Just Inhale? The Democrats Could Be Helped By The Legalization Movement But Remain Largely Silent

Marijuana Leaf220px-Democratslogo.svgThere is an interesting (and potentially important) change occurring on the ballots of states with tight Senate races. Legalization of marijuana issues are appearing on the ballots in places like Alaska and Oregon and are expected to draw in younger voters. This could be the margin that the Democrats need to reduce their expected losses. However, the Democratic leadership has followed the lead of President Obama in opposing (or at least not supporting) legalization efforts. The result is that the Democrats could benefit from the ballot pull of pot but do not appear to be capitalizing on the prospect.

Brookings Institution expert John Hudak expects an influx of potential young Democratic votes. All that is required is a couple seats to stay blue for the Democrats to keep the Senate — though Joe Biden might have to become a full-time member of the Senate in casting votes on ties. The GOP is widely expected to make gains in both houses but the pot issue could be a game changer in a couple of states. The GOP is counting on Alaska and Oregon.

These type of wedge issues have worked for the GOP with the gay marriage ballot issues in the past. Hudak says however that the Democrats are missing this “real opportunity” to use pot at the polls.

They seem to be trying to have it both ways in a political version of Bill Clinton insisting that he tried marijuana but “I didn’t inhale.”

  1. SWM won’t have to look up Blanche DuBois. But, she is still chasing windmills nonetheless. Some folks are too stupid to be intellectually honest. Folks like SWM just break my heart. She has a good mind, it’s just derailed. “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” United Negro College Fund

  2. Fiver, those are some great examples of God’s love in action. My soul overbrimmith.

  3. Well, I guess someone should tell the folks working those preemie units that the little rug rats are not persons yet.

Perhaps it’s on God’s list of things to do. But I hope not. God’s kind of a dangerous guy to have around newborns:

Yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb. Hosea 9:16

Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up. Hosea 13:16

Because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die. 2 Samuel 12:14

    1. fiver – all that Old Testament stuff about kids only counts for Jews, Gentiles are not covered by the Old Testament.

  4. Squeeky, great analogy, comparing pro choice folks to die hard, biblical Christians. Claasic. If that don’t wake them up and embarrass them, well, nothing will. You must be hanging out at Truth Revolt.

  5. Rand Paul’s “personhood” amendment affects far more than abortion. Another belief of a theocrat is a belief in creationism which both Pauls ascribe too.

    1. Nick – I am not sure that ‘Blanche DuBois feminist’ is an accurate nomenclature. Blanche is never really a feminist and ends up having a nervous breakdown. “I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.” .If you are describing someone as a Blanche Dubois feminist, just what are you saying about them?

  6. Oh, and I love the science aspects of this. Let’s see, some goober thinks the Earth is 6,000 years old and here come the folks throwing the science argument around, “Gee, maybe your view wasn’t insane even 200 years or more ago, but don’t you know we have made a lot of scientific progress, and now we can carbon date stuff and isotope date it??? Get with the program!”

BUT, when it comes to abortion, those same type people act like it is 200 or more years ago and that science has taught us nothing about fetal development. My response is, “Gee, maybe your view wasn’t insane even 200 years or more ago, but don’t you know we have made a lot of scientific progress, and now we can actually take real time pictures of babies in the womb??? Get with the program!”

  7. Squeeky, Science, which some liberals consider religion, is making abortion more obviously murder every year. I imagine within the next 25 years 2nd trimester fetuses will be routinely viable. Then, 1st trimester. They will deplore science then.

  8. Annie,

Thanks for the link. I was going to use the Exodus 21:22-23 as well, but too often that just degenerates into a discussion regarding “mischief” which isn’t nearly as much fun in this context as it is in others.

  9. Nick Spinelli to John:

“John, No, they used to run this place, but good people like you and others have changed that.”

    Brimming with BS.

  10. John, No, they used to run this place, but good people like you and others have changed that. There was a despicable comment made by someone a while back about burning fetuses and flushing miscarriages down the toilet. And, I believe it was a woman who made it.
