Paleontological Perversity? Saudi Religious Police Shutdown Dinosaur Exhibit

220px-Marasuchus170px-Ministry_of_Interior_Saudi_Arabia.svgThe Saudi Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice is a religious police force that has been a constant presence in the Kingdom arresting woman having coffee with colleagues or forcing young girls to burn to death in fire rather than run out without their scarves. Now the religious police in Dammam marched into a popular dinosaur exhibit and shut it down without any explanation of why the dinosaurs threatened the virtue of good Muslims.

The religious police reportedly had marched into the educational exhibit featuring plaster models of dinosaurs and turned off the lights — causing panic among the children who found themselves in a dark room with dinosaurs and screaming men.

It is not clear if one of the dinosaurs was the “horny dinosaur” recently discovered in Utah (no not former Senator Larry Craig).

This triggered tweets from Saudis like “Dinosaurs are a paleontological life form from an ancient geological era, and our clerics are a paleontological life form from an ancient social era.” The tweets after the bizarre incident demonstrates why the Kingdom is joining authoritarian governments like China and Iran to seek limits on social media and Internet sites.

  1. I am so glad we saved them from Sadam aren’t you? They are such wonderful progressive human beings:). How are they any better than Osama Ben Laden or the Taliban in Afganistan? Yet we support and protect them.

They are just like our Taliban aka Christian Right.

  2. rafflaw:

The shame of it is that we need their oil too much……… to MELT them!!!!

nah, we really dont anymore, we have plenty and are on our way to becoming a member of APEX. American Petroleum Exporter. It is a club of one.

  4. The Saudi’s continue to move the calendar back in an attempt to hold down women in their country. However, most major religions relegate women as second class believers.
When you mix religion into politics and governance, this is the kind of Taliban like decisions that you get.

  5. Maybe they will build their own ‘Creation Museum’ to show the dinosaurs being ridden by the ancient Bedouins.

  6. Who knows what is next on the agenda. Could be anything under the sun when arbitrary rules are enforced. Maybe next it will be the plankton museaum.

  7. East,

We really don’t need the oil… But hey… We deplete theirs first we win….

Now on to the US… Nebraska with a shallow water table… Won’t allow a pipeline over its land…. Without proper safe guards…. The Feds are planning on taking it out of there hands… And grant easements to keystone oil…

  8. AY,
‘Tis true. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was formerly known as the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition. Ratzinger used to be Prefect of it.

  9. Dredd….

    I thought I’d heard it all…. The office of inquisition….. Really….

  10. Yes AY, or the creation museum where dinos and humans are depicted together.

Fundies of many religions have a similar anti-science foundation and bias.

And let’s not forget the Office of the Inquisition, still existing, but now under a new name.

Several House committees do that work in D.C.

  11. Wonderful…..RWL…. Lest we forget the clothing of lady justice by the Supreme Court…..
