NYT: Trump Ordered Mueller To Be Fired In June But White House Counsel Refused To Carry Out Order

donald_trump_president-elect_portrait_croppedThe New York Times has posted a blockbuster story that President Donald Trump ordered that Special Counsel Robert Mueller be fired last June but White House Counsel Donald F. McGahn II prevented the order from being carried out by threatening to resign.  If true, it is a chilling disclosure that such a clearly self-defeating and unwarranted act was not just considered but ordered.  The firing would have magnified calls for possible impeachment and would have led Congress to move on such options as the renewal of the Independent Counsel Act.  While I have written extensively (here and here and here) on Mueller’s conflicts of interest and why he should never have been considered for such a post, I have also stressed that any firing of Mueller would be an act of utter lunacy in the midst of this investigation.

Trump reportedly identified three conflicts of interest for Mueller stemming from (1)  a dispute over fees at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va. involving Mueller; (2) Mueller’s work for the law firm that previously represented the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner; and (3) the fact (that I have previously written about) that Mueller interviewed for Comey’s job after Comey was fired by Trump.

Again, I happen to agree that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein made a mistake in selecting Mueller. However, that does not mean that a firing of Mueller is warranted or wise. It is not.  Moreover, I expect Rosenstein would have also resigned rather than carry out such an order.

If this account is true, Trump was saved from committing a lethal self-inflicted wound by his counsel throwing himself in the path of the president.

  1. NYT is the kiss of death for anything. NYT automatically means don’t trust this we lie for a living.

  2. any verifiable credible sources or just the anonymous nyt?
If that’s all you got it wasn’t worth reading past wordl three might as well of quoted baconovich. or one of the other robo clowns

  3. I don’t agree with conflicts of interest you noted. Those don’t seem significant for a man of Mueller’s reputation.

    1. bleigh, you seem to “think” that Mueller has a good reputation. That merely shows that you know nothing about Mueller. Look up Mueller, 911, Coleen Rowley, and Sibel Edmunds if you want to get a sense of just what a traitor Mueller really is for his direct role in obstructing dedicated FBI agents from investigating leads from red flags that would later turn out to reveal the plans for the 911 crimes. Or, if you want to stay anti-Trump and pro-Mueller, avoid all facts and evidence, which you’re probably an expert in anyway.

    2. mine tell us what you are talking about. what would seem significant? To a prog sec socialist? NOTHING.

    1. Yes, indeed, DB. Jayson Blair is very proud of his pals at the NYT, particularly with their great attention to maintaining the accuracy of the details of their reporting, and for keeping up the great tradition that he practiced at the NYT.

    2. Not unless here is a credible source and the NYTimes get real. and so what if he was thinking about it or wanted to?/ Muehler obvious lied at his confirmationhearings let him hange

  4. The NYT has uncovered the truth! They have learned from the second cousin of a janitor working in the White House, a White House waiter’s sister’s daughter, an FBI agent whose best friend is Peter Strzok, and a secret service agent who happens to be Lisa Page’s brother that Trump is a very, very bad person. That’s pretty powerful and persuasive evidence against Trump. Looks like game, set, and match to Mueller. Kudos to the NYT. They are, indeed, the true masters of Fake News, unlike those wanna-bees at CNN and MSNBC.

  5. Absent more definitive information this sounds like the usual NYTimes hysteria. As the article notes “according to four people told of the matter” indicates that once again the story is based on anonymous sources. This time, however, the anonymous sources are not providing first-hand information but rather hearsay. Let’s get real.

  6. I am sure if Trump decided to fire Muellar, than Muellar would be fired. Sooo, obviously Trump did not order Muellar fired. Let’s put it in context:

Trump: Hey, Melania, make me a big old beef burrito, with lots of chili and jalapenos!

Melania: If you eat that, I am sleeping in a different room, because you know how chili gives you mega-gas! And I ain’t wearing no clothes pin on my nose all night!

Trump: OK, just have the kitchen make me a hamburger patty and a two scoops of ice cream.

Now, after that, the New York Times runs this head line, “TRUMP Orders Beef Burrito With Chili!!!

That is what this head line for Trumps Orders Muellar Firing is like.

    1. Meueller and NYT waited until he was out of the country to give us six month old stale nothing?

    2. Personally, I am not so sure that Trump didn’t say to fire Muellar, but if he changed his mind, then why run the story??? Or run it with the headline, “Trump Considered Firing Muella” or “Advisors Advise Trump Not To Fire Muellar” or “Trump Thinks Muellar Has A Conflict of Interest.”???

Because those headlines won’t sell papers and views the way that “Trump Ordered Muellar Fired.”

The New York Times is simply part of the propaganda arm of the Democratic Party. Which party, the inner workings are coming to light with all the texts and emails, etc.

  7. The professor opines on a “story” whose authority and credibility stands on, among the same or similar verbiage as, [The New York Times prints, ] “… according to four people told of the matter, …”
[The New York Times publishes,] “… They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they did not want to be identified discussing a continuing investigation. …”

How is this “story” and the “professor’s words” not gossip?

Why is this “story” and the “professor’s words” being communicated?

Why would any reasonable, common sense person read, retell or rely on this “story” or the “professor’s words?”

Why is not the best response to this “story” and the “professor’s words” simple and utter silence?

  8. I hope we will soon see the 4 page FISA memo at least it will have names and sources. This anonymous thing is getting monotonous.

  9. There is something screwy with this whole investigation. Mueller is just the top of the heap now.

          1. What is Thorazine?

A ‘zine devoted to the doings of the Norse god Thor?
            I don’t subscribe.

  10. Hey whatever happened to those poor chaste damsels who wete deflowered by that cad, Roy Moore? On the evening news? Telling their woeful tale under oath? Knitting pu**y hats? Holding up “Move Along Nothing to See Now” signs?

      1. It would take a mind unencumbered by ideology to see the parallels in the hit pieces when the Swamp is threatened! 50k emails found/ Roy Moore electable. Nothing to see here, of course,

        1. Leigh Corfman filed a defamation suit against Moore. Care to make a wager on the outcome?

          1. Yep itwill be denied because she has no character to defame and the whole thing is rigged deal to gal l
allbright paid from the last disaster.

    1. one badly in need of money and of low reputation locally was duped into filing a something or another by Allred so All red could get paid out of the fund her daughter had up in DC to do the same thing also with four but all four disappeared and we’re back to un named anonymous sources manufactured by the NY Tijmes.

      1. Trump probably considers it every day. This story says Trump “ordered it” it but the brave Horatius here lay down before the threshold gate to stop the order from being carried out! Oh the drama! Oh the chivalry! Oh the bull shark!

            1. Sorry…my post was unclear. I meant to say this:

As you said you think Trump probably considers firing Mueller every day, do you think Trump was lying when he said he hasn’t given firing Mueller any thought?

      2. So? where’s the credible sources this is just last minute crap to deflect the business about the memo being released and all the rest from very frightened bunch of stooges. ‘is considering” everyone new that last June was he fired. Shouldhave been but wasn’t BFD.l

      3. six month old sale news with no connection to .. .anything. who at the ny times wrote that one . Did Woodruff confirm and was she asked why wait six months? or Ruddy?

  11. Mueller is a traitor and should have not only been fired long ago, starting when he was FBI director, but he should have been prosecuted, convicted, and imprisoned as a consequence of his traitorous acts to obstruct FBI investigations that could have PREVENTED the 911 crimes from happening. Mueller is a criminal, yet he has been given the power to waste government resources on a fishing expedition in a vain attempt to find something to attack Trump with to benefit the Deep State operatives favoring the Democratic Party Machine. Firing Mueller would be much too kind an act for what he really deserves.

  12. This is according to four unnamed sources who claimed to have been “told” about it.

I hate not being able to trust the news media, but you just can’t. Time and again these stories have come up false and misreported.
