The Demonic Dab: Saudi Arabia Arrests Artist For Dabbing In Public

screen-shot-2017-08-09-at-4-03-58-pm-700xSaudi Arabia is once again in the news with another example of the extremist religious dogma that characterizes its Wahhabi traditions.  The latest lunacy came with the arrest of TV host, actor, and aspiring artist, Abdallah Al Shaharani, who committed an unIslamic and shocking act.  He dabbed. That’s right.  He did a dab during a musical contest. WARNING: THE VIDEOTAPE BELOW SHOW A DISTURBING DAB.

The Kingdom has banned the dab as a corrupting Western move and a symbol of the drug culture.  As is often the case, the suspect was immediately displayed confessing to his sins and regrets.  Al Sharanani issued a pleading apology to everyone:

“I apologize to our respected government and to my audience for unintentionally and spontaneously making the dance move at Taif festival. Please accept my apology…”

Another victory for the Saudi Sharia legal system.

  1. When used as a noun, the dab is a hip-hop dance move. When used as a verb, dap or dab means implementing a type of handshake or fist bump. So a dapper is one who fist bumps, but I am dapper when I dress in my best suit. If I do not dap correctly with a rapper, that makes me a poor dapper. Thus, the rapper might give me a bum rap. It is all so confusing and makes it difficult to have a good command of the English language.

  2. Did you mean dapping? or dab as with a paint brush. Dapping which started during Vietnam days is popular the world over now and even has medical preventive medicine approval as like not blowing out the candles on a cake greatley reduces the spread of germ as opposed to the old hand shake.
The hand shake though was a more sincere sign as each gave up control of their major fighting hand. So what’s next buttons on the other side for men? the button placement came from not impeding drawing a weapon.

Ah well but dabbing is a form I believe of some kind of art experiecne where the object is to deface private and pubic property.

Such actions inariably lead to discussions such as one today on MAD or Mutally Assured Discussion…hmmmmm…make that Destruction. Doesn’t work when the other side doesn’t care such as the Islamics regions and where ever they spread, or pschopaths like the North Koreans. whose diplomacy and so forth discussions are right out of the Middle East.

Maybe we should try Unilateral Assured Destruction. Cut to the the chase, one good demonstration and keep the Lawyers and the State Department out of it. .

  3. He was arrested for that?

This neurotic obsession with controlling people at every level will either make the population insane or rebellious. What a terrible way to live. THIS is why conservatives do not want to hand over too much control to the government. We do not want blasphemy laws, hate speech laws, or the criminalization of opposing thought, because the government will politically decide what is “good” and what is “bad”. If you give absolute control to the government, don’t complain when you create a dictatorship.

Another aspect of Wahhabism is its absolute rejection of archeological or historic significance of ancient structures. Case in point is Mecca. They are renovating Mecca with absolutely no care or interest in preserving any of the original structures. If they won’t preserve even Mecca’s artifacts, they won’t take care of any other internationally significant archeological sites in any region they control. So glad that Egypt didn’t follow Wahhabism.

  4. Hmm. My kids just taught me how to dab. We took a family picture at the beach, everyone striking a dab pose. It was fun. Who knew it was a problem? Thanks Saudi religious police for letting us know that it’s the move of SATAN!!!!

    1. So you really did mean dapping. well surprise surprise you are not guilty of cultural misappropriation. Can’t win for losing. Doesn’t the new generatin have anything original to call it’s own? Besides Katy Perry and the Clone-ettes?

  5. The House of Saud is absolutely correct. Western influence is corrupting. Before the fall of the Soviet Union, there was a Finnish documentary called “To Moscow with Rock”. Each of the bands had an official minder who translated what the band members were saying, however the documentary subtitled what the band was actually saying. The difference was night and day. I knew then that blue jeans and rock and roll and corrupted the Soviet Union and it was not long for this world.

BTW, the best band was from Siberia, but they were all good.

Nick – I had to look up dab, too. 🙂

  6. If you want to be a muslim, you just have to pay attention. There are rules and restrictions. However, if you make it to heaven, you get 50 virgins; virgin what? That depends on if you have dabbed or dobbed or dubbed, but chopping off heads and bu**ering little boys, that’s OK. The big M set that up.

      1. Well, that sounds unpleasant for the virgins. For Pete’s sake, women aren’t allowed to enjoy themselves under Islam even in heaven?

  7. Well at least he had a warning that this dance move was illegal. And, given the backstory of the move, it seems the Saudi clerics do their homework. Lol!

  8. I had to Google “dabbing.” Don’t care enough to watch a video to see it. I am becoming clueless to modern culture and damn proud of it.

  9. Well, here’s something folks from across the political spectrum can agree on. Dabbing is just plain stupid and makes one look like a June Taylor reject. Banning it from the planet will have not one adverse effect and the salutary ones are too numerous to catalog.

  10. I thought Arab folk dancing was the basis for calligraphy and Arabic script. If so, then the reputed iconoclasm of Islam ought properly to allow this so-called “dab,” unless it’s prohibited as an odd sort of neologism that somehow fails to shatter any graven image. Curious.

  11. Religion is the opiate of the people. That is my mantra. Those who preach can’t teach and can not even teach teachers. Turn on television on Sunday morning and watch all those dorks preaching their gospel. ItShay on the ouYay. Their way or the highway.

    1. Oh. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

Praise the Lard on Sunday and Crisco on Monday.

    2. FP:
I tend to agree but as long as you have pathological religions as evidenced here, you’ll need more or less benevolent ones to give these spiritual addicts an alternative.

      1. FFS – I like nom de web, however I think nom de plume is still correct. 🙂

  12. I had never heard of the word dab either, but I always thought the modern artists were doing a overt gesture from a old Hollywood movie.

It reminds me of our presidential campaign when President Trump waved to his large stadium audiences and the left every month would have melt downs saying he was giving the nazi salute. 🙄

    1. Lean a bit and shove your face into your elbow. That’s it. It’s s’posed to look like you just inhaled marijuana concentrate (called dab) and are trying to hold it in your lungs while choking.

      1. More insidious drug culture masquerading as pop culture. And we have an opioid crisis? Imagine that. See my comment about dabbing, Supra.

  13. You’ll know you’re living under Sharia Law if suddenly all the kids around you can not dab, whip or nae nae. Sound nice, doesn’t it?

  14. Stupidity and ignorance are not proscribed in Saudi Arabia. They are required of every Muslim.

    1. You mean they really are the same as that crowd that hangs our at 430 South Capitol St SE, Washington, D.C. 20003? The ones where the whitebreads try act surprised when they find out soul food does not include ocean fish?
