Parody Video “The Obama That I Used To Know” Goes Viral

For years, we have had a spirited debate over whether civil libertarians could vote for Barack Obama after his expanding of Bush anti-privacy measures, “hit list” policy, refusal to prosecute officials for torture, and other actions. For those who now oppose Obama, there is now a theme song to express their angst and anger. Even for those who still support Obama, you have to admit it is pretty funny.

The parody of Gotye’s hit “Somebody that I used to know” is the impressive work of Justin Monticello and Ryan Newbrough who have lost faith in Obama.

The song includes a couple of digs at Romney like “You took Obamacare so far. But you left me like a dog strapped on Romney’s car.”

Here are the lyrics:

We could have been so much more than just friends with healthcare benefits

Now and then I think of that election day, November
When you won I felt so happy I could die
Chugged a fifth, paraded in the street
And I thanked God that Palin wasn’t Veep
It felt like change and it’s a hope I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of message
Like this is change we can believe in, yes we can
But college ended, had to pay my rent
At least you’re the first gay president
But the change I got was that I moved in with my mother
Because you won and then you cut me off
Now your speeches never soar as high as unemployment
You took Obamacare so far
But you left me like a dog strapped on Romney’s car
Even the shirt that was on my back
Is owned by China or being arbitraged by Goldman Sachs
Just send in a Predator Drone
‘Cause now you’re not Obama that I used to know
Now you’re not Obama that I used to know
Now I need Obama that I used to know
Sometimes I think that Peace Prize winners shouldn’t have a kill list
But you dumped Bin Laden in the sea so maybe it’s all good
Said you’d rouse my economy
Your big package didn’t stimulate me
Still my American Idol, though
When you sang, “I’m so in love with you”…Obama that I used to know
But you won and then you cut me off
Made out like you’d close Guantanamo and we got nothing
Relocation shouldn’t be that hard
Just strap the prisoners in on top of Romney’s car
No, I don’t need you to legalize
Just keep the feds away from folks like you when you were younger
There’s nothing that you didn’t toke
But now that’s just Obama that I used to know
Obama
That I used to know
Obama
That I used to know
Obama
That I used to know
In 2012 I need Obama that I used to know

  1. Freedom, here I am.

    My favorite line:

“Sometimes I think that Peace Prize winners shouldn’t have a kill list”

  2. I used to support Obama until, I found out that Paul is a disciple of Rand. He is a good catholic that deserves our respect and attention. He has met with the good catholic bishops, while refusing to meet with the renegade nuns that do not know their place.

  3. From the1952 Presidential Contest and my first clear campaign memory probably because it was a jingle-song (I was in 2nd grade):

    Whistle while you work,
    Stevenson’s a jerk.
    Eisenhower’s got the power,
Democrats don’t work! (sung by my Dad)

    or

    Whistle while you work,
    Nixon is a jerk.
    Eisenhower has no power,
Stevenson will work! (sung by my Mom)

At the age of 7 I learned a very important lesson about politics.

  4. I think the video is hilarious. I wish I had thought of it! With respect to Paul Ryan, I am suspicious of anything he says or does. How much can you trust someone that has two first names or two last names? But then again, I am suspicious of folks that are suspicious of him.

  5. nick, If the creators of the video had actually been Obama supporters that voted for him, the video would have been more credible. It smacks of Breitbart but he is dead. Red State likes it.

  6. What Onlooker from Troy said! When you’re an independent you often think you’re in an alternative universe when you hear both sides repeat their talking points.

  7. what rafflaw said….

but also, the change has already happened and been realized….it is only backsliding when the impetus forward is impeded and oppression wins for a moment. The new high water mark is already in the sand. It is the future is here…..

  8. Sharon, Before the selection of Paul Ryan as VP, Obama’s record was the focus. Ryan is a game changer. He wants to shred Medicare and other social programs. He is against abortion even in cases of rape and incest. He also opposes many forms of birth control. He is a hard right wing candidate while Romney was a shifting target.

  9. I feel like the fellow whose doctor just told him the gangrene had spread and, if he wanted to survive, his leg would have to be cut off.

While there is no doubt Obama sold us out in many ways, the notion of being subjected to a GOP government is my gangrene!

  10. “Even for those who still support Obama, you have to admit it is pretty funny.”

Oh, you know better than that. The partisans (on both sides) can’t be honest with themselves, or anyone else. They cling to the bitter end.

  11. I think this is right on because if you strictly judge him by how our economy is doing since he’s been in office, we are in much worse shape than when he became president. But add to that the fact that we’ve been involved in military conflicts since he’s been president and he won the Nobel Peace Prize and hasn’t closed Guatonimo etc., and he had a majority in Congress for his first two years in office, hasn’t passed one single budget plan…..that’s a pretty bleak record to run on..

  12. What Swarthmore Mom said. This is just a hit piece that doesn’t take in the reality of who stopped or impeded some of changes parodied here. Take the Gitmo one for example. Congress refused to go along with the plan to transfer prisoners to US prisons.
    karl,
I don’t think you have been reading too much of Prof. Turley’s posts if you think he supports President Obama’s decision to kill a US citizen who was a member of al-Qaeda.

  13. Karl, I think the proposed austerity in the Ryan budget will harm far more.

  14. You can tell Professor Turley, like myself and tens of millions of others, will be abstaining out of principle his vote from the Presidential election this November when he writes: “Even for those who still support Obama, you have to admit it is pretty funny.”

But of course. Only a hypocritical fool who craves being a laughing stock woud call themselves a “civil libertarian” and “constitutional lawyer” while supporting, as Glenn Greenwald quotes The “New Yorker’s” Steve Coll: “the first instance in American history of a sitting President speaking of his intent to kill a particular U.S. citizen without that citizen having been charged formally with a crime or convicted at trial.”

Obama really is a pioneer in constitutional jurisprudence insofar as he’s taken us back to pre-Magna Carta Serfdom whereby the King acts as judge, jury & executioner of every living thing he surveys.

  15. Great parody but demonstrates after 3 1/2 years you are still left with hope and the change is only what is in your pocket.

  16. When questioned, the creators admitted that they never bothered to vote in 2008, and that they are “undecided” this time. Maybe they are supporters of Paul Ryan.
