Ghoncheh Ghavami, 25, is the latest victim of Sharia law and the denial of basic rights to women in some Muslim countries. Ghavami has been in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison for over 40 days after committing the unpardonable sin of try to enter a stadium to watch the Iranian national men’s team was playing Italy. She was part of a large group of women who simply wanted to be able to watch a soccer game but under Sharia law in Iran it is a crime for women to even be at a sporting match with men. The world community has gone to Facebook and other social media sites to demand her release but she continues to languish in a prison known for its torture and raping of inmates.
Ghavami was released after the arrest at the stadium but then arrested again when she went to the police station to collect her belongings a few days later. She studied law in London and has dual Iranian and British nationality.
Iranian women have been protesting for years to be allowed into stadium. They are barred even when women from other countries like Korea are allowed into the stadium.
Evin is a particularly frightful place for dissidents and civil libertarians. It has been used for journalists and human rights activists who have asserted their rights of free speech or equality.

She is good looking. We need let her migrate to America. I will be her sponsor. Woof!
Hahah…Nick Spinelli…you’re not the first Catholic to say that about Catholic guilt. It makes me laugh every time. We Presbyterians were beaten over the head with the R word—RESPONSIBILITY– a slightly different version of guilt. Kind of like their theology…a slightly different version of Catholicism. 🙂 As for the imprisonment of a woman for attending a soccer match, since she holds dual citizenship, the Brits (and other soccer fans–we are passionate and numerous) can ask that UEFA block Iran from international matches until she’s released.
iconoclast – does Iran have a good enough team that blocking them from international competition would make a difference? I do not follow either European or American professional football.
@John She is a dual citizen- British/Iranian. That is why they wouldn’t let her in. Had she just been British, they would have let her in, apparently. Which is, yes, nuts.
BTW, you need to get over that bit of racism. You can be born in the UK and be of any kind of ethnic heritage-Iranian, Jewish (Nigella Lawson) African or Indian. “Looking British”? Even Royals date outside their race these days-get used to the new British look. I thought that the woman actually looks quite British, or maybe Lebanese. She’s gorgeous.
@Paul C. Shulte Some ignorant men have too much control. IMO. But what do I know, I’m just a girl!:)
Micelle – my mother would box your ears if she heard you say “But what do I know, I’m just a girl.’ She hated women who let men make their decisions for them. Just could not understand it.
Nah, she is a woman, she’d recognize sarcasm when she saw it:)
I bet we agree on a lot more than one thing maxcat.
@Nick Spinelli
We totally agree on one thing. Word Press MUST go! Discus or even, horrors, Facebook is better than this post-eating dragon.
When South Africa refused to allow non-whites on their sports teams, the rest of the world refused to play against them. They were effectively banned from competition. Perhaps a similar approach needs to be take here.
Sierra Rose, that is not a bad idea. They LOOOOOVE their soccer!
Being FROM there, it seems like she made a dumb decision. She knew what could happen. That place is kinda nuts!
It’s a ridiculous law and I fail to see how it is remotely an Islamicly based law. It is a law that men came up with because they are ignorant. And I am a hijabi wearing Muslima who knows the difference!
Michelle – men are ignorant or in control?
Why does that “British” woman look like an Iranian woman?
This “newspeak” is killing me.
Next thing you know, Obama will be an “American…” from Indonesia.
Yep. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan and Barrack Hussein Obama…Natural Born Americans, one and all.
Every person in the world is an American-In-Waiting.
“Can we all get along…” home?
@Rafflaw
It’s kind of like feeling sorry for somebody who puts a “Kick Me” sign on their own back, and then gets kicked. Yeah, you would hope that they don’t get kicked too hard, but how do you ignore that they put their own selves into that jeopardy.

(PS: Ignoring your Leftist obligatory dig at FOX News.)
Squeeky,
I don’t understand why it is hard to feel sorry for anyone who is jailed anywhere for trying to be equal. Sounds a little like the Fox News personalities suggesting that Rice’s wife who was beaten in the elevator should have taken the stairs.
squeeky – I am thinking there should be a stupidity defense for tourists. I am too stupid to really be allowed in your country, take pity on me. 😉
Squeeky, Meowww. Cat fight!
Well, I hope she gets out soon, but it is hard to feel sorry for her. First, she is British, so I presume she doesn ‘t have to be in Iran. Second, she knew what the law was, and “protests” don’t work the same way in Iran as they do in the UK. Maybe she can get off on an insanity plea???

Paul, LOL! There should be a Jew v Catholic Guilt Super Bowl.
Thanks for the retrieval, raff. Actually, I was pointing out how caddy women can be. I would own up to calling them ugly if that were the case, but that was not my ballbust. Men call good looking guys, “Gay.” All folks have their insecurities and they are manifested in different ways. Everyone needs to remove the sticks from their buttocks, crack open a cold “oat soda”, light up a doobie, and get in touch w/ their inner Dude. Way to uptight here lately, “Man.”
Nick – marijuana is too harsh for my lungs.
Raff,
That’s why I asked for a civility check.
The liberal women are avoiding this post? Inherent in your statements is that the liberal women who follow this site are not beautiful. Amazing.
I released two comments of Nick’s from the spam filter. I could not find the third.
