North Carolina Professor Releases Statement To FBI Contradicting Kavanaugh On College Drinking

thumbnailCharles Ludington, a college friend of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, released a statement that directly contradicted the testimony of the judge on this drinking in college.  Ludington told The Washington Post that he gave a statement to the FBI that Kavanaugh was “belligerent and aggressive” as a drunk in college and once threw a beer in the face of someone who insulted him.  He is the third college friend who described Kavanaugh as a belligerent drinker in college.

Ludington is an associate professor at North Carolina State University and stated that “When Brett got drunk, he was often belligerent and aggressive. On one of the last occasions I purposely socialized with Brett, I witnessed him respond to a semi-hostile remark, not by defusing the situation, but by throwing his beer in the man’s face and starting a fight that ended with one of our mutual friends in jail.”

Former classmates Lynne Brookes and Elizabeth Swisher have also given accounts similar to Ludington’s statement.

Ludington has taught at North Carolina State University since 2004 and, according to his bio on the university’s website, Ludington specializes in northern European history. He has also taught at the Marie Curie Senior Research Fellow at University College Cork and the Universite de Bordeaux-Michel Montaigne in France.

Ludington earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale in 1987 and a Doctor of Philosophy and History in 2003 from Columbia University.

He also played basketball for Yale and briefly played professionally in Europe in Paris and Spain.  He has published two books: The Politics of Wine in Britain: A New Cultural History (2013) and A Long Shadow: The Story of an Ulster-Irish Family (2016).

The drinking question could be deemed relevant in two ways.  It could taken as reaffirming the description of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.  It could also be taken as evidence of perjury by Kavanaugh who denied such excessive drinking.  The latter raises a tough question on the use of such an issue as drinking in college should be determinative in a Supreme Court confirmation.  Clearly perjury is perjury but these are matters of opinions on how Kavanaugh acted as a college student when drunk.

    1. The “White House” says one thing but the WH counsel says something else but doesn’t let us know. What Sarah SAnders says and what President Trump says means nothing until the FBI has the paperwork that expands the investigation. There is no indication that the investigation has actually expanded, in fact, since there are so many witnesses who can’t get an FBI response, it’s highly unlikely that the paperwork has been updated to allow the FBI to go where the evidence leads it.

  9. It would be somewhat difficult to prove perjury as Kavanaugh’s constant equivocation (which I found maddening) does have the benefit of covering many outcomes.

    In this instance, I believe he said that at times he had too many beers and sometimes others did and that he never blacked out but, at most, fell asleep. Moreover, the question was never asked as to whether he ever became belligerent or violent while drinking. Consequently, the perjury question becomes difficult to prove but is somewhat supportive of part of Ford’s alleged description of Kavanaugh.

    Overall, it certainly can’t overcome the central problem with her allegation–it remains uncorroborated by the three witnesses she identified.

    1. It was obvious the allegation was a non-starter for Democrats on the committee as they did not ask BK one question regarding it. They only thing they had to work with are questions about the drinking habits and behaviors of a high school/college age male. Every response to those questions are all opinion, including those from BK himself.

      If we are to disqualify every nominee for the Supreme Court based solely on the opinions of one’s alcohol usage and behavior back in high school and/or college, the short list would very likely be non-existent.

  12. One should never be subject to perjury – or any other criminal claims of false representation over differences of opinion.
    And that is all this is.

    Ignoring the perjury, the claims regarding Kavanaugh’s drinking and behavior are completely different potentially legitimate claims regarding his fitness for the court.

    Though they beg the question of why the FBI after 6 investigations, never found this before.
    Kavanaugh’s college conduct is fully inside the scope of prior FBI investigations.

    I would further note this does not really add anything to the Ford allegation

    Throwing something at someone while purportedly drunk is not the same as attempting to rape another and laughiing while doing so.

    Further I am not so sure this si a difference of opinion so much as a diifference of spin.

    Kavanaugh has admitted to getting inebriated. His testimony is that he never blacked out.
    That would be hard to prove.

    In this instance we have a real witness alleging specific conduct by Kavanaugh while drunk.

    The other allegations I have heard regarding Kavanaugh and drinkin are not credible.
    They make broad generalizations regarding Kavanaughs conduct without much basis.

    Lawyers are all about process. There must be a way for lawyers and litigants who have appeared before him to register complaints if he behaved badly. What is that process?

    1. Kamala Harris never attended U.C. Berkeley. Her undergraduate degree is from Howard. Her JD is from Hastings College of the Law (in San Francisco.) Her mother is from India. Her father is from Jamaica, and is half black and half white. It’s surprising that she didn’t get into an Ivy or near-Ivy law school, given that she is 1/4 black.

  20. Based on what I have read, Ludington accuses Kavanaugh of lying when the latter claimed he had never “blacked out” from alcohol, yet he only refers to instances where he became “belligerent and aggressive”. An untalented use of the straw man fallacy is what this seems to be.

    Ludington accuses Kavanaugh of throwing a beer to the face of someone who made a “semi-hostile” insult to him. A few questions and remarks:

    * Oh-My-God!!! A kid insulted another kid, and the kid who was insulted threw some beer to the kid who made the insult. Clearly, a career must end for this!!! (sarcasm noted)

    * Grown men don’t complain about someone throwing beer to the face of someone else who made a “semi-hostile” insult. Don’t be a snowflake.

    * How “semi” was this “semi-hostile” insult?

    * Why, if Kavanaugh was the aggressor, did another kid, a “mutual friend” end up in jail instead? What does the police report say regarding Kavanaugh’s role in this situation? Have the FBI investigations found this information?

    * Is that all Ludington has!? A teenage Kavanaugh drank beer, just like he has acknowledged? He allegedly responded to a “semi-hostile” insult by throwing some beer to the face of the perpetrator? Is this a good reason to destroy a man, his career, his life, and his family?

What is relevant, however, is that the trump-stooge Kav repeatedly lied: in the instant proceeding and in his Senate hearing for his current position. So sorry for your inability to recognize the difference between facts and nonsensical chatter.
