Sighting The Bible: Military Contractor Found Adding Biblical Citations to Weapons

ABC has a truly bizarre and disturbing story. Brian Ross reports that a military contractor has encoded hidden New Testament Bible passages on high-powered rifle sites. The contractor is Trijicon, which apparently confirmed the practice.

The biblical references appear as, in one case, 2COR4:6 — an apparent reference to Second Corinthians 4:6 of the New Testament, which reads: “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

The company received $660 million under a contract to supply 800,000 sights to the Marine Corps. It has other contracts with the Army.

U.S. regulations prohibits proselytizing of any religion. Moreover, such additions to military equipment should violate the contract which presumably did not ask for biblical citations with gun sights.

The use of biblical citations will only reaffirm the view of many that the U.S. went into Iraq and Afghanistan on a “crusade.” This view was magnified by Bush calling its a crusade and later citing Biblical passages to convince other leaders that this was a worthy, if not divinely ordained, effort. His subordinates appeared to keep Bush in a Biblical mindset by adding prominent quotations from the Bible in reports on the war, here.

In my view, this raises serious legal questions that should result in a review of this contract. As a minimum, the contractor should have to pay for the removal of the citations. We have to able to trust contractors not to carry out their hidden or religious agenda as part of a contract with the American people. Just imagine if these were citation to the Koran. If the company wishes to proselytize it should do so with theocratic governments. Perhaps the Swiss Guards that the Vatican need a few sights and citations.

  1. Well, the text has undergone significant edits during the past 1500-2000 years, it contains some obvious later additions (performing medical miracles, walking on water) and there is evidence left of various theological fights along the way (e.g. the Trinity, the Immaculate Conception). The King James version helped freeze it a bit, but people are already waiting to insert the Second Amendment.

BTW this rifle sight story about “Jesus rifles” is big big news in the Islamic world. They’ve been getting their hands on this shit.

I am not a bigot toward Christianity or any religion for that matter. Typical, call someone a bigot or a racist.

  3. And it doesn’t matter that I didn’t take the topic off course.

I simply pointed out my disgust for the practice of placing scripture on guns and pointed out that was not consistent with the gospel of Christ.

    But that doesn’t matter.

And it doesn’t matter that it was the anti Christian bigots who attacked me one after the other who took the thread off track. That doesn’t matter either.

All that matters is what this latest anti Christian bigot says happened.

  4. Wow! Prof. Turley brings up an issue about a military contractor putting religious quotes on military hardware and the troops go off on a religious binge. It doesn’t matter which religion is quoted on the scopes. If the contract does not allow them, they do not belong and must be removed. James tried to get the religious fanatics back on track and they seemed to ignore him. This is purely a contract matter. I don’t give a hoot what Paul did or did not do or say. The Bible is a story book, mostly fiction and it does not belong intertwined with the government’s business. Leave the Bible at home or in church and let’s hear the contract issues that relate to Prof. Turley’s issue. – Rafflaw

See the kind of disgusting filth we have to listen to?

    In one post we have;

    Relgious Fanatics

    The Bible is Fiction

The Bible is a Story Book

This is the kind of crap reasonable Christians have to listen to every day.

What’s worse, this one proceeds to infer that I was somehow against the article when in fact had he bothered to read my original comment which I reposted even, in which I condemned the practice of placing scriptures on weapons.

    But that doesn’t matter.

It doesn’t matter what my position was.

All that matter is what these anti Christian bigots, say it was.

Hmmm did you read this article?

  7. Anti-Christians on the left. Neoconservative Christians on the right.

I guess that would make me
    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OJ7QQqaYKA&hl=en_US&fs=1&]

  8. “Its about a particular group of neoconservative gun loving Christians who own a company and are printing bible verses on military gun sights.”

No it is not! You aren’t paying attention. There are no bible verses printed on the sights.

  9. And don’t pretend I’m crying or complaining.

I’m just educating you on the facts.

  10. The thread isn’t about rifle sights.

Its about a particular group of neoconservative gun loving Christians who own a company and are printing bible verses on military gun sights.

And none of the nonsense you’ve just witnessed has anything to do with it. Its just more anti Christian rhetoric coming from the anti Christians on the left who think their hatred of Christians is at the core, any different than 1930’s Germany’s hatred of Jews, or the Neocons hatred of Muslims. Its all the same. And I’m not saying they’re doing the same things so don’t even try. I’m saying that prejudice is prejudice. And whether against Christians, Jews, Muslims or Gays, its all the same. Its all prejudice.

If you go back to my first entries in this blog you’ll see I merely commented on how the hypocrisy of the neocons does not equal all of Christianity. This brought several who appear to be “regulars” to the instant attack. I was immediately barraged by non stop questions and each time I post it repeats itself (don’t worry, me thinks me shall not tarry too long in this place) as you see here. I can make the most benign of comments and elicit the most belligerent of responses.

What I’ve found in the liberal and progressive blogs on the web is that Christians are welcome, as long as they sit quietly by while their beliefs and faith are ridiculed, distorted and condemned.

If you sit there quietly enough, then you will not be part of that condemnation. Kind of like the passive black kid at the 1950’s pool hall. “oh not little Leroy…he’s a good one”.

Just say nothing while your beliefs are dragged through the mud, and no one will bother you. You’ll be “welcome” so to speak.

But should you speak up and point out that the tenets of Christianity do not equal the teachings of the Christian right, then forget it. No one wants to hear anyone defend Christianity these days. No one. Not in the liberal blogs.

And in the neocon blogs, well, they just twist Christianity like you do. The funny thing is they twist it the SAME way you do. Using the same arguments.

See, to you teaching hate and intolerance and killing and cruelty and such is wrong.

    To them it’s not wrong.

But you BOTH think that’s what Christianity teaches.

So you’re both wrong with regards to Christianity. (although you’re right about the former which is why the liberal leaning blogs are preferable)

Christianity doesn’t teach the things you BOTH think it does.

    It doesn’t.

All I did was point that out.

And these attacks haven’t stopped coming since.

  11. You were playing word games trying to keep me on Paul, like you’re doing now.

No one said it wasn’t the same person. In fact I said it was the same person. I said SAUL became Paul repeatedly.

I even posted them one at a time at one point.

    So stop lying Byron.

    Enough’s enough.

  12. “we asked many times and you did not answer in the affirmative until just a few posts ago.” – Byron

    Please stop lying Byron.

I explained that over two hours ago.

    Here, since your memory is so selective;

“We are merely pointing out that even though you have atoned for your sins you are still the same person, although washed clean by the sacrifice of Jesus. ” Byron

“No one said he wasn’t. But PAUL the Apostle did not EXIST at the time SAUL OF TARSUS was persecuting Christians.”

  13. “Maybe it’s less your belief and more that you are a pompous ass.”
    -Pinandpuller

Typical behavior of the 4 year old when cornered on facts.

“I don’t like you anymore!” (lower lip stuck out)

And brilliant timing I might add for one who comes in to harass an individual, and when that individual stands up to their onslaught, they’re a “pompous ass” for standing up to them.

Its the ole “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” childs game.

Well, given the choice of cow towing to your inquisition like attacks or standing up to them, I’ll choose standing up to them every time.

Regardless of how far out you stick your bottom lip.

“How unfortunate that your indignation doesn’t extend to the ridiculing and distortions of the beliefs of others.”

Maybe it’s less your belief and more that you are a pompous ass.

That’s the main reason I’m ridiculing you. I can make fun of your Chevy if you would like.

I’m pretty sure that Jesus or Paul(as you call him) said that you would be persecuted for your beliefs so are you complaining? How different the Gospels would be if, instead of crosses, spears and boiling oil the Apostles were mocked on the internet.

  16. Sorry James, didn’t see you there.

I was just finishing a thought.

I will step aside now with our nonsense and let the grown ups talk.
