Evolutionary Progress: Obama Embraces Same-Sex Marriage After “Evolving” Away From His Prior Opposition

After years of “evolution,” President Obama today switched his past opposition to same-sex marriage and says that he now supports the right. Obama stated that he only came to this realization after speaking with his family and gay and lesbian associates, but he now personally supports same-sex marriage. He continues to maintain however that the question of same-sex marriage must remain a state issue, which would indicate that he does not view this as a right protected under the Bill of Rights. Obama however has now distinguished himself as the only major candidate in the general election who will not oppose same-sex marriage as a personal matter.

In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, Obama stated:

“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together; when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”

That statement falls short of stating that this is a constitutional right as opposed to personal view. In past cases, the Obama Administration has opposed arguments that sexual orientation should be given the same protection as race — even after changing its position on “don’t ask don’t tell” and the “Defense Of Marriage Act.” However, this remains an important, if belated, recognition of the unfairness and inequity facing gay and lesbian couples.

The support of state authority on the question will help Obama control the political backlash in states like Virginia and North Carolina. However, it creates an interesting contrast to the position of the Administration in court in cases ranging from medical marijuana to health care to immigration where it has rejected claims of state authority.

At the moment, it remains dangerously undefined for the Administration: is same-sex marriage a constitutional right or a personal choice in the President’s view? If it is a constitutional right, can gays and lesbians claim heightened scrutiny of review associated with race or at least gender? That does not appear to be the thrust of Obama’s comments. The fact that the Administration continues to crackdown on state medical marijuana laws as a federal question, same-sex marriage would appear to rank below the question of the use of marijuana for terminally ill patients as a legal question.

It is hard to know how to react to the news. Civil libertarians are obviously less than enthused with the long opposition of the President or the view that the President had finally reached a point where even the normally favorable White House press corp was openly mocking his position. Even Democratic stalwarts this week were denouncing Obama and telling him to “man up” and take a stand on principle. It should not take a conversation with your daughters to recognize a fundamental right after years as a state legislator, U.S. Senator, and U.S. President. Yet, he has at least finally dropped his opposition and that puts him in a better position than Romney on the question.

The President should now offer a better idea of the constitutional footing of this right. His description of his thought process notably does not reference notions of equal protection as much as basic fairness:

“This is something that, you know, we’ve talked about over the years and she, you know, she feels the same way, she feels the same way that I do. And that is that, in the end the values that I care most deeply about and she cares most deeply about is how we treat other people and, you know, I, you know, we are both practicing Christians and obviously this position may be considered to put us at odds with the views of others but, you know, when we think about our faith, the thing at root that we think about is, not only Christ sacrificing himself on our behalf, but it’s also the Golden Rule, you know, treat others the way you would want to be treated. And I think that’s what we try to impart to our kids and that’s what motivates me as president and I figure the most consistent I can be in being true to those precepts, the better I’ll be as a as a dad and a husband and, hopefully, the better I’ll be as president.”

The Golden Rule basis for this right leaves if on the same level as other personal choices and social disagreements — as opposed to a matter of equal protection or privacy. Yet, in a process of evolution, we are now at least in the same rough genus of rights. He also can rightfully claim to be the first president to support same-sex marriage.

  1. Reflexive thought – If you’re as much of a “kid” (or maybe the words are “naive,” “foolish,” “sophomoric” apply) as you say you are, you should have taken others’ advice, and gone to your room when you were told. But because you are a kid, you didn’t take the advice given. Doubt anyone on this list hasn’t gone that route before.

Adisen – Nothing was “taken” from you. You left your footprints where anyone could research what are about.

Repeat after me: There. Is. No. Privacy. On. The. Internet.

Your challenges to the members of this blog made it inevitable that someone might just try and figure you out. It’s the antithesis of Vegas; what goes on the Internet lasts forever on the Internet.

If anything, I may have a bit more compassion knowing that if what you stated was true, that you are certainly in need of whatever help is out there. I feel sorry for what it has made you, and would wish you the best as you try and overcome these emotional obstacles. Before you can “save” others, you need to “save” yourself. That should be #1 in your young life right now.

I think the formula is: Youth + inexperience = mistakes; mistakes + learning from them = wisdom. As you can see, once you achieve wisdom, age is not a factor.

You’ve been disrespectful to myself and a lot of other people who have made great contributions in this world. Your childish, dogmatic attacks in the end, will have more of an impact on you, than on those who’ve been around a while. We have so many more problems to deal with, than an impetuous young lady.

There are many ways to learn, and this group has a lot more compassion than you think; but your persistence in needling some of the more sage members of this blog (not including myself, I’m still a neophyte) could have been handled with much more grace than you did.

If you do choose to continue this instant conversation, all you have to do is click on the blue “junctionshamus” at the top of any of my responses. But for the time being, just continue to watch and learn for a bit.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

    Via con Dios,

  2. AD, You say you would “not hurt gays in a million years”. ah, your words hurt all gay people when you state that the mighty God of the universe syas they are unclean, etc etc et al. That really hurtful.

And people like you support politicians and legislation that hurts gay people in terrible ways, keeping them as second class citizens under the laws of the land. TERRIBLY HURTFUL TO GAY PEOPLE.

Your whole philosophy and belief system is hurtful and harmful to gay people all over the world. People like you convinced Uganda to pass a ‘Kill the Gays’ bill into law.

  3. Junctionshamus: I see you have nothing better to do then invade my privacy..That’s kind of strange, if you’re a lawyer, you should have more sense then that, especially if you don’t know who I really am. ..what are you looking for really…why not try my facebook page..but I must warn you that you’re liable. Do you need a photo? And if you’re wondering why there are none, its because I’ve have Stalkers that I befriended not knowing their intentions and was told over and over NOT to post a photo of myself, but did anyway..I had a painful battle for months because of trusting someone on Facebook ( Men do not take rejection very well) Ok..maybe I went a little overboard here seeking truth..but I just got caught up in the insults and I’m to stubborn to back down..I did not know for a FACT what I signed up for here..and if I had known, I would never have touched it…and although I don’t agree with your lifestyle, I do have gay friends ( and a relative) and I was not out to intentionally insult you, and yes, there was a “DON” who died as I said, but I never dreamed I’d care about him that much…….but most of you truly are extremely arrogant and hurtful. As I said before, I’ve never known any Gays to act or talk like this. You seem to have a vengeful spirit of some kind…if there’s anything else you want to know, why not just ask me…and if you knew me..I really am a “Kid” .. and I don’t know you personally and would not hold anything against you…unless you break into my home, rob, molest or rape a friend or relative…and you also made me “fear” some things I did not know…its just a way of learning for me. Not even sure I would use the gun, unless I was just so scared I’d pull the trigger..I was admonished by lots of people on my page to think about having to take a life, and there were 5,000 on one page until I had to close it….but I’m such a fraidy cat that I slept in my clothes for days after I was robbed…And as far as minding my own business…I always have until I discovered the internet…sorry about stirring up emotions here..forgive me. But still, you had no right to post something of mine that doesn’t belong here…I WAS told to get off this site because of getting hurt…seems as if those with a lot more experience already know what these posts are about….I keep journals so I know what its like to “write” about a lot of things…I have a curiosity that has usually gotten me into trouble…if you want to know anything else, ask me instead of stealing from me behind my back…lawyers know better {;){]=

  4. junctionshamus, I think my head just exploded. Maybe I better take some ibuprofen and go to bed.

  5. Per our (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) AD – From politics on Toast: “I was raised in times of “common sense” Something so SIMPLE…you did the crime you did the time..actually, to me its a MORAL ISSUE. If you are not educated or taught right from wrong, then you’re ignorant of it. If you can steal, kill, and destroy without getting caught, those who have no conscience won’t stop until there’s a PENALTY. Futhermore..if it really cost two million to kill someone on death row ( pure stupidity) then maybe crooked politicians would just rather vigilantes did their job for them…or else wait until the depraved visit your home personally and you are forced to take them out yourself or watch your family being molested, raped, tormented and killed..I say..so be it..I was robbed for the first time in my life several months ago..then men were back on the street in a few days..they had held a gun to a pizza man’s head..it changed my life forever..their family told me to my face that these men had been robbing all their lives and robbed again as soon as they made bail. When two of then men in the area took my trash sack out of my hands and walked on either side asking me questions to find out if I was protected, I went straight and bought a GUN..will I use it..you bet your sweet bippy!! ( By the way, one of the policeman who saw the gun the first day I bought it said” I know those men you refer to, put the bullets in the gun now.” ( He told me twice) I am aware they must be all the way in my house..I haven’t slept a decent night since I was robbed, my life will never be the same.”

  6. Bron, I am not touching that one with a pole of any length, especially the image on the right.

  7. Adisen Dilmen:

you arent a little girl. They are much more curious and dont care much what their father says.

If you think reading the bible is enough, you would be mistaken. Reading the bible is a good idea but then reading other works is too.

  8. And for the ones who hope I get punished for coming on here after I was told to get off…don’t worry, I’m going to get punished for it.

  9. Blouise: Thanks for not being ugly to a kid…I will remember that you did not attempt to wound me.

  10. AD, you came to the top legal opinion blog in the country and did not expect to find lawyers? What the hell did you expect to find, service station attendants?

  11. Oh I realized it was pearls before swine before I started typing, little girl.

As to “serving Gods”? I don’t serve imaginary creatures. I have a set of operational principles I’ve distilled from literally hundreds of hours of post-secondary study in philosophy, ethics and comparative religion. I don’t live to be of service to fictions in hope of a better life when I’m dead. I live to be of service to my fellow human beings right now by working to make their lives better which, by the way, includes exposing the ridiculousness of those who would hate them for irrational reasons and justify their hatreds upon a religion. There are beautiful truths underlying most belief systems, but no one system has a corner on those truths. You can learn more about those truths by studying the commonalities in religious, ethical and philosophical systems than you can by buying into a brand name without question or critical thought. You can learn that almost all systems embrace some form of this teaching:

One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.

I’m not angry with you for your unreasoned hatred of others though. I don’t even hate you for it. I truly pity you. I also forgive you. You’ve undoubtedly been encouraged by others to give yourself the self-inflicted wound you carry and to even wear it like a badge of honor. You’ll either learn the error of your ways from the lessons that await you or you won’t. I feel really sorry for you. The lessons in life you have coming your way with your attitude and proud ignorance are going to be harsh. One of these days, reality is going to kick you square in the teeth.

    Laugh all you like.

    The joke is on you.

    1. Otteray Scribe: (LAUGHING) I’ve never once encountered service station attendants who behaved themselves in such a lowly manner…( you’ve got to be kidding) plus the fact that I don’t know anything about these places ( weren’t you reading?) GENE H: such learning doth make thee mad…Ecclesiastes 12:12 And further, by these, my son, BE ADMONISHED: OF MAKING MANY BOOKS THERE IS NO END; AND MUCH STUDY IS A WEARINESS OF THE FLESH. ( read the truth, you’ll rest easier)

  12. Adisen, you come here for material. Then try to argue with a group of top lawyers and other professionals who argue for a living? How’d that work out for you? This is a grownup blawg. Don’t come in here stirring up manure and not expect to get some stink in return. You might consider staying in the kiddie end of the pool.

    1. Otteray Scribe: ( laughing for a week) I’m a KID …you think I don’t know 10 year old “boy” material? Your behavior is EXACTLY like the guys in our classes everyday…sadly, you impressed on me what you do in certain life situations every single day. And if you’re really LAWYERS, I hope I never need one…I’ll remember you for sure. Now go onto the playground in the back yard until you learn to behave yourself properly..NO SUPPER FOR YOU.

  13. Bron,

I want my part to be played by English character actor Sean Bean. Unless, of course, there will need to be a lot of prep time that requires me to work closely with the actor for research purposes. In which case I want my part to be played by English actress Emilia Clarke. She’s adorable. And by adorable, I mean smoking hot.

  14. AD,

Jesus never said anything about hating homosexuals. He never said anything about hating anyone. He was real big on that whole “God is love” thing. And as far as “salvation” goes? For someone who allegedly hates religion so much, you sure do buy into one of the main tools organized religion uses to coerce compliance with their Earthly agenda(s). If you are really interested in what Jesus taught, you need to first forget anything in the Old Testament. Like Leviticus. That’s not even a Christian book technically speaking. If you were to read (but you’d also have to understand it in the proper context) the Gnostic gospels (which were the primary contender for being the widely accepted teachings of Jesus Himself before Constantine and the Council of Nicea choose to turn organized religion and the worship of Christ instead of God – contrary to Jesus’ own teaching – into a political and social tool to control the masses), you’d find out that Jesus was about finding the nature of God in yourself and that the nature of God is love. The teachings of the historical Jesus (and the Gnostic gospels have a better historical claim to this than the New Testament as they are writings that are more contemporaneous to the lifetime of Jesus) have a lot more in common with the teachings of Buddha and the reciprocal nature of doing good and evil in the world (as expressed by both the ideas of karma and the Golden Rule) than they do with this bizarre hate filled divisive and distorted version of American fundamentalist claptrap you have bought into does.

You’re a sick little girl with a mind poisoned by hatred.

    If you’re seeking “salvation”?

You’d really better hope Jesus doesn’t come back today.

You’d be shit out of luck.

    1. Gene H: (laughing) you wasted your time there buddy…say, how many Gods do you serve anyway? They say ignorance is BLISS….You must be ELATED!!

  15. OS,

    Steal away!!

“…I hate RELIGION…I am a believer in what Jesus taught,”

    That’s consistent.

“I perceive that you know absolutely EVERYTHING about RELIGION…but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT SALVATION…( Which seems to be your main problem)”

I have many problems, Adisen. The one you list isn’t one of them though.

  16. Bron: glad I caught your filthy post ( shudder) now I see why decent humans with a proper education and upbringing dare not come onto this post…you are free now to “wallow in your pig pen.” toodle do!!
