  1. To be honest when you read it there isn’t all that much legitimate content in it so you aren’t really missing anything. Just sayn’

  2. I think it is entirely unfair that the blogger has this vendetta against football. What about hockey? It only has white guys. Talk about your white privilege!

And as I remember from my trips to the Garden:

    “Potvin beats his wife.”

Let’s speak out against hockey why doncha ya?

  4. abuse of women is horrendous. abuse of animals ditto. but mike vick was allowed back into the NFL (no, he did NOT serve time for animal abuse because the laws weren’t in place.). a major disappointment. NFL hasn’t changed since then and seems to tolerate the abuse. even if the abuse is lower than the general population, the players are role models, which makes it more notable and worse, IMO.

  5. I do recall back in the 1960’s Lance Rentzel was accused of beating down a Carrot but when it was investigated it turned out he had only exposed it to an underage passerby.

  6. Where are the stories about Cornhusker Farm Boys running wild and beating down people.

Don’t offensive lineman ever commit violent crimes?

They must know a whole bunch of people named Asparagus.

There must be a cover up.

  7. I think that must be it. Normally they do not mention the race of the criminals who perform these dastardly deeds. They are usually just refereed to as “youtes.”

The author seems to have an ax grind.

  8. The author has purposefully over-represented African-Americans among the violent players here, demonstrating his white privilege caucasonormative racism.

  9. I must admit I am very surprised that the photos of the suspects were publicized. That seems unusual. Have they been convicted already?

  10. mespo,

The sad thing is that talented young student athletes are allowed to get away with/excused for all kinds of bad behavior that others kids would get punished for.

High school football player convicted of rape in notorious case is back on team: Outrage?
    http://www.pennlive.com/sports/index.ssf/2014/08/high_school_football_player_co.html

    Excerpt:
High School football scandals don’t get any bigger than the one that raged in Steubenville, Ohio, where two star players were convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl at a party in August 2012.

Now our sister website, Cleveland.com, is reporting that one of the convicted players is back on the team following his release from juvenile detention earlier this year.

Ma’lik Richmond, now 18, has returned to the roster as a wide receiver for the Big Red football team, the website reports, citing WTRF Channel 7.

  11. Mark, “It’s time to cancel not just games but the freedom of football players who think their license to commit violence extends outside of the white lines. And keep them off the playing field permanently. ”

I agree with the first sentence, but I think that those who have reformed (and I don’t know how to evaluate their reformation) should have another chance to play.

Another important point is that athletes shouldn’t be getting special treatment of the judicial system looking the other way, whether the perpetrator of violence is an athlete or any other.

  12. Well, if the racism is missing in the post, you can count on it being supplied by the right-wing commentariat here.

  13. The only thing missing is the one fact that all of these criminals share other than being football players. This fact is not spoken about for a reason.
