Gallup: Over 80 Percent of Americans Support Voter ID and Proof of Citizenship Laws

This week, I wrote about polls that show the public is not buying the apocalyptic predictions of the imminent death of democracy unless Kamala Harris is elected president. Now, a new poll shatters another main talking point of pundits and the press. Democratic candidates, including Vice President Harris, have denounced voter identification laws as “Jim Crow 2.0” attacks on voters. A majority of voters have long supported these laws. According to a new Gallup poll, that majority is now a supermajority.

Despite unrelenting attacks on these laws in the media, eight in ten Americans now support both laws:

With less than two weeks to go in the presidential campaign and voting already underway in many states, 76% of U.S. adults favor the concept of early voting. Two other election law policies are supported by even more Americans — requiring photo identification to vote (84%) and providing proof of citizenship when registering to vote for the first time (83%). …

Majorities of Americans favor a range of election law policies that expand voters’ access to the ballot box, including early voting, automatic voter registration, and sending absentee ballot applications to all eligible voters. They also broadly support measures to limit fraud and ensure election integrity, including requiring photo identification to vote and providing proof of citizenship when first registering to vote.

There are few major political issues today that could show this type of overwhelming support, including from Democrats. Yet, both the Democratic politicians and pundits continue to denounce these laws.  Indeed, the campaign against Georgia resulted in their losing the All-Star Game and its economic benefits. Yet, under these laws, Georgia is setting records in the turnout of voters.

In the meantime, the Biden Administration is continuing to oppose and legally challenge efforts of states like Virginia to remove alleged non-citizens from their voting rolls.

  1. Dear Mr. Turley, in my small rural farming community, and although everyone pretty much knows each other, I have to show my driver’s license each time I have voted here. This does not offend anyone here. It is a measure of safety. Two prominent election deniers, Hillary Clinton and Stacy Abrams had fits over this. Showing identification helps keep our elections safe. Like others mentioned here many other countries have had this requirement for years.

  2. You’re a fascist if you want voter ID. The Democrats told us that Reagan, Goldwater, Romney, Ford and Nixon were all fascist. Out of desperation they now trot out the fascist card for Donald Trump and tell us that he will hunt all of us down like Hitler. It’s as predictable as the sun coming up in the morning. If you can’t win on policy just stir up some fear. Their going to put you all back in chains comes to mind. When all else fails the go to modus operandi is always fascism and racism. And they say Trump says bad things about people. No kidding. No joke.

  3. Personally, I would like to see more development of biometric fingerprint ID, in lieu of voter photo ID. God knows, everyone seems to be able to hack our DOBs, SSNs, addresses, and photo IDs these days!
The last I looked at it a few years ago, ultrasonic fingerprint scans were deemed far superior to other forms of personal ID. Currently, the biggest drawback is the potential for unauthorized access and/or biometric data theft and manipulation, (a simple example, e.g., the electronic replacement of a differently-named person to the correlative fingerprint. But to make a dent in recorded vote totals, I would surmise that would take a great deal of manipulation, possibly quite lower breaches than fake photo IDs, etc. Voting precincts can access, control, and store data only relative to their own registered voters. The issue then becomes proper chain of custody all the way up to national tolls.
The weaknesses of theft or spoofing can be combatted with liveness scans and multifactor scanning, such as random biometric fingerprint combined with with facial ID, etc.
    Next generation ID (NGI)!!!

  4. 80% want voter ID? And a majority want the end of Daylight Savings?

“Hey, Buddy, I’m a Congressman [or Senator]. I didn’t go to the trouble of getting elected so as to do something that you might want. This job is all about what I want, and I don’t care for what you want.”

  5. Now we have a super majority who wants voter ID. Now, introduce laws to that effect and let us see who votes for it and who votes against it.

  6. Re:”Democratic candidates, including Vice President Harris, have denounced voter identification laws as “Jim Crow 2.0” attacks on voters.” Bullox!! Nothing but a long standing guise for using racial discrimination as a tool to abuse and control the electoral process. The minute ‘they’ cry ‘black oppression’, which they themselves have been exercising for decades, everyone soils their Depends and retreats to clean up. Time to call a spade a spade and break the cycle for good…and yes…that was by intent.

  7. Democrats care about voting rights as much as they care about freedom of speech.

The outcome of this election was always going to end up in front of a judge. What the Democrats truly care about is maintaining a reasonable explanation for an otherwise unreasonable “record-setting” voter turnout. One that completely favors Harris and defies statistical probability.

    1. Stop with the prebuttal. The result will be based on an accurate voting process, armed with layer upon layer of fraud detection.

Those who believe the vote will be legitimate if Trump wins, and “rigged” if he loses, live in an ethical cesspool where facts and honesty don’t matter at all, just comforting narratives and power.

I trust the People to elect the next President. I trust our wisdom. I’ll support and work with whoever wins. And by “work with”, I mean blocking any overreaches of Presidential power, because I see in both candidates that propensity. The Republic will endure either way, because the People are much smarter than the leaders.

      1. LMAO Pea Brain in California seems to think she has some power to “block” anything.

      2. Stop with the prebuttal.

Do you mean like the Democratic party’s relentless fearmongering over what another Trump presidency will mean to the survival of the human race? You know, he’s fascist, he will be a dictator, use the military against his opponents, put people in concentration camps, destroy democracy, and on and on. That kind of prebuttal? GFY!

      3. pbinca showed up in her/its/their sheep’s clothing Those who believe the vote will be legitimate if Trump wins, and “rigged” if he loses, live in an ethical cesspool

Anyone surprised that you didn’t write: “Those who believe the vote will be legitimate if wins, and “rigged” if they lose, live in an ethical cesspool”?

Democrats were howling the Republican won by rigging the election was going on long before they added Trump to the list of Republicans they claimed rigged the election. Clinton still claims that Russia helped Trump win the 2016 election – just like she paid the Russian spy to write in her illegal “Trump-Russia Dossier” to use as her proof.

They have been doing it long before you showed up here to post your bullshyte in hopes of passing as an impartial commentator.

Go on – tell us again how The Big Lie wasn’t Biden/Harris/the DNC saying the 2020 election was the most transparent and fairest election in history.

But instead Trump saying it was rigged by Democrat lawyers changing election laws unlawfully in critical states, hundreds of millions of Zuckerbucks injected into reliable Democrat voting districts to get out the Democrat votes, and the FBI and Biden bureaucrats hiding the Biden Bribery Laptop and preventing news media from reporting news on Biden Bribery that would have changed the election.

One thing about Dennis and Gigi, pbinica: they don’t attempt to pretend they’re honest commentators rather than party apparatchiks promoting Democrat lies and defenses.

Now, do what Dennis does: run away to drop another deuce as a comment another day.

  8. As so often seems to occur in polls the polled appear to be schizophrenic. They favor both “automatic registration” and proof of citizenship when first registering.

    1. “the polled appear to be schizophrenic”

Polling (particularly poll design and audience selection) is a demanding art, usually presented with pretensions of science. In many cases, it isn’t even very good art. For example, I read Just The News every day, and for the most part, like the content I find there, and agree with much of it. JTN has a few significant faults, but is an order of magnitude better than MSM “news”. JTN usually publishes at least one new poll daily. It also appears to have a pretty stable readership that has consistent political beliefs. However, I have observed that a large fraction (my SWAG is 40 – 50%) will select the first option in every JTN poll, no matter what positions or beliefs that option might support. I suspect that this is a variant on confirmation bias – readers are assuming that JTN will list options in order of conformance to its prevailing editorial bias, which they generally agree with. That makes their polls worthless as an indicator of the opinions of their readers on specific questions; even worse, it is ripe for manipulation to produce misleading results. I have seen no indication that such abuse is happening, but it potentially could.

  9. If 80% of “We The People” want voter ID’, why/how are the elected officials (our public servants) not giving us the legislation that we want? Just how does that happen?

    1. The Democratic socialistic/communistic dynasty in Washington wants to have complete control of the elections. For how many years did the states run and control the elections?

      1. The states still run federal elections. It’s in the Constitution. The main thing is to keep federal officials as far away from control over these elections as possible.

        1. The statement abut it being in the constitution is patently wrong. Read Article 1 Section 4. Under that article both the states and the federal government have joint responsibility in that area and if Congress passes a law on that it under the Constitution trumps state laws. John Howard Wilhelm,

          1. As much as Pea brain in California again ran her ignorant mouth and said something stupid, your correction was inadequate as well. Article 1, section 4 has NOTHING to do with Presidential elections.

        2. A1s4: “The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations”

          Back to the books, Pbinca.

          1. Pea brain in California is now averaging 1.6 ignorant/false statements per day, over the last 2 months. The rate seems to be increasing the closer Trump gets to being elected.

        3. pbinca posted: The states still run federal elections. It’s in the Constitution.

Your fellow Democrats disagree. They claim that their lawyers like Mark Elias run elections by going to critical states and going shopping to find state judges and bureaucrats to change those states’ election laws. Despite the Constitution specifically saying only the elected legislatures of those states can change the state’s election laws.

Like Mark Elias (infamous for NOT being in jail and disbarred his part in the criminal 2016 election “Trump Russia Dossier” fraud) did in multiple states in the 2020 election.

Surely you remember your party’s lawyers like Mark Elias doing that, pbinca. You can’t remember that pbinca? Or the judges in the states that Elias got to change state voting laws telling the Trump campaign they didn’t have standing to appeal those changes in the same courts who changed those laws? Your party celebrated that!

The main thing is to keep federal officials as far away from control over these elections as possible.

Just a lapse in your critical writing skills that you didn’t also say it’s important to keep Democrat lawyers like Marc Elias away from unconstitutionally altering state election laws yet again?

Or was it deliberate that you left that part out?

    2. What ever happened to protecting the minority from the tyranny of the majority?

Heck, poll most MAGA people and they want slavery back. So let’s do it, black people can no longer vote and are slaves of whoever claims them.

      1. Sure, because you’ve talked to them personally, and that’s what they told you…..NOT.

You don’t know oppo-branding when you see it?

      2. Anonymous,

Really? FYI, I happen to be one of those “MAGA people”, as you put it. I’ve never once thought slavery was a good idea, I’ve never wanted to put blacks back in chains, etc.

If I had the money, which I don’t, you and others like you would be looking at a class-action suit for slander and libel, as I believe such comments, while perfectly allowed under 1A, nevertheless should have consequences.

I, as a so-called “MAGA person”, simply want a secure border, want peace thru strength, as JFK did, and I want America to return to being that “Shining city on a hill”, as Ronaldus Magnus so aptly put it — it’s no more complicated than that.

      3. Heck, poll most MAGA people and they want slavery back. So let’s do it, black people can no longer vote and are slaves of whoever claims them.

Welcome to the discussion, Joe Biden. Is Bolshevik Barry going to appear as well to reinforce the message that if black Americans don’t vote Democrat, they aren’t black? Or maybe now they’re misogynist as well as self-hating racists if they don’t vote for Cackles Harris?

Have you finally found a second decent, clean, well dressed and well spoken black man in Washington DC in 50 years after finally meeting your first one. The one in the form of a mulatto who renounced his life of Rich White Privilege to run for political office as a po’ black chil’ from da’ Hood?

Grandkids safe in private schools so you don’t have to worry about them having to attend schools full of jungle bunnies as you worried about that fate befalling The Crackhead Kid when he was a youngster?

  10. Every other legitimate democracy in the world has voter ID. The last to institute voter ID was the UK and that was just recently. India with 1.5 billion people, at least 3 main languages and many minor ones, and multiple large and diverse ethnic groups, both Hindu and Muslim has voter ID and has had it for years.
I have the Real ID and have had it for years. It is Easy as Pie, not pi, to get if you are a citizen but somewhat more difficult if you are not. Indiana has had voter ID for years and it has withstood every lawsuit thrown against it both with the previous Supreme Court and the more conservative Recent Supreme Court. And cost is virtually nil.
There is no excuse not to have it. I remind people that with the recently enacted State of Georgia voter ID that voting has surged ever since it was enacted. People want confidence in their vote counting when it is cast and that seems to run across all political groups. Imagine that.
Actually it’s kinda nice to watch an election from Europe because the victor is known by the next day. The only problem in Europe is the European Union Superstate which ignores all those legitimate voters who hate it.
Maybe the EU should put itself on the ballot in every EU nation with voter ID and a simple question.

Eliminate the EU – O <—- right answer
    Keep the EU. – O.
Wonder what the result would be?

  11. To assure the integrity of America’s voting system is as much of an issue of embracing common sense as it would be to assure the integrity of the USD or balancing America’s budget.

  12. Nearly 19yrs an 5mos ago the ‘Real ID’ for Secure driver’s licenses and identification documents became effective.
‘Real’ Americans should already be prepared for the Voting Identification requirements.
Normal Americans followed the Law and now They are putting the requirement into action for good use.
Normal Americans should have no problem with this.

It’s the Ones that aren’t Normal that have a problem now.

The ‘STAR’ on your Drivers License/State I.D. was enacted in 2005

  13. Democrats oppose ID and other election integrity measures because they believe illegal votes will be for them and help keep them in power. It’s very simple.

      1. Here we have a spastic idiot who imagines a world where someone who cheats the system to get into our country, and cheats again to get on the voter roll, would not cheat again to vote. GFY, you are too dumb to comment here.

      2. All they have to do is get on the voter rolls, and someone else can figure a way to cast a ballot in that name. Is this clear enough for you?

        1. The ballots are bar-coded to the individual registered voter. The envelope must be signed. There is signature checking by human or image processing.

You aren’t convincing that ballot fraud (voting another person’s ballot) would NOT be detected.

And the idea that a massive fraud operation — large enough to sway the outcome — would go unnoticed?….pure horse manure.

I doubt you would have the guts to call your local county election office, and ask them to go over the 3 most likely ways someone might try to cast a fraudulent vote, and explain the detection measures in place. I dare you.

You don’t care how balloting actually works, and the security layers in place, because you’re just looking for an excuse if Trump loses again. I’m sick of the bs.

          1. Have you actually seen samples of these “signatures”? Have you observed the “signature verification” process? Did you know that in some states election workers are advised to presume the signature matches the sample on file? Have you observed Democrats and a few Republicans fighting like cats to not allow any inspections of the process or view of the ballots or envelopes?

Did you ever recieve that money offered by the Nigerian prince?

          2. Since you believe these claims and concerns are BS, this from Colorado whose SoS calls its procedures the “Gold Standard”:

” The ballots were filled out, signed, and returned via USPS blue boxes—mailboxes, not ballot drop boxes. This discovery was only made during the state’s signature verification process.

Griswold revealed that at least four ballots made it through the initial signature checks, and three were fraudulently counted. The Mesa County Clerk, Bobbie Gross, pulled the remaining ballots from the final tally.”

          3. “The envelope must be signed. There is signature checking by human or image processing.”

Bwahahahahahahaha you are hilarious. Where were you when the Dem poll workers were rubber stamping signature verifications? Get a grip, loser.

            1. And once the ballot is removed from the envelope, ALL tracing or “recount” is null and void.

          4. pbinca posted: You don’t care how balloting actually works, and the security layers in place, because you’re just looking for an excuse if Trump loses again. I’m sick of the bs.

Well, you certainly weren’t sick of Democrats screeching that when Bush beat Gore. You certainly weren’t sick of that BS when they repeated the election was stolen with Bush then beat Kerry. Just as you weren’t sick of it when Cliinton claimed/still claims she lost because the Russians helped Trump steal the election.

Just as you never expressed “I’m sick of this” as Stacey Abrams repeatedly claimed racists had stolen the election and she was the real governor of Georgia.

So pbinca… tell us again how The Big Lie isn’t Democrats claiming the 2020 election was the most transparent and fairest in history?

Tell us how Marc Elias and his battalions of lawyers successfully going shopping for judges and bureaucrats willing to unconstitutionally change state election laws in critical battleground states couldn’t have possibly rigged the election outcome.

Tell us how Biden’s bureaucrats from the FBI both hiding the existence of the Biden Bribery Laptop from both congressional Oversight Committees and American voters, as well as working with Social Media to prevent news media from reporting on the contents of that laptop didn’t contribute to rigging the election.

Tell us how Obama/Biden bureaucrat and now Secretary of State Anthony Blinken enlisting “51 intelligence experts” to assure voters the Biden Bribery Laptop was “just Russian election disinformation” didn’t contribute to rigging the election?

Or how about that $430 MILLION Zuckerbucks “to help election officials get out the vote” – but carefully injected into only safe Democrat districts in battleground states didn’t help rig the election.

            You’re a cheap fraud, pbinca.

    1. Agreed, @Daniel; some things are so self-evident as to be obvious. If Voter ID & evidence of citizenship worked in favor of Dems, they’d be all up in it.

  14. The DEMS, DC Elite, Main Street Media Stooges, Globalist want to retain POWER/CONTROL, they do not care what the people think, it could be 95% and they would not care. Then we have the DOJ fighting states on cleaning voter rolls/id’s etc. IF Trump wins then they all lose big time and they lose control. Its going to be interesting to see how this all plays out. Fingers crossed the People, and the Constitution Win over those who want to impose their will and control and disregard the Constitution.

  15. then 80% should be voting for Republican

Because 100% of Democrats Elected vote in LOCK STEP to import Illegals and CHEAT on Elections!
Democrats are idealist who imagine they are being good…while actually endorsing EVIL!

      1. Wally with his HPD chimes in with another brain dead post.

And below, Sammy Metamucil lays his morning turd. Good boy, Sammy.

  16. ID; Sure, but also make it so everyone can easily get free ID. No hoops to jump through. But Republicans will never support this because they want it it be a chore to get ID.

Proof of Citizenship: This one is dumb. The government already knows who is a citizen, so why make voters prove to the government what the government already knows.

Voter ID polls well because the average dope on the street does not know the details.

    1. 1. Make it easy
      2. It’s easy, why bother
      3. Ignorant people think other people are ‘dopes’ because stupid democrats can’t function in a non-third world environment

      Got it.

Look, we know the smart democrats (5% of their party) cannot ever get elected without the 95% of their party who are abject morons because of what democrat education and welfare systems have produced, because the smart democrats only serve themselves, so non-abject morons will never vote for them, so the smart democrats have to lie, cheat, and steal elections. It is documented fact.

Now go run along and hope you can cheat enough to keep the cheneys, boltons, teachers unions, and degenerates flush with other peoples’ money that no self-respecting person would ever give voluntarily to, as well as keeping the smug morons happy at boring georgetown parties with people you otherwise loathe except for they’re in the on the theft, too.

      ROT.

    2. Voter ID is free and there are no details.

You are obviously one of the dopes in the 20%

    3. Are you familiar with the Real ID Act? It was passed in 2005 and supported by every President since, Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden. By May of next year, everyone is mandated to get it if you ever want to fly or visit a federal facility again.

      Key Provisions

The Real ID Act requires states to:
Confirm the identity of applicants and verify their citizenship or immigration status.
Limit the validity of identification documents to eight years.
Implement background checks and fraud prevention programs for employees issuing identification documents.
Maintain an electronic database of identification documents issued, including driver histories and violations, and provide access to it to all other states and territories.
Display specific information on identification documents, such as full name, date of birth, gender, photograph, address, signature, document number, security features, and machine-readable technology.

Do you know what is required to get one if you are a current citizen or here under visa? In California, where NO ID OR PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP IS REQUIRED TO VOTE, here’s the list:

“To apply for a REAL ID, you must present several documents, including ONE proof of identity document from the list below. This document must include your date of birth and your full name (first, middle, and last). More information on documents.
Check mark the document below that you’ll use as your proof of identity.
Valid U.S. passport or passport card (Preferred)
Original or Certified copy of U.S birth certificate (issued by a city, county, or state vital statistics office). “Abbreviated” or “Abstract” certificates are NOT accepted.
      Valid Permanent Resident Card
Foreign passport with valid U.S. Visa and approved I-94 form
Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of U.S. Citizenship
Certified copy of birth certificate from a U.S. Territory
Valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Card (I-766) or valid/expired EAD Card with Notice of Action (I-797 C)
Valid Permanent Resident Card with Notice of Action (I-797 C) or Approval Notice (I-797)
U.S. Certificate of Birth Abroad or Consular Report of Birth Abroad of U.S. Citizen
Valid foreign passport stamped “Processed for I-551”
      Documents reflecting TPS benefit eligibility”

      ‘Nuff said.

    4. “Voter ID polls well because the average dope on the street does not know the details.”

Hey Sammy, you ignorant POS. Why dont you go here and read about the Alabama Voter Photo ID.

Its FREE and they have a mobile unit that will come to YOU to make it.

There’s the details. Now, GFY, you blathering idiot.

      https://www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/voter/voter-id

      1. Yes, I am in error and you are correct. The entire population of the US lives in Alabama and is able to get Alabama ID.

        1. So, just double down on your retarded statements, Sammy Metamucil. A very Svelaz move.

As they say, you can’t fix stupid.

Why dont you name that states that require voter photo ID, that DO NOT offer it free of charge? We’ll wait.

        2. Still waiting for you to name all the other ways Republicans make it a tad harder to vote.

        3. Just double down on stupid, why don’t you?

Name the states that have mandatory photo ID and dont make it available for free.

    5. Yep, Sammy you’re a Gimmedat Dimmicrat alright. $35T national debt and your solution to voter ID is free ID cards.
370M of them, with federal or State employees providing labor materials, equipment and overhead that should cost another $billion or two. How about citizens paying their costs and payment can be made with their EBT card, could be a tax credit that way the taxpayers can keep their own money yet still get to pay for the cost.

      1. If voter ID is so important to Republicans, would the cost be worth it for secure elections? Why yell up and down the street how much we need voter ID, then balk about efforts to get ID to everyone? Answer: Because voter ID is not about election security at all, it is about making it a tad harder to vote. This coupled with all the other ways Republicans make it a tad harder to vote and you have a significant barrier to voting. That is the goal.

        1. “This coupled with all the other ways Republicans make it a tad harder to vote”

Why dont you name them, you blathering idiot?

    6. No offense, but you’re an idiot.

Consider South Carolina, for example. Several years ago the Republican dominated SC state legislature, and Republican governor signed into law a voter ID law. It did not become effective for two years. So voters who lacked a voter ID had two years notice to figure out how to get one.

In addition, the law provided a free ID to anyone who lacked one of the forms of voter ID they could present to vote (state issued drivers license, for example). It also provided free transportation to and from where they needed to go to get the ID. In sum, the Republicans gave voters two years notice to figure out how to get themselves a voter ID; they mandated the state provide a free ID to those who lacked one; and they mandated the state offer free transportation to and from where they needed to go to get one. I have not kept up on current data, but on the one year anniversary of the law’s enactment it was reported around 20 people had used the free transportation option.

You always remind me of Reagan’s famous quote, “The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.”

  17. Democrats believe that blacks are disenfranchised and uninformed. Democrats believe that blacks are incapable of obtaining a government issued ID for voting. Democrats also believe that blacks are incapable of thinking for themselves. This is why Democrats favor laws that do not require an ID to vote. What a shame…

  18. I’ll agree on sending absentee voter applications out, if any that are undeliverable result in the person being removed from the voter rolls.

    1. I disagree- I believe absentee ballots should never be mailed unsolicited by eligible voters.

    2. Sent out via UPS, I would hope. Otherwise you are putting legitimate voters at the mercy of the uber-competent (/SARC) USPS. Not a good idea, imo.
