Norwegian television has identified a suspect in the shooting spree on the island Utoya as Anders Behring Breivik, 32, describing him as a member of “right-wing extremist groups in eastern Norway.” The shooting at the youth camp has reportedly resulted in more than 80 deaths.
In his Facebook account, now deleted, he describes himself as having Christian, conservative views. He also has a Twitter account with only one tweet, a quote from philosopher John Stuart Mills: “One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100 000 who have only interests.”
If the reports are accurate, don’t expect denunciations of right-wing extremism from Fox News. If the event in Norway had been caused by a Muslim, would Fox News classify it as a terrorist attack instead of a massacre by a madman?
kderosa,
I think many wanted to lump Breivik in with anti-Semites, as we heard even here with the “master race” meme. That spot judgement based on stereotypes now appears to be completely wrong. Breivik repeatedly endorses Israeli goals and identity in his writings.
He was also a steroid user and proponent.
OS,
I agree that Breivik is not a lone wolf, so to speak.
Although clearly highly intelligent, well read and engaged, I also don’t think at age 32 that he is the thought leader of many of the ideas he published. Throughout the document he quotes Kennedy, Castro, even Chomsky to frame his arguments. My guess is that there are other thought leaders not attributed in much of his work.
Breivik’s steady praise of Japan’s attributes doesn’t strike me as entirely compatible with a “master race” mindset. Although he does credit European ideas for advancing Japan in the quote I gave, he also credits Japanese cultural attributes for endorsing innovation and perfectionism, conclusions that are fairly mainstream, accepted, and I believe complementary of the Japanese people. He may be mistaken in crediting monoculturalism for much of Japan’s strength, but perhaps not. They continue to be a successfully tested people.
This loon has apparently plagiarized parts of his manifesto from the Unabomber.
He’s also been described as a “fundamentalist,” but his manifesto states that he’s “not going to pretend I’m a very religious person.” He’s also supposedly a “neo-Nazi,” but he denounces Islamic oppression of Jews, identifies himself as pro-Israel, and expresses concern about anti-Semitic hate crimes. (See Oyvind Strommen)
Puzzling: I saw those comments earlier and have been reflecting on them. Of course, these are echoes of statements I first heard about 70 years ago. Phrases like “master race” come to mind.
What is scary is that a good demagogue can sell this stuff to enough people to create a serious movement. We have seen some who have drunk the Kool Aid on this blog. If this act of terrorism is dismissed as simply the work of a lone wolf madman, they have not been paying attention. I think we have much more to concern us from domestic terrorists than the imported variety.
OS,
By my reading, Breivik seems to acknowledge that the United States is a nation of immigrants — perhaps a nation who successfully dominated and erased a native culture as he fears will happen in Norway and throughout Europe.
His concern with the US appears to be based on US power to stop uprisings against European governments should opposition to multicultural trends and liberal immigration be successful. It is unclear to me that one party or another would be less interventionist in such a scenario. I think both are likely to intervene.
Breivik predicts the fall of the United States:
Breivik sees monoculturalism as vital to the stability and success of nations.
well Mespo,
If Kdrosa, Stgol, Steve Grossman, Roco are paid trolls…then the employers is not getting their moneys worth….If I were the employer I would fire them and then sue them for Fraud, Receiving Money under False Pretenses and Misrepresentation….
Hannah:
In our host’s absence, I say, “Welcome, Hannah.” kderosa has the earmarks of a paid troll but our host, Professor Turley, indulges all opinions out of his respect for the First Amendment. We have a civility rule and generally the adherence is pretty good. There is a wealth of wisdom and expereince here and we’d like your input as you see fit.
Here is more from Anders Behring Breivik’s “manifesto.” Emphasis of key statement is mine:
I’m just a new visitor but kderosa adds nothing to the blog. Why indulge him/her? Just ignore all comments. With luck, he/she will go somewhere else to get his/her jollies.
OS, excellent links. Odd how the uber-nationalists don’t want people crossing borders but bigotry, hatred, violence mongering and fear crossing borders is just fine.
@Mike Spindell. OK then let’s test. What was your strawman argument?
“Did your mommy ever teach you what a strawman argument is”
Actually “It” I learned it years ago listening to irrational people arguing their viewpoint. Lately, in your writings I’ve seen its epitome. This of course is another of your little games, where you copy what you’ve been exposed as doing and throw it back as an accusation of someone else. Argumentively, you as slick as glue.
Look at you, OS, grasping for any shred of a fact so you can turn this tragedy into your own little lefty gloat-fest. You are so compassionate.
Great links OS! this is one scary dude with crazy Koch brother ideas.
Oh my. This is from his “manifesto.” I offer it here without comment:
Errata: He was allegedly a member of the Progress Party, but I have not been able to confirm that for sure. What is clear is that, member or not, he was a sympathizer of the Progress Party and was opposed to the Labour Party and what it stood for.
Anders Breivik was a member of the Norwegian Progress Party. Tim Phillips, from the Koch funded “Americans for Prosperity,” spoke at the Progress Party convention recently. His speech was reported in Aftenpoltofen News. An excerpt from the news article:

“We don’t even know if he is even “right-wing” yet.”

Really? Assiduously avoiding reading his ‘manifesto’ are you?
More denial by avoidance. Apologia much?
In 2083 A European Declaration of Independence, the shift from democratic to violent tactics to defend European culture and national autonomy is discussed starting in section 3.1:
Later, four possible outcomes are discussed for regarding the anticipated Islamification of Europe. These are seen as playing out over many decades:
