Trump Pledges To Defend Article XII

245px-Donald_Trump_by_Gage_Skidmore495px-Constitution_of_the_United_States,_page_1Donald Trump has been widely criticized for what is seen as a shaky knowledge or fealty to the Constitution. Recently, however, he seemed to pledge support not just the Constitution but beyond — pleading to defend “Article XII” which is two articles too many for the Constitution.

A Washington Post article quotes members of Congress as saying that Trump told them “I want to protect Article I, Article II, Article XII.”

Of course, Trump may have made a common error in referring to “articles” when he meant “amendments.” However, the Twelfth Amendment concerns the procedure for electing the President and Vice President. Not exactly a rallying cry for presidential candidates or their voting bases. Indeed, if he intended to say the Twelfth Amendment I would be concerned as someone who has been a long critic of the electoral college.

It is never good for a presidential candidate to flub a constitutional question, but given the scathing speech of Khizr Khan on Trump’s knowledge (or lack thereof) of the Constitution, this type of error magnifies the criticism of his actual knowledge of the constitutional and legal rules.

  1. When it comes to those that believe in The Card (aka the Trump card), you must remember to “Stop Making Sense”. They do not care about this type of stupidity, because they believe his stupidity is better than any other form. Truly, you can not expect them to see much of a down side. (Think of the Preacher that gets caught messing around, sexually, with a parishioner, but requests more donations in order to fund his counseling.

  2. It’s precious to see the liberals on this blog being thrown a bone by JT. It’s one thing for people to “think” he is a progressive, but there he goes again opening his mouth and removing all doubt.

  3. Funny. Mocking Obama for saying 57 states one time to defend Trump’s repeated blunders is priceless, since Trump shows the same intellectual capacity as Obama otherwise…. Just listen to Trump discuss international policy with himself or use bigly words to describe the size of his hands and penis. Like Trump has discovered, he could shoot someone (anyone) on 5th Ave and not lose one supporter. In fact they would be more rabid for his victory. Now we can all sit back and watch him mock a Gold Star mother and the next disabled journalist to cross his path…

    1. Lloyd – they attacked him. Do you think they get a pass because of their status?

  4. Now he claims that he sacrificed more. Trump appears to be a narcissist and some say that he is a psychotic one. I am not a mental health professional so I don’t know. A normal person would apologize and try to move on but he has not. Narcissists don’t apologize from what I have read. At best he is extremely immature emotionally.

    1. swm – what do you call Hillary who went after all those women that Bill slept with, including the ones he raped. What kind of personality is that?

  5. Although Obama taught Constitutional Law he seems not to know much about the Constitution. He does know their are 57 states.

  6. I think Trump’s attack on the Muslim family pretty much guarantees that Trump will not expand his base beyond his anti-Muslim core.

    1. “I think Trump’s attack on the Muslim family pretty much guarantees that Trump will not expand his base beyond his anti-Muslim core.”

Can you imagine anyone attacking a mother who gave her son in combat defending this nation?

What kind of person does that?

  7. Mr. Trump attacked the wrong Muslim family, and Mr.Khan is certainly correct about Trump’s lack of knowledge of the constitution.

  8. This Trumpster is not so dumb as he is dorky. He sort of reminds me of the midget who runs N. Korea.

  9. Well, Mr. Trump’s error is something I could readily accept if he was meaning the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. (Something many governments seem to ignore)

Article I Innate Freedom and Equality

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

    Article II Ban on Discrimination

Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.

    Article XII Right to Privacy

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks

  10. Mere Trump change. If he was Hillary, there would not have been any $500,000 or $2.35 million – it would have been deleted or shredded already.

  11. @squeek

anyway we can get TI (Transparency International) to monitor the general?

  12. “Silly people! Article XII is what governs states 51-57! My goodness, but you guys are supposed to be lawyers!”

Some of us are just relieved he can count that high.

  13. peltonrandy, perhaps those articles are where Obama’s unlawful Executve Orders are where Congress must tear them up or put forward a motion for the changes.

  14. Rather odd that he would single out only those articles for protection. Isn’t it the duty of the President to “preserve, protect and defend” all the articles of the Constitution? Of course the oath the president swears says that he or she will do so “to the best of my ability.” Given Trump’s incredible lack of qualifications to be President, his abilities may very well not be up to the task.

  15. I guess if Trump is pledging to uphold the Constitution, we shouldn’t let ourselves get hung up on the petty details.
