To the delight of civil libertarians and libertarians alike, the Canadian courts have been leading the world in dealing with conflicts between privacy principles and morality legislation. I am serving as an expert in the review of Canadian polygamy laws in British Columbia. In the meantime, the Ontario Superior Court may allow three prostitution laws to die this Saturday.
In September, the Court struck down the laws. The federal government is charging that this is nothing short of a “social experiment unprecedented in this country.” However, it is also a frank acknowledgment that consenting adults came engage in sex for money as a consensual choice. Currently, an individual can have sex with any number of partners but can be arrested if they accept anything of value in exchange for sex. They can receive gifts as part of a “relationship” no matter how fleeting but not as payment.
The Court previously noted that criminal laws force prostitutes in the shadows where they are easy prey for abuse and even homicides. Once legal, protections and regulations can apply to the world’s oldest profession. With the demise of the laws, street walking will be legal.

It was a lot of fun. We were concerned that a 2 year old would be a bit young for the 2 hour event but she got right into the spirit of the whole thing. It’s quite charming to see all the little ones in their Christmas PJ’s singing Christmas Carols and snacking on hot chocolate and chocolate-chip cookies. They all had their own storybook to follow along as the “story reader” told the tale.
The train slowly made its way to the Pole, interior lights were dimmed as we wound through the buildings of the North Pole and the children, with noses pressed firmly against the windows oh’d and ah’d at the lights and figures of North Pole residents. Most of the figures were “live” going about North Pole chores and stopping to wave at the kids (that’s when I’m sure I saw the little wrinkled green guy).
During the trip back Santo is on board and visits each child, sits for pictures and gives each a small gift.
There was a little, redhead boy in the seat behind us (I found out later that he had just turned 7)who had 2 lists for Santa. One list was for himself and the other was for his friend whose “daddy is un..em..poyed and couldn’t come. Santa slipped both lists to the child’s mother. Several adults also slipped some cash to the woman to help out Santa. She kept quietly trying to give the donations back but no one would take it. Thus for many adults it was a spontaneously special kind of trip. Sometimes you just gotta go with trust.

FRANKFURT, May 13, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Germans are rethinking their position onlegalized prostitution, made legal there in 2003, after reports that legalization has not really had any benefit for prostitutes, nor has it improved the situation for Germany at large.
In January, a woman was threatened with having her unemployment benefits revoked after she refused to take a ‘job’ as a prostitute in a Berlin brothel. The unemployed woman, a qualified information technologist, had indicated her willingness to take jobs outside her field and had worked in a café. After refusing an offer to work as a prostitute in a brothel, she was told by the job
centre that her benefits would be cut off if she did not go into prostitution.
“There is now nothing in the law to stop women from being sent into the sex industry,” said Hamburg lawyer Merchthild Garweg, who deals in such cases, according to a Christian Science Monitor report. “The new regulations say that working in the sex industry is not immoral anymore, and so jobs cannot be turned down without a risk to benefits.”
Nor has improved ‘working’ conditions for prostitutes, one intended goal of legalization, ever really materialized. “When it was set up there was much talk of securing proper contracts, proper health insurance, but a lot of this hasn’t materialized because of big holes in the legislation,” said Berlin’s Hydra prostitute advice center spokesman Marion Detlefs.
“Opponents say other Europeans need only look to Sweden to see the future of legalization,” the Christian Science Monitor article author wrote. “The country – which legalized prostitution 30 years ago – recriminalized it in 1998, after complaints that legalization had solved few of the problems it set out to address.”
Feminists and human rights activists on the left oppose legalization of prostitution and religious people on the right oppose it. Bob Herbert’s account of the brothels in Nevada that I posted above should give anyone pause.

A woman ran against Sam Brownback in the Kansas Republian primary… She’s facing signigicant sanctions (including a hefty fine) for “practicing law” without a license. I don’t know the details, but I may have read that she was “giving advice…” It’s been in the news.
On another topic, I wouldn’t think it prudent to ask medical friends or colleagues for advice at, say, a cocktail party… Nor would it be wise to ask a perfect stranger (who happens to be a physician and is also at the party). If, under duress, one were to make the mistake of doing so, one’s approach would be everything, it seems, so as not to alienate, etc. Enough said.
