Faith-Based Polio: Taliban Undermines Global Efforts To Eradicate Polio After Banning Vaccinations

220px-Polio_Egyptian_SteleThe Taliban has long personified the ignorance and intolerance found among religious extremists. Indeed, they first attracted international attention with their destruction of the famous giant Buddhas of Bamiyan. However, it is always impressive to see the degree to which its Islamic beliefs seem to produce uniformly harmful impacts on the populations under its cruel control. A report last week documented how there is a serious polio outbreak that is threatening global progress against the disease. The Taliban has denounced vaccinations as a Western plot and threatened anyone who receives one. It is a tragic irony since the disease has long been the scourge of the Middle East going back to ancient times, as this Egyptian tablet from the 18th Dynasty (1403–1365 BC) reflects. The ancient populations could only dream of a cure but, now that one is available, the Taliban again seeks to force its areas back into the dark ages.


Health officials have reported scores of crippled children as a result of the Taliban’s policy. The United States fueled the opposition to the program among extremists when it was disclosed that the CIA used a Pakistani vaccination team to gather intelligence about al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden — who was then killed by U.S. Special Forces. That success may prove to be a disaster for polio operations in reinforcing the medieval fears of groups like the Taliban.  It is treated as just another part of God’s plan for an ever-suffering humanity.

Pakistan has the highest rate of polio in the world following by Nigerian and Afghanistan. THere is also an outbreak in Syria to add to the misery of that population.

  2. Oky, I’m a big believer in karma. I repeat, I wasn’t bustin’ on you. I like you. And, while I was never on the autism/vaccine bandwagon, I had a very open mind. I know how evil big Pharma can be. I worked for them when Prozac was first released. I needed to shower 4-5 times daily! I just don’t buy the connection. However, to each their own. If I offended you, I sincerely apologize.

  4. In my prior life as a human I got one of the first year’s version of the polio vaccine and I got polio. I healed. Quickly. Within six months. That being said, I am leary of polio vaccines or any preventive vaccine. These people around here get flu shots in the Walmart. Jeso.

    1. Much better than flu vaccines is mega doses of vitamin D3, The sun will give you 5,000-8,000 in a half hour but who is out in the winter? After a lifetime (over 50years) of 6 week colds and every other year of strep throat and walking pnemonia. I thought I had nothing to lose. So at about 4000 units a day all year. No colds. No flu. Nada. And if everyone around at work is raging with the infections, I might have a sniffle for 24hrs. Really everyone its amazing. Check the internet for more info. Big pharma does not want you to know about this one.

    Everyone made mistakes in the yesterdays, try to learn from the mistakes & let go of the baggage.

    Learn what good karma & bad karma is.

    A lil trick for when you get around bad karma is to take one hand & reach up & brush it off of your shoulder & then repeat with the other hand/shoulder.

    Just be decent & the good karma builds up.

    Let others be themselves, but always try to be decent yourself, it’s like a damn forcefield after a while, and other see/feel/respond to it.

    In my biz I used to need muscle, lots of muscle, often it was fresh out of the pen & looking to even the score for where they felt wronged.

    .And then they had to comfort me. No problem, I’m a likable guy considering the alternatives. LOL

    Yup, I knew you were not an anti-vaxxer because of your tendency to prize reality testing. I knew you had been concerned about this year’s batch of flu vaccine. BTW, #1 son asked how Mama was doing now. You can send an update backchannel. I had the shot last year and still got the flu. However, everyone I talked to has said that if I had not gotten the shot, I would have been a lot sicker than I was. Frankly, had I been very much sicker, I would never have left the hospital alive.

  19. Psychologist Stephen Lewandosky collaborates w/ the aforementioned Yale law prof Kahan. He did the study showing the conspiracy theorists believing vaccines causing autism and also believing the moon landing was faked. Oky, I know I can be a ball buster, but I’m not doing that now. I promise all I will do is thank you for your honest reply. So, do you believe the moon landing was faked?

    1. I didn’t believe the moon landing was faked till idiot Pres. Bush said we need to go there. They way he gave the speech was weird. Lol. By the way, does anybody know why the govt. disbanded a lot of its space exploration?
