Flight Risk: NBC Warns Viewers that DeSantis Did Not Personally Fly Back Americans from Israel

Yesterday, we discussed NBC’s bizarre comparison of Hunter Biden’s multimillion dollar alleged influence peddling to Nikki Haley’s daughter’s use of TikTok. The comparison was made to hit Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. That target is notable due to another equally bizarre “fact check” by the network where the company suggested that DeSantis half lied when he claimed to have arranged the removal of hundreds of American citizens from Israel. The network said it was only “half true” because someone else flew the planes, DeSantis only supplied the money. I kid you not.

Here is the what NBC calls a fact check of a Republican:

The network dispels any notion that DeSantis personally flew the planes to Israel and said that “DeSantis’ primary role was to fund the flights.”

Well, yeah.  As NBC News’ Peter W. Klein explained,

On Oct. 12, DeSantis signed an executive order that allowed the Florida Division of Emergency Management to pay for Americans in Israel to fly back to the U.S. The flights, however, were organized by Tampa-based nonprofit Project Dynamo, which specializes in rescuing Americans in distress, and DeSantis’ primary role was to fund the flights.

So how is it “half true” to say “I scrambled resources in Florida. I sent planes over to Israel and I brought back over 700 people to safety”? He even made direct references to supplying “the resources” for the flights.

The correction also implicates millions of parents who regularly say that they “flew the kids home” for the holidays. NBC is suggesting that you should say “I supplied money to allow my kids to purchase tickets to have United Airlines fly them home.” However, it was not the company as a whole that literally flew them back so you might want to say “to have employees of United Airlines fly them home.”

NBC could also now presumably tackle more aspirational flight claims like the many bumper stickers claiming that “Jesus is my co-pilot.” Not only are the cars not capable of prolonged flight, but Jesus is not even licensed in any state to operate a motor vehicle.

For NBC, declaring this a half truth is still preferable to saying that it is true, particularly when the statement was preceded by a criticism of President Joe Biden in asserting that “[President] Biden’s neglect has been atrocious, we had Floridians that were over there after the attack. He left them stranded; they couldn’t get flights out.”

NBC’s fact check brings new meaning to Benjamin Franklin’s warning that “Half a truth is often a great lie.”

  1. The lies of the national security state are so numerous, tangled, and contradictory that their entire Narrative War is collapsing under the weight of its own falsehoods and internal contradictions. As the election approaches., watch for more and more absurd claims, and, of course, false flag events using operatives that have come across our southern border. These psychopaths have only one tool set in their toolbox: lies, deceit, and violence. The Great Awakening continues.

  2. It’s only 1/4 true because DeSantis did not build the plain. He only provided the money.

  3. Pure insanity. I always research the ages of the people involved in such idiocy in institutions, and they are almost always under 40. The others are just insidious. Still, I’ll bet that was penned by someone lower on the totem pole. In some very real ways we have created the seeds of our own destruction. This is school-yard level devolution, and it isn’t getting better. The larger framework of society means little when what’s at root is eating it from the foundation like a swarm of coddled and petulant termites.

    1. James,
Sad part is they really believe they are correct, in a school yard like mentality.

  4. Professor Turley has done a great service with this article. Anyone who believes the fact checker should now realize that they lie and spin the news. Those bloggers using such fact checkers likewise lie and spin the news.

Never rely on fact checkers or quotes without access to the entire quote and context. Invariably, when coming from the left it will be a lie.

    1. -And never rely on polls. Selective pollsters, selective participants, selective wording of questions, and selective “sieves” in results reporting.

      1. Lin, you are wise indeed, but let me add, as long as Democrats have control over our process of electing our leaders never rely on honest elections.

End today’s Democrat Party. Do not vote for any Democrats, even for dog catcher and even when they have good qualities. They add to Democrat numbers and power.

    1. The substance of the criticism is irrelevant. The point is to manufacture a steady stream of negative criticism, whether legitimate or not, to influence public opinion. Some segment of the population is impressionable and easily swayed.

(Television executives have known this since forever. In the very early days of television, Fred Friendly and Edward Murrow single handedly turned public opinion against Joe McCarthy leading to his censure. Left-liberals used to brag about how Murrow took down McCarthy.)

Now consider that in presidential and other statewide elections in many states – probably around 15 states – the elections are so close that only 3-5% of votes separate the two candidates.

If the media manufactures a steady stream of negative criticism, legit or not, so that it causes a small percentage of voters inclined to vote one way flip to the other, or stay home, then it could change the election.

  5. North Korean media report that Dear Leader saved school children from an excaped bear at the State zoo. Our own State media do something the same.

  6. Babylon Bee-worthy. Yet millions of people watch … and believe unquestioningly. NBCs advocacy and shamelessness know no bounds.

  7. “[Y]ou might want to say ‘to have employees of United Airlines fly them home.’”

Fact Check: That’s only half-true. You did not “have employees . . .” The company scheduled them to do so. Turley as a parent trying, yet again, to take credit for someone else’s efforts.

  8. “Can you name 10 people in govt or politics held accountable for the longstanding, proven plot to try to frame a US president w/false info in the Trump-Russia collusion narrative?
    Can you name five?
It’s arguably one of the biggest crimes of our time with the bad actors still operating.”
    @SharylAttkisson

And the Democrat propaganda media, like NBC, are still lying to their viewers about Hillary’s Russia collusion hoax. No one has been held accountable. The media liars keep on lying.

  9. You are joke of a “news” organization. Please stop letting children do your alleged reporting.

  10. WTH is wrong with these people! If my family members were there I’d thank God for DeSantis cuz God knows Biden / Harris / Blinken aren’t getting it done! We still have Americans stuck in Afghanistan due to the ineptitude of the Biden Adm!

  11. DEM’s & Main Street Media, especially radical Left NBC/MSNBC MGMT/Staff, to go after another Potential President Canidate, like their doing to Trump, in order to bring them down vs running against Biden or another DEM. They will try to destroy any opposition to Biden/DEMS

  12. Quite the “Truth Warrior” that Peter Klein with his in-depth searing analysis. After this piece, he’s probably on the short list for the Dean of Journalism at Harvard. Thank you, Jonathan, for an excellent article.

  13. Independent news agencies my . They are nothing more than subsidiaries of the DNC.

    1. Follow the money.
The federal government doesn’t need to fund these biased media outlets via the Ad Council.
Due to the Ad Council’s historically close collaboration with the President of the United States and the federal government, it has been labeled by historian Robert Griffith as “little more than a domestic propaganda arm of the federal government.”
