Who Scalped Whom?
Historians Suggest Indians Were As Much Victims As Perpetrators
By Diane E. Foulds
http://www.hawthorneinsalem.org/ScholarsForum/MMD2263.html
Excerpt:
BOSCAWEN, N.H. – As monuments go, the one depicting Colonial heroine Hannah Dustin looks like any other, with one crucial exception: In her left hand she holds a fistful of human scalps.
The inscription underneath tells of her 1697 capture in an Indian raid, and how she slew her captors as they slept – 10 women and children. Later she returned for their scalps, having remembered they could fetch a bounty.
The idea of a settler scalping Indians might seem like a historical quirk. Most Americans assume that if there was any scalping going on in Colonial times, the Indians were doing it, not the English.
But the truth, it turns out, is more complex. In an era where Indian-nicknamed teams are under fire and even the meaning of Thanksgiving is being re-evaluated by Native Americans, the very word “scalp” has become culturally loaded – and the origins of the practice increasingly controversial. If one thing is certain, however, it’s that Hannah Dustin was no fluke. ”
Americans certainly scalped Indians during the Revolution and after,” says Colin Calloway, who teaches history at Dartmouth College. “They also stripped Indian corpses of skin.”
New England is littered with evidence if you know where to look. Some 35 miles north of the Hannah Dustin statue, at New Hampshire’s Rumney rest area off Route 25, a discreet historic marker reading “Baker River” tells of Lieutenant Thomas Baker and his scouting party, whose 1712 razing of a nearby Pemigewasset Indian village earned a “scalp bounty” of 40 pounds sterling from Massachusetts Colonial authorities. The deed earned Baker a promotion to captain – and a namesake river.
Oh! And don’t forget he was happily married for 147 years, that makes him really perfect. It always tickles me whn he brings up how long he was married. He uses it as a dig to those of us who have been divorced. What a piece of work is right.
Inga –
I came in just now and saw comments starting at 3:40pm and they were about Jesus and some thinking they were the second coming and all and you said something about him being married for 147 years? Is there really a wild claim out there like that not that I wouldn’t doubt it?
rafflaw and mespo,
Some people think they’re the “second coming.”
😉
raf:
The only truly perfect guy got crucified (if you believe the story). There’s a moral there somewhere and it isn’t to claim to be perfect.
Mark
Those that think they are perfect are especially disturbing to those of us who are perfect. I think that is the definition of “homo perfecticus madisonius!
nick:
“Yes, I have bias, but I can put that aside for the most part.”
****************
Previously enlightening us that you are blessed with “perfect” disposition as you called it, you now tell us that you are fully self-aware of both personal strengths and weaknesses and can overcome those weaknesses albeit imperfectly. Done everything, traveled everywhere, know everybody worth knowing and now have completely objective insight into all of your vast experiences, Gosh! It must be the dawn of a new more perfect species of man, homo perfecticus madisonius. And who knew it happened just 60 odd years ago? “Black people” must take plenty of comfort from your “love” for them even as you blame them for the “depravity and squalor” they live in. You are a piece of work.
davidm:
If you really want to know instead of just being the boy who cries “why” all the time, there a many scholarly articles on the topic that answer all of your questions. While blacks do disproportionately commit more violent crime, that is not to say that the reason is the race of the perpetrators. Indeed, perpetrators have many similar characteristics aside from race — being male for one. Do we say gender makes people more likely to commit crime and punish for that? Youth or young adulthood is another common factor, do we punish for that?
Suffice to say most contend that social isolation, deprivation, and lack of family support contributes to crime and all are symptomatic of poverty not the race of the person. An American at the turn of the Century would have heard all the racist buzzwords being heaped now on African-Americans then being heaped on poverty-stricken Irish immigrants. Did their nationality make them more predisposed to crime?
Mespo wrote: “While blacks do disproportionately commit more violent crime, that is not to say that the reason is the race of the perpetrators.”
So you admit that they do commit more crimes. Why then imply that the reason there are more blacks in prison is because evil whitey has designed a system that puts them there to satisfy their racist hatred?
Mespo wrote: “Do we say gender makes people more likely to commit crime and punish for that?”
We don’t punish them for being male, but we would be wise to take notice of the fact that being male makes them more likely to commit violent crimes. In like manner, being a black male makes them more likely to commit violent crimes. Rather than ignoring that connection, we should work that much harder to help them overcome that difficulty.
Mespo wrote: “Suffice to say most contend that social isolation, deprivation, and lack of family support contributes to crime and all are symptomatic of poverty not the race of the person.”
Why are you so protective of race? Race is a factor in culture, which in turn is a factor in work ethics, family support, and social ethics, which in turn affects economic conditions and social status. You treat race as some kind of holy sacred grail to be worshipped. I suspect you treat poverty in the same way.
The truth is that race can be a positive or a negative force in a person’s life. Whatever it is, whether positive or negative, the person will have to deal with it and work to overcome or use it to his advantage. Poverty is generally a bad thing. We should not coddle or worship the poor, but rather teach them to overcome and rise above it. Once they are successful and no longer poor, they will be able to help others also escape poverty.
It seems Mr. Schulte would defend fat man and little boy on the grounds that they were “humanitarian” bombs; since they came from “our” people.
po, There is love, joy, culture, and good people in the inner city. There is also much despair hopelessness, depravity and evil people. I have lived and worked in these neighborhoods. I have said here previously, I love black people. As Spike Lee points out, Italians and black people are very much alike. I can tell when people are talking out of their asses when discussing the inner city and black people. And, I do NOT include you, if you catch my drift. Aridog is the real deal. I think you know that. I point out the good and the bad. Too many people choose to see only the good or the bad. I can’t do that w/ anything. My profession taught me to see things as they are. Yes, I have bias, but I can put that aside for the most part.
Mespo727272
That was then and this is now.
Why is it that the Native Americans are fighting to keep their Nations together and taking what they do have off the Nation and building Casinos and making money and not whining like this?
Most of us have seen this you know. Go ahead and feel for the thugs – feed the thugs – they hate you too you know. They especially hate themselves
Mespo727272
Are you having cognitive dissonance regarding the plight of the inner city poor people again?
Certainly I don’t think all African Americans are stupid. I am all about cultural relativism. I stayed in Ferguson for 55 years and came to SE Missouri for my Husband’s care. I walked out of my Church last Wednesday because of a comment made about black spirituals – “sam wants to know:
am I racist against whites or blacks, he couldn’t tell from my retelling of the event it’s too black for white people to sing that don’t sing well – it would be an insult to that church”
I have this farther up the thread. I know that you think Religion is stupid and, maybe it is. But I will miss the Church if they don’t straighten out their innards.
Just like last time. When challenged, you run away like a little frightened child. But, it is prudent for you to sleep it off. I will acknowledge that.
People who live in little boxes are incredulous of my life. I am able to be prove it all.. Pick something you doubt, put up 1k, and then we’ll talk. We have been through this before and you disappeared when challenged. I’ve run into little people like you before. Put up or shut up.
Also, happy, what are the parallels between the Native Americans and the Blacks?
Are you dismissing the fact that the genocide of Native Americans and the taking away of their land had a direct effect on those communities and can explain the abject poverty that characterizes them?
Are you dismissing the idea that the legacy of slavery, systemic oppression and discrimination had a great effect on black americans? And that effect was negative and can be traced to today?
Also, what did Holder say about race that makes you so outraged?
What did I say to make me Holder?
Okay Po
Amerian Natives –
Here is a purely progressive take – you obviously can’t handle someone looking on both sides of an issue so here is the progressive take
These sovereign nations have come to understand, that geography is all too often destiny.
For most tribes, their remotely placed homes and communities frequently stifle viable economic activity. This disturbing result is particularly harsh when we recognize that Native Americans witnessed their geography chosen for them by those who sought to terminate them as a people.
A major cause of poverty in Native American communities is the persistent lack of opportunity. The Economic Research Service reports that Native American communities have fewer full-time employed individuals than any other high-poverty community. Only 36 percent of males in high-poverty Native American communities have full-time, year-round employment.
On the Blackfoot Reservation in Montana, for example, the annual unemployment rate is 69 percent. The national unemployment rate at the very peak of the Great Depression was around 25 percent. That means that each year the Blackfeet people, whose aboriginal lands once comprised Glacier National Park, suffers an employment crisis nearly three times as severe as the Great Depression.

Okay Po, this is my answer to that – leave the reservation….. I am 1/16 Blackfoot Indian. So I don’t really want to hear about it. And I have suffered many indignities. So what??? It’s like, get over it and move on and get a life.
My Husband had a stroke at 54 and he is a Vietnam Vet and was a Navy SEAL Oh boo hoo my life and his is over. Nope, God is good and he is using my husbands body as a different vessel than we thought it was going to be used in the Veteran’s home.
I complimented y.ou and you critcized me lolol oh well. You sound like Holder because of those 3 Jim Crow Laws. Just Like him in Ferguson. He is using people. He is a criminal. He was part of the Weatheman in the 1960s and how he got to be in the Government is beyond me.
Those people have been caught with firearms now according to the tapes in that store they broke into in Ferguson the Ferguson Market
You forget I grew up there and so did BarkinDog who is usually so Liberal but he wants to hand those thugs. I do too.
I am saying that strong Black People and Natives GET OVER IT and OVERCOME IT they do songs like We shall Overcome and Breaking Through the Chains.
They do NOT cling to the past.
I KNOW
Preciate you think so highly of me
lol
Po
I did some digging because I wanted to see what this woman was writing.
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&ved=0CDAQFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kropfpolisci.com%2Fracial.justice.alexander.pdf&ei=dRfPVIW5MJbLsATH24GQDw&usg=AFQjCNHsBHkBnfS1lVWDZLZd4NrNnfVZ2g&sig2=fViHYfByOe2gjA2XuZUbtw&bvm=bv.85076809,d.cWc
This is the PDF I skimmed through. I did not read it slowly but I think I got what her drift was. Po, it is my belief she is telling a story to flavor the Democrats as always being friendly to the Black People and nothing could be further from the truth. Look up George Wallace.
I applaud you for studying though.
I really don’t want you to think I don’t have any compassion. I just have a wild streak and I pull peoples legs and they don’t know how to take me.
Oh well lol
😉
Here is a PBS portal that is like an encyclopedia
1896 Speech from Tom Watson
this race antagonism perpetuates a monetary system that beggars you both. The colored tenant is in the same boat as the white tenant, the colored laborer with the white laborer and that the accident of color can make no difference in the interests of farmers, croppers and laborers.”
Using fraud and violence, and rallying support by appealing to white supremacy, the Democrats held on to their power in Georgia and other Southern states. Many Democrats refused to endanger white supremacy by voting against the Democratic Party. In 1896 the Populists fused into the Democratic Party. With the defeat of Democratic presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan and with the Democrats successfully launching white unity campaigns in the South, the Populists gradually disappeared as a political force.

po – are you aware that Indians were killing off whites and taking their lands. Capturing their wifes and children to enslave them or make them members of the tribe, which is also a genocidal technique?
Good night, Nicky. That’ll give you more time to complete your memoirs.
“Conservative.” Are conservatives anti death penalty, pro drug legalization? I voted for Obama in 2008. I gave the criminal money! I’ve said all this here many times. Sober the hell up! I am not a liberal cult member like you, but I can assure you the conservatives and Republicans don’t want me. You have to put people into little boxes because you’ve lived your entire life in one, it’s called Virginia, where your were called “Eyetalian” The self loathing oozes from you. I have known Italian, black, Hispanic, Polish guys who grew up where there were few of their culture. The self loathing is palpable.
Nick:
Was that before or after you solved the Lindberg baby crime and saved the Pope from assassination? I always get that confused. The movie didn’t make that clear. I did like Brad Pitt portraying you though.
Nobody on earth could have done all the things you claim to have done or been everywhere you claim. But carry on Walter, I love good fiction or comedy.
Happy, don’t know what happened recently but you are going down rather precipitously. What you’ve said today alone goes against everything you have said before.
It’s getting harder and harder to give you the benefit of the doubt.
Nick, I’d rather you not use the word depravity…it has a moral component that doesn’t befit the friendship and appreciation you extend to those black communities.
And watch out lest you sound like the white god amidst the lesser blacks.
mespo, You have lived your entire life in one state. I have lived in 7 states in 3 time zones. I was a Vista volunteer living in poverty in the inner city of KC.
Nick:
My clients include lots if inner city ethnic folks who would love to teach you what a great bunch of guys you conservatives are. I’d like to audit that class.
Nick:
Wow, a few weekends in the South! You’re a real expert there, Mr. Mitty.
