Dammed If You Do . . . Volvo Warns Viewers Not To Try This At Home

This is an incredible commercial. However, it was particularly interesting for me because yesterday we discussed liability for warning defects in television commercials. Look for the warning at the end.

While at first you might think it is a bit of overkill to warn that this was done by professionals, think again. This type of commercial often inspires copy cats, particularly teens who want to show that they can do the same feat.

The other amazing thing about this truck commercial is how Van Damme is so much better of an athlete than an actor.

  1. This video was made the day before the live stunt. Jean Claude van Damme is 53 years old. 53! DOB 18 Oct 1960. You guys watch the video while I go get an Ibuprofen.

  2. joelbwriter: “But what surprises me the most is that van Damme did anything without them contractually having to show his naked butt.”

LOL, I am likewise surprised, and greatly disappointed by the oversight.

  3. That was an amazing video. I am truly impressed that Van Damme can still do that. I am wondering how he could do that while the trucks are moving and what safeguards were in place in case he or the drivers faltered?

  4. Jag, Doing pretty good. We’re coming to your continent next month. Any info on Milan, Florence, Tuscany, Nice, Monaco? I think of folks like you living in the winter dark. Our daughter uses light therapy for seasonal affective disorder. She also takes vitamin D. She lives in the Twin Cities. Have you ever had problems. If so, what do you do?

  5. Nick….. Vagina???? REALLY????

“Why do people say “grow some balls”? Balls are weak and
sensitive! If you really wanna get tough, grow a vagina. Those things take
    a pounding.”

  6. They need to have this guy teach Jay Cutler how to stretch so he doesn’t keep injuring his vagina.

  7. Professor, seriously? You’re surprised, after all this time, how much better an athlete he is than an actor? This puzzles me. I was sort of hoping for a “DO NOT ATTEMPT” message at the very end. Saying it’s done by professionals on a closed course (which all car commercials with a moving vehicle say, even when they’re just parallel parking it seems), just double-dog-dares someone to go out and try it. I thought Volvo was the safety-first company among vehicle companies. But what surprises me the most is that van Damme did anything without them contractually having to show his naked butt. It would work in Europe!

  8. Were they really going backward or was the ad filmed going forward and played back in reverse.
