It was my great honor to speak this week at the Nixon Presidential Library on “Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution.” It was the library’s anniversary, and the event was held in the library’s beautiful version of the East Room. Below is the videotape of the remarks.
There was a large crowd, and I was delighted to speak with many of the participants at the book signing. I hope to do a travel blog on the visit, but I am waiting for pictures from the library. However, I forgot my iPhone (that I use for pictures) at home in a rush to the airport on Tuesday. You do not realize how much you rely on these phones until you spend 24 hours without one. That included the inability to take my own pictures.
So I will have much more to say about the library in a coming blog. In the meantime, here is the videotape with my great thanks to the Nixon Presidential Library, the wonderful staff, and the many people who came out for the evening.
I also have planned events coming at the Ford and Carter Presidential Libraries.
When Nixon died, George Romney said he was the most competent President elected after WWII. I think that is still a fair statement. His downfall is proof of the power of the media Left at that time, not a reflection on his personal qualities. If Turley was speaking at a replica of the East Wing, I hope, just as a reminder of the reality which was forced on us, that it was nothing more than a large hole in the ground with debris lying all around, because that’s what OUR East Wing was reduced to by Trump–who arrogantly believes himself entitled to do whatever he pleases. Again, because Trump is so odious, such a liar, and has trashed democracy in order to get as much power as possible, rage is the normal reaction. One of Turley’s assignments is to try to mitigate this by some lame argument that we live in some irrational “age of rage”–as if there is something wrong with being outraged over someone as disgusting as Trump and his entire family of losers. We Americans who cherish democracy, which is most of us, aren’t going to just pretend that Trump is OK merely because he occupies our White House. He got there by lying–never forget that. A strong majority of Trump voters who have been interviewed have said that they voted for him because they believed his lies– about being able to bring down energy and grocery prices on day one, stopping the Russian war of aggression on day one, not knowing anything about Project 2025, full release of the Epstein files, and “no new wars”. There is tremendous buyers remorse for these people.
As time goes on, it becomes clearer and clearer that to Trump, his fake “presidency” is nothing but a reality TV show starring him–he thinks he can just crash sporting events, and every time he does, the team he favors LOSES. This is after fans have been inconvenienced by increased security just so he can get his face in front of those cameras. He thinks he can command Congress to do his bidding, that he can just take our money and do with it what he pleases. Why are they taking our money and giving it to people under the name of “Trump Accounts” when it isn’t his money? Did Congress approve this? He took away health care subsidies for millions, took away USAID that has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. He has cut SNAP benefits and school lunches, all to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest. Housing is unaffordable, and Trump calls “affordability” a Democrat hoax. Our national debt is at an all-time high.
We have lost 19 service members an undisclosed number, in the hundreds, have been seriously injured, and we and have killed thousands of Iranian civilians, all based on a lie that Iran was going to nuke us—Trump fell for Netanyahu’s lie about this, but it was all a cover for Israel to start bombing Lebanon and stealing their land, like it did to the Palestinian people. Now, the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea are shut down, petroleum prices are soaring, stocks are down, prices are up, and there is no end in sight. Chest-thumping Whiskey Pete with his marble-sized balls is demanding more money to pay for testosterone testing and supplements for male troops, more bombs and more missiles, all without any clear objective or end point in sight. The story about Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon is a big, fat, lie. Trump surrounds himself with sycophants who tell him he’s great, he’s doing well, but none of them has any experience in dealing with the Iranian people. He thought he could just waltz in, kill the Supreme Leader, and the populace would take over. Doesn’t he know that the Iranian people are the descendants of the ancient Persians? Probably not. Iran is not Venezuela. Of course, he and Whiskey Pete have lied about Iran’s military might being “totally obliterated”. Yet, somehow, they keep attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz and bombing US bases over there. When Senators demand an accounting, Whiskey Pete accuses them of having Trump Derangement Syndrome and not respecting our troops.
All Trump cares about is power, glory, using the office for personal gain, surrounding himself with shiny gold objects, and trying to create a positive and undeserved “legacy” for himself–everything from putting his name above JFK on the JFK Center for Performing Arts, tearing down the East Wing to build a vanity project no one wants, lying about the cost being covered by donations, threatening news organizations that would not broadcast his lie fest last week, using government resources to get revenge, trying to re-litigate 2020, building himself a triumphal arch and wasting money on other projects, like painting the Lincoln Reflecting Pool.
Yes, we are enraged, as we should be.

Actually, the Trump Accounts for babies is a brilliant moderate-conservative innovation meant to correct a major flaw of capitalism — the turning loose of 18-year-olds as independent actors without any asset resources. The money to seed these accounts with their firat $1K came from a gift from Michael Dell. If parents and other relatives contribute in kind to this account, children in the 2030s will grow up learning about capitalism, and entering its embrace willingly, prepared to thrive in it. Of course, that assumes these children are well-educated, and that’s a big problem still to be fixed in the states that lowered standards. Trump Accounts are egalitarian and post-racial.
