We previously reported the arrest of seven men arrested for their alleged participation in a gay wedding ceremony in Egypt, now a Cairo court found the seven defendants guilty of the crime of “Inciting Debauchery” for what was alleged to be their participation a gay wedding on a Nile riverboat.
The video in question, which went viral on YouTube, shows two men kissing and exchanging wedding rings along with onlookers.
While homosexuality is not illegal per se in Egypt, in recent months there have been high profile incidents of police crackdowns on gays.
Human Rights watch accuses the Egyptian authorities of arresting and in some cases torturing those suspected of homosexuality.
Defense council for the convicted men denied that they had participated in homosexual sex, claiming that medical tests had proven the men had not done so. Members of the family, rights groups, and the accused believe the court bowed to pressure from the public to impose a guilty verdict and sentence the men to prison.
The court directed that after serving their prison sentence, the defendants would be required to submit to monitoring by police.
Here is the video in question. Note: the video is loud in volume.

I hope your friend is OK. Hopefully he is just laying low.
My father said from the beginning that the Arab Spring would end badly because only the Muslim Brotherhood was organized enough to seize power. It was out of the frying pan and into the fire. It was one of the examples he gave me of the dictator we supported had done some terrible things, and yet he was the lesser of two evils when you consider who would fill the void.
I could never go into politics, because I don’t think I would be equal to having to make bargains like that. “The devil you ken” and so forth. I wish the Arab Spring had ended differently. It’s kind of like the Arab Winter of Our Discontent now.
Karen, I hope he is okay also. I am so tired of all of the hate spewed out of peoples mouths. I refuse to be upset anymore by that. It accomplishes nothing and then I am just misunderstood. I hope that the UN can affect some kind of change. I don’t care how the change comes about, just as long as the evil and hatred stops.
🙁
Yes She is correct for sure Mike Appleton. I used to talk to an internef friend who called himself Maadist when Mubarak was in power during the Arab Spring hope and he was so happy that he was toppled out. He was an atheist. Lots of Muslims were. But then the Muslim Brotherhood turned out to be bad and soon, I never heard from my friend again. I don’t know what happened to him…..:(
Karen S is correct in my view.
The people themselves who live in these countries have to want to change. It can’t come from outside. I have trouble reconciling myself with this truth, but there it is. That’s why nation building or democracy building from the outside fails. We can support a people but not impose our views on them.
But we can certainly withdraw our cash from human rights abusers.
So sad.
Egypt is becoming more extremist. Tourism was a major source of revenue for the country, but they’re throwing out that resource with both hands.

The list of things the Muslim Brotherhood Hates would be so long. If we sent a special envoy to them to promote LGBT rights, we might as well coat them in BBQ sauce and throw them in the Nile with the crocodiles to save time. It’s like trying to reason with the ISIS executioner that he really should get more in touch with his sensitive side and stop beheading people.

Although I admire your Idealism, you should realize those people do not want us over there fighting their battles for them. Do you ever speak with them on the Internet? The Muslim Brotherhood Hates the United States and is not a Benevolent Dictator.
Max-1 – I can’t agree that a bunch of ignorant, insecure guys spending their evenings together draped in lily white bed sheets are necessarily straight.
I thought raff lived in the Chicago AREA. I wonder if he “walks like an Egyptian.”
You will get this treatment of gay guys anywhere East of Corfu. Some say that Putin is bent. Does anyone know about this?
Time to leave Egypt!
Isn’t your group called NAMBLA?

… celebrates the advancement of the rights of straight white men in America.

Isn’t that group called the KKK?
You have got to be kidding – how about it if Obama celebrates the advancement of the rights of straight white men in America. Then you can worry about some minority that is less than 1% of the population.

A relatively free and open media persuaded many USers to change their mind about gays. National leaders recognize that a free media can quickly change public perceptions. Why are they so afraid of changing public perceptions?

This is what Islam is and we sure don’t what this, Sharia Law, here in America.
It’s a good start.
