The Reviews Are In: “Rage and the Republic is Jonathan Turley’s Birthday Gift to America to Mark its 250 Years of Independence”

The early reviews of Rage and the Republic are in!  In a few days, books (including an audiobook) will be shipped out and on the shelves of bookstores by February 3. Simon & Schuster is releasing the book to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

“In this book, Professor Turley explores the meaning and future of democracy on the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. The book is divided into two halves. The first half looks back at the unique confluence of people and events that led to the establishment of the American Republic. Using Thomas Paine as a common thread through both the American and French Revolutions, Turley explores how one revolution led to the world’s oldest and most stable democracy while the other led to the “Terror.” The difference came down to the protections in the Madisonian system against “democratic despotism,” a tendency of democracies to devour themselves in majoritarian terror.

The second half of the book looks forward, exploring whether the American Republic can survive in the 21st Century in light of changes ranging from AI to robotics to global governance systems. Turley believes that the American Republic is uniquely suited to address those challenges, but it will require a return, not a rejection, of the core values that defined the American Revolution. That includes what Turley calls a “liberty-enhancing economy” that affords citizens the freedom of self-determination and true independence. Drawing from sources across art, philosophy, history, literature, and economics, Turley presents a unique and passionate perspective on the future of American democracy.”

Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution may be purchased from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Target, Bam!, Walmart, Hudson, and other sites.

Here are what conservative and liberal academics and writers are saying about Rage and the Republic:

“A masterpiece… a moving account on the very essence of liberty that should be on the shelf of every American.”– Mark Levin, host of Life, Liberty & Levin and #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Turley demonstrates a discomforting, and painfully timely, truth: The phrase “democratic despotism” is not an oxymoron.– George F. Will, Pulitzer Prize winner and Washington Post columnist

Rage and the Republic is Jonathan Turley’s birthday gift to America to mark its 250 years of independence… A wise guide to avoid wrecking the American project.”– Uri Berliner, contributing editor, Free Press and former senior business editor at National Public Radio

“A fascinating and inspiring account of the foundations of the American system…a must-read.”– Nadine Strossen, former president of the American Civil Liberties Union

“[A] scholarly tour de force that could not be more timely.”– Charles Lane, author of The Day Freedom Died and nonresident senior fellow, the American Enterprise Institute

“[A] valuable contribution to American civic life.”– Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions, Princeton University

“In this riveting book, [Turley] revisits the past—focusing particularly on the remarkable life of Tom Paine and how the democratic principles of the French Revolution differed from our own—to identify the nature of the current threats to our liberties and our constitutional order. History has never been put to a better use.”– Randy E. Barnett, Patrick Hotung Professor of Constitutional Law at the Georgetown University Law Center and Director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution

“A fluent take on history and politics from a thoughtful contrarian.”– Kirkus Reviews

  1. Well, we have a new challenge on our hands: big money fighting the federal government on our enemies behalf. To back that up, now the Democrats are threatening to “Go Iranian-style postal” on the republicans for discovering public theft.
There won’t be too many follow-on celebrations, counselor.
Trump is merely trying to save a country that does not want to be saved.

  2. Very much anticipating Rage and the Republic in hand. Jonathan’s writing style bodes well for a work everybody can understand about the build of our nation. Imagine what that will add to the national discourse, including here on Res Ipsa. Further, let’s see how it affects the discoarse.

  3. I pre-ordered some time ago.

The reinterpretation of the constitution’s General Welfare clause by FDR needs to be addressed by the courts. They’ve sidestepped this for decades, indicating that this should be decided politically. Yet the politicians and the people they are supposed to represent will continue to throw our money away. Establishing some limiting principles by the courts is long overdue.

    1. Anonymous…really? We are seriously worried about you as you continue your slide. Seek help!

      Gimme a P
      Gimme an R
      Gimme an OZAC
      What does that spell?
      PROZAC
      What do you need?
      Thorazine….

    2. ALL governments have the power to go rogue, enabled, innocently or otherwise, by a voting and trusting populace—see Kier Stramer, Friedrich Merz, Battered-Husband Macron, Scott Morrison (Thank God he’s gone). All of these Hitler-wannabes, and their control of governments used all manner of laws, immoral and excessively controlling, extra-legal, crackdowns, which you more than likely approve of, ideologically…

In the specific case of reversing unchecked illegal immigration, the social/economic overload, and the resulting divisions of the Biden Administration’s calculated primogenitor of “insurrections,” we shall see if the correction lasts only as long as its needed or if it results in a repeat of the National Socialist German Workers Party (NAZI), but for now, you’re jumping the gun.

    3. “Trump will use the Insurrection Act like” it’s been used some 30 times by 15 different presidents — including Leftist darlings FDR, JFK, LBJ.

  4. Now to make this a best seller. There are 300 million Americans in need of a very loud wake-up call.

      1. The professor’s last book was on its fourth printing. Must be selling a lot of books and a lot of people are reading it. Quite the accomplishment.

        1. Upstate, So, they printed 4 copies? The number of printings is no indication of the number sold; it is also no indication that they are going to those looking to read them as opposed to being warehoused and disposed of by those guiding funds to Turley as a reward. Simon & Schuster doesn’t have total printings nor indications of

“The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage” is available like new for less than $5; less than $10 shipped. For 20 cents more, a new copy is available.

This market manipulation is discussed in my book “The Right to Rage: How Billionaires Hire Millionaires to Convince the Middle and Lower Class to be Minions.” It’s a great money way to funnel money from the billionaires to the millionaires to give the patina of credibility to the work.

  5. Professor…..Wonderful! And well-deserved! And again I want to say that we bloggers are incredibly fortunate to have open access to your brilliant mind and cornucopia of opinions/facts re: the Constitution. Every day I feel like I’m receiving a first rate law school education….and free of charge! (or will I get a bill at the end of the semester? LOL)
All of that to say “Thank you” and “Congratulations on the book!”.

  6. It is an oxymoron to write such a book while supporting such a president. Not impressed. Very disappointed.

  7. I never thought of Prof. Turley as a “contrarian”. But hey, if that is how “genius” is spelled nowadays, I agree. I am waiting for his book-signing tour down here in SW Florida.

  8. Congratulations on your book! As the forces of leftwing intolerance grow louder, amplified by a compliant media and stoked by greedy politicians like Walz and Swalwell and Frey and Crockett and Omar and Tlaib and Raskin, no subject is more timely.

    1. Walz, Swalwell, Frey, Crockett, Omar, Tlaib, & Raskin. Sounds like a law firm…..except, if it were, clients would soon find a firm that is ignorant of the law, and actually, offended by it!
Maybe they can all, at least, be cell mates someday. 🙂

  9. Johnathan Turely’s understanding and explanation of the US constitution as a liberal professor is a true gift to the American people.

  10. Folks, just give Turley your money to shut him up.
I’m opening a gofundme page. Link to website will go up in an hour.

        1. Why, DustOff is quite right. Like you could write a book of the status and professionalism of Professor Turley? HA!

    1. ANON
I know you’re devoid of rational logical thoughts so I offer you this in help. If Professor Turley wasn’t in his current state of affairs, authoriing books, teaching and providing legal interpretations, he would be unable to provide you a platform for you to exist. You should therefore tell him thank you for the opportunity to display your intellectual wit and opinions on a public platform. A place to evidence your opinions to all that care to read, a reflection of your inner self.

    2. Sure!! I will buy his book! Hopefully, like his first book, the publisher will have to print a fourth set of copies as it would sell so well and be read by so many people.
