British Woman Jailed in Tehran For Trying To Enter A Soccer Stadium To Watch Iran Play Italy

Ghavami has been in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison for over 40 days after committing the unpardonable sin of try to enter a stadium to watch the Iranian national men’s team was playing Italy. She was part of a large group of women who simply wanted to be able to watch a soccer game but under Sharia law in Iran it is a crime for women to even be at a sporting match with men. The world community has gone to Facebook and other social media sites to demand her release but she continues to languish in a prison known for its torture and raping of inmates.

Ghavami was released after the arrest at the stadium but then arrested again when she went to the police station to collect her belongings a few days later. She studied law in London and has dual Iranian and British nationality.

Iranian women have been protesting for years to be allowed into stadium. They are barred even when women from other countries like Korea are allowed into the stadium.

Evin is a particularly frightful place for dissidents and civil libertarians. It has been used for journalists and human rights activists who have asserted their rights of free speech or equality.

  1. Anon,

I’m just stressing what the professor has asked of US… And it has been addressed to me numerous time. As has been stated there is no reason to engage in bad behavior just because someone is is doing the same. Just doing my part to help this blog be civil. If someone has a problem with this then they may report me, remain uncivil, become civil or find an alternative forum to be all if the above.

  2. The liberal women are avoiding this post. I think they’re intimidated by this woman’s beauty.

  3. Nick….JT might want to look into Disqus as a replacement to WordPress. You can up/down vote on each comment, reply to the exact comment, post photos, and videos too.

From a business perspective, not selling soccer tickets to women is dumb……Among other issues.

  4. What can be expected in a theocratic, misogynist, homophobic, male dominated society? Not a democratic style of governance, that’s certain. Until enough people rise up, they’ll be stuck in the dark ages.

  5. Well, it clearly is an ‘unpardonable sin’ and the US will get on it just as soon as we get those Boko Harum girls back.

  6. When is JT going to give up on WordPress??? I’ve had 2 comments eaten. This is a HORSESHIT service. I have never had a comment eaten on Blogger.

  7. david, Guilt is a part of all organized religion. I was raised Catholic. They got guilt down to a science!

    1. Nick – Catholic guilt and Jewish guilt, the cornerstones of Western Civilization. 😉

  8. Nick, her good looks were probably part of the problem here. These men perhaps felt guilty for being attracted to her. Isn’t that the reason for the hijab? They blame the woman for their own carnality. Or maybe they were doing exactly what you are suggesting here to JT about taking her case pro bono. If they arrest her, they keep her attractive looks around them longer. Poor girl. She should leave Islam.

  9. We shouldn’t be surprised when Pres. Obama’s Iran policies disappoint.

Dealing with people who hear voices that normal people can’t hear usually disappoints.

Unfortunately we will be paying the price when Pres. Obama is retired and playing golf.

  10. We had a golden opportunity to support the Green Revolution several years back. Obama is still considering his options.

  11. Wow! She is breathtakingly beautiful. So is Merriam Ibrahim. It shouldn’t matter but having knockouts like this woman gets more attention. JT should take her case pro bono!!

  12. Is the woman a British Citzen? Did she travel to Iran from Britain? Women and men from Wester countries need to vote with their feet and wallets don go to Iran or Saudi Arabia or the rest of these countries. Women are at risk as soon as they get off the plane!

  13. And I thought the new government of Iran was filled with “moderates”! The US needs to understand that theocracies are not governments with which you can negotiate. Why, because god tells them what to do, who to hate and who to oppress. How can you negotiate with that? That doesn’t mean we need to attack them or interfer in their country but it does mean that we cannot view them as individuals “who are just like us” unless of course the “us” you are talking about is a nut one of our fanatical Chritian preachers or perhaps a a member of the American Conference of Bishps, but I digress. My point is our involvement with countries in the MIDDLE east should be minimal. Promising to degrade and destroy ISIS is nuts.

  14. The people who run that country are barbarians. We need to support a shift away from oil if only for the reason we can tell the Middle East to pound sand.
