Christmas Eve In Chicago

We are spending Christmas in Chicago with the whole Turley clan. The weather is amazingly warm in the 50s. This was the picture in the morning yesterday on a walk with Luna along the lake.

Tonight I will be making our traditional Cioppino soup β€” a tradition started by my late father, Jack Turley. I hated the soup as a kid so fate has left this tradition to me. I am now as addicted to the soup as my father was.

It will be a balmy Christmas in Chicago!

    1. Charles – I am Irish-German. I can do potatoes and blood pudding. What is cioppino?

Spending time with family, going through the motions of traditions, and rituals/familiar environs often help one heal and grow from traumatic events. You had a brutal November and December: death threats to you and your family, at your home and place of employment, your industry colleagues turned on you and your reputation has lost currency.

What did you learn from it?
Looking back, what did you achieve? What impact did you have?
How will you see Jonathan Turley and live his vocation for the time remaining?

When Antonin Scalia died, you wrote that Nino was one of the few Justices who did not change as a result of serving on the Supreme Court, rather he changed the Court.

However, he left 30 years of opinions that challenged and often changed doctrines in a wide array of areas. These opinions show a depth and scope that sets them apart in the annals of the Court.

Nino never compromised his principles. He was authentic till his death. He was an inspiring figure, knew his rightful place in the grand scheme of things, he knew who he was and who he was not, and he had lasting impact in many realms: jurisprudence, red hot culture wars, on people of all Faiths, people who sought his counsel from Breyer, Ginsburg, Kagan to millions of Catholics like me, and his deference to God was his source of life.

As you reflect on these events, know that you have many years ahead of you. You can impact great change on many people, those with lofty government titles and those who aspire to have those titles. You can help the nation find its direction by pointing to the Foundational Documents that established this great country, just like Nino did. I hope these events serve as a metanoia for you, much like St Paul the Apostle was thrown off his horse and blinded by light, may you too proceed accordingly.

Peace, Light and Blessings on you, your family and your blog readers.

    Immanuel: God with us

    Merry Christmas everyone

      1. And to you sock puppet! Have a Margaritta for us and take pics of you swallowing the guzano!

Cindy Bragg – Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to you and your husband. See “Richard Jewell.”

          1. Cindy Bragg – I wasn’t watching and somehow my signature line got screwed up so +W seems to be me. I think I have corrected it now.

              1. Cindy Bragg – it will be a Xmas of electronic gifts and gift cards. πŸ˜‰ Same old, same old. At least here you never have to shovel sun. πŸ˜‰

                1. Paul C….good one..lol
Btw, hubby was going to watch the 2019 BBC production of Christmas Carol last night, but the opening scene has a boy urinating on Marley’s tombstone! Needless to say, that’s as much as he saw of the new production. Wondered if you saw it.

                  1. Cindy Bragg – actually that would fit with the story, however I only watch the Alistar Sims version. πŸ™‚

                    1. Oh, absolutely, the Sim is the best….but just watched first version (Reginald Owen?) and it’s not as bad as I remembered, but still no match for Alistair’s.

                    2. Cindy Bragg – Alistair Sim also played the potty headmistress of St. Trinian’s in that lovely series of comedies.

                    3. Paul C …theose were funny!
My favorite Alistair Sim film is a little known 1950’s comedy.: The Green Man.
It is a scream…..very, very clever and great cast.

                    4. Cindy Bragg – Hawkins: Ah! School days. The happiest days of one’s life. I was a carefree innocent lad in those far off times. Only one thing clouded my youthful spirits: my abominable headmaster. Really, all I did was to put an electric charge in his fountain pen and an explosive in the inkpot. I honestly only intended to humiliate him. However, that got rid of him, and it also disposed of any doubts I may have had about my true vocation.

    1. Ricardo: “I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her: marooned for all eternity in the center of a Christmas Market, buried alive in the snow……. Buried alive.”

      1. Anonymous – I would posit that it is ranks in the best seasonal songs, but it really isn’t the best Xmas song. I would suggest White Christmas with Bing Crosby.

  2. Professor……hope you have a wonderful family holiday.
My only Chicago experience was as a teenager, staying at the Palmer House in December, 1962. The Palmer was gorgeous and the snow outside was sooty-black…..very exciting and memorable.

  5. A cabbie once told me the temp in Chicago dropped to 30’ below. Hyperbole?

    Blessed Christmas to your family.

    1. There was a Xmas in the early 1980’s when Chicago had a windchill factor of 30 below.
