The Oxford Union bills itself as “the most prestigious debating society in the world” based on the values of free speech. It is a well-earned reputation for one of the world’s oldest forums for debating the great issues of the day. However, Oxford students are outraged that the Union will allow a debate over transgender ideology. In response, as reported by the The Times UK, the Union has promised to provide a “non-student support team that will remain in a separate welfare space to offer counseling and advice.” This is to deal with the trauma of free speech in simply allowing Dr. Kathleen Stock to speak about her views that biological sex is real and “gender identity” should not alter certain biological truths.
Stock is a feminist who has joined those (like the author J.K. Rowling) in raising concerns over transgender ideology. Her book, “Material Girls: Why Reality Matters for Feminism,” explores the subject and calls for a reaffirming of fixed biological realities.
At the same time, Stock has stressed her support for trans rights generally, writing that trans people “deserve to be safe, to be visible throughout society without shame or stigma, and to have exactly the same life opportunities as non-trans people do.”
Nevertheless, Oxford’s LGBTQ+ society called for censorship of the debate society and objected to her being allowed to be heard on campus as a “transphobic and trans-exclusionary speaker.” They alleged that the union was ignoring the welfare of the society’s members under the guise of free speech.
It really is not a “guise” but the very essence of free speech.
Stock was previously a faculty member at University of Sussex, but was effectively forced out due to protests. She is now a Founding Faculty Fellow of the University of Austin, a school founded on free speech principles.
The Oxford Union deserves considerable credit for maintaining its commitment to free speech in the face of yet another cancel campaign. What is most notable about the campaign is the objection to “letting Stock bring her campaign of hate and misinformation to Oxford [and] allowing her to stoke fear against trans people without challenge or opposition.”
This is a debating society. Stock will be challenged and questioned. That is the point. What the LGBTQ+ society is advocating is the cancellation of such speakers to bar “challenge or opposition” to its own views.
The creation of “welfare spaces” is a bit difficult to square with the free speech foundation of the Union. It is also unlikely that emotional support teams are available when writers and professors are denounced as Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists (TERFs).
There has long been an anti-free speech movement based on the notion of free speech as harmful. This dangerous trend in academia is discussed in my law review article, Jonathan Turley, “Harm and Hegemony: The Decline of Free Speech in the United States”, Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy.
The Union reinforces this view by promising to have emotional support ready and safe spaces set aside for those traumatized by hearing opposing views.
I have previously written of my pride as an alumnus of The University of Chicago in how the school has led the fight for free speech in higher education. It is also ranked as the number one free speech school in the country. (I will be speaking at UChicago next week on Friday and Saturday, including one event on free speech).
UChicago shocked many in 2016 when it sent a letter to incoming students that promised an unfettered and uncensored education without the protection from disturbing or offensive ideas. While most schools are actively curtailing free speech, its letter warned the students that they will not be protected against ideas or given “safe spaces.”
Again, Oxford Union has remained faithful to its noble commitment to free speech inviting Stock. I can also understand the desire to be responsive and understanding to the deep-felt sense of injury by some. However, universities do not have to protect people from the trauma of hearing opposing views. They need to empower everyone to speak freely and to associate with others who share their values.
I may be naive, but I also hope that a few critics might also want to hear Stock and engage in a productive and civil debate at the Oxford Union.
I have no problem with this safe space. Just make sure it’s stocked with plenty of binkies, blankies, and diapers for these poor babies.
I think of the Oxford Union as a highly woke institution so I am impressed that they are debating the value of promoting mental illness in society today. Well done. I have no qualms about setting up a romper room for the kids when their feelings are hurt. Better they sit in their romper room rather than indoctrinating children into their cult.

I’m not sure what you mean by “consuming”? I do have an occasional glass of dry red wine, or a whiskey sour. I particularly like wine with a juicy filet or even a good quality black Angus hamburger. OTOH, I don’t smoke cigars, or use any tobacco products. Nor do I vape.
As far as where I get my information, I generally pay attention to what’s happening in the news and what’s happening in my own community. Also, I have several kids in their 20’s and several more who are teens and in high school, all of whom are users of social media. We have a good and open relationship, and so I’m aware of what’s happening in their schools, in our school district, and what’s being discussed on their social media platforms.
P.S. If you don’t have kids yet, I highly recommend it. It is the thing that has brought me the most happiness in life.

Jonathan: Well, it’s Saturday and time for another episode of how “free speech” rights are being attacked–this time by Oxford students who protested an invitation to Dr. Kathleen Stock to speak on her favorite subject–how transgender rights are threatening tradition gender roles. You say Stock is a “feminist” who is simply raising concerns about “transgender ideology”. Being transgender is not about “ideology” Transgender is a term to describe someone who identifies with a gender that is different from their biological sex. Scientific studies show that the brain in transgenders is wired differently. So hormone therapy and surgeries are used too modify the body to help individuals transition to the gender they identify with. But the anti-LGBTQ+ crowd thinks women are women and men are men and never the twain should meet.
Stock finally decided to leave Sussex because it put out a statement in support of “our trans and non-binary students” and against “institutional transphobia”. Stock didn’t like all the criticism she received and the failure of Sussex to back up her anti-science views. So she has fled GB and moved across the pond where she thinks her views will find a more receptive audience among the anti-LBGT+ crowd here in the US. She is probably right because anti-queer and transphobia is rampant among the far-right in this country–especially in Texas and Florida–where Gov. DeSantis is on an “anti-gay” crusade. But I suspect the students in Austin will not exactly welcome Stock’s presence. You can run but you can’t hide!

A significant part of the problem with all this Trans stuff is that it is a stupid effort to take normal distributions and slice and dice them into labels.
Like nearly all human attributes, masculinity and femininity distribute on a normal (bell) curve. Approx. 90% of us fall within 2 std dev of the center of that curve.
Regardless masculinity is not binary, Femininitiy is not binary. Nor are myriads of other human traits.
All males and females are a unique blend of attributes – some of which are more typically feminine and some of which are more typically masculine, with each expressed along that bell curve.
It is absolutely certain that human brain chemistry will vary from individual to individual.
It is also absolutely certain that there can not be some clear dividing line between trans and cis – and that in fact all these constructs are artificial attempts to attach false binary labels to natural human variation.
The gender label idiocy is doing a disservice to humantiy – while the good news is that it properly deconstructs sterotype male/female labels.
At the same time it essentially repeats the same mistake only with more catagories. This is part of the reason the number of genders keeps expanding without limit and the number of pronouns.
Because the left is trying to take natural variability on muliple axis’s each a bell curve and force fit those into labeled buckets.
Ignoring a few rare chromosomal anomalies there are only two sexes. There is no rational or scientific foundation for any distinction between gender and sex.
But there is absolute certainty that the expression of human traits including those traits that are sex weighted, distribute with infinite variety.
I would further note this also with scientific and logical certainty disproves the sudden explosion of “trans” people.
Again traits distrubute along a bell curve and by definition 90% of us MUST fall within 2 std dev’s.
The sudden explosion of sexual dysphoria is also obviously social rather than real – because the laws of evoltuon require every species to reproduce or die.
Homo Sapiens has been arround for 300K years. For most of that time we needed birth rates of 5-7 to endure the survival of the species. Even today we require rates of atleast 2.1. That is difficult to acheive if large portions of people are homosexual or trans.
Nature does not make those kinds of mistakes.
But humans can be deluded into beleiving it does.
Fools have arisen in the western world, thinking their ideas superior to what now exists. These fools come from a class of immature idealists, stomping their feet and crying Damn You, You’ve Hurt My Feelings, having been taught by lazy unprincipled parents and teachers. As it should be, if you choose to smoke, drink, take drugs or eat yourself into a massive blob, you alone are responsible. I would rather spend money councilling these lost souls than to pay for their very expensive long term care.

If we look at healthcare costs, the most expensive times are birth and death. The longer we live, the more healthcare encounters there are. The two biggest killers are heart disease and cancer. The majority of people will die from one of them. Smokers, like the general population, are prone to those diseases.
Smokers die younger, so Medicare and social security payments are much lower for that group. Overall, smokers cost less. Add all those savings to the cigarette taxes they pay, and they are helping reduce our budget deficit.

Exactly. I am always posting about that obese lizzo who has become the face of “identiy politics” in that she is pushing this obese lifestyle to young people. I asked facebook fact checkers why they weren’t labeling her pro-obese message as misinformation. Most of the foods sold either in grocery stores or big box restaurants will eventually kill you by heart disease, diabetes and kidney failure. Stay away from those places and cook at home whole foods with no additives. Shop from your local farm stand and stay away from produce that has been modified for better shelf life and transportation methods.
I don’t know about Europe, but the United States is rapidly approaching a state of peak woke, which will result in the decimation of Democrat elites running for office in 2024. Out-of-control prices and the coming layoffs are causing working-class and middle-class Democrat families to clearly see the harm from massive illegal immigration, massive government spending, and the banning of inexpensive fossil fuels.
