Haram Is Where the Heart Is: Muslim Clerics Denounce Valentine’s Day As UnIslamic

225px-Victorian-valentines-cards-two-cherubs-red-heartsIslamic leaders celebrated Valentine’s Day again this year by denouncing the holiday as anti-Islamic and calling for a “Modesty Day” instead that celebrates such items as burkas and veils. Students clashed today in Peshawar as dozens of liberal students sought to celebrate the holiday and defy orders from religious leaders to boycott the holiday. The result was an exchange of rocks and bricks between the pro-Valentine and anti-Valentine protesters. At least one student was shot and wounded. In Indonesia, warnings were issued that celebration of the holiday was an offense of Islam. In Malasysia religious monitors have been patrolling the streets looking for unIslamic practices. Valentine’s Day has been declared haram, or forbidden.

We have previously discussed the opposition to the holiday from Islamic clerics.

The latest clash occurred at the University of Peshawar when the rally in favor of the holiday was met by anti-holiday protesters. Some fired shots into the air.

Here is one of the happy Valentine’s Day messages being given to Muslim young people about how the holiday is a conspiracy of Christians and Jews and is worse the Ebola:

Many in Pakistan celebrate the holiday in private to avoid attacks.

What is clear is that Islamic clerics fear that such holidays loosen their control over the populace. Indeed, it has become a symbol for many students of self-determination and free speech. For others, it is simply a nice holiday like this article from a Pakistani student. Indeed, he notes that St. Valentine was not a particularly bad guy even if you viewed this as a religious holiday:

Saint Valentines in whose memory this day is observed is popularly believed to have been imprisoned for performing marriages of those soldiers who were forbidden to marry by the then Roman Empire. He eventually died in jail. If I were to celebrate his memory how can the same act be deemed un-Islamic? Marriage is encouraged under all school of thoughts of Islam and no group of Individuals belonging to any profession be it the army or be it muftis or mullahs are forbidden from getting married under Islam. Now, I am sorry if Saint Valentine did not use to read the Nikah Khutba, since Islam was introduced much after he passed away. . . .

Perhaps we should rebrand Valentine’s day as Waris Shah day or Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai day to make it more acceptable.

It is an odd thing to rage against a holiday committed to love and relationships. Ironically, the true meaning of the holiday is probably best understood in countries like Pakistan where couples defy the government and religious orthodoxy to celebrate or declare their love. While many have denounced the holiday as cheesy and over-marketed, stories like these make me value the holiday a bit more.

As for me, I just dug out the driveway (for a second time after McLean plowed a wall of ice in front of my recently cleaned driveway) and I am now heading out for flowers for Leslie. I hope everyone has a wonderful and a safe holiday. To those young people in Pakistan, history has shown that the bounds of human love and affection are far more lasting than government censorship or harassment. It finds a way like water to undermine the strongest walls. So Happy Valentine’s Day to all, even to those romance-challenged clerics who would apparently would prefer a dose of Ebola over a card of affection.

  1. It says a lot about what Turley’s site chooses to highlight, a MEMRI video. Not that many muslims adhere to a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam but have it forced on them by Saudi paid clerics.

Here’s tweet code pink sent out. You all will see what you want to see, and look for what confirms your bias.

  2. Randyjet, why are you asking to hear from Muslim folks regarding this issue? The post tells you that some Muslims folks who are pro St Valentine’s were celebrating it, and the quote from the student supports the celebrating of it. What else do you want?
Or is it one your thinly veiled attacks against Islam that you will deny has any Islamophobic root?

  3. Al,
I think the last thing we need is to have the military get involved with the control of our government. I don’t think things are so bad that a military coup is needed, goodness gracious that would make things a magnitude worse—careful what you wish for.

The Republicans, or what is left of that party, appear to have as their only goal the destruction of President Obama. Their concept of compromise is their way or no way. The GOP intransigence has left President Obama with the choice of letting a minority within the minority party dictate his policy or fight for his policy proposals. Elections have consequences and Obama has won two of them.

If your main concern is the issuance of Executive Orders then Obama is certainly no more extreme than any other President—that may not make it right but he has plenty of precedence to draw from.

Plenty of blame to go around but to suggest a military take over is not only extreme but so unnecessary. Come on…2016 will be here before you know it and then we’ll have a new President. And right now, I don’t see a Republican candidate capable of winning the Presidency over two to three possible Dem opponents.

I’m not at all pleased with our President, he has really been a disappointment to me. However, he is not a threat to our Republic and he is not solely responsible for the near shut down of our government.

  4. Listening to your comments of the last few weeks with regard to president Obama I am scared for our nation. The senate appears to do nothing to control this man, in fact most of them on the left that hold an elected office seem to urge the president on to keep using executive orders. At some point this madness has to stop. I never wanted the military to ever get involved in the internal affairs for the United States, but now I see no other way out of this mess.

  5. “None of this blasphemy should be allowed in free countries.”

Just think about the logic of that statement for a second.

You should protest about the views of people you disagree with over major moral issues, and argue them down, but you should not try to silence them, however repugnant you find them. That is the bitter pill free speech requires us to swallow.

  6. Somehow, eventually, they will die off. Seven hundred years ago to not so long ago, Christians burned people at the stake for less. They died off. All we can do is hope that these deranged and dangerous scum will also die off. Every thing they say that may have any credibility at all is more than negated by actions and words such as these.

Imagine the torment people go through not being able to express themselves. Killing them will only make them stronger. They must be allowed to die off in their own countries. None of this blasphemy should be allowed in free countries. This is one area where our government should exercise power. The government above and before religion.

  7. Where there is latin there are saints:

The feast of St. Valentine of February 14 was first established in 496 by Pope Gelasius I, who included Valentine among all those “… whose names are justly reverenced among men, but whose acts are known only to God.” As Gelasius implies, nothing was yet known to him about his life.

    (Wikipedia, “Saint Valentine”).

    Whatever melts your chocolate.

  8. Ironically, St. Valentine was martyred by being beheaded by the Roman Emperor Claudius II. So, I would think radical Muslim’s would embrace this day. It’s sad that the whole world cannot embrace one day of LOVE for each other on this day.
There is another reason why this day is very special to me, because it’s my birthday!

  9. Of COURSE the Muslims are against St. Valentine’s Day. Any holiday whose major symbol is a heart and whose reason for being celebrated centers on love would CERTAINLY be something the mullahs wouldn’t tolerate.

  10. For all Islamists….. from now on, because you hate being alive…. when you reach Puberty….. you must commit suicide, and go get your freakin’ virgins ahead of time.

  11. The video was a good laugh. St. Valentines Day…the whole world will turn red. A virus worse than AIDS or ebola.

Seems nothing fun can be tolerated

  12. I would like to hear the opinions of some of our Muslim folks on this subject. Is this consistent with Islam in denying all persons their right to celebrate holidays that some clerics did like? We often decry such practices, but then we don’t hear from other Muslims who do not agree.

  13. Well, news today about campaign here to name everyone stop sending real Paper Valantines because of carbon footprint is even more pernicious.liberral nanny staters se to leave no American job untrampled.

  14. Religion is used to ends love people and to keep others in power.
Kansas lawmakers passed a bill Tuesday that would permit businesses and government employees to deny service to same-sex couples on the basis of their religious principles. It would appear that whether it is Islam or Christianity these fanatics are all the same.
