New York University is investigating an incident involving three alleged NYU students caught on videotape tearing down posters of Hamas hostages. The videos were taken outside NYU’s Tisch Hall and shared by the Students Supporting Israel NYU Chapter. The chapter identified them as NYU students, but it is not clear if that has been established by the university.
The red and white posters with the word “KIDNAPPED” have gone up across New York City to remind people that 200 people have been taken hostage by Hamas.
It is telling that these individuals wanted to remove the images of these victims of a terrorist attack. It is one thing to advocate for Palestinian rights and to protest grievances. Many on our campuses have done so for years. However, that should be accompanied by a condemnation of the massacre of civilians, rape of women, and the taking of hostages. Those are atrocities and constitute crimes against humanity under international law. Hamas does not represent the Palestinian cause. It is a terrorist group that has engaged in unspeakable crimes.
Update: A NYU student has now admitted to being one of those tearing down the images. Yazmeen Deyhimi stated
“I have found it increasingly difficult to know my place as a biracial brown woman, especially during these highly volatile times. I have felt more and more frustrated about the time we currently find ourselves in, and misplaced that anger into actions that are not an accurate representation of who I am as a person.”

I have a personal theory as to why any American Jew would oppose Israel’s right to defend herself. Hamas propaganda blames Israel for the Palestinian suffering that Hamas itself caused. Israel, the US, and Brussels provided Gaza with over 100 million euros, and equipment, to build a state of the art water supply. Israel provided free water in the meantime. Hamas cut up the pipes to make homemade missiles, with which it bombed Jews. It was able to do that because of the free water from Israel. When Israel cut the water off, Hamas avoided mentioning that they were the reason Gazans had no water supply, and instead called Israel Nazis committing genocide on Palestinians. Hamas fired rockets past a hospital in Gaza, aimed at Israel. One of the rockets misfired and bombed the hospital. Hamas lied and claimed Israel deliberately bombed the hospital, and were Nazis committing genocide.
There are a lot of low information voters that just take rhetoric at face value, and do not confirm it with independent sources. AOD, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib have all repeated false Hamas propaganda, even claiming Israel deliberately targeted children, and raped women. Most Jewish people vote Democrat, and most Democrats repeat talking points and are resentful of facts that prove them wrong. Groups like Jews for Peace actually believe this propaganda, and when they became convinced that Israel was committing genocide, they opposed it.
It is a pity that they did not simply watch the videos that Hamas itself uploaded to brag about their crimes. They also shared videos discussing how they cut up the water pipes. If they had watched Hamas’ atrocities against Jews, they might understand it’s Hamas committing genocide.
Sadly, people won’t do their research. Gays will still support the terrorist groups who would murder them the first chance they got. Some Jewish organizations will support Hamas.

I have the same question and while I am married to an Orthodox Jewish Talmudic scholar he has explained to me that it is only the Reform and Conservative Jews who support the left. The Hasidic and Orthodox communities are by far quite conservative and detest what the Reform Jews, such as Chuck Schumer, believe. In fact, my husband told me that Schumer makes him embarrassed to share the same heritage as himself. He explained that it is partly due to the Jews who were treated better by the early Russian communists after 1914 and also there is the concept of Tikkun olam in Judaism, which refers to various forms of action intended to repair and improve the world. In classical rabbinic literature, the phrase referred to legal enactments intended to preserve the social order. Now it is seen as similar to the progressive concept of the “perfection of mankind”. In the end, though, those Jews who are adhering to progressive ideas are straying far from their original Torah in many ways.
