Anders Behring Breivik Identified As Suspect in Norwegian Attack

-Submitted by David Drumm (Nal), Guest Blogger

Norwegian television has identified a suspect in the shooting spree on the island Utoya as Anders Behring Breivik, 32, describing him as a member of “right-wing extremist groups in eastern Norway.” The shooting at the youth camp has reportedly resulted in more than 80 deaths.

In his Facebook account, now deleted, he describes himself as having Christian, conservative views. He also has a Twitter account with only one tweet, a quote from philosopher John Stuart Mills: “One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100 000 who have only interests.”

If the reports are accurate, don’t expect denunciations of right-wing extremism from Fox News. If the event in Norway had been caused by a Muslim, would Fox News classify it as a terrorist attack instead of a massacre by a madman?

Don’t bother the troll. He’s working on a conspiracy theory involving Breivik, the New Black Panthers, Judge Crater, the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It’s causing him to fall behind on his quota, and both Koch Brothers are breathing down his neck.

  2. OS, as I have explained to you countless times, merely pointing to the potential bias of a source is an ad hominem:

“Ad hominem circumstantial points out that someone is in circumstances such that he is disposed to take a particular position. Ad hominem circumstantial constitutes an attack on the bias of a source. This is fallacious because a disposition to make a certain argument does not make the argument false; this overlaps with the genetic fallacy (an argument that a claim is incorrect due to its source).”

Circumstantial: A Circumstantial Ad Hominem is one in which some irrelevant personal circumstance surrounding the opponent is offered as evidence against the opponent’s position. This fallacy is often introduced by phrases such as: “Of course, that’s what you’d expect him to say.” The fallacy claims that the only reason why he argues as he does is because of personal circumstances, such as standing to gain from the argument’s acceptance.

The truth of the allegation has nothing to do with whetehr the particular argument in question is false. That is why it is an ad hominem, stoogey.

You can repeat your denials all you want, it’s still an ad hominem and it is increasingly embarrassing that you don’t recognize it.

  3. “Pam Geller is a conspiracy theorist.”

Is she related to Uri Geller, the guy who bends spoons with his mind?

  4. OS,

I bet Kdponzee subscribes to Debbie Schussel’ site and blawg….

  5. Kd, everyone here has tried to explain to you, without success, that an ad hominem fallacy is when the attack is a false one. Telling the ugly truth about someone or something is NOT an ad hominem attack. Pam Geller is a conspiracy theorist. Her site is a political one with an agenda, which includes using conspiracy theories to advance her arguments. That is the truth, and not an ad hominem attack.

  6. OS, that’s an ad hominem as you know, but it is always wise to be sceptical of any source. Funny though how you always discount the source when it doesn’t comport with your views, but ignore the source when it does. Your confirmation bias is showing again.

  7. Why It Wasn’t Unreasonable to Suspect Muslim Terrorism in Norway

First, it was only a year ago that Norwegian authorities thwarted an al Qaeda plot to attack Norway.

Second, today’s attacks were nearly simultaneous. An al Qaeda calling card.

Third, it was only last week that that Norwegian authorities indicted Mullah Krekar, founder of the Ansar al-Islam, for threats against Norwegian politicians.

Fourth, a Muslim organization called Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami claimed responsibility for the attack. This is the most notable point of all. I mean what kind of people brag about murdering innocent civilians they did not kill?

Finally, consider all the acts of terrorism which have occurred since September 11, 2001 – Bali, Madrid, London, Mumbai, Fort Hood not to mention all those suicide bombings in Israel. All of those attacks were carried out by Muslim entities. Frankly, it would have been irresponsible to discount the possibility of yet another Muslim terrorist attack.

  8. Atlas Shrugs is hardly a credible source of information. Not to say it is wrong, but anything from that site should be regarded as suspect. Pamela Geller is a conspiracy theorist of the first order.

  9. While the leftist and Islamic supremacist ghouls rush to portray Norway mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik as a Christian and even as an anti-jihadist, the unanswered questions multiply. Why did a jihad group take credit for the atrocities, and then retract? And who altered the murderer’s Facebook page? Yesterday, at the time that his name was released, his Facebook page looked like this (hat tip Vivien for the screenshots):

Did he have two different Facebook pages, one in Norwegian and one in English, and he only identified himself as a Christian and a conservative on the English one? Or did he pause from his murder spree to add “Christian” and “conservative” to his Facebook profile? Or maybe the whole page is a fake, as has been reported here.

But in the case, who faked it, and why? Who is so anxious to portray Breivik as a Christian and conservative? And if this was faked, can we trust any of the material that is now being released about Breivik being anti-jihad?

    UPDATE: Craig confirms:

“I have confirmed the Google cache on Jul 22, 2011 23:52:36 GMT of the Facebook profile page supports the theory of the adding of Christian/Conservative (see below).

Our PDF printout from the Facebook profile was done Jul 23 01:39 GMT, and the profile was deleted soon afterwards by Facebook, so how was a detained Anders Behring Breivik able to change it?

    Excerpt:
“The accused has made statements today that require further investigation, including that ‘there are two more cells in our organization,” Heger told a news conference.

Breivik told the court that he acted to save Europe from Islam. He had previously said he had acted alone.

  11. Lottakatz, are you seriously citing a “comment” to substantiate such a perverted justification? If you think an abhorrent tu quo que gives you any grounds to adulterate this tragedy into a political cheap-shot, then go give yourself a swirly and please forget to come up for air. We need fewer people in this world like you.

  12. Norway mass killer wants time in court to tell why

    Excerpt:
OSLO (Reuters) – Anders Behring Breivik wants to tell Norway and the world why he killed at least 93 people in a bomb attack and shooting rampage when he appears in court on Monday, his lawyer said.

Calling himself a crusader against a tide of Islam in a rambling 1,500-page online manifesto, the 32-year-old mass murderer wants the opportunity to explain actions he deemed ‘atrocious, but necessary’.

Lawyer Geir Lippestad said his client had admitted to Friday’s shootings at a Labour youth camp and an earlier bomb that killed seven people in Oslo’s government district, but that he denies any criminal guilt.

“He has been politically active and found out himself that he did not succeed with usual political tools and so resorted to violence,” Lippestad told TV2 news.

“I await a medical assessment of him,” he said.

The worst peacetime massacre in the normally placid country’s modern history appears to have been driven by Breivik’s mission to save Europe from what he saw as the threats of Islam, immigration and multi-culturalism.
That he deliberately surrendered to police when finally confronted on the tiny island of Utoeya after gunning down 86 youngsters underlines his desire to secure a public platform for his radical thoughts.

  13. AY,

I suspect they’re of the Meth Head variety. Willing to do anything for another hit.

  14. Mike are they the Street walker type, Hotel Class, Bordello type or common ordinary basement call girls…From what I understand…they all have different prices…depending on what is expected…But a person of the evening..is still just that…

  15. Brevik is probably brilliant but batshit crazy. This distinguishes from the Teagaggers in that they are merely crazy. It also distinguishes itself from the paid trolls here, whose profession we nl, but whose price is negotiable.

  16. P: I have no idea. Just speculating, it may be that there is not much of an Oriental presence in Norway. If there had been an influx of Japanese, for example, I suspect he would have gone off on them too. This political/cultural movement seems to feed off hating the “different other.”

We sure see it in this country with the railing against brown skinned immigrants.

  17. OS,

I hear your argument, but go back to Breivik’s point that very few criticize Japan (or South Korea) for rejecting multiculturalism in their policies. Why is that?

  18. Puzzling, from my reading, he has no problem with Jews as long as they stay in Israel. Or the natives of other countries who stay home. Where he has problems is if they emigrate to HIS country. I am not sure how we categorize that. Whether it is racism or just xenophobia. He feels his race is being somehow impacted negatively by a multicultural society. I am most uncomfortable with this stuff because I am old enough to remember Nazi and fascist propaganda first hand.

  19. That spot judgment was based on political opportunism. They appear to be not very familiar with the views of the extreme right. This guy’s cosntellation of nutty views is not exactly a perfect fit with the nutty views of th extreme right.
