It appears that same-sex marriage is being groomed for a major issue in this election. With Jay Carney insisting that President Obama remains clear that his views are unclear, Newt Gingrich and Michele Bachmann stepped forward this weekend to put the issue front and center in their campaigns. Gingrich this weekend announced that he will lead the fight against same-sex marriage to stop the nation from “drifting toward a terrible muddle.” He said that he would be looking for ways to “defend that view as legitimately and effectively as possible.”
Critics are likely to charge that Gingrich certainly has more experience in the area with three prior marriages — making the campaign sound more like a pitch that marriage should be restricted to a man and a woman and a woman and a woman.
The decision of New York to become the sixth state to recognize same-sex marriage guarantees that it will be a hot issue in the campaign. Bachmann is calling for a constitutional amendment.
For the purposes of full disclosure, I have long argued that the states should uniformly adopt a civil union standard and leave “marriages

TrollBot cannot tell the difference between defending someone and being the target of ridicule. Interesting.
Mike Appleton:
“The debate over whether homosexuality is behavioral or biological is extremely important.”
I would imagine that it is some of both, either separately or working in tandem. I think some people are born gay and some people become gay because of emotional trauma.
The people who are born gay should be left alone, the people who become gay and want to change their life style should be helped to do so but not out of some religious prohibition.
Why cant people just leave other people alone and accept them on face value if they are decent. good people?
Elaine M:
I think Dr. Bachmann has something in his closet. And it isnt a Tuxedo. Call me cynical but most people I know dont want to change gays, it always seems the ones who do are protesting a little too much.
I am amazed she is married to that guy, not at all what I would have thought. Although Margaret Thatcher’s husband was rather effeminate as well. And I have seen other strong republican political women with effeminate husbands.
kderosa:
As I indicated yesterday, I do not participate in online discussions with individuals who enjoy anonymous taunts and insults. My name is Mike Appleton. I’m a lawyer in Florida. And I’m real easy to find. I’m not ashamed of attaching my views to my name and if I want to insult you, you’ll know who it’s coming from.
The issue of gay rights is extremely important. Whether homosexuality should be entitled to suspect class status is extremely important. The debate over whether homosexuality is behavioral or biological is extremely important. But I prefer to debate those issues with serious adults.
You may now proceed with your discussion of the “Mike Appleton/Bob, Esq. ‘stupid card’ theory.” Your anonymity is no longer entitled to my respect and I’m moving on.
kd the other bda
we now have an army of supporters trying to translate Obama’s words, satisfying another of Mike A’s factors.
This is priceless.
and so much easier than forming real arguments.
It’s cute the way you all are rushing to his defense.
Mike S. Its your meds time again.
Mike, speaking of Jackass, I am waiting for those Famous Last Words trolls and bumpkins like to use: “Watch this….”
Bachmann’s Husband Calls Homosexuals ‘Barbarians’ Who ‘Need To Be Educated’ And ‘Disciplined’
Think Progress, 6/29/2011
http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2011/06/29/257646/bachmanns-husband-calls-homosexuals-barbarians-who-need-to-be-educated-and-disciplined/
Excerpt:
When trying to figure out where presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) gets her stringent, anti-gay views, you only have to look as far as her husband. Dr. Marcus Bachmann, who has described himself as his wife’s “strategist,” runs a Christian-based counseling center in Minnesota that has been rumored to offer reparative treatment for those looking to “ungay” themselves.
Just last summer, Dr. Bachmann explained his position on homosexuality while offering theoretical advice to parents concerned that one of their children was gay.
BACHMANN: We have to understand: barbarians need to be educated. They need to be disciplined. Just because someone feels it or thinks it doesn’t mean that we are supposed to go down that road. That’s what is called the sinful nature. We have a responsibility as parents and as authority figures not to encourage such thoughts and feelings from moving into the action steps…
And let’s face it: what is our culture, what is our public education system doing today? They are giving full, wide-open doors to children, not only giving encouragement to think it but to encourage action steps. That’s why when we understand what truly is the percentage of homosexuals in this country, it is small. But by these open doors, I can see and we are experiencing, that it is starting to increase.
“Arguing like a lefty is fun!!!”
No doubt the same kind of fun that people get appearing to be an idiot, or perhaps Jackass.
I apologize for use of the male pronoun to describe this troll above, I should have used the gender neutral pronoun of “it” all the way through my comment. We don’t know, nor has it made any claims to be of either sex, or indeed if it may be a computer program.
“Actually she’s 12 and 361 days old. Quite the gaff.”
Oh the sadness and amazement that our President would lie in so malign a fashion. I’m SHOCKED…..SHOCKED I tell you. Actually what I’m shocked about, is the vicious pettiness and prevarication involved in making the original comment. It is proof positive of all the charges directed at this troll. Given past history I believe he feels he’s laid a trap, in that his comeback will be we’re slandering Palin for the same inane things. As the saying goes “you can’t make this stuff up.” For its sake I hope this is only its usual dishonesty and that it is not so delusional as to believe it is making telling points. Strikingly, this troll becomes more amusing in its obfuscations as it goes along. I sense the makings of a comedy act based on maladroitness.
about to turn 14 years old.
@mespo727272
Last I checked 12 and 361 days did not equal 13 years old. Kind of like how 58 states does equal 50 states. Math must not be your strong suit Mespo.
As far as we know, he thought his daughter was about to 14 years old.
And, according to the lefty playbook which I am learning from you guys, Obama’s long history of similar gaffes is conclusive proof that this current statement is also inaccurate. We don’t even have to look into those messy details you cite.
Arguing like a lefty is fun!!!
Making inaccurate statements is evidence that the person is in the habit of making inaccurate statements. And, only stupid/incoherent/illiterate people do that. At least according to Bob, Esq and Mike A.
And, there’s already plenty of Obama verbal gaffes and Obamaisms in the book already. So he doesn’t get the benefit of any doubt on any misstatements because … well you know the argument better than I do.
I think it’s stupid and childish too. But, apparently I’m the only ones on this board who feel that way.
I’m learning a lot of neat tricks from you guys.
Just trying to keep the rhetorical playing field level.
“Not quite. She’s 12.”
*******************
Actually she’s 12 and 361 days old. Quite the gaff.
Not that kderosa would make such an obvious and egregious error of fact so easliy obtained. Nope, not old Revere-Nero-Stalin-derosa, there.
LOL
Missed kid’s age is equal to some of the gaffes and Spoonerisms of Palin, Bachmann and Bush the Lesser? Hell, I sometimes get my own age wrong, that of my wife as well, and call my kids by each other’s names. Anyone who has kids does that. I do believe we have a false equivalence here.
In a news conference Wednesday, President Barack Obama twice referred to his oldest daughter, Malia, as being 13 years old.
Not quite. She’s 12.
Beginning to document Obama’s many Obamaisms to establish that an “entire book could be written” on them and that he is “illiterate and incoherent,” According to the Mike Appleton/Bob, Esq “stupid card” theory, this will establash all future Obama statements as being factual incorrect in a totally non- ad hominemy way.
@Mike A
The fact that some gay marriage opposer have unsound Constitutional arguments is not releveant, though probably the reason why the founders favored a repulic over a straight democracy.
Also, where the states are getting their morals from is also not relevant. Moreover, Christinaity is hardly alone in looking askance at homosexual behavior.
Last, sexual orientation has not yet been accorded suspect class status, requiring strict scrutiny review.
Sarah Palin’s movie, The Undefeated, which was written and produced by her and is all about Sarah, won’t be out for another couple of weeks. However, the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes is primed and ready for reviews. But if you go look at the site, note the tags to classify the movie:
