Age of Rage: 26 Million Americans Believe Political Violence is Justified

A poll released by the University of Chicago via the Chicago Project on Security and Threats offers a chilling account of the growing radicalism in America, particularly after the second foiled assassination attempt of former president Donald Trump, the poll found that 26 million Americans believe “the use of force” is justified to keep Trump from regaining the presidency.

As discussed in my book, The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage,we have seen an increasing level of rage rhetoric in our political system. For some, violent language can become violent action. There is a normalization that can occur as extreme actions become more acceptable to more and more citizens:

“We are living in an age of rage. It permeates every aspect of our society and politics. Rage is liberating, even addictive. It allows us to say and do things that we would ordinarily avoid, even denounce in others. Rage is often found at the farthest extreme of reason. For those who agree with the underlying message, it is righteous and passionate. For those who disagree, it is dangerous and destabilizing.”

With the unrelenting claims of President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and others that democracy is about to die in America, some now feel a license to commit criminal acts in the name of “saving democracy.”

It is the ultimate form of self-delusion that one saves democracy by committing political violence against those with whom you disagree.

We have seen this radicalism spread in past years from higher education into society at large.

Years ago, many of us were shocked by the conduct of University of Missouri communications professor Melissa Click who directed a mob against a student journalist covering a Black Lives Matter event. Yet, Click was hired by Gonzaga University. Since that time, we have seen a steady stream of professors joining students in shouting down, committing property damageparticipating in riotsverbally attacking students, or even taking violent action in protests.

It is now common to hear inflammatory language from professors advocating “detonating white people,” denouncing policecalling for Republicans to suffer,  strangling police officerscelebrating the death of conservativescalling for the killing of Trump supporters, supporting the murder of conservative protesters and other outrageous statements.

At the University of Rhode Island, professor Erik Loomis defended the murder of a conservative protester and said that he saw “nothing wrong” with such acts of violence.

At the University of California Santa Barbara, professors actually rallied around feminist studies associate professor Mireille Miller-Young, who physically assaulted pro-life advocates and tore down their display.  Despite pleading guilty to criminal assault, she was not fired and received overwhelming support from the students and faculty. She was later honored as a model for women advocates.

At Hunter College in New York, Professor Shellyne Rodríguez was shown trashing a pro-life display of students.

She was captured on a videotape telling the students that “you’re not educating s–t […] This is f–king propaganda. What are you going to do, like, anti-trans next? This is bulls–t. This is violent. You’re triggering my students.”

Unlike the professor, the students remained calm and respectful. One even said “sorry” to the accusation that being pro-life was triggering for her students.

Rodríguez continued to rave, stating, “No you’re not — because you can’t even have a f–king baby. So you don’t even know what that is. Get this s–t the f–k out of here.” In an Instagram post, she is then shown trashing the table.

Hunter College, however, did not consider this unhinged attack to be sufficient to terminate Rodríguez.

It was only after she later chased reporters with a machete that the college fired Rodríguez. She was then hired by another college.

Another recent example comes from the State University of New York at Albany, where sociology professor Renee Overdyke shut down a pro-life display and then resisted arrest. One student is heard screaming, “She’s a [expletive] professor.” That of course is the point.

While Democratic leaders have condemned the second assassination attempt on Trump, they have continued the unhinged rhetoric of how this may be our last election and democracy is about to die in America.

At the same time, some leaders have allied themselves with violent groups.

We have continued to follow the attacks and arrests of Antifa followers across the country, including attacks on journalists.

Some Democrats have played a dangerous game in supporting or excusing the work of Antifa, one of the most violent anti-free speech groups in the world. Former Democratic National Committee deputy chair Keith Ellison, now the Minnesota attorney general, once said Antifa would “strike fear in the heart” of Trump. This was after Antifa had been involved in numerous acts of violence and its website was banned in Germany.

Ellison’s son, Minneapolis City Council member Jeremiah Ellison, declared his allegiance to Antifa in the heat of violent protests. During a prior hearing, Democratic senators refused to clearly denounce Antifa and falsely suggested that the far right was the primary cause of recent violence. Likewise, Joe Biden has dismissed objections to Antifa as just “an idea.”

These politicians are playing a dangerous game in toying with groups like Antifa, which will not stop at threatening their opponents. Politicians like Ellison could easily find themselves the next target as groups seek to “strike fear in the heart” of the establishment.

  1. Rhetoric is can be harmful and because of that it is often used as an advantage. Stoking rage is what the right loves to do. Just look at what is happening with Springfield Ohio. JD Vance continues to defend and spread the idea that Haitian immigrants are eating pets and causing all kinds of problems is having an effect on the town. The mayor and law enforcement have repeatedly debunked and debunked and debunked the claims made by the right and Vance. They don’t care if it’s not true. They want to stoke anger and resentment towards the legal immigrants residing there. In Springfield they are already increasing security around schools over threats to immigrants and the community over the pet eating claims. The town has been benefitting from the immigrants. They have been working and contributing to the town for years without a problem until Trump elevated the issue over a false rumor being spread by Vance and the right. Age of rage indeed. Turley is focusing on the wrong people.

The rhetoric is causing harm to the town and the right doesn’t care as long as they get to denigrate and blame the immigrants for problems not associated with the town. Trump is using rage to gain political capital and votes and Turley is blaming those on the left and democrats for doing something that he has no problem with when those on the right do exactly what accuses the left of doing.

    1. Is there a plethora of Antifa-like [mostly young, white males] characters just lookin,’ lovin’ for an opportunity to stir up the poison, seed unrest, violence, division, pitting residents against each other. What fun on a Saturday night! Oh, and the media coverage just pops the buttons off their shirts. Oh, and how media starts to assign blame! What a hoot!

    2. Rhetoric is can be harmful and because of that it is often used as an advantage.

      Peter, you do realize that:

      1. no one believes anything you say
      2. your credibility is so bad that not even a lifetime supply of Hunter Biden’s crack will animate your comments
      3. Regulars on here are concerned you killed off Svelaz and pulled a Haitian maneuver on him
      4. you were alot more fun when you used the sockpuppet Peter Shill

    3. Svelaz-George

You seem to have all the answers, until you are asked a question.

What would you say about the legality/morality of Ted Cruz saying:

“Muslims in this country are an existential threat to our Democracy and way of life”

“It’s on us to recognize the threat Muslims pose.”

“Does one of us [he and Omar] have to come out alive?”

“Muslims are a genuine threat to this nation …They are literally a threat to everything America stands for”

“Omar and the Muslims represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic … and that is a threat to this country.”

And here’s what should be your favorite

“Muslims are destructive to our democracy and …They have to be eliminated”

Obviously, these were not statements made by Ted Cruz. And they weren’t about Muslims. Maybe you’d like a shot at assigning the origination? Pro tip, some of them have been repeated over and over by several democrats.

Or maybe you like Rick Wilson’s honesty better “They’re still going to have to go out and put a bullet in Donald Trump.”

    4. Oh shut up. They were stating what people in the town claimed. My neighbor saw a group of illegals take a stolen goat and slaughter it in their backyard. You don’t think this happens? And you compare this as stoking the kind of hatred that makes people attempt murder. S@rew you.

    5. Actually, George, you are the one causing harm with your false statements about J.D. Vance. The Haitian immigrants are eating pets and more importantly, because I don’t care about pet consumption, they are causing enormous problems to the towns where they were shipped. George, act like a responsible citizen and think for yourself. Don’t just parrot the Harris Walz propaganda.

      1. Svelaz-George has become a useful idiot. If they can get him talking about cats and geese, he need not think about

        Kayla Hamilton
        Laken Riley
        Melissa Powell
        Jocelyn Nungaray
        Lizbeth Medina
        Rachel Morin
        Aiden Clark
        13yo girl in Queens
        Shannon Jungwirth
14 yo girl Ft Walton Beach
        15 yo girl Rockland, MA
11 yo girl Lake Worth, FL

Every single one of these were invited in by Biden/Harris. Here are a few more of the fine people Biden/Harris invited.

Victor Hernandez Martinez – Raped a woman in Texas (2021).
Edgar Alexander Ramos – Assaulted two women (2022).
Joel Bautista Diaz – Raped a minor in Pennsylvania (2023).
Jose Lopez Lopez – Charged with child rape in Florida (2021).
Luis Salmeron – Raped a woman in California (2022).
        Carlos A. Carrillo – Assaulted a 15-year-old (2021).

      2. The original source of the rumor admitted she posted it as a sarcastic joke. JD Vance used it to create the false narrative and Trump parroted it during the debate. The woman who made the claim is upset that her post got to where it is now.

The mayor, local law enforcement all have debunked the claim. The problem is all the gullible idiots and those fanning the rumors constantly are causing the town problems. The governor has had to deploy extra LEO’s due to threats to the legal immigrants in town. Schools have received bomb threats and all kinds of false claims and misinformation is leading Trump nut jobs to believe the immigrants are a threat to the town. It’s essentially how lynch mobs form. Except this is all online thru social media. This is how violence against immigrants occurred in the UK. JD Vance is stoking the trump yokels into blaming the immigrants.

        1. Svelaz, you sounded more intelligent when you plagiarized another’s work product. Go back to using other people for your words.

Along with being ignorant, a liar, and arrogant, Svelaz is also a plagiarist—hat tip to Davey.

Every word copied and pasted from HERE:
          https://fairtest.org/facts-whatwron-htm/

          1. Remember, George is the one who wanted everyone to think that he was so intelligent, pointing out the “Kruger-Dunning” syndrome, even though it is really the “Dunning-Kruger” tsk. tsk

        2. She said no such thing, clown. She merely admitted that she had no first-hand knowledge, and she regretted that it “blew up” this way. You and gigi just make things up to fill in the blanks, don’t you?

          1. She WHO ?

There are multiple police reports and multiple 9/11 calls.

Next. Saying that you do not have first hand knowledge is NOT the same as proving something false.

I have no first hand knowledge of the MLK assassination – does that means MLK was not assassinated ?

            Logic is not your forte.

This was a really stupid play on the part of the left – YOU made this flip against you.

YOU made people look deeply into this – which does not help you.

Many in Haitti practice Voodoo and that sometimes involves cat sacrifice.

Is that happening here ? I do not know, but I do know that the more people look into this the more that comes out that makes the left look bad.

You accused Trump of lying. But YOU ujmped to conclusions – and you made the logic error of trying to prove a negative.

        3. George, there are MANY sources for this – including video. There are 9/11 and police reports.

No the claim has not been “debunked” – what has been established is that city officials did not take the reports seriously.
That is not the same as they are flase.

Yes, Schools received bomb threats – From a FOREIGN ACTOR – either Russia or Iran – keep up.
The bomb threats are ACTUAL foreign election interferance to support HARRIS.

Should we convene a Special counsel to look into collusion with the Harris Campaign ?

No this is NOT how lynch mobs form – you are out of your gourd, you are way behind on the facts, and you keep buying sciff from well known liars.

You say “someone recanted” – Who ? Where are the facts ?

I have seen multiple videos of people giving reports tot he police. Are the reports lies ? I do not know – but there is no doubt they were made.
And that city officials know it. Further they have known it for a long time.

        4. George your TDS is overwhelming you – like other idiots on the left – you thought after Trump’s remarks at the debate that you finally had him – that it was over. Some left wing nut has a song put together in hours, left wing”their eating the cats” memes flowed.

          Trump was toast.

          Except that it backfired.
Vance and other Republicans have gotten hours of free media coverage of the problems with illegal immigration.
Trump supporters embraced and took ownership of the left wing nut memes.
You lost the meme war – big time.

You screwed up. You did not understand how this would play out.

What you thought was a disaster for Trump has turned into a disaster for democrats.

          Your wrong on the facts.

But honestly it does not matter.

First you stupidly are trying to prove a negative – that is unbeleivably hard.

Next while this may not be a huge problem – there is more than enough actual evidence For Trump and Vance to use this as a hook to discuss immigration.

You seem to thing the definition of false is anything you do not like.

While Trump/Vance have played you – very successfully.

This worked incredibly well for them because of YOUR response.

If you would have left it alone – it likely would have died and some independents would have questioned Trump.

But by putting the spotlight on it – you brought illegal immigration front and center.
And enough of the evidence has gotten out that indepents may decide it is not a huge story, they also do not think it was an outright lie.

      3. The pet thing is actual genius – especially the “their eating the cats” – it feeds into and obliterates the childless cat lady thing.

Better still Democrats actually thought making memes of this was a good idea – Trump memesters then OWNED them.

Absolutely this forced people to address the issues with illegal immigrants. And that is important.

But it also turned into something incredibly fun for Trump supporters.

The myriads of memes are Great.
        Cats with MAGA hats.

Trump leading armed bands of cats and dogs.

Something that Democrats – that George and Dennis think was a loss for Trump is a huge win.

Contra Dennis – the debate was a big win for Trump.

        His close was excellent.
Being ganged up on 3:1 makes him look STRONG – it is always a mistake to make your opponent look strong.

The Eating the cats thing was the moment the left thought Trump lost the election. But it turned into a big win for Trump.

    6. George – you are just unhappy because those of you on the left thought the “their eating the cats” meme would be a massive disaster for Trump – yet it has worked out so well that Conservative meme sters are reusing left wing memes.

      Hoist by your own petard.

Is there a massive problem with Haitians eating cats ? Probably not – but the MSM has been forced to discuss illegal immigration,
and while the problem may not be large – the claim that it is FALSE is absurdly stupid – you can not prove a negative, and worse still there is some evidence to support this.

    7. “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me”.

Did you ever have a childhood.

If you are hurt by the rhetoric of others – that is YOUR problem.

Stoking rage is what the left ALWAYS does.

Every republican presidential candidate in my lifetime has been called Hitler.

  2. If there were to be but one teeny, tiny itsy bitsy little thing that could tamp down potentially inciteful expression that inspires political violence, it is to
    STOP CALLING EVERYTHING “A LIE.”

In my book, a lie has but one definition: an untruth or false statement made with intent to deceive.
I regret that every single night, we witness national MSM (Peter Alexander, Kristen Welker, Terry Moran, Rachel Scott, Martha Raddatz, et al) talk to the world with phrases such as “Trump’s lies,” “false statement made by Trump,” “Trump repeats his lies about,” “Trump falsely claims that….” (was there mention of Biden’s, Harris’, Walz’ “lies?”) Harris STARTED the debate the other night, warning millions of viewers, including kids and teens, that Trump “is gonna lie.” Not a word of admonishment from the moderators.

I cannot fathom what goes through youngsters’ and teens’ minds when they are subject every day to hearing this, without any offering or explanation of WHY it is a “lie” or WHAT is actually the “truth.”

I truly suggest that MEDIA be forced to instead say, at a maximum, things like, “Trump’s unproven statement that…” or “Trump said xxxx but, SoAndSo responded by saying xxxxx.” –or how about “Trump has not yet offered anything to support his claim.”

We are not teaching JOY or TRUTH. We are teaching Hate.

    1. Lin,
      Great observation.
Hate is all they have. It is a powerful drug for many. Intoxicating. Some of them take sheer joy in rolling around in it. They have to resort to using emotion as their policies do not stand up to scrutiny. They are counting on mob rule to win the election. And if they dont win, look out for when the mob is denied victory.

    2. Here is another case in point of hate,
“I don’t hate Trump. I hate the people who vote for him. I think they are stupid. I do. I have no respect for them.”
      — Howard Stern
I dont care what the guy thinks. But it is not making the situation better by far.

      1. It seems that egomaniacs (stern, schumer, svelez, reid hoffman, etc) seem to have the biggest problem with trump – no surprise because he exposes those faux alphas as faux.

    3. They have practiced the art of character assassination to the extent of true assassination. A majority of people that are not aware of the truths, fully believe these propagandists. This IS the Marxists way of manipulating the narrative.

  3. I would like to see any one of these pussy TDS victims on here endure what Trump has endured. The left began with the Clinton/Obama smear machine at the correspondents dinner openly mocking Trump about his physical appearance. They then proceeded forward with a litany of abuses accusing the man of being a Dictator, an existential threat to America the likes we haven’t seen since Hitler, so many others and culminating with the calling to end him. They have gas lighted, persecuted him with the legal system, abused his Constitutional rights, deflected abuses of the 2020 election, they actively called for civil disobedience and practiced subversion of his duly elected seat as President of the United States. They expect Trump to stand silently by while they continue their long line of abuses, when they finally taunt him to anger, they then say he’s mentally unstable. Isn’t that the end result of what they have practiced, subverting, gaslighting, taunting, undercutting what everyone that put him in office in 2016? They decided that your vote didn’t matter.
I don’t think America is fooled by their Marxist tactics, I pray for our Nation.

    1. Traveler,
We have a friend and neighbor who when politics were brought up, as they usually did, we would ask her what she did not like about Trump’s policies. She could not make a informed opinion on any of them. As my wife and I would point out his policies, which we were clearly informed on, she generally would end the conversation with, “I just know I hate him!”
That seems to be the mentality of the Democrat platform. No substance. Just hate.
After a year or so of the Biden admin, she has voters remorse. This year, she has not mentioned Trump, Biden or Harris.
Her husband pulled me aside and said things have gotten a lot better since she turned off CNN.

      1. Upstate- It’s been an orchestrated smear from day one, American’s were brought up to believe what our news outlets told us to be true. That was pre Clinton/ Obama era. The Industrial complex owns it all now, we aren’t in Kansas anymore Dorothy!

    2. Traveler, agree it’s pathetic the type of abuse Trump has endured. Here’s a small sampling of the disgusting comments made about Trump after the correspondents dinner you mentioned.

Lindsey Graham: “Trump’s A Race-Baiting, Xenophobic, Religious Bigot…He Doesn’t Represent The Values That The Men And Women Who Wear The Uniform Are Fighting For.”

Ted Cruz: “This man is a pathological liar, he doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies…He’s a narcissist at a level I don’t think this country’s ever seen.”

JD Vance called Trump “a moral disaster…a total fraud.”

Mike Pence: “Donald Trump is pursuing and articulating an agenda that is at odds with the conservative agenda that we governed on during our four years. That’s why I cannot in good conscience endorse Donald Trump in this campaign.”

      Stay strong, Traveler.

      1. It’s not about Trump, it’s about our Constitutional Republic or a Marxist Socialist government run by a bunch of tyrannical moron despots. Putin is not fing around, Russia will respond as these idiots continue to push the envelope. It’s sickening to see them so clearly and watch while the idiots Chorus their corruption.
Thank you! Strong as steel here!

      2. Funny you list the RINO military industrial complex tools. Lindsey Graham and McStain as I recall met with the Terrorists that HRC was covertly sending arms to in Libya. Ted Cruz comments I would imagine were to combat DJT as a contender in the upcoming presidential primary election 2016. Mike Pence…I don’t think that one is worth discussing, he knows it was a rigged election, I still believe he was the leaking inside the Capitol. Funny though, 2 of the 3 are supporting him as is Vance. Like Iron sharpens steel so shall one man make another strong.

    3. There is no such thing as TDS on the left. Trump caused every single one of his problems…, and clearly you can’t get his cock out of your mouth long enough to see it.

  4. No one is surprised that Jonathan Turley completely ignores colleges & schools in Springfield, Ohio receiving 33 separate bomb threats after Trump & JD Vance repeatedly lied about Haitians eating dogs, cats & geese. Ohio’s Republican Governor, Mike Dewine emphatically denied any credible reports to support Trump & Vance’s false claims: “I want to make that very, very clear. None of these had any validity at all.”

Professor Turley presumably isn’t bothered by Trump repeatedly callling Biden & Harris a threat to democracy & claiming “If we don’t win this election, I don’t think you’re going to have another election in this country…This country is finished if we don’t win this election.”

The Age of Rage Professor clearly excels at preaching to the choir.

    1. How many primary votes did Harris get again? How many interviews has the lead candidate for the Socialist Party done to defend or explain her record? How many times has she flip flopped on her own record of failed accomplishments? How many times has Walz sung the stolen valor song? How many business burned while Walz diddled his weapon of war?
      Give us a break!

    2. “colleges & schools in Springfield, Ohio receiving 33 separate bomb threats after Trump & JD Vance repeatedly lied about Haitians eating dogs, cats & geese. ”

All 33 of which have definitively been shown to be HOAXES, you IQ deprived drool-bomber.
Bomb Threats Used By Media To Excuse Second Trump Assassination Attempt Have No ‘Validity At All’
      https://thefederalist.com/2024/09/17/bomb-threats-used-by-media-to-excuse-second-trump-assassination-attempt-have-no-validity-at-all/
‘But Republican Gov. Mike DeWine confirmed Monday that all 33 bomb threats were hoaxes.
“Thirty-three threats; 33 hoaxes,” DeWine said. “None of these had any validity at all.”’

      1. Thanks for verifying Governor Mike DeWine’s credibility. Here’s what he said about Trump’s repeated claims that Haitians were eating dogs, cats & geese.

DeWine: “I think these discussions about Haitians eating dogs and cats and other things needs to stop. This discussion about Haitians’ eating dogs is just not helpful. And again, these people are here legally. They’re here legally, and they want to work, and they are, in fact, working. And when you talk to the employers, what the employers tell you is, you know, we don’t know what we would do without them. They are working, and they’re working very hard.”

Wholeheatedly agree Governor DeWine is Ohio’s most credible soure.

        1. “Thanks for verifying Governor Mike DeWine’s credibility”
thanks for copycatting other commenter’s style. It gives you away.

      1. Hezbollah reported some 75 bomb threats yesterday, they were notified by pagers 😂😂

  5. A brief comment on demographics. In all human populations ~4% are born on the psychopathic spectrum. These kids and adults are wired up different from the majority of us, lacking empathy, actually amused by thwarting/bullying others, and feeling absolutely no guilt or remorse while constantly trying to manipulate and vex “normies”. If you know who is in our prisons, it’s heavily weighted toward failed psychopaths, over 50%. Psychopaths are highly solipsistic — they equate “good” with “good for self”.

Therefore, it stands to reason that these anti-social psychos are way overrepresented in the 26 million. We shouldn’t be surprised — it’s just an aspect of population demographics. These personality types are not trustworthy, and thus would have a terrible time trying to organize into a cohesive fighting force with leadership structure.

If the craziest of these were to attempt an armed revolt in the US, they would be crushed by law enforcement within the first 24 hrs. And be sure, only the craziest would take up armed rebellion, way too few to matter.

  6. Jonathan: The latest survey by Prof. Pape at the U of C is not surprising. It showed 18 million US adults support the use of force to restore DJT to power. 26 million say violence would be justified to prevent that. What is interesting about the survey is that 183 million oppose the use of violence to restore DJT to power. The Q is who is actually committing acts of violence?

Late last year Pape gave an interview to SLATE. In the interview Pape said this: “What we see in actual violent attacks in the last several years is more violent attacks that are occurring by right-wing perpetrators than left-wing perpetrators. There are some on the left wing, by the way, but it’s mostly been on the right. And we also see that we have incendiary , violent rhetoric by Donald Trump that is dovetailing with violent support for Donald Trump. But what has Joe Biden’s rhetoric been like? It’s not been incendiary. It’s been the opposite. It’s been extremely calming”. (SLATE, 10/23/23) Pape was specifically referring to the attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband, the mass killing of Buffalo shoppers by a racist and Jan. 6 when DJT’s supporters tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power through violence… all violence encouraged by DJT because of his incendiary rhetoric.

Neither Pres. Biden nor Kamala Harris have encouraged political violence. They have condemned it. When they talk about “saving Democracy” it’s about encouraging voters to go to the polls in November to reject DJT’s attempt to regain power and be a “dictator” from day one. Nothing that Biden/Harris have said could be interpreted as “a license to commit criminal acts” as you allege.

    1. Neither has Trump encouraged political violence. Considering how strong the incentive is to assassinate him, he too for sure condemns it. When Trump talks about “saving Democracy” it’s about encouraging voters to go to the polls in November to reject the continuation of the last four years. Nothing that Trump has said could be interpreted as “a license to commit criminal acts.” You should understand this is a matter of perspective, and just how much yours needs moderation.

      1. Ron A. Hoffman,
I find your “You should understand this is a matter of perspective, and just how much yours needs moderation.” rather ironic when addressing a Democrat who is in all favor censorship and . . . “moderation,” in the name of democracy.

    2. Thank you for confirming (without apparently realizing) that there are 8 MILLION MORE people who think violence is justified to prevent Trump’s presidency, than those who think it is justified to restore him:
      Here is the verbatim finding:

“Finding #1: More Support for Violence Against Trump than to Restore Trump.”
It is easy to find, Dennis. Page 4. “https://d3qi0qp55mx5f5.cloudfront.net/cpost/i/docs/June_2024_CPOST_Survey_Report.pdf?mtime=1720925000
Bottom line: What it means Dennis is that 10% of surveyed think violence is justified to prevent Trump from being president,
only 6.9% think violence is justified to restore him to the presidency.

    3. Dennis McInliar said on this very blog:

Democrats support violence when the cause is right.

What could be a better cause than “eliminating” an “existential threat” to “our way of life”?

  7. If I understand the study, this ass polled 2,000 people and then projected the data over the entire population of the United States, estimated at 254 million. This is one of the stupidest premises I have ever seen concocted by a “Phd”

    1. Actually, 2,000 is a pretty good sample, more than most political polls that are around 1200 to 1500–which generally is considered good sample to reduce the margin of error.

      1. Depending upon the variation in sampling. If you sample 2000 SanFrancisco voters, your results are skewed. The sample would have to be from an equal distribution of districts with an equal distribution of party affiliation. Fixed it for you Mr. Outlier…

    2. The subsampling number is actually legit, leaving a margin of error of 2.2%.

What’s dumb is taking what people say on an anonymous survey as the gospel truth. Daniel Kohenen and Amos Tversky (cognitive scientists) showed in the 1980s that, unless the person asked their “opinion” has some stake in the outcome (skin in the game), their “opinion” is not all that predictive of how they would actually behave.

      1. “What’s dumb is taking what people say on an anonymous survey as the gospel truth”

Agreed, but also keep in mind that, all else equal, no assumption can be made about the trajectory of the deviation from the result. In other, words, there could have been fewer respondents who actually approve of political violence to stymie Trump than the polled results show, but, all else equal, there could just as easily have been more.

  8. VDH in fine style today:

Here is just today’s example of the usual left-wing daily vitriol equating Trump with some sort of existential enemy that must be somehow stopped—expressed on both television and social media:

After the would-be assassination attempt, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York posted this: “Extreme MAGA Republicans are the party of a national abortion ban and Trump’s Project 2025. We must stop them.”

Jeffries is spreading untruths: Trump has never supported a national abortion ban and has consistently distanced himself from The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025. And after such deliberately lying, what exactly does the House minority leader mean by “We must stop them”?

And after Sunday’s failed assassination attempt, Rachel Vindman, wife of Alexander Vindman of Trump’s first impeachment notoriety, and sister-in-law to current congressional candidate Eugene Vindman, D-Va., posted, “No ears were harmed. Carry on with your Sunday afternoon.”

What does Ms. Vindman mean? Another weekend, just another attempt to kill Trump, so no big deal?

And also, on MSNBC, Democratic activist the Rev. Jacqui Lewis ranted (to the silence of the network’s host, Jonathan Capehart), “Let’s not pretend that Donald Trump isn’t exactly like Mussolini, exactly like Hitler … . You nice Christians, kind, loving Jewish people … we’re not these people. We’re not these people. And we’re not going to get what we want if we elect this fascist, authoritarian weasel.”

So, what does Lewis suggest to Americans that they do with such a “Hitlerian weasel”?

And we should remind Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden—for yet the nth time—that Trump did not call for a “bloodbath” if he lost in November. (He was talking about the economic consequences to the U.S. automobile industry of mandating electric vehicles, and outsourcing automobile plants and jobs to Mexico.)

Nor did he claim that white supremacists were “good people” at Charlottesville, Virginia—but, as the liberal Snopes fact-checked, just the opposite: “I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally.”

These serial assassination attempts, unfortunately, occur in a weary context of Russian collusion, laptop disinformation, state ballot removal, and lawfare. And they are starting to reflect a larger environment of justifying extralegal means to achieve the ends of ending Trump’s presidency and later reelection by any means necessary.

    1. Darren,
They are going to have a really bad day when they discover some of us are guardian dogs among the sheep.

      1. They are going to have a really bad day when they discover some of us are guardian dogs among the sheep.

There’s a reason the soy boys and tough guys of Antifa and Black Liars & Marxists gave Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, etc a pass despite it being a relatively short drive from Seattle, Portland, Spokane, etc. In those states, the sheep mostly look like the guardian dogs.

As the observation goes; “Be a hero in your world; die in ours”.

Trying that tough guy mob violence in states like this, where citizens don’t fear being arrested as the bad guy when they use a firearm to take the fight out of a violent criminal who is a threat… and it probably won’t end well for those who decide to try it in states like these.

  9. This issue harkens back many years and in my opinion is the outcome of extremely poor educators from K-12 and the near sightedness of the bureaus of education federal, state and local, and finally unionization of all levels of the education agencies. The education establishment has been radicalized to believe Socialism through tyranny is apropos to achieve their goals. Their product is ill-educated citizens believing outlandish ideas that Socialism is worthy of abandonment of a Republic. They have attacked and undermined the nations agreed upon documents swaying the interpretations to new meaning never seen before, where Men are Women- just because or a litany of other meanings.

    1. George W,
      Great comment!
Where Men are Women, Women are birthing or chest feeding persons, exercise is a gateway to white supremacy, eating healthy is racist and to be just a man is toxic.
I would be a toxic man any day.

      1. “exercise is a gateway to white supremacy, eating healthy is racist”

In the results discussion after a recent physical exam, my physician seemed to be suggesting that I should become more of a racist white supremacist.

  10. While the University of Chicago found 26 million adults (10%) supportive of violence to [prevent] Trump from becoming president, another 58 million (22.6%) are undecided. Fortunately, for as long as good fortune may last, the survey also found that 171 million adults (66.1%) disagree. Twenty-six million is an alarming number but so is 18 million who support violence to [restore] Trump to the presidency. Clearly, we have entered a danger zone that threatens American civility. If it was a sporting contest, the referees would all be throwing their flags demanding everyone return to their benches for a time out to check their emotions and get their heads back on straight.

    1. Right, make jokes when you’ve compromised. Men are marrying men and women are pregnant people. You have no morals, principles, laws at all. Bankrupt, done.

      Right, fair elections. Sure. Psychos

  11. How amazing and unsurprising that Turley only finds approval for violence among non-Trump cultists. Turley: did you forget that it was Trump who went on “Stop the Steal” tours to rile up his devotees to try to stop Congress from certifying Biden’s victory–all based on the lie that he really won–when he didn’t? In today’s NYT, Trump blames Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the two incidents–the lastest at this golf club. (I won’t call it an assassination attempt, as Routh never fired a shot). Trump is quoted as saying: “He believed the rhetoric of Biden and Harris and he acted on it”–this lie was broadcast by your employer, Turley. He went on: “Their rhetoric is causing me to get shot at, when I am the one who is going to save the country and they are the ones that are destroying the country–both from the inside and out.”

Now, what have Harris and/or Biden said about Trump that could conceivably be more provocative of potential violence? Trump complains about Harris, Biden and Democrats saying he is a threat to democracy–BECAUSE HE IS. Trump is the one who tried to overturn a free and fair election in 2020. He sat by for over 3 hours watching his supporters smash windows and doors, batter police officers and invade the Capitol–ignoring calls from family and staff to call them off. He KNEW they were hunting for Pence and Pelosi, intent on hurting or killing them. It was only after it was clear that Pence was safe and couldn’t be coaxed into leaving the Capitol complex until he accepted the certified votes that Trump called off the insurrectionists–telling them he “loved” them. It was a Trump supporter who invaded Nancy Pelosi’s home and assaulted her husband. He was intent on kidnapping Pelosi and conducting some kind of trial. Trump is the one who got supporters to falsify Electoral College documents, and who tried to get Secretaries of State to “find” votes he didn’t get. Trump is the one who spread lies about our elections being rigged–as he is doing right now–even after Chris Krebs, Trump’s own head of Cybersecurity, informed Trump that 2020 was tshe most-secure election in history. So, Trump fired Krebs. According to Project 2025, Republicans will attempt to create an imperial presidency with Trump in charge of the DOJ, FBI and all federal agencies. They plan to fire 50,000 civil service employees and replace them with Trump syncophants who will tell whatever lies and do whatever Trump says. The wealthy will get tax cuts, Medicare and Social Security recipients will get benefit cuts, abortions will be banned and school lunch and SNAP benefits curtailed. Project 2025 is described as a playbook for the “next Republican President”. It is wildly unpopular, so Trump lies about knowing what it says or implementing it. Trump has promised to use the DOJ and FBI to go after his perceived enemies. Trump doesn’t understand, or doesn’t care, that the purpose of the DOJ and FBI is to enforce the laws on behalf of the American people–not as a tool for his ego. These are all clear and present dangers to democracy–and it is not rhetoric to say so.

Trump also claims that the fact that no one has taken a shot at either Biden or Harris proves that they are behind the two incidents. The NYT piece says” “At the heart of today’s eruption of political violence is Mr. Trump, a figure who seems to inspire people to make threats or take actions both for him and against him. He has long favored the language of violence in his political discourse, encouraging supporters to beat up hecklers, threatening to shoot looters and undocumented migrants, mocking a near fatal attack on the husband of the Democratic House speaker and suggesting that a general he deemed disloyal be executed.” Gee, Turley, how did you miss all of this?

    1. Gigi: I only read your very first and very last (ending) sentences in your whole screed. I can close my eyes and recite the very very very redundant remainder.

I regret that you fail to comprehend the difference between exercising legal/topic opinion- and engaging in screeching empty vitriol, as in, hateful, vengeful, acerbic, retaliatory, ugly, acrid, and inciteful rhetoric displayed here on a daily basis, such as “fat hog,” “bald, fat, ugly,” “orange hog,” “orange pig,” “MAGAts, “lies,” “lies,” and “lies,” etc.
After daily use of JT’s platform, you constantly insult him, as in your comment yesterday, “…even more so coming from someone who sells himself as a law professor.”
Are you trying to sell yourself as an educated, ethical, knowledgeable contributor here?
Pray, tell us Gigi, what do your comments contribute to this platform? Especially to young law students who naturally and correctly respect JT? What are you showing them?
This is not a blog to be used to air your unpopularity or retaliation.
Thanking you in advance, yours truly, lin.

        1. Burn ointment aisle 9, 3rd degree call 911. Go to the corner and stand facing the wall GiGi!

Not a lawyer but stayed at a Holiday Inn Express!
          Thank you lin!

          1. Traveler: yeah, tell us please, what FACTS I got wrong? Attacking me does not make what I wrote untrue. You don’t seem to understand this—but then, again, you watch MAGA media and that’s what they do.

            1. Gigenius

You got the fatc that you are an attorney wrong. How di you do that?

Have you ALWAYS been a patholiogical liar, or did it just start in 2016?

            2. Virginia
I rarely read your rantings, the TDS overshadows any scrap of a factoid as minuscule as it may be that you may include in your deranged ill informed ramblings. You forget, American people don’t just watch the DnC propaganda networks anymore. This is especially true after watching what they did to us during Covid, hopefully you’re fully vaccinated and boosted!
Now, go back to your corner, order up a basket of cat legs and enjoy, you are dismissed for the liar you are.

      1. lin: Every word that I wrote about Trump is TRUE–and you know it. There’s nothing vitriolic about pointing out that Trump uttered the Big Lie that resulted in his fans storming the Capitol, battering police officers, damaging property and hunting for the VP and Speaker of the House, intent on harming or killing them. I didn’t call Trump a single name–but i did point out that the candidate who not only called for violence in 2020 was Trump–“fight like hell or you’re not going to have a country any more”–telling supporters to come to the Capitol on January 6–“it will be wild” and that he continues to foment violence by lying about Haitians eating household pets, about post-birth abortion, and about Biden and Harris being responsible for the two incidents because they are harming the country but he’s trying to save it. Biden/Harris rescued America from the recession caused by Trump and his utter incompetence in handling COVID and his stupid trade war. It appears that the person arrested for the latest incident is a fervent supporter of Ukraine, which means that he knows Trump would cut off all aid to Ukraine to help Putin out. Accusing Biden or Harris of being responsible for his actions is outrageously untrue.

YOU fail to accept provable facts, and, just like your hero and the MAGA media that support him, you attack people who say things that prove his unfitness to be the leader of the free world. When did either Biden or Harris encourage their supporters to beat up hecklers, or lie about migrants stealing and eating pets, or doctors killing healthy newborn infants, or calling migrants “criminals, vermin, animals, murderers and rapists”? When did they lie about other countries emptying their prisons and mental hospitals? When did any of their rhetoric result in schools and hospitals needing to be closed and migrant families afraid to go outside because gullible people believed Trump’s and Vance’s lies that they continue to double down on? When did either Harris or Biden encourage the support of people like The Proud Boys, the 3%ers and other racist groups?

You speak of “young law students”that you think somehouw “naturally and correctly respect JT”. I have news for you, lin, each of these students is a college graduate. Many of them have degrees in fields like political science. Being such, they would be able to recognize purchased punditry when they see it. They also should be able to figure out that since going on the Fox payroll, Turley saves his criticism for Democrats and ignores egregious conduct and lying by Trump. When I was a law student, we all knew clearly which professors were extreme conservatives and which were not, and I, for one, avoided the classes of the radical conservatives. Trump IS a liar and a sociopath.

lin: you have alluded to being a guest at MAL and knowing Turmp. Pray tell, favor us with your association with him.

        1. Gigi: You are apparently confusing me with someone else. (“guest at MAL; knowing Trump”?????) Nada. not me.
As you like to tell others, please cite your source.

By the way, I said not a word about whether Trump’s statements were true or false–which is virtually the entirety of your response. –Indeed, what does ““fat hog,” “bald, fat, ugly,” “orange hog,” “orange pig,” “MAGAts” have to do with the veracity of Trump’s statements? A jury (and a judge) would have so much fun with you.

Yes, “young law students.” You perhaps are familiar with the term, “young adults?” And did you know that some states (including the YUGE state of California) require only require you to be older than 18, with a minimum of 2 years’ college, to take the bar exam? —Same for admission to law school.— A jury (and a judge) would have so much fun with you.

Finally, speaking of reading comprehension, did you notice that I said “young law students,” -I did NOT say “young law school students,” even though some could be as young as 18. Can you comprehend the difference Gigi? A jury (and a judge) would have so much fun with you.

Jonathan Turley’s blog is read by a massive, global viewership, including jurists, lawyers, law students, high school students, and members of the public-at-large. For those interested in law, I regret that some may have been disenchanted, discouraged, or turned off by the likes of your comments. Hell hath no fury like a rattled Gigi.

No more of your aggressive nonsense, please and thank you in advance. yours truly, lin

            1. Lin. Turley doesn’t teach in California. Do you really believe that law students aren’t wise enough to see Turley’s biased punditry for what it is? Do you think that law students believe that Haitians are stealing household pets and eating them—or that they think it’s normal and acceptable for a presidential candidate to spread this lie?Just another effort to normalize Trump and MAGA.

              1. did you lie about Lin saying she knew Trump and visited MAL?
did you lie about the Arlington story?
Did you lie about Trump’s court “losses?”
Yours are intentional lies, not misunderstandings.

          1. Lin : You seem to forget that Trump claims to be a “perfect human specimen”—a “very stable genius in astonishingly good health”; that he lies about his height and weight, that he mocks handicapped people, that he has called women “fat pigs “ and other insulting things, that he recently claimed he was better-looking than Kamala Harris, and that he also mocked world leaders—“little rocket man.”

It is an observable fact that Trump is morbidly obese—he has several chins, and is thick in the waist and hips— yet he insults others. Therefore, since Trump has set the tone by insulting people, it’s only fair game to respond in kind. There has never been a presidential candidate in our history who has behaved like Trump—not just constantly lying, cheating to get in office, starting an insurrection and being criminally indicted and convicted, but who dishes out childish insults against his opponents and world leaders.

He has now put the citizens of Springfield Ohio in danger by falsely accusing Haitian immigrants of being illegal and stealing and eating people’s pets. He refuses to back down even though there’s no evidence and his lies are hurting people. Schools and hospitals are closed and Haitians are living in fear. That’s just wrong.

Pointing out these facts is not engaging in aggressive nonsense. I’m not the problem.

            1. funny how you always calm down after Lin and others call you out. You didn’t address any of the things she raised. Oh, I take that back. you said “Turley doesn’t teach in California.” Yeah, so what, his audience AND classes are not limited to students from DC, idiot.

        2. Gigenius

What happened to Trump’s trade war? How many of his tariffs are still in effect and how many did Biden add?

    2. Gigenius

Why did you lie on this blog and say that you were an experienced attorney.

Do you have any remorse for lying about that?

        1. “prove I am NOT an attorney.”

          Gigenius

I dont need to. You prove it every day.

You also claimed to be a nurse. another lie.

And to have aunt/uncle in Arlington, another lie.

Careful what you wish for. Remember the last lie you denied, and how I proved it…

Are you now doubling down on your lie that you are an attorney? Is that it?

          1. Wait.

NUTCHACHACHA wrote that she was a nurse a very long time ago.

            Did she/he/it/they/them/weirdo take it back?

          2. The only thing you prove is that you are a MAGA disciple with OCD—you can’t respond to facts that make your hero look bad so you obsessively attack those who criticize him—often using junior high level childish insults.

Article 1, Section 8, provides Congress the power to tax for ONLY debt, defense, and “…general (all, the whole) Welfare…,” omitting and, thereby, excluding any power to tax for individual Welfare, specific Welfare, particular Welfare, favor or charity. The same article enumerates and provides Congress the power to regulate ONLY the Value of money, Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian Tribes, and land and naval Forces. Additionally, the 5th Amendment right to private property was initially qualified by the Framers and is, therefore, absolute, allowing no further qualification, and allowing ONLY the owner the power to “claim and exercise” dominion over private property.

Government exists, under the Constitution and Bill of Rights, to provide maximal freedom to individuals while government is severely limited and restricted to merely facilitating that maximal freedom of individuals through the provision of security and infrastructure.

Karl Marx wrote the Communist Manifesto 59 years after the adoption of the Constitution because none of the principles of the Communist Manifesto were in the Constitution. Had the principles of the Communist Manifesto been in the Constitution, Karl Marx would have had no reason to write the Communist Manifesto. The principles of the Communist Manifesto were not in the Constitution then and the principles of the Communist Manifesto are not in the Constitution now.

    It is beyond time, men.

    1. The principles of the Communist Manifesto are not in the Constitution. That is absolutely correct. The principles of the Bible are also not in the Constitution. Visit inmates in prison? Sell your possessions and give the money to poor? Take immigrants into your home? F*ck that sh!t. Jesus was all about taking care of number 1.

      1. You forgot the freedom of religion.

Other than that, you make no sense.

You contradict yourself; it’s impossible to continue taking immigrants into your home as it will soon be full; then what?

  13. Keep it up Sir. We need to advocate Free Speech, more now than ever before. Lets hope Trump wins with a massive mandate. Facebook needs to be disciplined.

    1. “Facebook needs to be disciplined.”

Are you restricting the reason for that belief to Futzerberg bending the knee to the Demoncrats during campaigning for the last election? Have you seen this story that indicates exactly how well he has learned his lesson (censoring foreign speech is politically safer, but no less reprehensible).

    1. Anonymous, as usual you left out the part that Trumps wives were legal immigrants. No one is saying that all immigration is a bad thing. The days of immigrants picking the crops is long gone because the picking of the crops is being done with machinery. How do you think like you think?

Actually, automation in ag is a big industry. There is a farm not far from me who milking is done all by robots.
