Femininity and The Felon: Polanski Laments How Pill Is “Masculinising” Women

220px-Roman_Polanski_Emmanuelle_Seigner_Césars_2011As many on this blog know, I am not a big fan of Roman Polanski and his successful evasion of arrest for the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in 1977. Many folks in France continue to rally behind Polanski who has successfully fought extradition for decades. Now, during the unveiling of his movie “Venus in Fur,” a satire on sexism starring his wife Emmanuelle Seigner, Polanski decried the loss of real women and how birth control pills are “masculinising” women. Of course, it is some small degree of progress that Polanski is actually focusing on fully grown women at this point. Yet, most women would find him a rather unwelcomed expert on anything dealing with females given his continued fugitive status as a child rapist.

Polanski was 43 years old when he was arrested in Los Angeles for the sexual assault of 13-year-old Samantha Geimer during a photo shoot for French Vogue magazine. He was indicted on six counts of criminal behavior, including rape, but reached a plea bargain to plead guilty to the charge of “Unlawful Sexual Intercourse with a minor.” He was ordered to undergo 90 days of psychiatric evaluation at Chino State Prison and was then released pending sentencing. However, Polanski was fearful that the judge would not follow the recommendation of no jail and only probation. Accordingly, he fled to France on February 1, 1978 hours before the scheduled sentencing.

Polanski reportedly lamented that the pill had blurred the distinctions between the sexes, though I fail to see how pregnancy dangers is so essential to Polanski’s view of the sexes. He added “I think that now offering flowers to a lady becomes indecent, that’s how I feel about it . . . I think to level the genders — it’s purely idiotic. I think it’s a result… of progress in medicine. I think that the Pill has changed greatly the woman of our times, ‘masculinising’ her — how would you say it? . . . I think that it chases away the romance from our lives and that’s a great pity.” The danger of pregnancy is an essential part of the romance? Of course, given his criminal history, lawful consent is not so essential.

  1. Skipped a lot of the comments because they’re dealing with polanski.
unimportant to the issue, which is how the use of birth control has changed women – NOT for the better.

Women are more aggressive, and they are not just “in control” of their sexuality: They are seeking LICENSE to do whatever they wish, without consequences – across the board. Get drunk, hookup with random stranger, wake up the next morning with regrets, report you’ve been raped:Man’s life is effectively destroyed for what was consensual, even desired, the night before.
And her life? Unaffected, no one even knows who she is.
And it has been codified (in UK law, not yet in US, I believe) that if both are drinking, it’s rape, automatically, because she cannot give valid consent… Even if HE is also drunk, he’s viewed as capable of giving consent.

    Double standard much?

How about we talk birth control.
Man has condoms and abstinence – for which he is denigrated.
Woman has condoms, the pill, vaginal inserts, IUDs, morning-after pills, and D&C for final backup. Or, she could use an aspirin tablet, held firmly between her knees… Abstinence used to be prized in women… But when every other cow on the planet gives the milk away for free, I guess it doesn’t much matter what she does. So they all act like whores… Hmmm. ANYWAY…
If those fail, there’s abortion. Adoption. Abandonment. Name the father, and get the courts to enforce child support. And the father has ZERO say in ANY of those options. And doesn’t even need to BE the father, just NAMED – and is considered served with notice even it’s knowingly sent to a false address, or the wrong man. Paternity fraud is A-OK.

As to the exact chemistry: Women are meant to go through certain hormonal changes every month. It’s what biology expects. Birth control works by interfering with that normal process. To think there’s no result is foolish at least. Progesterone can become estrogen or testosterone. BOTH are steroids, IE: Sex Hormones. Men tend to have more Testosterone, women more Estrogen. So, we tell women their body is always pregnant, so they don’t have the monthly cycle… And then we think they’ll be the same entity? That’s like pouring bleach and ammonia together and telling everyone nothing will happen. (It produces toxic gas.)

And has it made women happier or more civilized or helped families become closer? Or has it enabled the hookup culture, one-night stands, uncommitted relationships?

    The thing speaks for itself…

  2. Fred:

Your comment defies intelligent discussion because it demonstrates an abysmal ignorance of the social, cultural, political and economic history of this country following World War II.

  3. Regardless of Polanski’s directorial skills, he is one sorry excuse for a human being. His views on masculinity are meaningless.

  4. Fred, you can thank Richard Nixon and the Fed for destroying the dollar so that 2 adults in the family had to go outside the home to earn income. Nixon decoupled the dollar from gold, opening the door to tremendous debasement of the dollar. Baby Boomers just happened to have a work ethic.

  5. I was an E-5 Electrician’s Mate in the Navy. I worked on 480 volt switchboards hot at sea..

I don’t care what the Marines are doing.

Matt Johnson – “Army guy did that. He was eight years older than her. Don’t blame the Navy.”

We can blame the marines for shooting rampages.

  8. The “masculinity” that Polanski refers to involves having developed breasts and hips, not developed arms and pectorals.
