A second American has died fighting for the terrorist organization ISIS, or Islamic State — a group that is so extreme and bloodthirsty that even Al Qaeda leaders have stood against it. The latest American to die is Abdiraaman Muhumed from Minneapolis, who notably left behind nine children to seek paradise in martyrdom as a terrorist.
Muhamed was a Somali-American who appeared to see nothing immoral in abandoning nine children to seek his own salvation by joining a Muslim army that has been beheading nonbelievers, kidnapping women, and engaging in the mass execution of unarmed men. He is believed to be one of as many as 15 Minnesota Somali-Americans who left their homes to join ISIS. They have been reportedly joined by as many as 300 other Americans and thousands of Westerners.
A week earlier, Douglas McAuthur McCain, 33, a U.S. citizen from California, died fighting for the Islamic militants and Muhamed may have died in the same battle. In addition, a U.S. citizen from Florida, Moner Mohammad Abusalha, reportedly killed himself in a suicide bombing against Syrian government troops earlier this year. Moner Mohammad Abusalha posed with a kitten before his death. I suppose to show his more gentle side when he was not blowing people up.
As a father, I was particularly struck by the willingness of Abdiraaman Muhumed to abandon his wife and children (to be supported by others or possibly the state). In addition to murdering people in the name of Islam, he also saw seeking paradise through martyrdom as perfectly moral while leaving his children to fend for themselves. It is part of the twisted morality of these Islamic extremists. By the way, the Islamic State just released another video that proudly showed it marching stripped captured Syrian soldiers into the desert and shooting them. While most of us are repulsed by images of ISIS members displaying severed heads and massacring people, some like Muhumed and Abusalha are drawn by those same images to the Islamic State.

There is a significant difference in wanting to fight for the cause of freedom, wherever the battle, and joining ISIS, which seeks to enslave and force humanity into its medieval world view. And people living in the Minneapolis area can hardly complain about lack of opportunity and direction.
There is a history in this country of fighting for freedom. Americans went to Britain before the US joined the war to help in the cause, and we did the same in Asia (Fighting Tigers and the raiders). Joining ISIS is more equivalent to joining one of the Axis powers in the run-up to WWII.
Bailers – there were some who did go to Germany or Italy or Japan prior to the breakout of war to help the Axis. And who could forget our friends in the American Bund movement who helped the Axis from this country.

Paul, we both must be psychic. You knew I’d stop by to “defend” them, and I knew you’d stop by to savage them (along with Nick, Karen S and Squeek), hence my mention of the mud.
You can see it as defending them, and I can see it as human. As someone who wanted to join the rumored militia being formed in Kuwait to fight against the Iraqi invasion, with the hope it would enable me to make my way to these US, I know what lack of opportunity and direction in life can lead someone to make very unwise and drastic choices.
Though Isis is obviously evil, what spurs some young men to join is not always black or white, good or evil, hence my caution to JT.

Oh! She was serious??? My goodness, but what you have with these terrorists is probably just the opposite. They probably have a good standard of living but feel lost in all the materialism. They are seeking a meaning and a purpose in life.

As for Mr. Muhamed, given the number of children he already had, he may have run out of local virgins and needed martyrdom to replenish his supply. Of course, his abandonment of his children is also consistent with the view that women and children are chattels.
Executing POWs may backfire on ISIS. That kind of stuff can make troops start fighting to the last man.

There are enough of us here who can indulge in that without you jumping in the mud.
Whether the military or Isis, one can join a fighting group from various reasons, and as for his family, one knows not whether he prepared enough to allow for their subsistence while he is away.

This country needs to have a serious discussion about its future.
There are portions of Islam that are incompatible with western civilization, and with the ideals of freedom, equality and opportunity that have made America great in the past. This is not to say all Muslims are like this. But the virulent strain seems to be winning the battle, so to speak. I see more and more women on the streets of Chicago wearing the head coverings and full gowns. As an American raised to respect women and believe that they are equals and have the same chances as men to succeed, this is abhorrent to me. But I also recognize that I cannot dictate to others how they dress, act, or worship if I want to be better than those I dislike.
But if this country, and Europe as well, wants to retain its identity and protect the rights of its citizens, we need to revisit the idea of tolerance. Tolerance is not a suicide pact. We can be tolerant and say women should not have to cover themselves. We can be tolerant and say that mosques where women are forced to worship in the back, or on the second floor balcony, are not acceptable. And we should be able to say that when we allow people to immigrate to this country they need to give up certain practices of the old country and be taught, and yes indoctrinated, in the practices of this country. To be perfectly blunt, it should be acceptable for us to say we don’t want people from countries or religions that would support ISIS or its believers in this country. Go back where you came from.
It’s only a matter of time until more people, immigrants or natural born, want to join this movement. We need to find the places in this country where ISIS is revered and shut them down. Mosques that preach violent hatred to this country need to be closed. We cannot accept religions of any kind that treat its followers as second class citizens. We cannot accept immigrants from countries that do not want to integrate, do not want to accept local practices and customs, and do not want to work to make THIS country a better place.
If this makes me intolerant, so be it.
