Texas Pastor Warns Obama Election Has Opened Path For The Rise Of The AntiChrist

Robert Jeffress, senior pastor at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, is back in the news. Jeffress once made headlines in denouncing Mormonism as a cult — he supported Rick Perry. Now, the magachurch pastor has warned his flock that the election of Barack Obama will lead to the rise of the Antichrist. He was careful however not to be too extreme. He noted that he did not believe Obama was the antiChrist because “the Antichrist is going to have much higher poll numbers when he comes.”

Jeffress explained that “President Obama is not the Antichrist. But what I am saying is this: the course he is choosing to lead our nation is paving the way for the future reign of the Antichrist.” The way to stop the antiChrist: you guessed it . . . vote Republican “to push back against this evil that is overtaking our nation.”

What is frightening is not that there are fringe characters like Jeffress spouting off such utter nonsense, but that he has a very large following. This following continues despite the fact that I long ago outted Michael Eisner as the Biblical Beast.

  1. Gene H:

Have you read Atlas Shrugged? It has just occurred to me that it is remarkable similar to the passion of the Christ.

You have disciples, torture, betrayal, heaven, Judas [in the form of Dagny] and even a fallen world. Am I just reading into it? It seems so obvious that it cant be a coincidence.

  2. Bron,

It depends on your definition of God and that God’s relationship to both predestination and whether Revelations is literal or not, but superficially the logic holds. It does, however, work as a joke regardless.

  3. P Smith, You might be right. They truly believed Obama would be voted out of office. They said the polls were skewed. They can’t understand that the rest of the world does not think the same way they do, and, also, believe that those that don’t are condemned to hell.

  4. There is only one reason a nutbag tries to conflate a person with “the anti-christ”: the nutbag is trying to incite an assassination attempt on Obama.

The only difference between Jeffress and the Cold Stone employee is the choice of words.

  5. David Blauw – I saw that too but the info came from a tiny scrap found in a dumping ground in Egypt.

What most fundies don’t understand is that most of this sludge they take as the inerrant work for the Great Cosmic Muffin is actually scraps of rumors of rehashed oral traditions written, translated, lost, rewritten, buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters. The veracity of any of it, the accuracy to the original tale even the broad outlines have been lost for millenia. Most of what you read today is the remnants of what a bunch of semi-literate priests thought sounded about right for the way they thought at the time (an era know as the Dark Ages for a reason). If God really is speaking to them through this work He really does work in mysterious ways.

A newly discovered fragment of the oldest surviving copy of the New Testament indicates that, as far as the Antichrist goes, theologians, scholars, heavy metal groups, and television evangelists have got the wrong number. Instead of 666, it’s actually the far less ominous 616.
The new fragment from the Book of Revelation, written in ancient Greek and dating from the late third century, is part of a hoard of previously unintelligible manuscripts discovered in historic dumps outside Oxyrhynchus in Egypt. Now a team of expert classicists, using new photographic techniques, are finally deciphering the original writing.

  7. Frankly, I read with fascination “some’ scholars work, explaining the number of the beast is 616, he claims the original translations are wrong.
I have seen nothing since. …I think it would be great if the Evangelicals have to go back and edit all their warnings of the sign of the beast.

  8. Re: video immediately preceding my first post.

I call BS — this is nothing more than reading one’s interpretation into text instead of allowing the text to speak for itself. My Grandma said you can always find what you’re looking for in the Bible even if it isn’t there.
More formally stated, a text out of context is a pre-text. A large number of criticisms are available to utterly refute the interpretation in the video.

Here is just one — Aramaic is not the most primitive form of Hebrew. Biblical Aramaic (the Aramaic in the Older Testament — about 250 words out of 600,000), like Hebrew, is one of many Semitic languages at the time, sorta like French and Spanish are both Romantic languages. Furthermore, the Aramaic spoken in the time of Jesus is not Biblical Aramaic, sorta like Old English is not like modern English.

Here’s another — the great weight of commentaries agree that the Satan verse referenced in Isaiah was directed at a local king and would have been so understood by the first hearers. At the time, the Jewish beliefs of demons and angels was very rudimentary. Seventy years in captivity among the Babylonians and their developed hierarchy of angels and demons greatly influenced the Jewish people and later writers including those of the Gospels.

The more important question is why someone would come up with this type of interpretation and disseminate it. I would remind the author that Satan’s great sin was pride. Long before he tempted Eve with the same, Satan wanted to be like God. “Believers” who try to make the Bible say something other than what it actually does also want the same.

  9. “you can read it right here, christianity is on the decrease in the U.S”.

Thanks for the info, Bruce. You’ve made my day.

  10. JUde, Pastor Jeffres ended up supporting Romney when he became the nominee. He said voting for a mormon was preferable to voting for a supporter of abortion and gay marriage.

  11. I would think having elected a member of a “dangerous cult” would be a more likely path to the Anti-Christ?

  12. I guess conservative Christians think God can make a mistake. I guess they really arent true believers.

Gene H, is my logic correct? 🙂

  13. And the bible says the number of the beast is 666 – RONALD WILSON REAGAN – 6 letters in each name!!!

also true for Drusus Julius Caesar who was emperor in 33 CE when the temple was destroyed

  14. Bruce: “how many of you attend church services?”

Uh, me — but it is getting harder and harder. You should have been with me at Wednesday night prayer meeting following the election!

I don’t understand why all these folk don’t see the hand of God in getting Obama elected — He sent not one but two hurricanes to make get the President re-elected [my poor attempt at being snarky]. Of course, the fundamentalist response to the election– which I heard Wednesday night — is that God has decided to pour out his wrath on America, sort of like when Judah was taken captive by Babylon.

Oh, if only Judah had listened to Isaiah. I apologize for the long Bible quote and I am not proselytizing. I’m just asking that instead of castigating Obama, that Christians start listening to the President the way the Jews should have listened to Isaiah:

    Chapter 58 (Isaiah quoting God):

1“Shout it aloud, do not hold back.
Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Declare to my people their rebellion
and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.
    2 For day after day they seek me out;
they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right
and has not forsaken the commands of its God.
They ask me for just decisions
and seem eager for God to come near them.
3 ‘Why have we fasted,’ they say,
‘and you have not seen it?
    Why have we humbled ourselves,
    and you have not noticed?’
“Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please
    and exploit all your workers.
4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for people to humble themselves?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed
and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the Lord?
6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
    to set the oppressed free
    and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
    and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
    9 Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
