The early reviews of Rage and the Republic are in! In a few days, books (including an audiobook) will be shipped out and on the shelves of bookstores by February 3. Simon & Schuster is releasing the book to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
“In this book, Professor Turley explores the meaning and future of democracy on the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. The book is divided into two halves. The first half looks back at the unique confluence of people and events that led to the establishment of the American Republic. Using Thomas Paine as a common thread through both the American and French Revolutions, Turley explores how one revolution led to the world’s oldest and most stable democracy while the other led to the “Terror.” The difference came down to the protections in the Madisonian system against “democratic despotism,” a tendency of democracies to devour themselves in majoritarian terror.
The second half of the book looks forward, exploring whether the American Republic can survive in the 21st Century in light of changes ranging from AI to robotics to global governance systems. Turley believes that the American Republic is uniquely suited to address those challenges, but it will require a return, not a rejection, of the core values that defined the American Revolution. That includes what Turley calls a “liberty-enhancing economy” that affords citizens the freedom of self-determination and true independence. Drawing from sources across art, philosophy, history, literature, and economics, Turley presents a unique and passionate perspective on the future of American democracy.”
Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution may be purchased from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Target, Bam!, Walmart, Hudson, and other sites.
Here are what conservative and liberal academics and writers are saying about Rage and the Republic:
“A masterpiece… a moving account on the very essence of liberty that should be on the shelf of every American.”– Mark Levin, host of Life, Liberty & Levin and #1 New York Times bestselling author
“Turley demonstrates a discomforting, and painfully timely, truth: The phrase “democratic despotism” is not an oxymoron.”– George F. Will, Pulitzer Prize winner and Washington Post columnist
“Rage and the Republic is Jonathan Turley’s birthday gift to America to mark its 250 years of independence… A wise guide to avoid wrecking the American project.”– Uri Berliner, contributing editor, Free Press and former senior business editor at National Public Radio
“A fascinating and inspiring account of the foundations of the American system…a must-read.”– Nadine Strossen, former president of the American Civil Liberties Union
“[A] scholarly tour de force that could not be more timely.”– Charles Lane, author of The Day Freedom Died and nonresident senior fellow, the American Enterprise Institute
“Brilliant and riveting. The American Revolution comes alive, and so does the birth of the Constitution.”– Jed Rubenfeld, Yale Law Professor, author, and constitutional law expert
“[A] valuable contribution to American civic life.”– Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions, Princeton University
“In this riveting book, [Turley] revisits the past—focusing particularly on the remarkable life of Tom Paine and how the democratic principles of the French Revolution differed from our own—to identify the nature of the current threats to our liberties and our constitutional order. History has never been put to a better use.”– Randy E. Barnett, Patrick Hotung Professor of Constitutional Law at the Georgetown University Law Center and Director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution
“A fluent take on history and politics from a thoughtful contrarian.”– Kirkus Reviews
” The second half of the book looks forward ” -JT
Looking forward to reading the 2nd section with anticipation, anything that’s optimistic from the standpoint of today reality of the U.S. Government is welcome.
As it is (JT), How can you still call this a “Democracy” when all one can vote for (Elect) are the people who have mastered manipulating ‘The Game’, whether it be Republican or Democratic (Uni-Party). The System-at-Work is that which is ever so slightly being exposed by the revelations of Jeffery Epstein as the curtain is pulled back and the light exposes the Shadows that run the Show (and they are not American). The People are not living in a Democracy in 2026. The Founders could have never imagined what They have created, in the devious machinations of today’s epoch.
Marjorie Taylor Greene hit the nail on the head: (MTG: Resignation letter ~ December 8, 2025)
“… There is no plan to save the world or a 4D chess game being played. When common American people realize and understand that the political-industrial complex of both parties is ripping this country apart, that not one elected leader like me is able to stop Washington’s machine from gradually destroying our country, and instead, the reality is that they, common Americans, the people, possess the real power over Washington, then I’ll be here by their side to rebuild it. …”
She was dead right. So my hope is, that your treatise will point the way forward for another 250 years.
Congrats on this chef d’oevre. It will last for a very long time!
Congress approving of someone else doing its job is not the same as Congress doing its own job as stated in the Constitution.
Why is Iran our war but not Ukraine?
I am hopeful that Trump will act, that the actions will be limited and that it will have the effect of removing the Ayatolah’s from power.
If Ukraine is your issue – Removing the Ayatolah’s from power will removed Iran’s support of Putin in Ukraine – Iran provides Putin with approximately 40% of his munitions.
I have argued repeatedly that the Ukraine war is a war of attrition and that Russia will win a War of attrition.
However there are a number of factors that can tip the balance. If Russia has its supply of War Material reduced by 40% it likely can not win – and probably will lose.
Another factor related to Iran and Venezuela is that Oil from Russia is subject to sanctions. But it has managed to get onto the global market by being laundered by Venezuela. The changes regarding Venezuela are harmful to China, Cuba, Iran and Russia.
Russia has lots lots of dominos recently. They have political problems in the Caucuses that have military consequences for the Ukraine war and increase significantly the difficulty for Russia to hold Crimea.
The loss of Syria negatively impacts Russia the loss of Iran will have an even larger negative impact on Russia.
Russia’s ability to sell oil is critical to maintaining its ability to wage war. Its ability to sell oil is also critical to its ability to recover from the war when there is peace. Russia has shut down nearly all its oil production outside the artic. The reason is that if the flow of oil from the arctic regions slows enough – the oil will freeze all the way back into the wells. Only the US has the skills and technology to get those wells working again after that occurs. The US, Ukraine, the EU have been actively targeting Russia’s oil delivery as it is likely that again we are close to a point at which one more failure will abruptly cripple Russias ability to wage war.
It is easy to see all kinds of positive results from removing the Ayatolahs from power.
That is true even if Iran itself ends up a mess afterwards.
My primary concern regarding Iran is that I am not entirely sure that we can succeed in diminishing the grip of the Ayatolahs.
I am not entirely sure that we should not simply treat Kahmani as a terrorist and take him out in the same way as Bin Laden
and then let whatever happens int he country happen.
While it would be hard to have an Iran that was worse than what we currently have, there is no guarantee or even high likelihood that acting in Iran will result in good government in Iran.
With respect to Putin – we do not have the justification, in multiple ways to take out Putin, nor the ability to succeed without likely starting a nuclear war.
Next it is very much not in US interests to have a direct military conflict with another nuclear power. We are doing as much as we can in Ukraine while avoiding a direct confrontation. We can do alot more in Iran without a direct confrontation.
Iran’s sales to Russia are a key source of income. Whoever replaces the current Iranian leadership will continue to make those sales.
Some $200 *billion* of American taxpayer money spent on Ukraine. No acknowledgment. No sign of appreciation. Just the opposite: You try to make Americans feel guilty.
You’re a pathetic ingrate.
Hotels in Minneapolis- St. Paul are closing down due to “public safety concerns.”
All guests had their reservations cancelled at noon today and were told to leave, and they are not accepting new reservations.
Coincidentally, almost all the guests are ICE agents.
If you want me to experience bad things, then I want you to experience bad things, and I will do everything that I can to make sure you experience them.
Hear! Hear! Congratulations, Prof. Turley…! Based on the masterly and powerful writing you have shared with us here, yes, calling your latest book a timely ‘Masterpiece’ has to be true.. Your ‘Gift’ will be greatly appreciated by and a great contribution to The American Experiment…. Welcoming your Book, I feel the same kind of emotion that Victor Laszlo felt when he said: ‘..this time I know ‘our side’ (i.e., Freedom.. Democracy.. our Constitutional Republic.. ) will win…’
Why is Iran our war, but not Ukraine?
Trump can be considered a thug, too, based on how he always threatens people.
But I guess you don’t really mind this.
A Democratic administration saved us from Nazism, so it makes no sense to say the Left are Nazis.
ICE are the ones acting like Nazis, under orders from Trump.

AT this point you can pretty much figure that the Clintons and Israeli Intelligence are screwed. And a bunch of other Pedophiles and Dubious Charters that run the shadow government are in the 5.2 million pieces of incriminating evidence. Thus it is the truth that can’t be seen. Marco Rubio (Sec. of State) and current acting head of the National Archives, place the trove (unredacted) into the Archive as a Time Capsule to be opened 250 years from now, We all will be gone but at least someone (or thing) will have a clearer understanding of how the Would really worked in the year 2026.
Professor Turley, your blog has been totally destroyed by communist (liberal, progressive, socialist, democrat, RINO, AINO) trolls.
You’re just a bunch of stupid MAGA myrmidons.
Not an argument
It’s not fallacious.
I have tried that, but there is no getting through to you, anyway, so why bother?
Anonymous comes up with something she thinks is a knock on Trump and then when she is presented with the facts she just ignores the reality. Obama used ice to arrest illegal aliens and not a peep. Trump does the same and it’s the end of constitution government. Anonymous is very predictable. After the facts prove her wrong she resorts to oh yea well you’re just a doo doo head. Still acting like she did on the elementary school playground. She’s just like the protestors in Minnesota who didn’t say a word when Obama was arresting illegal alien rapist, murderers and drug dealers. Like clockwork doo doo head doo doo head. Real mature there Anonymous.
He did it in an unobtrusive way.
Anonymous is worried about Trump taking over Greenland. Greenland is 942 miles from Russia. A military jet can get there in about the time that it takes most people to drive to work and back. There is something that both Anonymous and Russia have in common. They both don’t want a U.S military presence in Greenland. Makes you wonder about Anonymous doesn’t it.
An ICBM can make it from North Dakota to Moscow in less than 30 minutes. What’s a jet going to do that a 50 Megaton thermonuclear device cannot?
As it is, the US had over 20 military bases in Greenland and a permanent treaty allowing the US to open as many bases as it likes in Greenland. The people of Greenland would welcome an expanded US military presence.
What they don’t want it for Trump to gift mineral and other mining rights to Peter Theil and Elon Musk to go strip mining and polluting Greenland and for those in Greenland to lose the healthcare and self-determination they currently have.
. Yes, I wouldn’t join.
Well Anonymous, according to your logic we should just get rid of all our jet fighters because of ballistic ICBMs. Duh again.
Duh, again, those jet fighters are for use against non-nuclear nations.
It would be so good for thinkitthrough to actually think it through for once.
As usual Anonymous picks up the headlines of a story and runs with it without reading the details.
European Tariffs on South American goods are presently 90%! The agreement states that these tariffs will be phased out over 10 – 15 years. The agreement has not yet been approved by the European Parliament. Anonymous believes that just because her attention span is about ten seconds that yours is too. Strict quotas will remain on beef and sugar. European farmers are against the proposal. Hey Anonymous I thought that you were all about saving the environment. The environmental groups are against it too. Here are the details.
Key Aspects of the Agreement:
Tariff Reduction: The deal aims to remove over 90% of existing tariffs on goods and services, making trade significantly cheaper.
Major Beneficiaries: European industries like autos, chemicals, and machinery will gain easier access to Mercosur, while South American agricultural products (beef, poultry, sugar, soy) will see reduced barriers to the EU market.
Phased Implementation: Tariff cuts for sensitive sectors will occur over 10 to 15 years, with strict quotas on products like beef and sugar to protect EU farmers.
Environmental & Social Concerns: The agreement faces strong opposition from European farmers and environmental groups concerned about increased deforestation, lower environmental standards, and potential job losses in the EU.
Ratification Needed: Despite the signing, the deal requires approval from the European Parliament and ratification by each Mercosur nation, a process that could still be delayed by protests.
We can count on Anonymous not taking the time to research a subject before she puts her Trump Derangement stamp on it. Fools gonna fool.
Seems Europe is a bit PO’d about trumps takeover of Greenland.
I don’t recall a takeover of Greenland on trumps wish list in 2024.
I don’t recall a takeover of Venezuela on trumps wish list in 2024
I don’t recall a takeover of Iran on trumps wish list in 2024
I don’t recall a takeover of Cuba on trumps wish list in 2024
I don’t recall a takeover of Columbia on trumps wish list in 2024
In fact I recall trump saying let’s end these foreign entanglements.
What happened?
These takeovers are mainly on the wish list of the backers of Project 2025, the real power behind the Trump throne.
8). Prevent world war three, restore peace in europe and in the middle east, and build a great iron dome missile defense shield over our entire country — all made in america
“Seems Europe is a bit PO’d about trumps takeover of Greenland.”
Trump is not “taking over” Greenland.
But if Europe wants to be PO’d – so what.
Europe could actually do something and send boots to help Ukraine defeat Putin.
Ukraine I(S a national security interest of Europe.
It is NOT a national security interest of the US.
Conversely control of Greenland has been a US national security interests since WWI.
“I don’t recall a takeover of Greenland on trumps wish list in 2024.”
Trump has been talking about acquiring greenland for a decade.
“I don’t recall a takeover of Venezuela on trumps wish list in 2024”
We are not “taking over Venzuella. We have arrested a Narco Terrorist and we are working with the Venezuellan Government to End Venezuella’
s continued acts of war against the US – you probably ignored that – But Maduro declared that Venezuella was at War with the US.
“I don’t recall a takeover of Iran on trumps wish list in 2024”
We are not taking over Iran. The Iranian people are.
But we are likely to us force to prevent a brutal authoritarian regime from murdering its own people.
Regardless it is in US interest and it WAS part of Trump’s platform to bring peace the the mideast (and to Ukraine).
Aiding the Irainina people in getting rid of the Ayatolah assists in both of those.
“I don’t recall a takeover of Cuba on trumps wish list in 2024”
We are not taking over Cuba. They are failing on their own.
“I don’t recall a takeover of Columbia on trumps wish list in 2024”
We are not taking over Columbia
“In fact I recall trump saying let’s end these foreign entanglements.
What happened?”
Trump opposed “endless wars that have no US interests at stake.
The US is not going to War with anyone. Though both Venezuela and Iran have claimed to be at War with the US.
All uses of military power are not an endless war.
The Venezuealan, Cuba, Iranian, Columbian, …. people are free to choose the government they prefer.
They are NOT free to traffic Drugs, terrorists, etc particularly harmful to US interests.
I would note even Obama has publicly regreted not aiding the Iranian Green Revolution.
Nearly all americans fully supported invading Afghanistan to punish the Taliban for its role in a massive Act of War – 9/11
Many or us myself included demanded that we leave Afghanistan when the Taliban was removed from power – which took 90 days.
If the Afghan people chose to bring them back – that is their choice.
John
Heck. Cuba can’t even keep the lights on or feed it’s own people. Thanks Castro!
John Say writes: “Trump is not “taking over” Greenland.”
That is, Trump has not taken over Greenland, but Trump has repeatedly proposed taking over Greenland, either by having the US Treasury fork out the cash to buy it or by force of arms.
Nearly all Americans were lied to about the need to invade Afghanistan when the bulk of the attackers were born Saudi Arabians with ties to powerful families in Saudi Arabia. Bush lied; Trump lies. It’s a tough habit among the Republicans to not lie.
Why should Americans not be allowed to buy drugs from whomever they wish to? Is there some reason that so many Americans would chose to risk death from overdose than to live in this country anymore? Why won’t the Republicans fix that death wish?
CCP brigaders here really feeling the hit from the new Trump oil market. They are boxed in and unable to help their evil friends.
The European Union and the Mercosur bloc of South American countries formally signed a long-sought free trade agreement on Saturday, strengthening commercial ties in the face of rising protectionism and trade tensions around the world.
In creating one of the world’s largest free trade zones, the accord — pushed by South America’s renowned cattle-raising countries and Europe’s industrial sectors craving new markets for cars and machines — brings together a market of more than 700 million consumers that accounts for a quarter of global gross domestic product.
The signing ceremony in Paraguay’s capital, Asuncion, caps more than a quarter-century of torturous negotiations. It marks a major geopolitical victory for the EU in an age of American tariffs and surging Chinese exports, expanding the bloc’s foothold in a resource-rich region increasingly contested by Washington and Beijing.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who heads the EU’s executive branch, portrayed the deal as a bulwark against the disruptive policies of the Trump administration.
“It reflects a clear and deliberate choice: We choose fair trade over tariffs. We choose a productive long-term partnership over isolation,” von der Leyen declared in a veiled rebuke of Trump at the ceremony, which got underway as Trump announced 10% tariffs on eight European nations over their opposition to American control of Greenland.
“We will join forces like never before, because we believe that this is the best way to make our people and our countries prosper,” she added.
Perhaps most striking is the enthusiasm of Argentine President Javier Milei, a radical libertarian and admirer of Trump who shares the U.S. leader’s contempt for global institutions like the United Nations. Milei came to office in late 2023 with nothing but scorn for Mercosur, trashing it as a “prison,” threatening to withdraw and skipping the 2024 summit.
But his enthusiasm for free trade overcame any skepticism of the bloc at Saturday’s ceremony.
“Argentina understands firsthand that closure and protectionism, sheltered by rhetoric rather than results, are the greatest causes of economic stagnation,” he said before signing.
Argentina is all in for the deal.
Milei took Trump’s $40 billion and then does this.
Milei played Trump for the ignorant sucker that he is.
Trump really is a great uniter.
He is uniting the rest of the world against the United States.
Trump is destroying the USA on Putin’s orders.
This is precisely what Putin has paid for.
He has he gotten his money’s worth and then some.
The world is getting smaller for the US.
But we will still have Mother Russia and far-right Israel.
America is on its way to being its own private island where no one is allowed in or out.
And the rest of the world goes on with their business and leaves us behind.
It doesn’t have to be like this, but here we are.
The US, currently, is too chaotic, unreliable and vindictive to be seen as a reliable partner.
Even Milei of Argentina, Trump’s best buddy, has abandoned him.
It will take literal lifetimes to undo what’s being done to our country on the global stage.
To win back the trust from other countries we will have to give a lot more than we get.
Our kids will suffer for this.
The demise of the US as the leader of the world opens whole new paths.
Europe and Canada are also strengthening ties with China. Xi is also an authoritarian leader but he’s not a demented mad king, and China is way more reliable right now than that weird rogue banana republic, called the US.
Putin’s explicitly stated goal has always been to drive a wedge between the US and the rest of the free world.
His plan, using Trump, is succeeding quite admirably.
China is a serious problem for a few more years.
China is in the midst of severe demographic collapse, and unlikely to remain a world power for more than a decade.
I would note China’s ties to the rest of the world are diminishing not expanding.
The US is in a stronger position to be the worlds leader today than ever before – even if we do not want that.
Increasingly we will be able to dictate whatever we want and the rest of the world is going to have little choice but go along.
ATS – US growth over the past 40 years has averaged double that of Europe.
That is why the EU standard of living is only 3/4 of the US (or less).
EU growth last year was a pathetic 1.2% – that was actually high for europe in the 21st century – it was still below US growth under Obama which was the most pathetic in my lifetime.
US growth last year was over 3%, it might exceed 5% in 2026.
Conversely China has been claiming 5% growth for several years – but they have not reported increases in tax revenues.
In fact they have had declines. Chinese economic data is highly untrustworthy. It is likely China had a recession or near recesion in 2025. It is certain they have not had consistent 5% growth since Xi took power. It is not likely they have had consistent 2% growth over that period.
And China has nearly the worst storm clouds in its future of all nations.
Myriads of nations are facing Demographic decline – even collapse.
Japan is worst – and they are the only nation that has done anythign about it.
China is next, with Russia following, and MOST of the EU right behind – France has manageable problems, But the rest of the EU is in deep $hit.
Canada has major demographic problems. They need more than 1M working age immigrants per year for 2 decades and Canada has a growing immigration backlash (like pretty much all of Europe).
The US has problems – but they are manageable – we need about 2M immigrants per year, but that is 1/3 the rate of immigration that places like Canada and Europe need.
Of all the above – only the US has a truly strong economy.
I addressed Europe and China, and Canada, Most of the rest of the Western Hemisphere is actually in good shape – especially if it can get rid of the few remaining left wing socialist governments and reign in criminal Drug Cartels.
The rest of the Pacific Rim – excluding China also likely has a bright future.
Except for the US – which has by far the strongest economy of all western powers,
the significant growth in the future will be in south and central america – if they can overcome socialism and drug cartels,
And the pacific rim.
“It will take literal lifetimes to undo what’s being done to our country on the global stage.”
I sure hope so. God forbid we should rapidly go back to the disaster that was Obama or Biden.
“To win back the trust from other countries”
First the US is perfectly trustworthy.
But even if it were not that is irelevant.
We are the largest economy in the world – bar none.
We are the largest military in the world.
No consequential nation has Growth as large as the US.
No consequential nation has a future as bright as the US.
Further – increasing the US does not need the world.
The world needs the US.
” we will have to give a lot more than we get.
Our kids will suffer for this.”
You are clearly ignorant regarding geopolitics.
Europe has a large number of extremely serious problems.
Hopefully it will figure out how to solve them, but they are NOT of US making,
and increasingly NOT a US concern.
The Cold war is over – Russia is barely even a regional power anymore.
The Axis represented by Russia, China, Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba is coming apart.
We have seen lots of activity in the Mideast int he past year – but it is all moving towards long term peace and stability.
Further it is also moving away from anything that is a US interest.
The US has less and less interest in Oil from the mideast.
We produce enough to meet our own needs and to export.
Further we have abundant energy in our own hemisphere.
US interest in Africa, the Mideast, and Europe is waning.
We have decreasing interest in caring for their problems.
We are more and more focused on North America, the western hemisphere and the pacific rim in that order.
“Putin’s explicitly stated goal has always been to drive a wedge between the US and the rest of the free world.”
And he has succeeded in driving a wedge between himself and the world.
Russian allies are falling like Flies.
Russian enemies are increasing.
Russias future is bleak.
Should Europe trust the US to sacrifice our blood and treasure for them in the future – probably not.
But it is not the US that poses they threat to Europe – it is Russia.
What is increasingly clear is that Europe does NOT need to the US to counter that threat,
and the US is increasingly not interested in doing so.
This would be why there is $16T in foreign investment into the US ?
So that we are clear – Investors NOT world leaders decide where they invest their money.
They do so based on the risk and the return on investment.
The US currently has the world best return on investment fro a country with low risk.
Capital is flowing into the US.
World leaders are NOT happy about that – the US is vaccuming up their future.
US growth for 2025 will be over 3% – 4Q 2025 might hit 5%, it is possible that 2026 Growth will be 5%.
Europes 2025 Growth was 1.2%
Energy costs in Europe are far higher than the US.
Europee has a shortage of people significantly worse than the US,
and rising anti-immigrant sentiments that are much worse then the US.
Europe is deindustrializing.
The US is reindustrializing.
It is not the US that is in trouble.
Europe has massive storm clouds and major problems to overcome to have a decdent future.
The US has few problems – none that are not worse in europe, and mostly just needs to not do something really stupid – like the idiocy of the Biden years to have a very bright future.
Milei has not “abandon Trump”
Striking a deal with the EU is good for Argentina.
So is striking a deal with the US.
I would further note Trump wants trade deals with the entire world – just ones that are actually fair to the US.
ROFL
almost 21M people came here illegally under Biden – another 4M legally
Of 207M total immigrants living outside their countries of birth – 1/8th of those live in the US.
No other nation in the world is even close.
US 2025 GDP approx $30T
GDP of the entirety of south america 4.3T
GDP of the EU 21T
Together they are less than the US
2025 US imports 3.2T – that is 3/4 of the entire South american economy.
2025 South America Imports – less than 500B
We are so lucky to have Israel on our side. They are a significant addition to national security. If Israel isn’t with the US, it could be with China. That should make any anti-American happy, so you must be smiling broadly.
Putin is a contributor, but the main driver for destroying America is the Heritage Foundation which exists to part out the Federal government into the private hand of oligarchs.
Lets see in the past year, Putin has lost his foothold in Syria, Lost his foothold in Venezeuala, is about to lose his foothold in Iran, is losing the Caucauses, Is loosing his ability to launder sanctioned oil,
All because of Trump
And you think this was on Putins orders ?
Are you a complete moron ?
Plus John
Cuba is a total mess. Poor Putin, not much winning going on.
Why is a free trade deal between the EU and south america a threat to the US ?
ANON= IGNORANT SUCKER!

How may Soy Beans have been sold to China int he last year under MAGA trump?

? free trade with allies and by allies was always an option.
This is another Trump win.
Argentina is now part of the solution… and soon to be, Venezueala, Iran, Greenland, …
you watch him work his magic.
You are correct that free trade between allies is always an option.
However, “allies” tend not to attack each other with draconian tariffs.
Tariffs are used to attack enemies.
By your own assessment, since Trump has placed tariffs on most countries of the free world, we really don’t have any allies left.
Even Milei of Argentina, who Trump touted as an ally, and who was bailed out with $40 billion of US taxpayer money, has turned on Trump and the USA.
So how exactly is that a win for Trump, or part of the “solution” ?????????
Why would Trump care that Milei has negotiated a Free Trade DEal with Europe ?
Particularly on that is unlikely to ever materialize ?
The US did not give Milei a dime. They secured Argentia’s loans – in return for interest.
The US will make money on that deal – not lose it.
Hey Anonymous put this in your crack pipe and smoke it.
When Obama was President CNN had a segment showing what a great job ICE was doing arresting illegal immigrants who had committed a variety of crimes. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=z83MEWRes48&pp=2Aa8AQ%3D%3D. Obams=good. Trump = Gestapo.
Things like this are the reason that we look at your statements and say mentally ill Trump hater.
It’s still all in your jeans.
Because under Trump ICE is arresting those with allowed legal status to be in the US as well as harassing US citizens as part of mass efforts at discrimination. I don’t recall the Obama administration wanting to invade native America reservations for the purpose of capturing native Americans and imprisoning them because they happen to be brown.
When, under Obama, did ICE send an infant to the hospital following respiratory arrest due to the use of flash-bang grenades and tear gas canisters against a family of citizens they both told to leave the area and then surrounded and fired upon?
All one really needs to know at this point is that Trump and Puppy Killer Noem haven’t been specific about anyone they have arrested who was known to be dangerous, a rapist, a murderer, or having committed any violent crime and the reason for that is that those people aren’t who ICE is after. Those people might kill a bunch of ICE agents and the ICE agents aren’t going to risk their lives to protect Americans in any way.

We can count on Anonymous not taking the time to research a subject before she puts her Trump Derangement stamp on it. Fools gonna fool.
As usual, the MAGA moron misses the point.
The point is that the rest of the world is turning away from the US.
The timeline of the agreement is irrelevant.
The point is that the EU and South America have been negotiating and wrangling over the details of this agreement for more than 25 years without success.
And now that they have a common adversary in Trump and the US, they are forced into finding an agreement.
Trump has forced their hand and even Milei of Argentina has turned his back on Trump.
Trump has forced the EU and Mercosur to the bargaining table and they are at least beginning to find common ground for an agreement., to the exclusion of the US.
As usual, the ATS moron misses the point.
“The point is that the rest of the world is turning away from the US.”
NOT!
The EU and South America striking a deal to reduce Tarriffs does NOT impact the US one way or the other.
Even the EU and South America reducing tariffs IMMEDIATELY does not impact the US one way or the other.
It is a wise move on Both their parts – and they should move far faster at cutting Tarriffs. But again has no impact on the US.
Further the US has offered and likely will ultimately get the same or better a deal from the EU and South America – and it is likely to phase in near immediately once Europe and other countries come to their senses.
What Trump has told the rest of the world – which you are blind to, is the US is NOT your patsy anymore.
And that is HUGE – that is NOT a massive problem for much of the world. But it is a huge problem for Europe Because Europe is both protectionist, Dependent on Revenue from Tarriffs and dependent on the US for much of what it imports from the US and most importantly absolutely dependent on access to US markets – the largest in the world.
This is part of the driving force behind the $16T in foreign investment Trump has secured.
If You are Mercedes, or Volkswagon Audi Group or Aerobus. You are F$%Ked if you do not have access to US markets.
So if the US raises Tarriffs on your product – the solution is to build your product in the US.
That has been happening for a long time – Japan moved production of most product sold in the US to the US a long time ago.
Driven by their own demographic problems. Taiwan started doing this about a decade ago – because of the risk posed by China.
Eirope has lagged behind – but started moving production to the US a decade or so ago – because of their tarriffs and their demographics problems.
So long as the US is the largest market in the world – and US imports are larger than the entire GDP of all of South America.
The nations of the world will strike deals with the US or their businesses will just up and move on their own.
This is little different from the outward migration of Tech Companies from California to anywhere Red.
And a similar migration of other businesses from NYC to anywhere red.
Why is reality and math so hard for left wing nuts to grasp ?
“The point is that the EU and South America have been negotiating and wrangling over the details of this agreement for more than 25 years without success.”
South America is probably a good place to invest. If the countries of South American can cast of the various idiotic vestigest of socialism that are keeping them down. South America has a bright future. SA has vast resources. excellent ports on both the altantic and Pacific
excellent access to world markets and especially the US, a growing population when much of the world is declining, A semi-skilled population, and a reasonably well educated population.
Those of you on the left do not grasp that a major Reason Trump wanted Maduro gone was that if Venezuella cn be restored to the
prosperous free market economy it was before Chavez – a significant portion of the Venezuelan diaspora will gladly return home.
“And now that they have a common adversary in Trump and the US, they are forced into finding an agreement.”
Stupid left wing nuts – incapable of thinking in anything but Zero Sum terms.
“Trump has forced their hand and even Milei of Argentina has turned his back on Trump.”
Neither Milei nor the rest of SA have turned their back on the US.
The EU however is desparate – they are introuble – they have had decades of pi$$ poor growth with little hope in the future, as facing demographic problems almost as bad as Japan, Vhina and Russia, Extreme;ly high energy costs for the foreseable future, and feindustrialization.
“Trump has forced the EU and Mercosur to the bargaining table and they are at least beginning to find common ground for an agreement., to the exclusion of the US.”
No trade deal is exclusive. They could not be even if they tried.
Further Trade deals ultimately are about Taxes – not trade. Companies trade products, nations levy taxes on this products.
Lower Tarriffs open more markes up to foreign companies. They do NOT change exiting trade.
ATS – what claim about the economy have you EVER been right about ?
The agreement was announced in Dec 2024. The signing was only delayed until early 2026 due to a request from Italy to give them time to negotiate with Italian farmers who were protesting the agreement.
I think the agreement is great.
I think the chances of it actually being endorsed by the EU and Mercosur nations is near Zero.
I would note – Trump has made a similar offer to Europe and most of the rest of the world.
Europe is desparate for new markets. With or without Tarrifs it is increasingly uncompetive in the US.
With respect to Milei and Argentina – Mercoseur is irrelevant, – this is a good deal for Argentina.
Congratulations professor!! Good work. A great accomplishment!
Johnathan, I have pre ordered the book. I am amused at the characterization of you as a contrarian. The responses you elicit daily are entertaining. Your willingness to call out the left and the right tell me that you prize intellectual honesty very highly. I pray you continue to cry out in defense of the values of our founders. Those that support authoritarianism across the political spectrum fear your voice. I look forward daily to your take on current events worldwide. Keep up the good fight.
Hear, Hear! I too wondered about “contrarian;” but contrarian to what? Certainly not contrary to Law, Order, and Free Speech. Keep up the good work professor; you’re one of the few voices of sanity in academia today.
