Revenue Addiction: New Hampshire and Other States Move to Cut Tobacco Taxes to Increase Sales

There has long been an ironic relationship between states and tobacco. While insisting that they are raising taxes on tobacco to combat smoking, states have long been addicted to the revenue. Now, some states are lowering taxes to encourage more smoking to generate more revenue to deal with budget shortfalls.

New Hampshire is the latest such state. Facing lower taxes in Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts, the legislators want to get in on the profits from smoking. A bill would cut the rate 10 cents to $1.68 per pack.

  1. I have been exploring for a little for any high-quality articles or weblog posts on this kind of area . Exploring in Yahoo I at last stumbled upon this web site. Reading this info So i’m happy to convey that I have an incredibly just right uncanny feeling I came upon exactly what I needed. I so much surely will make certain to do not forget this website and provides it a look on a relentless basis.

  2. Even though im a smoker ( the one most people hate) we stopped going to Nh to buy cigarettes, not because of the gas, but the goverment over taxed them. Today in my green house in mass i grow my own tobacco, we have our own bars, ( aka a speak easy) my car is electric powered ( Charged by solar before some tree hugger tries to say im useing fossil fuels to charge it)) and i make my own beer, therefor elimiting all taxes together, also im a vegan ( been one for over 40 years) im 51 so fix these roads for free on your taxes, tax the meat cause its for our heath ( remember more vegetables) and a carton ( yes carton of smokes) is about 3 dollars, Hmmmm make some money that way couldnt i if i were a crook. However lets keep NH free by me staying out of it, you lost my money when your govenor went crazy with the taxes on cigs, no more ski trips, no more hotel rooms rented, no nothing from me. Live free up north, i am tax free!

  4. pete: “if you’d ever painted a room, only to have the tar and nicotine bleed through the new paint, you’d understand why a landlord may not want smoking anywhere in their building.”

Whenever I’ve repainted apartments, I’ve always prep-washed the walls and used a sealant undercoat…hence no bleeding. Cheap ass landlords who won’t pay for a proper repaint seems the real problem.

What’s next? Telling people they can’t cook Greek, Italian or East Indian because of the garlic or curry cooking odors will permeate the wall paint?
