MSNBC Host: “Keep It Right Here On Morning Jew”

200px-Sigmund_Freud_LIFE220px-Mika_BrzezinskiWe have another addition to our series “Perils of the Press.” There are Freudian Slips and then there are Freudian falls from a high cliff. The later seems of a more apt description of MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski mistake this morning. After interviewing Israel’s Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer, Brzezinski said “keep it right here on Morning Jew.”


I honestly hope that people are not too hard on Brzeninski. Such slips have happened to all of us and often tend to be funny, if somewhat embarrassing. When hosts like Brzeninski are juggling scripts and interviews, I am more surprised that such slips do not happen more often.

Freudian slips are actually called parapraxis and thought to be a mistake in speech that reflects some “dynamically repressed” thought. As a juris doctor, I would diagnosis a simple close pronunciation of “Joe” and “Jew” but then again I have so many Freudian slip and falls that I could keep an army of analysts busy for centuries. I once introduced a person who caught me at a speech with a long tirade against the legal system named Coring as “Mr. Boring.” To his credit, even he got a good laugh from that one as my face turned a bright red.

    Here’s my problem. The word “Jew” is being worked on by the PC Police. They want you to say Jewish. They want you to say “He’s Jewish” instead of “He’s a Jew.” I have known Jews all my life. I have called them Jews. They have NEVER expressed a problem w/ it. They have changed it from colored, to Negro, to black, to Afro American, to African American to person of color. It is insane! I stayed w/ black and I will never change.

    I watched it, it’s a nothingburger.

    That is cool as long as you don’t bring religion into it by telling them that Jesus Christ was a lowly Jew (In the sense that Paul mentioned in in Hebrews).

  4. The coddlers of terrorists who openly state they want to wipe Israel off the map is anti-Semitism framed as liberalism. I was @ the Farmers Market in Madison last Saturday. A more liberal event you will not find. I listened to some protestors, ostensibly liberal, conversing. I am shocked how, over the last 10-15 years, liberals have become anti-Semites. Shocking.

    1. NIck I have deleted two comments in violation of the civility rule. For others on this thread, both sides seem eager to trash the other on a personal basis. We are not interested in such discussion and this blog has a civility rule that strives to keep comments on the merits of these issues, not those people arguing on one side or another.

  19. Poor thing. Sounds like a meaningless slip, and not derogatory in any way. As Turley said, juggling and previewing scripts. There’s absolutely nothing anti-Semitic with the word “Jew.” Jew is the noun, Jewish is the adjective, and Judaism is the faith. Beautiful religion, actually.

    As Professor Turley pointed out, all of us have made embarrassing slips at one point or another.

  20. This one is, unfortunately, a ‘stunner.’ I’m in Hollywood, starring in a successful show about counseling. I’ve worked all day from VERY early in the morning till mid-evening. The show is about double mastectomy. We chose an actress who had actually had a double mastectomy to do the dramatic part. At the end of the show (thank God, taped instead of live) the following SOMEHOW came out of my mouth: “Well, at least you have gotten a lot off your chest tonight.” She replied: “Thanks a LOT.” Never have I been more embarassed or more (thank you, British citizens) gobsmacked.
