Iranian Negotiators Brag How They Are Artfully Tricking Western Diplomats With A Good Cop/Bad Cop Tactic

220px-John_Kerry_official_Secretary_of_State_portraitMohammad_Javad_Zarif_2014Many cops, attorneys and others have used the classic good cop/bad cop tactic to try to force concessions or confessions. The key of course is not to admit that you are just doing good cop/bad cop. That seems to have escaped Iranian negotiators in the ongoing nuclear program talks who have been giving interviews bragging about how they are screaming at American and other diplomats in a good cop/bad cop ploy. Hmmmm. It is nothing like a man screaming like a lunatic to convince you that he and his country should have access to weapons-grade nuclear material.

Part of the tactic does not appear to be an act. This appears to be the signature style of Iran’s foreign minister and lead negotiator Javad Zarif. His shouting and screaming is so loud that security repeatedly came bursting into the room out of concern that there was a violent breakout. Western diplomats have been sitting back to allow Zarif to blow himself out in each of the tirades. In one incident, European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton assured worried security officers that it was just Zarif again and that everyone was used to it.

What really caught my eye however was that Zarif’s unprofessional outbursts were openly discussed in the Iranian press and that the Iranian team also has been discussing how they are tricking Western diplomats with the use of the good cop/bad cop tactic. No doubt, Kerry and others never heard of this tactic even though every kid watching old cop shows is well-versed in it.

Iranian diplomat Abbas Araghchi discussed how Zarif “shouted” at Kerry in a way that was likely “unprecedented” in the history of U.S. diplomacy. That appears to be a good thing and a source of pride. He then went on to brag that he and Zarif play the roles of “good cop, bad cop” to “baffle the Western diplomats” and keep them uneasy. Clever.

As if to show the triumph of Iranian diplomacy, Araghchi said that after Zarif yells at Kerry and other diplomats there is largely silence in the room except for “one or two very respectful sentences.” They appear to mistake shocked and embarrassed silence of diplomats with people are cowed by the brilliant screaming and pounding of Zarif. They will see the same reaction to people raving on the New York subway. Few people call the guy screaming about the microchip in his brain in the Penn Station “a master negotiator.” However, they may now wonder if he is an Iranian diplomat.

Are you for or against extremism? For or against Sharia Law? For or against violence in the name of Islam? For or against the destruction of Israel? Do you believe that any criticism of extremist Islam is anti-Islam or wrong in some way?
Do you believe that non-Muslims have to right to complain about what extremists are doing? Do you feel that Muslims like Ayaan Ali have no right to complain because that is unIslamic or makes her an apostate? Do you support attempts to silence Ms Ali?

I have clearly stated that I support moderate Islam, but adamantly oppose extremism. You argue with me each and every time. I have supported Ms Ali’s right to tell her story and you’ve argued with me about her, too.

So you argue against my comments that are specifically against extremism.

Please explain. You have said you are a moderate, and yet your actions about my legitimate complaints do not then make sense.

For example, I was raised Catholic. When the pedophile priest scandal broke, I was loudly outraged and complained. That did not make me anti-Christian or anti-Catholic; it made me right.

  2. Po:

The centrifuges were for enriching uranium to the levels used to make a nuclear bomb. Peaceful nuclear energy does not need those levels.

I take the actions of the UAE with a grain of salt. If they designate CAIR a terrorist organization, I’m not going to ignore. Who would do that? A reasonable person would investigate.

I do not hate Islam. I dislike extremist Islam.

Do you like when extremists chop people’s heads off in the name of the faith? Because if you do not, then you, like me, dislike extremism.

And apparently you are unaware that it is well documented that Hamas uses human shields. They hide weapons at UN schools who employ Hamas teachers. They use ambulances to transport terrorists and bombs.

I believe you are uninformed and unwilling to look at the actual facts.

  3. He musta been hoping that witnessing the spiritual power of the Hajj would do it, as it has for others. But Saudi Arabia requires visas and they do not give them to non-Muslims (unless you are highly connected that is)

  4. Teji:

Why can certain countries have nuclear weapons and no one else?

Well, in general, Muslim extremists keep blowing themselves up in suicide bomb attacks. What, honestly, do you think they would do if they had a nuclear bomb? The threat of nuclear retaliation destroying their own country prevents anyone from using a nuclear weapon against a similarly armed country. But if you’re a suicide bomber, who cares?

Secondly, the leaders of Iran routinely promise the destruction of Israel and the West. So only the greatest fools would believe that they would refrain from using nuclear weapons.

And, you’re right, it’s irresponsible to allow student visas to students from threat nations to study nuclear physics.

Our having nukes prevents countries with a sense of self preservation from bombing us. For those that lack a basic sense of responsibility for their own citizens, at least we have the capability to destroy our attackers. It’s a grim prospect I hope never rises.

    1. Karen: If I were you, I would read my whole post again. Pakistan is a Muslim country that has Nuclear weapons. Enough said.

  5. By the way, karen, as I have said before. You cannot do the hajj because you are not muslim. You must apply for a visa in order to make the hajj.

    Hi Po:

I guess you didn’t hear Rouhani’s promise that no matter what, the centrifuges will never stop working to enrich uranium.
    ——-
    Hi Karen
    Here we go again.
Rouhani said the nuclear program is for peaceful and energy production, how do you derives a different meaning from what he said? And please answer.

Or all the rhetoric about obliterating Israel. Or the way they open elementary schools in Iran chanting “Death to America.”
    ————-
What about the rhetoric from Israel about destroying Iran? Where is your outrage in that? What about our rhetoric about bombing Iran, and calling it an axis of evil? Where is your outrage in that? Gander/goose…

Yep. They’re a really peaceful, social nation towards the West and Israel.
    ?????????????????????????????????
Please stay on topic and let’s address specific issues. Who claimed such? Again, Iran is expected to be social and peaceful towards the West and Israel when neither is civil and peaceful towards it? What is your response to my claims that Israel murdered many Iranian scientists, and along with the US has been hacking Iran, and is still trying to torpedo the ongoing US and European negotiations with Iran? Please answer those.
How do you answer my claim that the US has been trying for years to foment a revolution in Iran by arming and funding a group that we, ourselves deem a terrorist organization? Please answer.

Apparently you were unaware that the UAE named CAIR and its associate the Muslim Brotherhood, a terrorist organization.
    ——————————
Since when do you value the action of the UAE? I don’t, and most people around the world do not. CAIR is an upstanding organization that seeks to protect the rights of Muslims in the US. All the claims that it supports terrorism are directly linked to the Jewish Defense League, WHICH is a terrorist organization. http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-report/browse-all-issues/2002/spring/anti-arab-terrorism
Some Cair leaders may have links with the Muslims brotherhood, and that is not a crime so far, The MB is NOT a terrorist organization that I know.

I originally viewed CAIR as simply a voice for moderate Muslims in America.
But I was disturbed when I watched an interview with Ayaan Ali, who made the film Honor Diaries, and wrote several books. She had undergone female genital mutilation as a girl, and escaped an arranged marriage.
CAIR has attacked her, tried to prevent her movie from being shown, and pressured a university to withdraw honoring her.
I believe that women have a right to speak their minds. As someone who was mutilated as a child, she is qualified to speak about the plight of women in the ME.
    ———————–
We have gone through that spot already. Ayaan is not a muslim, the movie she contributed to, the books she wrote, the leactures she held, the ideas she offers, all of them say the same thing, that Islam is systematically and irremediably violent and evil, and that it should be attacked and destroyed because it is a dangerous religion. Even Sam Harris and Bill Maher aren’t as extremist in their hatred of Islam. You dno not make your case by quoting the most virulent extremist in the debate about Islam.
Cair’s job is to protect the interests of Muslim, just as the these many Jewish organizations we have attack everyone who says anything about Jews or Israel. Where is your outrage?
    _________________________________________
If CAIR really opposes female genital mutilation, and the subjugation of women, as they say, then they should support Ms Ali.
    ————————
Really? Come on, Karen, show some intellectual honesty here! Ali says Islam is bad, and you want Cair to demonstrate its anti- subjugation of women and genital mutilation by supporting Ali? By agreeing with her that Islam is bad? When Cair is saying that genital mutilation and female subjugation is anti islam? Genital mutilation has nothing to do with Islam, it is a cultural practice. Some of the countries most guilty of it aren’t even muslim countries!

And, no, I do not “see terrorists everywhere.” I differentiate moderate/modern Muslims from the extremist crazies who have taken control of the region.

I speak maybe a dozen phrases in Arabic, a bit more in Farsi, studied some Turkish, Persian, and Arabic dance, and spent years immersed in Arabic culture. I’ve dated a Turk, a Persian, an Afghani, and a Lebanese Armenian. I was invited more than once to go on Haj, but never went.
    ——————–
You apparently like Arabic culture, but obviously still hate Islam. You keep differentiating between the moderates/modern and the crazies, taking a group of 2 billion and breaking them in two, according to your own fears and Islamophobia. There are only 2 types of us, apparently, the modern/moderate who suit your taste and the crazies who are, oh, so dangerous.

If you refuse to be blind to extremism, then see the extremism of Israel when members of the Knesset call for the massacring of Palestinians, of rabbis here and there calling too for the massacre of Palestinians and the rape of their women, see the bombing of 4 hospitals in Gaza, including a children’s hospital. see the bombing of 4 boys playing soccer on the beach, see the blowing up of civilians and the ambulances coming to their rescue. See the settlers who come to a village, protected by the Israeli army, take over home and land, uproot the trees, shoot some young people, lock up others. See that in Israel, if you are not Jewish, your marriage is not recognized by the state. See that for every “terrorist” act you blame Palestinians for, Israelis have done 10 you refused to see. See the orthodox jews who are driving Israel social and political policies that demand all the land, and subjugate their own women, who are not allowed to pray at the wall.
See, see the US government your government invading countries and destroying them at the tunes of thousands of pounds of bombs. See Falluja, where every newborn is disformed and misshapen, thanks to the US army weaponry and its use of depleted uranium, against rules of war. See the hundred of thousands of dead Iraqis thanks to your government, the chaotic environment it created and the vacuum in which sprung up ISIS.
If you are gonna see one, see all, for otherwise, friend, you are being hypocritical.

  7. The fact is that the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty is dead, too many nations already possess nukes and I see no likelyhood of them ever giving them up and unacceptable climate change is already locked in, land areas that are currently liveable will cease to be livable, land areas currently useless will become valuable, there will be mass migrations ignoring borders, those nations without nukes will be at a disadvantage.

If I were running Iran my priority would be to get the hydrogen bomb as quickly as possible as Iran is already under threat of Israel’s 200 to 400 nukes.

  8. I would like to ask a question or two to all here who are against Iran having Nuclear Energy/bomb.

1.How can you stop someone from gaining knowledge?
2.Is trying to put stop to learning the American way?

India and Pakistan got the bombs on their own and they did not care when the US put sanctions on them, Now US is bribing Pakistan and is trying to sell Nuclear technology to India.

This is a self defeating prophecy. We get thousands of dollars from the Iranian students to study Nuclear science in this country and then send them home, hoping for what?

Why can Israel have nuclear bombs in that region and no one else?

If all had the bombs in the Middle East, then there might be a solution for peace on level playing fields. Sunnis, Shias and all.

I am all for it because knowledge can never be stopped. Learning is a human trait.

  9. I originally viewed CAIR as simply a voice for moderate Muslims in America.

  10. Nick – I should tell you about some of the great stories about my dad negotiating with the ME and Russia.

Wish I could have been a fly on the wall. . .

  11. And, no, I do not “see terrorists everywhere.” I differentiate moderate/modern Muslims from the extremist crazies who have taken control of the region. No Muslim I was ever friends with would want Sharia Law, or a return to the ME. In fact, when one girl I knew went to Iran to visit relatives, she was arrested for wearing nail polish, and for being in a car with her cousin, whose last name differed from her own. Her father had to bribe a judge with a house to get her out and bring her home.

Although I love many aspects of the culture, I’m not going to refuse to see extremism when it happens, or ignore the daily terrorist attacks going on in Israel. Family oriented, moderate Islam, as it’s often practiced here in America, is a beautiful culture. I love how multi generations are at all the parties, dancing together. And I adore the music. On the other hand, the human rights abuses of Sharia Law in every single country where it is practiced exclusively are well documented and undeniable. In countries like Great Britain, where Sharia Law is only used voluntarily in family courts, it is not as bad. There, SL guides aspects such as inheritance, where a girl gets less than a boy, and an adopted child gets nothing. Not my preference, but people are free to divide their money how they choose. But it’s not yet infiltrated the criminal system, so no stonings or amputations yet. Sometimes I think Muslims feel disloyal or uncomfortable criticizing their fellow Muslims when they chop people’s heads off in the name of the faith, but I have no such restriction.

Why don’t you take it up with the Sheiks?

I’ve seen interviews with CAIR, and they’ve fared badly when asked about current and former officials funding Hamas and other terrorist organizations. They condemn terrorism through one side of their mouth, but fund it with the other.

  15. I hope Israel has a plan. And executes it when necessary. We don’t have a Harry Truman looking at the big picture. I wonder if Obama has a “red line” a real one. But doubt it and I feel cold inside.

  16. Whenever some witness, client, etc. starts screaming @ me on the phone I simply hang up. When they do it in person, I calmly walk out of the room. NEVER allow someone to scream @ you.
