Video: Philadelphia Officer Sucker Punches Woman At Heritage Parade

This video shows a ranking Philadelphia officer sucker punching a woman during a parade for Puerto Rican heritage. There is no apparent provocation and the woman was walking away at the time. (Updated below)

The woman is showed being led away bleeding. Even if the officer was provoked by the woman or mistook her for someone else, he does not try to grab her or hold her before the sucker punch. The injury to the woman could have been far more serious as she fell to the concrete. Notably, she was surrounded by officers who could have easily restrained the petite woman.

The white shirt of the officer would indicate someone with supervisory authority. What is most striking is the lack of any reaction from officers. We have previously discussed how, even when departments are forced to act against abusive officers, they rarely move against officer who fail to report such abuse or file reports that omit or misrepresent what they clearly witnessed. I would be interested in reading not just the charge but the reports of other officers after this arrest.

UPDATE: The officer is being identified as Lt. Jonathan Josey and the woman is being cited for spraying silly string at officers at a vehicle stop. That’s right, silly string. If that report is correct, Josey responded with a sucker punch. Josey was previously involved in a shooting of a man who robbed a convenience store.

  1. According to other sources she may have fired “Silly String” or sprayed a beer on the police officer. Neither of these things would justify the punch as far as I’m concerned. The officer in question is off the streets until they conclude an investigation.

  2. of course it should be “one large man beats up on one small woman….” one-woman——close anyway.

  3. Adamo, Balanced,
and those who agree with their humor…..

In fact we see the usual one large man beats up one small one. Happens all over the world, regardless of other factors.

Where are the ladies with their castration knives on high. Only Malisha, guess the others are taking care of grandkids. Lucky them.

Own up guys, didn’r he give you a little thrill.
When was the last time you gave yours a smackdown?
    Or received one.

  4. Rafflaw, right, nothing that happened in that video could possibly have legally justified or permitted a punch anywhere on her body, much less in her face. If the cop is not charged with assault, that is an indictment of his department and should be referred to DOJ for investigation.

  5. I would love to see the psychological profile test for police officers. The fish rots from the head down. Cops are just the lacky’s for the attorneys that run the judicial system. If they know they can get away with this kind of crap and that the attorneys will protect them, what do you think is going to happen.

  6. I actually think they were hit by the water the guy in the back threw and probably thought she did it. Biiiig mistake on their part.

  7. This officer should be not only fired, he should be arrested for assault. Even if she called this cop every name in the book, which there is no evidence of, the cop assaulted her in full view of many police who have a duty to uphold the law. And they did nothing. I am with OS. Remind me to stay out of Philadelphia.

  8. The officer was fully justified, and actually showed amazing restraint. Apparently she said something he considered offensive about the Prophet Mohammed. If only we were back on the good ole streets of Sana’a we could have witnessed him carving her tongue out of her mouth.

  9. Clearly any criticism of any kind against this police officer would be racist, as the officer is black. Everybody knows that only non-blacks can be racist, whereas blacks, by definition, cannot be racist. Therefore, using this Leftist “logic,” we can conclude that the Hispanic woman was exhibiting some form of racism, and thus the police officer’s reaction, if anything, was too gentle.

  10. A couple of things, it really wasn’t a sucker punch, she saw it coming and it does not appear that the conversation was over as she was sort of facing him as she inched away.

But I don’t see anything that would warrant the punch, she was obviously not a threat and if he needed to arrest her he could have done that without it. This is going to cost the city a bunch of money – it should come out of the cops salary but it won’t

  11. I like Nicks take, but…..

Sha was far and with the noise doubt he would have heard her.

Look again. She spots him, turns away and heads away from him. He goes after her and sucker punches her, cuffs her and gives her to two other officers. What does sha do but cast a glance over her shoulder. What does here face and eyes say.

Number two: He uses his hands. Not a police weapon. Not even needed, He could cuff her easily without the punch.

Solution: They have a private thing going, these two. A love affair.
He says: “I told you dammit not to go in the parade today. You could get hurt. Do as I say.”

Yeah, I know love at first fight.

  12. The cops are reacting to the stream of water coming from someone else, not from her. That person is standing behind her, so from the perspective of the cops, it came from her direction (at their backs, so they didn’t see her not do it).

  13. At the very beginning of the video, you can see her flinging water from a water bottle all over the cop crowd. It is in her left hand, low by her waist. Several other people in the crowd are doing the same.

I’m not a lawyer. Isn’t that some kind of assault?

  14. I look forward to learning the back story here. On the face of it, this is inexcusable. Just another reason to stay the hell out of Philly. I have a list of towns and cities around the country that I am willing to drive a hundred miles out of my way to avoid. It is not a long list, but just got longer by one.

  15. The visceral reaction by the cop tells me she may have said the “n” word. I’m NOT justifying his behavior @ all. That’s merely my take on it.
