Karzai Approves Edict Stating Woman Are “Secondary” And Worth Less Than Men

We have previously discussed Afghan President Hamid Karzai stated inclinations toward the Taliban and harsh treatment of women. Karzai now appears to be moving more aggressively to this Sharia-based vision for women — a vision that expressly devalues their worth and endorses beatings by their husbands. This week, Karzai endorsed an edict from the Afghan Ulema Council — Afghanistan’s highest Islamic authority — that women are worth less than men and supporting “Sharia-compliant” beatings of women. That is the model government that we have created with the loss of both our men and women as well as hundreds of billions of dollars. We are still spending billions on the country as it embraces the Taliban and harsh Sharia principles.

The edit states that “Men are fundamental and women are secondary.” It further demands segregation of men and women and prohibits women “mingling with strange men in various social activities such as education, in bazaars, in offices and other aspects of life.” It also suggests that women should not work or go to university and should wear a “full Islamic hijab.”

On Tuesday, Karzai endorsed the edit and said that it “reiterated Islamic principles and values.” Female leaders have cried foul but the shift back against full rights for women appears to be accelerating in the country — led by our hand-picked leader, Karzai. Of course, those low-value, secondary women in our military forces have been fighting to keep Karzai alive so he can sit in his palace and proclaim them to be inferior human beings.

I am not as angry that we have again created a country that stands opposed to our most fundamental values. We have a long history of such disasters around the world. Rather, I am angry that we have lost so many lives and treasure to achieve that result in Afghanistan.

And that’s it in a nutshell. We need to get the hell out and take care of business at home. Too many good lives lost… and just think what we could have done with all that money…

  2. Swarthmore mom,

Was it Elaine M., you…, or someone else who coined the phrase Taliban-lite to describe these men in the GOP?

New Internet Cafe Connects Afghan Women to World

    Excerpt:

“Gul’s case is not isolated in Afghanistan. During 1990s, the ruling Taliban banned women from going to work, getting an education, or even leaving their homes without a male escort .

Women’s rights in Afghanistan have advanced since then, but activists say there is still a room for improvement.”

  4. At the rate the Republican Party is going, it will struggle to get 33 percent of women in 2012, leaving the party to try scaring up seven out of ten men (whom women outvote). That none of this had any apparent impact on Tuesday night’s result, that the candidates showed no more cognizance of what happened these past eight days with the female electorate than they did the Tuesday before or the Tuesday before that, and that Romney’s opportunism was so determinedly unfazed may mean—in terms of Republican prospects in November—that the more things stay the same, the more they change, and not for the better. From American Prospect.

  5. ” . . . we have lost so many lives and treasure to achieve that result in Afghanistan.” (JT)

    No one could have predicted.

Wonder what our SOS will have to say about that, eh!

  6. The Ameican Taliban is alive and well. That s the direction we are heading. Afghanistan is already there. Time to exit the place…now.

  7. The only thing missing in the people and/or Countries who view woman as ‘not equal’ or as ‘objects’ of chattel….is humanity. That’s all….plain and simple.

So why does our Country seek to become nonhuman?

  8. It’s an easy exercise to poke fun at – or rail against – the “Fundamentalists” in far-off countries.

    What about closer to home?
Is Santorum every bit of a fundamentalist?
Is Limbaugh a more refreshing presence then an extreme Islamic cleric?

What of Romney – who would “absolutely!” support a Life Begins at Conception amendment?
When faced with a woman who tries to explain that this would outlaw the most common methods of *cycle* control (like in the region of 90%) used by American women – and that women have extremely good reasons to take the pill other than birth control – he simply does not understand how “birth control” works.
For his benefit – and for the benefit of any male readers who think that ‘woman’s body = vagina’ – here is some useful information.

Guys! It’s ok to watch. There is some ikky stuff, but there is also some beer in the man-cave.

In the interests of political party balance, I’d like to add that imo Obama is the most evil US President to date.

  9. WHAT????

“After reading this and seeing whats going on here in our country also I can only shake my head with this assault on women and their rights and their very existence in some cases.
I can only ask” Whats Going ON ?”

  11. Progress will only be made when the women, but especially the children, are empowered by learning that there ARE alternative ways to live. Money for fighting and dying won’t fix it.

These backward cults (Muslim, Jew, Christian whatever) survive by passing their poison to the children as mental abuse which they can then perpetuate.

While ever we tolerate religion as ‘more mild’ here than ‘over there’ we allow the abuse of basic human rights to go on excused as “practice” or “culture”.

Here in Australia, we have been fighting (and winning) to have Ethics (rather than religion) taught as a requirement of the State* in the Ghettos that are religious schools. A simple act, to show the children that they should take critical thought home to their parents who would otherwise brainwash them.

    * Yes, even in the Islamic schools.

  12. Attempts to impose one culture on another are never going to work.

In any case, the US is not in Afghanistan & other countries in order to facilitate/impose self-determination by the people of those countries.
The sole purpose is to ensure that the regime to be put in power is a client of US policy. End of.

The 100’s of millions of US$ poured into Egypt via NGOs “to encourage democracy” was not intended to all Egyptians to elect anyone they wanted to.

The long-term hopes for places like Afghanistan is that a younger generation will sweep away the bitter old men who control everything. (ditto for every other country 🙂

The younger generation in Afghanistan are pushing back against the religious councils via activism and ridicule:
“Afghans lampoon clerics over women ruling” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-17296607

To which I add my own – by reference to the photo in http://www.abc.net.au/news/2009-08-21/burqa-clad-afghan-women-show-identification-cards/1399670:

‘Karzai endorses #Afghan religious council rule. Women must in future wear burkas in their photo ID’

‘Afghan men can use the votes of female family members. 4th guy in line not trying hard enough. Probably a cleric’

  13. Happy International Women’s Day Comrade Karzai, a day that also celebrates Mother Nature, seeing as how she too is characterized as a woman.

In the case of Mother Nature, Karzai is right to note that she is a secondary consideration, even though our lives depend on her.
