We have seen too many videos of officers tasering or arresting people who give the slightest objection to a command. This video shows that many officers display a patience and restraint that is not just commendable but almost superhuman. I give you our choice for Officer of the Week.
The thing is I like the most about this 2008 video is the officer’s goodbye at the end to this utter nut job. This is truly a top cop.
This is an old video. It was shown to us while I was in the police academy in 1996.
The officer KNEW it was being recorded on his dash cam, and, acted accordingly.
You’re not the first to compare this famous video with the taser-happy approach that is too commonly used these days. I posted about this comparison on June 7, 2008 – see “World’s most pleasant and patient police officer”.

Cheers.
Thanks for the link, IraqVet. I had heard about that footie, but never saw it. Still not convinced we know the whole story, see, eg:

That is one patient and calm police officer. I am quite amazed that the driver’s use of F-bombs did not get him in more trouble. Kudo’s to Trooper Murray.
That’s a 16 July 1992 video of trooper Stephen Murray of the Maine State Police. In its various incarnations, it’s an evergreen classic in police training classes.
The full video, with an intro by the (definitely not fired or retired) trooper himself, is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXY2fImfr7Y
Police training officers seem to delight in embellishing and perpetuating the Urban Legends surrounding this video. But since the “he was fired/retired” part is demonstrably false, the “he riled him up intentionally” part loses credibility (though the popularity of that tale in police culture is disturbing per se).
All I see in this video a strong testament to the benefits of dash-cams. 18 years later, I’m disappointed that continual video surveillance of officers (via e.g. lapel-cams) during all public-contact incidents has not yet been implemented.
This cop has the patience of Job.
I love his “bye” at the end. lol.
IRVING
‘Bounty hunters’ spur
lockdown of school
Las Colinas Elementary School in Irving went on lockdown Thursday after four people representing themselves as bounty hunters seeking to apprehend someone were on the school’s campus.
Carrollton-Farmers Branch school district officials said teachers who were with children on the playground moved inside and then a lockdown was called. School counselors today will work with students who witnessed the incident, the district said.
School district officials said Irving police are investigating.

“real dealeo with this one”
It seems as if the guy got beat with a “real”night stick.
Love it! Someday I will be that cool and collected.
Of course they were both the same race, sex, etc. Only a white man can afford to be that crazy and get off with no consequences. Did that guy complain about his wife during his diabtribe? My sympathies are with HER.
A good piece on growing concerns of corruption in the Border Patrol:

In order to be in control of a situation, you must first be in control of yourself and your emotions.
Nice job, officer.
I’m with Dave and Blouise. It has been a long week. Seems like it was Friday only 17 days ago.
As to the officer?
Good cop. Extra donut.
Well one example there, and then these are listed:

Most of the police abuse is going to be harder to get rid of than pedophile priests in the church.
Because, like the church, the leaders sometimes cover for them.
Plus most of the cases are tried to keep local, QUICKLY & QUIETLY settled with a chunk of taxpayer’s cash, out of court, and then wait for it to blow over.
Without any of the facts ever coming out in a court room.
I believe we have a REAL crime wave here that most people don’t even realize!!
Skepticism, in my opinion, is always a good thing but I think today I’m going to agree with “dave” and clear my head for the weekend.
so that’s a fur piece a road up yonder in Maine I’m a guessin’ by the local vernacular…
as pretty as that cop was I’m with crazy man…and if he could afford a lawyer I’ll bet he could git off quik…
This video may not be what it appears. It comes up on Police Boards from time to time, and often one or more policemen chime in with some version of the following story:
The policeman had rudeness complaints.
He pulled over this truck in the video, but left his camera off.
He went to the driver and was rude. This got the truck driver angry.
Policeman went back to his vehicle and turned on the camera. The video you see starts here.
Policeman got in some kind of trouble for this stunt because his superiors knew what he did.
Normally I might not take this sort of Internet chatter too seriously, but because it seems to be persistent, somewhat consistent and to emanate from the pro-police-power side of the blogosphere, I do view this particular video with suspicion.
On the subject of mysterious popovids, do any of you Turleyheds know the real dealeo with this one:
I read you everyday and the subjects are often thought provoking. But, you always remember that we all need a break from deep thoughts from time to time. Well, today, between the ice skater and the laconic cop, this may be the best blog ever for clearing one’s head for the weekend.
AY:
cops put up with that everyday, and I think most comport themselves as this gentleman did. I personally think the taser videos are not the norm and that this probably is the norm.
This would have certainly gotten him tased or at least beat in some other places…..Dash cam worked good.
Now the doubting side say, was this a publicity ad?
