We have previously discussed academic journals canceling publications that challenge the orthodox views of mainstream scholars. The latest such example can be found in the Journal of the New Zealand College of Clinical Psychologists, which pulled the 2025 article of Arna Mitchell who questioned claims that psychology as a field is a tool of “white power.” The editors reportedly declared that such conclusions are “inconsistent” with the publication’s “values.”
Dr. Kumari Valentine, a psychologist and former editor of the journal, wrote an article raising concerns over the retraction: “The reason given for the removal was not research fraud, plagiarism, ethical misconduct, or factual error. Rather, the NZCCP Council determined that retaining the article was inconsistent with the values of the College and could perpetuate harm to Māori.”
The article, “He Wero Ano: Don’t Just Tell Me, Show Me How Science and Psychology Are Racist in New Zealand,” took issue with the “broad,” unsubstantiated claims of systemic racism in “psychology across all levels of the discipline,” including that “science itself is a social construct of white Europeans” and “white power.”
Mitchell, a Māori woman herself, also took issue with the view that tribal “ways of knowing should be given equal weight to scientific ways of knowing in the training and practice of psychologists in New Zealand.”
One would think that such a viewpoint, particularly from a Māori woman, would, at a minimum, be welcomed as a provocative and interesting perspective. However, various readers were less interested in reading it or even responding to it. They campaigned to cancel it.
Some did respond, saying they felt the critique was based on a misunderstanding of Kaupapa Maori psychology. That should also be a welcome perspective in allowing a free exchange of viewpoints on the subject.
Some faculty have cried foul, calling the cancellation raw censorship.
This is reminiscent of the controversy at the Emory Law Journal and the firing of an editor at JAMA.
These controversies are a reflection of the viewpoint intolerance that has taken hold of much of academia, supporting groups, and journals.

A study on Covid vaccines that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s acting director blocked from publication came out Tuesday in a different journal.
The findings show that Covid vaccines reduced the likelihood of severe illness by about half among adults last fall and winter. The study was originally scheduled to be released in March in the CDC’s flagship scientific publication, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). Instead, it was published in JAMA Network Open, a highly regarded, peer-reviewed journal from the American Medical Association.
Acting Director Jay Bhattacharya raised concerns about the paper’s methodology after it had already undergone scientific review and MMWR editors had approved it, current and former CDC employees told NBC News in April.
Some public health experts saw Bhattacharya’s withdrawal of the study as political interference in the CDC’s scientific work or as an attempt to withhold evidence of vaccine safety.

It seems odd that Turley had to reach as far as New Zealand for a free speech in academia issue. This story was widely covered yesterday by mainstream media.
A future historian reading Dr. Turley’s columns will be struck by the frequent intersection of Race, lies, violence, corruption and censorship. Our educated class is drenched in race consciousness. Nothing like it has existed since the Third Reich.
At minimum, since a large percentage of New Zealanders are native (Māori), wouldn’t a substantial percentage of psychology patients be Māori?
As a doctor in psychology, even if you didn’t agree with a patient’s religious beliefs or politics, as a psychology doctor wouldn’t it be valuable to at least understand that point of view? Isn’t that the job?

I am about to finish my first reading of “The Indispensable Right.” It is a masterful, comprehensive history and analysis of the natural right of free speech – or, I should say, the lack and suppression of it. It is a must-read, and re-read, for every law student, lawyer and judge.

The line “science itself is a social construct of white Europeans” gave me a chuckle. So much of liberalism is just thinly disguised chafing at accountability. Accountability in all its forms is hard; it’s a lot easier for “experts” to expound theories and just have them accepted at face value. Humans are inclined to expend minimal effort achieve some goal, and accountability invariably equates to expending a lot of effort. In science, that means supporting your hypothesis with evidence in a manner repeatable by others. When an expert has a theory accepted at face value, it invariably instills an arrogance that they are so smart that all their theories must be accepted at face value. In that respect, science is all about humility; the scientist is ultimately meaningless, their body of work must stand on it’s on and be repeatable by others.
It’s not racism. It’s not white supremacy as a pejorative.
It’s ambition, capability, endeavor, sacrifice, service, and merited success rather than false claims to “equality” and other people’s money.

Sounds like a lot of support for “White people are better than any other race” in that list. Other than that they are the result of a few lucky discoveries which tend to compound. A lot of success was based on fortunes made by using forced labor camps.
“Inconsistent with our values” is not saying they are wrong. The publishers are reacting to this paper as if their religion was being threatened and not the pursuit of truth. This is definitely not the scientific method. Luckily this group is confined to New Zealand but, of course, it is a problem in all scientific circles, not just the soft science ones.

Clinical psychologists are banned from detecting social systems that automatically presume guilt.
Most university faculty know at least one thing about racism, and that is many faculty have build their careers upon racism and its continuing injury to them and the particular races involved (usually blacks). They have no interests other than racism, and they protect their turf and grant sources vigorously. Racism, and its promotion, has become a big business.

This report reminds me that around 20 years ago the FDA approved a race-specific treatment for heart failure for African/Black patients.
