The “Exhilaration” of Massacre: Russell Rickford and the Radical Chic of Higher Education
Below is a slightly expanded version of my column in The Messenger on the recent controversy over Cornell Professor Russell Rickford and his celebration of the massacre in Israel. I have opposed calls to censor or fire Rickford. However, this controversy should highlight a more troubling trend in academia in the hiring of extremists as a type of radical chic.  The problem is not that we have radical left voices on the faculty. The problem is the lack of intellectual diversity left after decades of purging conservative, libertarian, and dissenting faculty members from many universities.Here is the column:Cornell University Professor Russell Rickford is much in the news this week with his celebration of the Hamas attack on Israel. While insisting he does not condone the targeting of civilians, he heralded as “exhilarating” an attack that led to the massacre of civilians, the raping of women, and the taking of hostages. As some in the media and academia now distance themselves from Rickford, they ignore their past support for him and others with the same radical agenda in academia.At Stanford, Ameer Hasan Loggins was suspended after telling a small number of Jewish students to collect their things and stand in the corner. “This is what Israel does to the Palestinians,” Greenberg reportedly said, “How many people died in the Holocaust?… Six million. Colonizers killed more than 6 million. Israel is a colonizer.”These academics were well-known by their schools for their extreme views and advocacy in classrooms. They are part of an academia that now runs largely from the left to the far left.

I have previously opposed efforts to censor academics or students based on their controversial viewpoints. What is ironic is that many of the figures who have led past cancel campaigns are now the subject of the same calls after supporting Hamas’ attack.

The greater concern should be that Rickford is not the exception but the rule for many faculties in a shift to the far left. Many schools have purged Republicans, conservatives and libertarians over the last two decades. In that sense, Rickford is the norm, part of academia’s radical chic.

Rickford made news in Ithaca when he worked a crowd with his joy over the Hamas attack. In the wake of clear atrocities, Rickford was ecstatic: “Hamas has punctured the illusion of invincibility.  … Nothing will be the same again … It was exhilarating. It was exhilarating, it was energizing. And if they weren’t exhilarated by this challenge to the monopoly of violence, by this shifting of the balance of power, then they would not be human. I was exhilarated.”

A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Rickford has long been a favorite of some media, including the Washington Post which has run his columns. Citing struggles from Black Lives Matter to the Palestinian cause in one Post column, Rickford insisted that Blacks need to reclaim the radical image of Martin Luther King and realize that true solutions will not be found through the government but “from the unruly and subversive elements that lie below.”

Cornell was enthusiastic in adding him to its faculty ranks as it has other militant far-left faculty. At the same time, it has gradually eliminated the conservative voices that Rickford has denounced.

Even Cornell’s director of “diversity and inclusion” at the School of Management  called the massacre an act of “resistance” in an Instagram post and told those traumatized by the terrorism to “F–k your fake outrage at Palestine.”

Recently, the Harvard Crimson found that the university had effectively eliminated conservatives from most departments. One survey revealed that more than three-quarters of Harvard Arts and Sciences and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences faculty respondents identify as “liberal” or “very liberal.” Only 2.5% identified as “conservative,” and only 0.4% as “very conservative.”

A study by Georgetown University’s Kevin Tobia and MIT’s Eric Martinez found that only 9% of law school professors identify as conservative at the top 50 law schools. A 2017 study found that 15% of faculties were conservative, and another study found that 33 out of 65 departments lacked a single conservative faculty member.

Keep in mind that, according to Gallup, “37% of Americans described their political views as moderate, 36% as conservative” in 2022. Only a quarter identified as liberal (25%) — yet that segment of our society occupies the vast majority of university faculty positions.

Nevertheless, Rickford and others on campuses have been widely cited as describing such bias and the dominance of liberal values as a myth.

Academics like Asheesh Kapur Siddique, an assistant professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, have written columns that the dominance of the left on campuses is a pure myth, as is the “alleged lack of ideological diversity on American college campuses.”

In reality, Siddique insisted, the “modern American university is a right-wing institution” and the “right’s dominance of academia and its reign over universities is destroying higher education, and the only way to save the American university is for students and professors to take back control of campuses.”

At the same time, Rickman and others have railed against whites on campuses — racist attacks that would never be tolerated if directed at other groups. Rickman has said that only a “sliver” of whites actually want equality. He insists that, for most whites, “deep in their heart, they despise your blackness more than anything else.” He called for an “antiracist movement to defeat capitalism altogether and it’s not going to happen at the ballot box.”

Many academic leaders seem desperate to prove they are part of that “sliver” of the enlightened, by hiring far-left advocates like Rickman. They nod in agreement or remain silent in the face of racist, inflammatory rhetoric.

For many professors, the risk is simply too great when they could be the next target of a cancel campaign. Now, those same long-silent academic voices are being raised in shock at Rickman’s latest rhetoric. Yet, in fairness to Rickman, he has hardly been subtle or restrained; he simply directed his hate-spewed rhetoric against others in the past.

After years of calling upon donors to respond to this academic echo chamber, a few are finally waking up after the rationalizations of Hamas’ terror attack. That response is a couple decades late, given the support of universities and colleges for years as they adopted increasingly intolerant and orthodox environments.

The solution, again, is not greater censorship but greater diversity on faculties. Donors and alumni need to demand a reversal of the elimination of conservative, libertarian, and dissenting voices on faculties.

Such reforms will occur only after they recognize that Rickford has long been the ideal, not the aberration, in academia.

      That is a a form of “death threat” itself.

      We are NOT yet at the point in which “death threats” to partisan DAs are justified.

      But we ARE headed in that direction.

      Sam Harris was WRONG when he announced that it was acceptable to get rid of Trump by any means necescary – not because there is not a point at which resistance to evil justifies violence, but because the use of violence requires absolutely clear evil – not merely political disagement.

      WE have Hamas and some on the left claiming that israels conduct justifies – not just violence against israel, but deliberately targeting women and children.

      So clearly the left accepts that death threats can be justified.

      One of the problems with the logic of those of you on the left, is that you are so constantly spraying such shallow first order reasoning.

      The prohibition against threats and violence is NOT absolute.
      The threshold at which it is justified is high – and we have not YET reached that.

      But you should not forget this country was born of a revolution – violence.
      And significant portions of the left wish to have it reborn – in violence if nececscary.

      The farther you – the left go outside the norms and the law and the constitution – the closer you get to the point at which violence is not merely necscary but certain.

      Though I do find it interesting that in leftie world – violence or threats of violence or even anger at the lawlessness of the left is unjustified. But almost everything that is in opposition to the whims of the left justifies violence.

Conservative Republicans have long been staunch supporters of Israel, while democrats consistently lean towards Palestine/Hamas etc. Yet American Jews have voted Democrat very reliably for decades. Now, the anti-semitism that has been simmering just below the surface on the left is boiling over and American Jews are forced to look at it and decide where to go from here.

  4. The professors call for diversity is meaningless since the left has a monopoly on decision making in many of these universities. They will not give up their monopoly easily.

    There is more than enough money in all the college endowments to fund college education. Car manufacturers fund their own car loans, why cant colleges fund all the collage loans? But like car loans, the debt will be subject to cancellation by bankruptcy. The University is selling a product, The Product is a trade or proffession that allows the servicing of the loan. The University surely believes the product they are selling is more the adequate to service the debt. Right?

    1. Iowan, it is a lot more money than the money provided by the government for all sorts of things. The tax codes are involved and push money to these universities. Their charity designation means a tax-free donation of $1 Billion is 500 Million provided by the people of the US. When $1 Billion is earned, that is the equivalent of a taxpayer loss of $500 Million. Taxes not paid by the universities are made up by the taxpayer. End these deductions that are not seen by the people and end the 501 C 3 designation.

  7. There are many reasons for the current ideological condition of American schools. The main reason is the decision of leaders of the Democratic in the late 1950’s to racialize politics by projecting the Marxist categories of Oppressor and Oppressed onto American life. It was good politics but results for the country.

    Free speech is more than a principle, it is a requirement for a functional and free society.

    The best choice for schools colleges and universities is to actually practice the tolerance they claim to beleive.

    If you truly beleive that sexual diversity, racial diversity, cultural diversity are positive goods – and for the most part they are – then political diversity is an equal or greater good.

    The importance of free speech goes beyond the rights of the speaker.
    Free speech is more than a principle, because it is a necescity that those controling an institution can not preclude those within the institution from HEARING views that challenge the dominant position.

    Those on the left used to chant “Fight the power” – today they ARE the power.
    Today they aRE everything they fought against a generation ago.

  10. Thankfully, at Harvard and other universities, quite a few of the very large donors are retracting their financial support to the tune of millions and millions of dollars. Good. More of this needs to happen.

    I met a person yesterday who is a hospital physician. She is approximately 40 and graduated with 400,000+ in debt, during the days of low interest rates. She has it whittled down to 290,000.

    The institutions of higher learning are often tone deaf and out of step with the reality of the real world. The faculty get paid and especially in elite schools have a generous pension to look forward to in retirement. They would have no clue how to survive outside of their fake reality.,This graduate physician makes good money but was likely never taught to her the difference of what a person makes and what they get to keep, especially when it comes to income brackets and compound interest.

    We are feeling it now but in the decades to come, there will be a dearth of providers and specialists. Meanwhile, instead of simply teaching mathematics, physics, anatomy, etc., the universities, in some cases are more interested in the campus “experience.”

    Their campus “experience” has now come at a price.

      Interesting to watch how people and these institutions suddenly have a change of heart when their support for Hamas may put their perspective employment status in jeopardy or donations from alumi dry up.
      Need to teach students starting in grade school civics, the Constitution, the importance of the Bill of Rights and critical thinking through 12th grade. Then if they choose to go to college, they have the skills to ignore leftists indoctrination.

          I would go further and make college degrees obsolete. Open up jobs to high school grads with good grades, strong work ethic, and the drive to learn. Give them paid internships with an offer for a full time position after a given time and testing proving they know the trade.
          We need a parallel system that gets young people jobs without the bulk of college debt. Half of college course requirements are useless anyways.
          There are professions that do need higher education like doctors, but even then, they could streamline those courses to the medical field and ditch the useless courses like DEI.

            Upstate, an expensive part of the hiring process is selecting which potential hires to interview. The college degree helps reduce employer costs especially today where in many cases being a high school graduate doesn’t guarantee proficiency in English or math.

            Public schools should center their teaching around English and STEM along with civics and American history. If a child can’t read or do math, he won’t succeed.

    I have been advocating for the alumni and donors to use their influence to work toward a truely balenced college cirruculum and full spectrum of American political views.

  14. Amen! The answer isn’t to stop free speech, even disgusting examples like this professor’s, but to have more balanced speech by hearing more views from the other side. It’s always amazing to me that the liberals who fought “the man” in the 60s and 70s have now become “the man” and want to censure free speech and thought.

    Oh, no, no, no, that is precisely the problem. There is no such thing as diversity of thought with a radicalized ideologue. It’s not much different than this quote attributed to Golda Meir:

    These radicals don’t want to “coexist” with anyone to their right; on campus, or anywhere else. They are to our culture and academia what Hamas is to the Palestinians and Gaza. Treat them like the metastasized cancer on our country that they are.

    1. It was recently stated by someone I admire that these radical Muslims (be they members of Hamas or sympathizers), will kill every Jew until they no longer exist, then Christians. That is their history dating back to the 7th century when Islam was created. Few Muslims embrace this jihadist mindset today, but as usual, it is the radical minority that prevail. I have known and befriended many Muslims. I even dated a Palestinian woman decades ago. None of them wanted to kill anyone.

Its the radical crazies who launched a missile that hit an Episcopalian run hospital in Gaza that should be pushed into Egypt, Med Sea or whatever Muslim country will take them. They have no historical claim to land regions where Jews have lived, as I have stated Jews predate Muslim existence by >2000 years. This needs to be emphasized over and over again.

        2. Olly, I recollect Lebanon was a Christian nation many decades ago and was the Paris and financial center of the Middle East. What happened to it? Terrorists have replaced good people and have around 100,000 missiles aimed to kill non-Muslims. Intermittently, Gatestone reports on the declining Christian population in the Middle East and their slaughter. No one pays attention, and occasionally, I post their articles on the slaughtering of Christians.

          It is comforting to think of Muslims as peaceful because we deal with many who are probably the majority. However, too many will follow the wrong path when their leaders call for Jihad, responding even if they do not use violence.

          When one hears the term Sharia Law, one needs to recognize that Sharia Law displaces civil law, and suddenly, all but Muslims become second-class citizens or worse. If you are gay, carry a parachute, for you might find yourself flying off the roof of a tall building.

          Saying these things is painful because I have Muslim friends, and we have one on the blog I have deep respect for who is most intelligent and peaceful. However, when we consider Muslims as a whole, we are justified to be careful. That was the advice of a Muslim who was calling for reform.

          Everyone should read the Muslim Brotherhood papers from the Holy Land Trial calling for the destruction of the West from within. Additional reading is the Hamas Charter which calls for the death of all Jews. There is also The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. He had a pact with Hitler to exterminate the Jews. Yassir Arafat, who founded the PLO, was his nephew. But we don’t have to look at history. Look at Iran, whose leaders call Israel the Little Satan and America the Big Satan.

    Since hamas has no such weapons and theirs take out a car or mabye a little brick wall gets a hole in it, his exhilaration instantly vanished.

      If a hospital is where Hamas keeps military supplies and weapons – it is a legitimate target.

      What is it that YOU recommend ? The deliberate targeting of children, women, non-combatants violates international law – it is terrorism. The use of hostages, women, children, non-combatants as shields violates international law. The use of hospitals and schools for military purposes violates international law.

      The reason it violates international law is exactly the garbage you are spouting.
      No people can survive if it is opposed by a group intent on exterminating them and willing to hide in hospitals, and schools, behind women and children.

      When the US invaded afghanistan and Iraq – there were a minimum of 200,000 civilian casualties, and possibly as many as 1M. Many people here found that perfectly acceptable – an overwhelming majority of our senators and representatives voted for that. And most americans supported it for years.

      Israel is attempting to destroy Hamas entirely – we should all hope they succeed.
      AS in all wars – there will be civilian casualties – we all hope those will be low.
      At this time if you are in the northern half of Gaza – you have chosen to place yourself in harms way.
      I may have sympathy for you – but I can not condemn the Israeli’s who gave you every oportunity to go somewhere safe.

      Finally, Hamas is in power because the people of Gaza voted a terrorist organization into power.
      Though I would note that Hamas is far worse than just a terrorist organization – their values are the opposite of every single thing that those of you on the left claim to support. They are anti-semitic, anti-women, intolerant religious fundimentalists, anti-gay, anti-trans, anti- democracy.

      These are the people gazan’s elected. And these are their actual occupiers, their actual colonizers. Gazan’s have all the freedom that Hamas will allow them – INSIDE GAZA – just as the people of any other country do.
      Once upon a time Gaza was a mediterainian oasis, is popular vacation destination. It is not Israeli’s that ruined it.
      It has been under control of arabs from the conclusion of the 1948 through the present the majority of that time.

      No one in the world wants refugees from Gaza – for good reason.

      Did Hamas use the hospital as a weapons factory? It is well known Hamas uses civilians as shields. Did Hamas use the hospital as a factory? I don’t know, neither do you, unless you are on site. Yes they make smaller weapons that take out cars and houses, but store 100 or a 1000 such bombs together in the basement of a hospital and you get a bomb that will blow up the hospital. Out of the question they would do that? Not at all.

      It is stunning that universities are protecting these academic anti-semitic jihadists. If faculty at any US university expressed racist, anti-black verbiage, we all know how that would go.

      Americans have to return to the classical liberal arts and sciences education that we once had. Students at home, grade schools and higher learning institutes need to be taught by parents, teachers and professors about logic, classical philosophical reasoning, scientific objective truths, and immutable facts. Parents have abdicated their roles in forming the conscience of their children which is why students at universities are essentially sheeple. their parents and high school teachers never inspired them to be great citizens of our society. Instead they are parasites, and parasites are pathogens to the human race.
