascists for this action. NONE. Democrat? You’re a liar. Republican? You’re a liar. YOU ARE ALL ON THE TAKE AND SHOULD BE BEATEN TO DEATH IF ONE CHILD DIES FROM H1N1. That’s not hyperbole. It’s what you deserve.

When you in Washington are looking your death right in the angry composite mob eye, remember, it was petty and obviously criminal shit like this that led to the Fall. You politicians are too stupid and arrogant to realize you’re cutting your own throats every time you do something like this. I don’t mean that as a figure of speech either. One day, one day soon, you’ll do what your corporate masters ask and people will simply start dragging you from your posh graft furnished offices and hanging you from the cherry trees on the Mall. Just like what happened to your hero Mussolini.

    Enjoy.

It’s going to be your own doing. Congress and the White House should really consider that ultimately you’re critically outnumbered by the people you are ABUSING. It WILL come back to haunt you. It’s just a matter of when.

When you do get bit, don’t come crying to me. Because I don’t to have to kill you. I also don’t have to save the despoilers of the Constitution either. All I have to do is put on the popcorn and laugh while Washington burns, returning to its natural state where you Senators and Representatives and other ass-kissing sell out schumcks should feel right at home: a swamp.

Thomas Jefferson would be holding the torch right now if he were alive. And he’d start burning at K St. and work his way in. If we had a leader of such character, I’d be right behind him too at this point.

So screw you, Washington Fascists, and your buddies at GoldmanSacks (a company which manufactures NOTHING) and Toyota (they aren’t even an American company morons – proving the only orders you follow are the ones paid in cash, you greedy bastards).

At the rate you’re going, the day the streets run red with politician’s and lobbyist’s blood will be a national holiday when this is all over.

I won’t lift a finger to save ANY politician.

I won’t shed a tear when the shit hits the fan.

I’ll bake a cake since that’s what you’ve told us to eat.

Then I’ll pass it out to the hungry and the sick over your unmarked graves.

This will be the price of your myopic shortsighted stupidity and venal natures. You are building your own path to doom. I’m just the road sign.

  6. The reaction to Kevin Jennings is, at best, overwrought. The truth is that homosexuality is a biological fact that cannot be legislated out of existence, regardless of how much effort is constantly put into doing so. Those of us of a certain age will recall when black children first started popping up in grammar school readers, to the chagrin of many. The purpose was to begin educating children to the idea of equality, and it was a worthy endeavor. It is hardly surprising that there has been an increase in the number of books for children which seek to help kids understand that there are gays in many families and in all walks of life, and that children should not feel threatened or afraid of that fact. Those who regard homosexuality as a choice and a moral evil have chosen to ignore science, and are outraged that gays should be treated as human beings in literature or in society. Too bad.

  7. WTF does the ongoing smear campaign against Kevin Jennings have to do with any of this?

The young man in question (counseled “I hope you’re using condoms” ISTR) was of a legal age at the time, so the only evident argument being made is “OH NOES, HE IS TEH GAY!”. Right, they didn’t even bring in the Pope’s campaign to promote HIV by smearing condom use. So it’s clear that homosexuality — at least, as a Democrat who is Out, vs a closeted Republican — is the sole issue here.

Which is … ludicrous, in terms of reasonable debate.

  8. Flipkid:

“The relgious right has your back from the womb to the delivery room.”

    great line.

  9. “It seems similar to the abortion debate in that the Right is concern of the unborn until they are actually born and then its everybody for themselves.”

You got it, Jay. The relgious right has your back from the womb to the delivery room. After that… you’re on your own.

  10. Just out of curiousity, is it really hipocracy since they were not married and therefore not family?

It seems similar to the abortion debate in that the Right is concern of the unborn until they are actually born and then its everybody for themselves.

    Gotta love family values!!!

  11. Doh! Whelan. Sorry about fat fingering typing your name, Michael! Big fan of your work.

  12. Flip,

I’m sure it comes from the same drive that leads to Ancestor Worship, and exoticism of all other sorts.

  13. roflol, flipkid

I have it on good authority that Michael Wheelan is the love child of Norman Rockwell and Frank Frazetta.

  14. “Personally I think most family values people are suffering from a case of Good Ol’ Days syndrome, and are trying to get back to some mythical past that never really existed.”

Oh. My. God. I thought I was the only person in the world who thinks that Norman Rockwell paintings are actually illustrations for Science Fiction novels.

  15. Galub,

Man are you antagonistic. I figured that it would be a nice point of agreement between rational people (unlike a certain highly politicized event that happened a quarter century ago the full details of which are probably never really going to be known).

This isn’t about left or right. Guy abuses the woman he’s dating he has to turn in his “human being” card. Now if people agree on that starting point, it can lead to a discussion about if his actions are hypocritical in regards to his political stances. Alternately we could have a discussion about if said actions are symptomatic of a belief system in which women are perceived as somehow belonging to the man.

Personally I think most family values people are suffering from a case of Good Ol’ Days syndrome, and are trying to get back to some mythical past that never really existed. I also think that Rcampbell has a point that “Family Values” has become a euphemism for a wide variety of positions, some of which have absolutely nothing to do with the value a society places on family.

See, that’s how we play nice. Care to join me at the grown up’s table, or are you going to keep acting like an angst filled teen that no-one really gets?

  16. Byron,

    In re Questionable Decisions.

I think naomiah hit the nail on the head. He was a young counselor with no guidelines for the situation he found himself in and he improvised. Bad decision? By her (?) post a bad decision even by Jenning’s standards. The implication being he’d handle it differently today.

Is not wisdom the mistakes that we learn from?

Bad decision. I’ll grant you that and that it merited closer examination. But the rest is all sound and fury designed to distract from the fact that a Neocon enabler expects to remain Senator after acting as he did. That’s what bdaman’s stated goal is here – to disrupt. I’m not above giving him enough rope to hang himself either.

These are the same people who during the run up to the Bush Fiasco said, “Who cares if he was busted for cocaine and a drunk! I’d like to have a beer with him!” These are the same people who think giving up your rights for a false sense of security is a good idea. That the people they back stand to profit from making this a police state is irrelevant they’d have you believe.

The Neocons are not Congress proper or either party specifically but members of both parties and both houses that are taking their orders from corporations instead of We the People. Hell, one of the worst Neocons is Democrat Joe Lieberman. He’s almost as big a villain as Cheney. And the fascists rush to protect their own just like this thread attacking Monserrate. They tried distraction and it got shoved in their face. Now they can’t hide behind their homophobia anymore so it’s time to get all partisan, also missing the point that the man’s party affiliation is irrelevant to his fitness for office (which he is clearly not).

It’s not like we haven’t collectively established we are under attack by paid and multiple trolls working in concert and have been for some time. This is no surprise nor should it be given the Prof’s record on human rights and civil liberties. I’m not out of line in saying that I think most of the regulars would agree with this statement.

This thread has just been an exhibition in their tactics and how to counter them. But the enemy they most certainly are. They are the real enemy within. The enablers of fascism and corruption.

  17. “I don’t suppose we can go back to pointing out that smashing your girlfriend in the face with a bottle and then dragging her through a hotel is wrong?”

We seem to have a breakdown in communications. I was under the impression that describing those actions as “vile” was an affirmation of disgust. Today I found out that “vile” is now a term used to defend the perpetrator.

Maybe we have no political discourse. Maybe we just have two completely different dictionaries in play.

  18. BiL,

Oh no you don’t. You get all over my meme and make it yours, too.
    PLEASE?
