Oy Vey: Anti-Semitic Hungarian Politician Discovers His Jewish Roots And Becomes Pariah In Far-Right Party

For those looking for proof of a divine Being, you might want to look this week in Budapest. The star of Hungary’s far-right Jobbik Party, Csanad Szegedi, 30, has been catapulted to national fame through anti-Semitic attacks and charging that Jews have been desecrating national symbols. He has particularly railed against the hidden influence of Jews in government — a message that resonated with a fraction of the electorate in Hungary. Szegedi is a founding member of the Hungarian Guard, which wears black uniforms and striped flags that closely resemble the pro-Nazi party that governed Hungary at the end of World War II and killed thousands of Jews. Szegedi’s career, however, came crashing down when it was learned that, under Jewish law, Szegedi is . . . you guessed it . . . Jewish.

Szegedi has acknowledged that his grandparents on his mother’s side were Jews and his grandmother was an Auschwitz survivor. His grandfather was a veteran of forced labor camps.

Szegedi is now described as a “pariah” in his party.

Making this story all the more enticing is an audio tape of a 2010 meeting between Szegedi and a convicted felon where the felon confronted Szegedi with evidence of his Jewish roots. Szegedi allegedly offers money and favors in exchange for keeping quiet.

Some 550,000 Hungarian Jews were killed during the Holocaust. Fortunately for Szegedi, his grandmother and grandfather survived. They were Orthodox Jews.

Someone is going to have a busy Yom Kippur this year.

  1. “Jews” who hate Jews have been around a long time, and many are prominent. They are usually either of the extreme right-wing or left-wing political spectrum. Those two extremes are virtually identical in how they operate, their value systems, and, of course, their common hatred of Jews. (I’ve never liked the left-right political spectrum as a linear model. The truth is that the political spectrum is more like a circle with the two ends left and right meeting together. This depicts them much closer to reality.)

One of the most extreme cases of a Jew who hates Jews is that of Daniel Burros. You can read about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Burros

Today, modern examples also abound, primarily because Leftists have virtually supplanted Rightwingers in the top role of Jew-hater–and there are a lot more Leftists today than right-wingers.

In addition to hard-core Leftists like Muslims, prominent Leftist Jew-Haters (again, a redundant phrase) include George Soros, Noam Chomsky, and Norman Finkelstein.

Of course, the reality is that these so-called Jewish Jew-haters aren’t really Jewish in the sense that they have genuine Jewish values. What are Jewish values? Well, I am far from an expert on that, but from my close reading and observation over the years, here are some core traits:

    1. Believes in One Almighty.
    2. Places exceptional value on Liberty and Freedom.
    3. Believes strongly in the value of Education and Self-Development.

Of course, one could be non-Jewish and still have these core traits, but these still seem much stronger developed in Jewish people than in other groups.

Extreme Rightwingers, Leftists, and other Jew-haters, however, almost universally abhor #2 above; i.e., they hate liberty and freedom almost as much as they hate Jews themselves, and for much the same reason. It’s a fact that Jews thrive and excel in political environments where there is liberty and freedom, and they die out where there is tyranny. Thus, it was no accident that the founding of America came about because Jewish financiers, including, but not limited to Hyam Salomon (who risked his life for the cause), backed the Colonies, and the birth of America.

  2. Malisha, I like it! However, does this allow me to make small boob jokes when warranted, or is it a one way street?

  3. “Perhaps his Bris will be conducted with a chainsaw. Sounds about right.”

OS, naw, a nail clipper ought to do it.

  4. Bron, Great video. Too bad you didn’t post this 2 days ago, it was International Lefthanders day. I see “Grandma” is a southpaw.

  5. To the nazis all that counts is if you were jewish at some time.
I remember the story of sister Edith Stein, an orthodox jew who converted to christianity and became a nun. She was sent to the camps and killed because she was born a jew.
I know the idea of ‘blood libel’ but when will they accept that Jesus was a jew and if not for the jews there would be no christianity. But then, people always need a scapegoat.

  6. OS,
I almost threw up my late breakfast with that description! 🙂 It sounds like the guy was not playing with a full deck.

  7. Mayfly,
Perhaps his Bris will be conducted with a chainsaw. Sounds about right.

I once knew a guy who decided that since Jesus had been circumcised, he needed to be circumcised himself in order to get into heaven. So he did it himself. Laid the offending flesh out on a pine stump and then used a razor sharp double-bit axe to remove it. Fortunately, his aim was pretty good and he managed to avoid chopping down the tree of life.

  8. there is no karma, it was just a chain of stupidity on this mans part. He knew for a very long time he was Jewish and it finally caught up with him.

  9. This is like a republican finding out if was their party members who escalated the budget deficit more than the democrats did:

So, using raw dollars, Obama did oversee the lowest annual increases in spending of any president in 60 years … using inflation-adjusted dollars, Obama … actually presided over a decrease once inflation is taken into account.

    (PolitiFact).

  10. Big Fish eat smaller fish….. Or the death squad will get them….. Same result…..

  11. I wonder how much of this is brought over from the US since we let in the Nazis who fled Hungary just after the war. The Poles who came over to the US were especially anti-Semitic as well. In fact there were pogroms that were supressed by the Red Army in Krakow just after the war. This area has a long and dishonorable tradition of anti-Semitism and the Nazis used people from these areas to act as guards in the concentration camps. So I am not too surprised, but rather disappointed that they learned nothing.

  12. Oh yes, anybody ever hear of some guy named Schicklgruber from Austria? He became better known after WWI when he moved to Germany & started a small political party. Yeah, the rumor about the little paper hanger was that he too was Jewish. Its funny sometimes how the world turns on odd facts. Some days its the only thing that keeps me as close to sane as I currently am. With nutballs like this loose in the world I am thinking sanity is highly over rated

  13. Yesterday I heard on NPR the Israeli goverrment wants to start a war with Iran shortly before Nov. 6, our Presidential election. The idea is to force Obama to engage in the war with them or lose the election.

How can a person oppose the the Israeli gov’t and not appear anti-jewish?

I hate the manipulation by a supposed ally. But I suspect if they go ahead with it they will get what they want.

  14. ‘but no attainder of treason shall work corruption of blood… Article III US Constitution seems not to be adopted by these racist groups.

But then again the laws of humanity never really were heralded by these men. I admit a bit of schadenfreude in reading about his Downfall..

  15. “Self Loathing” comes to mind Rafflaw. I have read that Hungary has taken a serious turn to anti-Semitism in the last several years, though their baseline isn’t exactly one that can be pointed to with pride.

  16. Wasn’t the fellow who led the Nazi group into Skokie in the 70’s also Jewish? It seems the ones who yell the loudest about the evil Jewish influences, like the politicians who yell the loudest about how evil the gays are, seem to be jewish or gay!
