No, CNN Did Not Defame Cenk Uygur by Trashing his Anti-Israel Ad Supporting Abdul El-Sayed

A new ad running to support Democrat senatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan has been widely denounced as anti-Semitic for suggesting that Jews are taking food from Americans. The ad is the work of Rebellion PAC, a political action committee co-founded by The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur. Uygur has now struck out at CNN over a panel discussion that trashed the segment and called it clearly defamatory. For a torts teacher, the claim popped this story to the top of my pile, and I thought it was worthy of addressing. The CNN segment is manifestly not defamatory. Whatever grievance that he may have with the network, it is not a legal one.

The ad shows a couple shopping for food when the husband grabs a dozen eggs.

Wife: “Honey, you’re going to have to put those eggs back.”

Husband: “They don’t like eggs anymore?”

Wife: “No, they like eggs. But we have to set that $7 aside for killing Palestinians.”

Husband: “What? Don’t we give Israel $4 billion a year anyway?”

Wife: “Yeah, and now we’re giving them another $26 billion. It’s like $161 per person. Apparently it’s costing us a lot of money to drop bombs on Gaza.”

Husband: “It’s terrible.”

Wife: “Yeah.”

Husband: “Don’t they get universal healthcare too?”

Wife: “Yeah, they do. We’re paying for that too, probably. Might as well put the bananas back.”

The 90-second advertisement ends with “Mike Rogers is for they/them. Abdul El-Sayed is for you.”

After host Michael Smerconish presented the ad, the CNN panel expressed revulsion to the ad as hateful and anti-Semitic, including using anti-Semitic tropes to enrage viewers.

Uygur defended the ad, solicited donations to keep the ad running in Michigan, and declared the segment defamatory.

The panelists do not appear to mention Uygur by name but the ad credit does refer to him. Ultimately, that is not critical anyway since you can have defamation per quod where the content is still defamatory in combination with reference to extrinsic information or evidence.

An actionable defamation case requires a false statement as to some fact that is published to a third party that causes reputational or other cognizable form of damage. This must be proven pursuant to the relevant standard of proof, discussed below.

As a threshold issue, Uygur is a public figure who must meet a higher standard for any defamation lawsuit. He has long been an influencer and commentator on national stories. In addition to being the host of the popular Young Turks program and a MSNBC regular, he is the uncle of Hasan Piker.

The standard for defamation for public figures and officials in the United States is the product of a decision decades ago in New York Times v. Sullivan. Ironically, this is precisely the environment in which the opinion was written and he is precisely the type of plaintiff that the opinion was meant to deter. The Supreme Court ruled that tort law could not be used to overcome First Amendment protections for free speech or the free press. The Court sought to create “breathing space” for the media by articulating that standard that now applies to both public officials and public figures. In order to prevail, Uygur must show either actual knowledge of its falsity or a reckless disregard of the truth.

However, the greatest problem for Uygur is that the panelists are expressing their own opinions on the value and the content of the ad. It is protected speech and an exception to defamation. Declaring that the ad is anti-Semitic is not a “fact” assertion that would qualify as the foundation for a libel action.

The Supreme Court has rejected the claim that there is a categorical defense for anything claimed to be defamation.  See Milkovich v. Lorain Journal Co., 497 U.S. 1 (1990). However, opinion is protected speech and routinely protected by the courts from defamation liability.

The CNN segment is armor-plated, unassailable opinon, in my view.

Ironically, it is Uygur who has been criticized for misrepresenting the factual context for the ad.

Critics have objected that the $26 billion figure actually comes from a 2024 emergency spending package and not, as suggested, a new amount. That makes sense because the ad was recycled from Uygar’s 2024 presidential campaign.

The 2024 legislation included over $9 billion in humanitarian assistance, including relief for Palestinian civilians in Gaza and other populations. There was also roughly $7 billion set aside for American military operations in the Middle East the replenishment of American military stockpiles. There were payments of $3.5 billion in foreign military financing for Israel and $5.2 billion for missile defense systems.

The good news for Uygar is that the ad itself is also political speech and opinion. Moreover, while some countries or groups have filed for group libel, they are routinely rejected. That includes dubious libel lawsuits by Israel.

Whatever viable lawsuits come out of the Michigan election, the Uygur defamation action will not be one of them.

Jonathan Turley is a law professor and the New York Times best-selling author of “Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution.”
NB: The original column erroneously referenced Cent Uygur as the uncle of El-Sayed. He is the uncle of Hasan Piker. It was corrected shortly after posting. I apologize for the error.

  1. While the ad may not be illegal it most definitely reveals who Sayed is and his political views. His lies are a joke and an insult to anyone who can read!

    1. From that article: The solution, presumably, would be an amendment to the criminal venue statute that would open the door to bringing such prosecutions in a venue not dominated by partisan Democrats. How, exactly, that might be done, I do not know, but it certainly is possible in principle.

Unfortunately it’s not a matter of a statute that can be amended. It would take a constitutional amendment, which is impossible without broad bipartisan support. I would call that impossible even in principle.

      1. Millhouse,

I think a statute would be sufficient. Federal courts, including district courts, are courts of limited jurisdiction. Their jurisdiction is what Congress grants them. They can be granted less. The Constitution provides only for a Supreme Court and such lower courts as Congress may, or mat, create. They can be abolished.

        1. Young, the constitution explicitly requires that all federal crimes be tried in the judicial district where the crime is alleged to have occurred. Therefore there is no statutory fix to the problem being discussed in that article — that trials for crimes that occur in DC are tried before DC juries, which are often made up entirely of Democrat Party activists who ignore their oaths and decide cases based entirely on whether the defendant is one of ours or one of theirs.

          1. Milhouse: “trials for crimes that occur in DC are tried before DC juries, which are often made up entirely of Democrat Party activists who ignore their oaths and decide cases based entirely on whether the defendant is one of ours or one of theirs.”

DC was created by statute and can be abolished by statute. The Constitution does not set the boundaries for judicial districts. DC jurisdiction can be absorbed into federal courts in neighboring states widening the jury pool.

It is unwise to establish district courts in a zone dominated by government employees, lobbyists, contractors, etc because on federal issues the jury is likely to have bias in one direction. It practically makes DNC headquarters a judicial district.

            1. It would be agreeable to retrocede DC to the State of Maryland, though if I’m reading the constitution correctly, they’d have an option to refuse.

              ==

What you can do is recompose the map of federal trial jurisdictions in the continental United States. You have a set of about 50 poles located in the central business district of a given metropolitan area. The trial jurisdiction is composed of every county (or county-equivalent) for whom the distance between its population center and a given poll is the shortest among all the options. Suits involving state governments would repair to whichever jurisdiction encompassed the state capital.

              ==

Brass tacks, you’d have a New York jurisdiction that included Downstate New York, norther New Jersey, and (perhaps some bits of Upstate New York and Connecticut; you’d have a Washington jurisdiction which encompassed DC, a half-dozen counties in Maryland, twenty-odd counties and stand-alone municipalities in Virginia, and some stray counties in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. You’d have a Philadelphia jurisdiction which included about seven or eight counties in sw Penna, about eight in south Jersey, two or three in Delaware, and one in Maryland. You’d have a Chicago jurisdiction which included about half of the counties in Illinois, some counties in nw Indiana, and perhaps one or two counties in Wisconsin. &c.

              ==

As for off-shore territories, Puerto Rico would have its own courts with comprehensive jurisdictions, Hawaii and the three other Pacific territories might have its own court with comprehensive jurisdiciton in Guam &c and federal jurisdiction in Hawaii, Alaska might be a circuit site in the Seattle jurisdiction, and the Virgin Islands might be incorporated into the Miami jurisdiction as a circuit site. where comprehensive jurisdiction is exercised. In the posited Washington jurisdiction, the trial judges would have federal jurisdiciton outside of DC but comprehesnsive jurisdiction in DC.

              ==

You could add some special rules for the New York jurisdiction (no more than two jurors in a panel of 12 may be residents of Manhattan) and for the Washington jurisdiction (no more than two jurors of 12 may be residents of DC).

  2. I see this is the time of night when the TDS-afflicted demons and jackals crawl out from under their rocks and bray at the moon.

  3. On the topic of “crazy vs. common sense”, consider: is it “common sense” to blow billions on a ballroom that will dwarf the White House, a 25-ft triumphant arch that will overshadow graves in Arlington National Cemetery, including JFK’s grave. How about bulldozing trees and tearing up the Potomac public golf course and to close down the JFK Center for the Performing Arts unless Trump’s name is put above JFK’s. On the topic of Trump’s vanity, how about re- naming the Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, the Atlantic Ocean and New Mexico, and punishing media that won’t go along with these things?

Then, there’s cutting subsidies for healthcare to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy— is that “common sense”?

Bear in mind that the country is at war with no end in sight, inflation and the cost of groceries, energy and everything else is soaring, but the foregoing vanity projects are Trump’s priorities. Is that what you MAGAS voted for?

    1. Winning! And you don’t understand anything about golf courses or the Kennedy Center, do you darling?

Thanks to Bidenflation, costs of everything are up 21%.

Thanks to Trump, the Mullahs in Iran won’t be able to nuke Europe or the United States.

Thanks to Obamacare, you can’t keep your doctor even if you like your doctor (Obama admitted he lied), and costs are way up. Wonderful!

      Winning!

      1. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, inflation when Biden left office was 2.9% to 3.0%. According the the same source, inflation is currently 3.7%.

Biden inherited the COVID mess Trump created and turned it around— Biden got America back to work, back to school, got businesses and restaurants back up and running again and got COVID under control.

Iran didn’t have a nuclear weapon. That was a lie Israel used to get Trump to start a war with Iran. It wouldn’t even be an issue but for Trump tearing up the JCPOA agreement in which Iran agreed to never create or acquire a nuclear weapon. Now the Strait of Hormuz is mostly shut down, gas and diesel prices keep rising and there’s no end in sight while Trump obsesses over vainglorious projects like the ballroom, the arch, a helipad, renaming things and enriching himself and his family.

        LOSING!

        1. Just because Biden ended around 3% that is the amount ABOVE the last year. Inflation is

          cumulative /kyoo͞m′yə-lā″tĭv, -yə-lə-tĭv/adjective

          1. Increasing or enlarging by successive addition.

          Biden 2021 8.5% 2022 5.5% 2023 4% 2024 3 % ADDS UP to 21% or 5.5 % average per year. While Trump first term total was 7.6% or 1.9% per year. WHICH IS HIGHER DUMB ANON?? 21% or 7.9%

          Tough one for you ANON????

          1. Kirk: you are MAGA, and like MAGA, you NEVER cite any source for what you claim are facts, because you can’t. The plain fact is that Trump created the economic and public health mess Biden was forced to fix. Inflation went up because the economy was mostly shut down, refineries went off line because schools were closed, school buses weren’t running, people worked from home, churches went online, and there was little to no leisure travel, so demand for petroleum went down. Consumer demand was way down because people weren’t buying things. After Biden turned things around rapidly, supply did not keep up with demand, which caused inflation to spike, but that corrected itself. Economists all agree that COVID was A cause of the economic problems, and that Trump’s incompetence made it much worse. Biden left office and handed Trump an economy with inflation at 3%. It is now 3.7%–why? Because of the stupid tariffs that Trump just won’t give up on even after the SCOTUS said they were illegal, because of the war he started because Netanyahu wanted him to and his general incompetence. Also, the national debt is soaring, Trump is heavily invested in petroleum stocks, AI investments and data centers and his family is getting rich from government contracts for businesses in which they have a financial interest. Also, Trump takes care of his donors, so there won’t be any regulation for AI or data centers which the public wants.

      1. No it didn’t. Trump can lie all he wants about prices coming down, but we Americans know better—we see the prices at the gas pump, at McDonald’s, in the grocery store and when we receive our electricity and other utility bills . The Trump tariffs and the war of choice he started are the reasons.

        1. Biden gave us a total of 21% inflation Trump adding way less now than Biden did.

Also wage increases under Biden were negative compared to inflation.

I said MOST of the increases already happened under Biden. PROVE ME WRONG!!

  4. Islamism is a political ideology in which all of life, including government, is brought under the rule of Islam. That is what’s going on in a place like Iran, it’s what the immigrants in Europe are trying to do with no-go zones and sharia law, and it’s what those in America will try to do once in power. It is totalitarianism, and if successful, it will wipe out the American republic and impose an islamo-fascist society.

*Just yesterday a woman in a burka went into a county board of commissioner meeting and played an Islamic call to prayer and refused to stop when told so she had to be escorted out. She was giving everyone a warning of what’s to come.

  5. Trump Bad For Michigan

Trump’s tarrif war on Canada has been a loser for Michigan.  The auto industry was heavily integrated between Detroit and Windsor.  Now Trump’s mindless policies towards Canada have strained longtime arrangements.

Trump’s war on EV’s forced the auto industry to write-off billions that were already invested in EV production.  And now Trump’s war on Iran has made EV’s look more practical at a time when China is starting to dominate the auto industry.

Meanwhile, the price of diesel has been a huge nuisance to Michigan farmers.  So it’s hard to see why Michiganders would see any reason to elect Trump bootlicker Mike Rogers.

    1. Biden forced car manufacturers to sell EV’S. Billions lost to EV’S costs and lack of sales. Now the auto industry is selling Hybrids at a successful rate. Everything isn’t Trump’s fault as TDS Anon claims!!

May Iran drop a Nuclear bomb on Anon’s head!! ha ha ha

      1. Biden had 8 charging stations built while claiming up tp 500,000 would be built. Another Biden scam costing BILLIONS!!

  6. The Left has gone full Nazi at this point.

I recall not that long ago that Democrats used to vehemently deny on this blog that their party supported Socialism and antisemitism.

    1. You don’t even know what “Nazi” means. ACTUAL Nazis were among the insurrectionists that Trump sent to the Capitol to try to prevent Biden from taking office. Do you remember the “Camp Auschwitz’s” t- shirts? And Trump pardoned them and tried to award them each a million dollars.

Opposition to Israel’s genocide of the Palestinians is not anti Semitism. The United Nations has condemned Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people.

“Socialism” includes tax breaks and subsidies for big business, data centers, AI and bailouts for corporations. Republicans are all in for this kind of “socialism”. They oppose subsidizing healthcare, child care, education and free lunches for poor kids.

          1. There are probably as many reasons for that as there are Jewish Democrats. Some of them are historical party affinity, and others relate to the well-document phenomenon of Jewish self-loathing. But regardless of the reason, today’s Democrats are still Nazis.

      1. 1, There were no insurrectionists involved. Actual insurrections were the “Occupy” events, CHAZ in Seattle, the Portland riots, etc.

        2. The person wearing “Camp Auschwitz” shirt was very clearly anti-Nazi. Only a real idiot or a dishonest person could accuse that person of Nazism.

        3. There is no “genocide”, there is no “Palestinian” nation, and opposition to Israel’s legitimate war on its enemies is anti-semitism.

        4. The United Nations is a thoroughly antisemitic organization, right down to its roots. The very fact that it says something is good evidence that the opposite is true, especially when it goes after the Jooos.

        5. Tax relief is not a subsidy; the government is not giving anything, but merely stealing a little less.

    1. Then put it in. We’re listening.

But we are talking about Michigan. Don’t pretend El-Sayed is an isolated case. As I mentioned below, he is the thin edge of the wedge, by which Islamists will destroy America and all of Western Civ. That is not even debatable at this point, it’s clear as day. Michigan is about much more than Michigan.

  7. In 1979 Iran, the Left, including Marxists, allied with strict Islamists to oust the Shah, in a Red/Green coalition. Islamists portrayed Shah as representative of Western Imperialism, and the freedoms the Shah had introduced were mischaracterized as Western Oppression.

Within a year, Islamists swept away those secular Leftists, purging universities, oppressing women, banning protests, and the use of infamous Hanging Judges.

It is the fault of the Leftist control of our public education system that American youth did not learn how such an alliance faired.

So here we are again, with the Far Left ludicrously championing the cause of Islamists who would oppress women, LGBT, deny free speech, and ban protests.

The Left is actively promoting tyranny.

Ignorance of history dooms us all to repeat it.

    1. The “Left” is NOT “affiliated with” Islamists or Marxists. That’s more MAGA slop—part of the marketing strategy of trying to portray Democrats as “crazy “—“common sense vs. crazy”.

Opposition to Israel starving Palestinians, killing thousands of people and stealing Palestinian territory is NOT anti- Semitism. The United Nations is on record that Israel has been engaging in genocide—not just killing civilians, including women and children, but not allowing humanitarian aid and medical supplies.

There is no “far left” championing anything and none of this has anything to do with the Democratic Party’s platform.

More MAGA propaganda paid for by oligarchs who want to keep their tax breaks, rolling back of consumer and environmental protections and the federal government refusing to enforce regulations, tax breaks and subsidies for data centers and no regulations for AI, all of which Republicans and Trump support because they get lots of money from the oligarchs. So, they have to come up with some way to attack Democrats and this kind of rhetoric is part of the strategy.

      1. The United Nations is a pack of Nazi sympathizers — and so are you. And the “Palestinians” are all actual Nazis. Their cause is literally the Nazi cause; they were Hitler’s actual allies in WW2, and when he was defeated they continued his agenda. That is all they are about. They have never had any legitimate complaint against Israel, and their entire purpose is to violently prevent the Jews — the indigenous people of Judea — from living peacefully and governing themselves in their native land. No “Palestinian land” has been stolen. Israel respects private property and has a vigorous court system that is eager to protect Arab landowners from any encroachment on their property.

    1. Karen, We don’t remember any outpouring of affection for the Shah. His secret police were notoriously brutal. The Mullahs have been even worse. But we didn’t know that in February of ’79.

      1. How could you possibly not know that Mullahs would oppress the population through Sharia Law?

The Shah angered the clerics when he took the souks away from their control, which was a major revenue generator, and he promoted secular education, undermining their authority.

The Iranian Revolution was about Mullahs seizing money and power.

        1. Instead of looking at the past, why don’t you try to defend Trump for trying to defeat the will of the people by midterm gerrymandering, creating new districts that slice up black districts, trying to prevent voting by mail, shutting down polling stations on HBCU campuses, and sending federal troops to polling places in blue districts?

      2. Perhaps you’re right that we did not know what the Islamists would do 47 years ago. But we know now. That leaves the current leftists, who are aligning with an ideology that is the very opposite of what the left claims to value (such as feminism), without any excuse. The historical evidence is clear as day, yet they are aligning with people who will dominate them and then kill them . . . and the rest of us, meaning all of Western Civilization.

          1. . . . who would do exactly what I said. What’s your point?

            1. Religious conservatives are the ones backing the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society. By extension they are backing Trump.

              1. Oh, I see what you did. You put a label on bad guys in Iran. Then you put the same label on good guys in America that are actually the mortal enemies of the bad guys in Iran. Then, having put the same labels on the two opposing groups, you concluded they are the same. Brilliant! Brilliant, I say!

                1. They are only enemies because neither conservative group is willing to share the spoils of having control of a government and its military. They want to eliminate the competition.

The ones in America aren’t the good guys. They are working towards economic subjugation of the middle and lower class, to turn them into serfs working under their feudal system.

    1. We are. What’s happening in Michigan is not isolated. If El-Sayed wins it will be the harbinger of much darker and destructive forces on their way to destroy all of Western Civilization with the willing participation and aid of sissified leftists.

  8. Gigi / Svelaz / TDS Anonymous and Estovir

Gigi / Svelaz / TDS Anonymous humps Estovir’s leg not out of passion, or because he identifies as a chihuahua but wish-casting.  In his tiny mind, Estovir was a towering symbol of authority, and he was determined to establish dominance over Estovir’s academic genius, alpha personality and ravishing good looks.

“I think i can, I think I can, I think I can! Look at me!” he seemed to declare. “I may have an IQ < 70 but I have the confidence of a Rottweiler. So what that everyone mocks me for being a bottom sucking catfish troll. I am me!”

Estovir, naturally, remained busy with his medical profession, conducting research and swatting the hot babes off his trail since he is happily married with a wonderful family.

Undeterred, Gigi / Svelaz / TDS Anonymous continued his chihuahua leg humping campaign, proving that in online circles, success has little to do with reality and everything to do with possessing traits consistent with Axis II personality disorders

Meanwhile, the Rep Ipsa readers watched in amusement, wondering when Gigi / Svelaz / TDS Anonymous would be fired as a paid troll by his employer, Retards-R-Us-Media Matters.

    1. ESTOVIR:

Readers of this blog might have at least 5 questions regarding Estovir, whose constant presence here, in the form of puppet commenters, begs for deep scrutiny.

      1) Who is Estovir?

      2) Where is Estovir?

      3) What is Estovir’s relation to Turley?

      4) Is Estovir paid to monitor this blog?

      5) Does Estovir inflate the number of visits to this blog?

      1. ANON=PSYCHO MORON. Infatuated with Estovir. Accuses others of being Estovir. Needs to be in a PSYCH ward!!!

    2. 🙂

Estovir, I didn’t think anyone could make Anonymous more foolish than he is. You did it. LOL, long and hard.

      1. Meyer, it appears you know that Kirk is Estovir. You’re okay with the dozens of puppets he puts up every day?

  9. Jews make up 0.2% of the worlds population. They get accused of controlling the whole world’s media, financial systems, and governments. They must be some pretty damn amazing people if that’s true. But of course such accusations are absurd. Blaming Jews for the world’s ills, and trying to wipe them out, is as old as the hills. It literally goes back thousands of years to the pharaohs in Egypt, who decreed that all newborn Jewish males were to be drowned.

The Jewish-Arab conflict is even older, going back to the Abraham-Hagar conception of Ishmael, versus the Abraham-Sarah conception of Isaac, the latter of whom was called the son of promise by God. It is a family fight. Arabs and Jews are cousins. God promised to bless Ishmael richly, and lo-and-behold, the Arabs have 22 states in the ME, 99% of the land, and virtually all the oil. All the Jews ask for is one very small state on a tiny strip of desert with no oil to speak of. But because of the Ishmael-Isaac historical rivalry the Arabs refuse to allow even that.

    1. The Chosen people myth is based on writings by the Chosen people themselves. Not only is there no independent corroboration of this opinion, that book has numerous historically incongruent failures. For example, Egyptian history completely misses the large number of plagues and the annihilation of every first born Egyptian male. Egyptian history has no record of enslaving any Hebrews nor of the Egyptian army being swallowed by the Red Sea.

One would think a caution would be passed down from generation to generation had any of that happened, a “do not engage” law if nothing else. How it was the Jews supposedly got lost for 40 years in a place one can walk across in around 40 days is quite the story. Lest one forget: all the Egyptians should be descendants of Noah and his family and be just as chosen as any other. Unfortunately the DNA doesn’t show such a recent common ancestor.

The rise of Islam happens thousands of years after the events of Abraham raping his slave.

Judaism is a moderately successful Middle-eastern cult. Which is fine, as far as it goes. Israel, however, is a nation that is given US taxpayer funds to extend a racist cleansing operation to remove what many in Israeli leadership refer to as an infestation.

On the other hand – why would an organization with some amount of continuity over more than 3000 years not be deeply planted and well financed? The Royal Family of Britain is a flash in the pan in terms of continuity, by comparison, and has done extremely well.

      1. The “chosen people” is actually a misnomer (you used that term, not me). The “created people” is more accurate. After scattering the nations at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11), and appointing “gods” (little ‘g’) over their territories (Deuteronomy 32:8, Psalm 82), God then created a new nation for himself to be God over. I can tell from the tone of your comment that you are an unbeliever, and fine that’s up to you. I’m just clarifying what the Bible says re “chosen.”

Your grasp of the contents of the Bible is minimal, which is fine, I have no issue with that. I don’t expect everyone else to spend time educating themselves about the Bible. But I do have an issue with you pretending to know the Bible when you clearly don’t. That makes you a poseur. For example, you say, “How it was the Jews supposedly got lost for 40 years in a place one can walk across in around 40 days is quite the story.” There is nothing in the Bible that supports the narrative that the Jews “got lost.” So why do you say, “supposedly”? Who is supposing? You?

        1. Wandering for 40 years looking for a place to stay is being lost. I say supposedly because it is all lies.

The claim is from The Covenant (Am Hanivchar): In Jewish tradition, God chose the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to receive the Torah and serve as a “light to the nations”. That’s as chosen as they could claim to be.

I presume you read it in the original ancient Hebrew and not the more modern translations that serve other cults.

          1. Now you refer to Jewish tradition. You didn’t mention that before. When you said all the “it’s not true” stuff, I thought you were talking about the Bible.

As for the Bible – again, there is nothing that supports a narrative of wandering and looking for a place, or being lost. The narrative of Exodus and Joshua are that Yahweh led them using the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. Then God gave them instructions about crossing the Jordan to conquer Canaan. That’s what I was referring to.

I am not aware of any Jews who consider tradition more authoritative than Tenakh. Are you?

          2. Wandering for 40 years looking for a place to stay is being lost.

What a maroon. What an ignoranimus. They were not lost. They were not looking for a place to stay. They were being led by God Himself, Who decided exactly where they should go and how long they should stay in each place. They spent 19 years camped in the same place. The purpose was to let the generation that defied Him die off gradually by natural attrition, rather than taking their lives immediately. Once they were all gone, He led the new generation into the Land and gave it to them.

            1. “The purpose was to let the generation that defied Him die off gradually by natural attrition, rather than taking their lives”

Well there you have it finally!! Such is the difference between those who read ‘the Bible’ and those who know Torah.

      2. “to remove what many in Israeli leadership refer to as an infestation.”

My search has not revealed any such source for the use of the word ‘infestation’. As for the Gazans as an entity consider this:

As to Judaism being a ‘moderately successful Middle-Eastern cult’, one might then argue the same for all of the Christian and Moslem denominations which emerged from the same well spring the mythology of Scripture teaches. Nothing but cults. Wouldn’t you agree?

You have articulated your bias and have made crystal clear that you are most disheartened that the Israeli state, the extant ‘home’ of the world’s Jewish Community still stands, and the status quo is likely to prevail long after those entities which oppose it have crumbled into the dust of history. Should the Israeli State actually have opted to pursue a policy of genocide against the Gazans, Judeans, and Samarians of Islam, it would have been a done deal by now. Your lot is dismayed that they actually possess the will, and military capability to accomplish the task. Such has been the tenacity and will of the Jewish Community to survive, across the millennia. That is why they prevailed in ’48,’56, ’67, ’73, and more. Now they constitute a force to contend with. That which is holding further action against the remaining HAMAS strongholds in Gaza is the matter of moving the civilians out, an effort which HAMAS will endeavor to thwart even if they have to murder their own to maintain the shields of innocents they hide behind to protect and preserve their wretched cause. https://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/hamas.asp

  10. Election Related

A pair of firebrand conservative activists are facing felony identity theft and voting law charges in Minnesota over a stunt they said was intended to expose flaws in the state’s election system.

State prosecutors say James O’Keefe and Cam Higby used real people’s identities to pose as voters and began applying for ballots — but they did not actually cast votes. The pair were charged Wednesday with identity theft and unlawful voting over the hidden-camera ploy filmed during Minnesota’s Aug. 11 primary and later posted to social media.

    Edited From Today’s Politico

    …………………………………

O’Keefe could wind up with a felony for this stunt. Let’s hope so.

    1. “Let’s hope so” because O’Keefe exposes truths that liberals find uncomfortable or inconvenient.

        1. “Commit felonies.” Ironic coming from Mr. Innocent Until Proven Guilty. Hahahahahahah!!!

Has he been proven guilty in a court of law? No. So GFY

        2. You think that when truths are uncomfortable for liberals, the criminal apparatus should be used to make an example of the messenger. Fascist.

        3. It’s called investigative journalism. News gathering. David Gregory committed a felony on national television, but the DC AG said “a prosecution would not promote public safety in the District of Columbia nor serve the best interests of the people of the District to whom this office owes its trust”, and that Gregory’s intent “was to promote the First Amendment purpose of informing an ongoing public debate”. All of that applies many times more so to O’Keefe.

  11. Do you notice the ad does not complain about aid money given to any other country only Israel? We certainly give far more to Ukraine. I never thought I would see such an obviously Anti Israel commercial ad so openly using Anti Semitic blame the Jews tropes. May I remind everyone that the money given to Israel is repaid right back into the economy of the USA as they purchase our weapons and share their military information and technology with us? I hope every Jewish voter who votes sees what the Democratic party candidates have become and this Islamic candidate especially.

    1. Estovir, show us an established source saying we give more money to Ukraine than Israel. Let’s see the breakdown.

      1. Google it yourself, you’ll get plenty of links to “established sources.”

$3.8 billion / year to Israel. $195 billion to Ukraine so far.

I’m not saying anything should go to anyone, but if you’re going to challenge Estovir on the facts, at least make it a real challenge.

        1. Estovir, that $195 billion figure represents money appropriated by Congress since 2022. We haven’t actually given Ukraine that much. Trump has essentially cut them off. And a significant share of that money was spent here in the U.S. replacing weapons given to Ukraine. So that $195 billion figure comes with many caveats.

          1. $181 billion is obligated and over $121 billion has already been disbursed. Big whoop.

And . . . so you do have access to the numbers, and yet you’re still suggesting Estovir is off base for suggesting way more goes to Ukraine, which he’s obviously right about. I note you did not challenge the $3.8 billion to Israel figure.

            1. Estovir

That’s a difference of $60 billion between what Congress appropriated and what was actually spent. For comparison sake, our war on Iran has now cost about $40 billion. So $60 billion is significant.

And Estovir why are you then commenting as Kirk below? What’s the point in that stupid crap?

              1. You’re blowing smoke to distract from the fact that you lost on the Israel-versus-Ukraine issue. So now you bring up Iran and Kirk. Typical transparent ploy by loser leftist.

                  1. Your words: “Estovir, show us an established source saying we give more money to Ukraine than Israel.”

                    So GFY

              2. HEY PSYCHO MORON ANON; I POST AS KIRK BECAUSE I AM KIRK!! F YOURSELF!

STUPID CRAP FROM YOU DAILY!! Registered using my name years ago. Prove I am someone else or just STFU

      2. ..are you that lazy? Anon. from the Darkside.. Do the research yourself and get your ‘breakdown,,; the Billions and Billions we’ve given to Ukraine

    2. Ukraine is not engaging in genocide like Israel is and has done. Ukraine did not goad a stupid US President beholden to weathy Jews who contributed millions to get him elected to bomb another country based on a lie like Israel did. It’s not anti-semitic to point out that Israel has engaged in genocide and deliberate starvation of the Palestinian people, which was the conclusion of the United Nations, or that it has stolen land belonging to the Palestinian people, which includes the West Bank and Golan Heights. Israel’s conduct is wrong, and the United States shouldn’t support Israel.

      1. These are fantasies derived from antisemitic, false propaganda. Israel does not engage in genocide, it makes every effort to avoid civilian deaths and sends millions of tons of humanitarian aid into Gaza.* Hamas, by contrast, uses its own civilians as human shields and prevents them from leaving conflict areas. Israel is fighting Hamas, whose charter calls for the death of Jews and the elimination of the state of Israel. Israel is surrounded by many neighbors seeking to wipe it off the map, and is often attacked by many of them simultaneously. Every war Israel fights is a war for its own survival. Israel has said “yes” countless times to solutions that would allow it to exist alongside of Arabs, but in every single instance, without exceptions, the Arabs have said “No.” It is perverse, in the sense of exactly backwards, to accuse Israel of genocide. Yet the lying liars of the media do all the time, and gullible people like you swallow it hook, line and sinker.

*According to data from Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) and official reports, over 1.9 million to over 2 million tons of humanitarian aid have been facilitated or shipped into the Gaza Strip since the start of the conflict, with approximately 1.78 million tons of food alone reported entering between October 2025 and June 2026

        1. I recall the trucks lined up with food, drinking water, infant formula and medicine for weeks on end that Israel wouldn’t allow into Gaza. I remember people, especially children and infants who starved to death, women who gave birth and didn’t have enough drinking water and protein to be able to breastfeed their babies. I remember bombed out buildings and people cobbling together makeshift shelters out of tarps and debris and standing in line for hours for food. I remember hospitals with no electricity. I remember Israel bombing a maternity hospital.

Tell us: How many Palestinians have died in this latest conflict and how many Israelis have died? How many Israelis starved to death or died of thirst? Figures don’t lie but MAGA media does.

          1. You remember a lot, but do you remember the truth? No.

One example: The Israeli’s were trying to provide generator service to Nasser Hospital in Gaza while Hamas was trying to knock it out. Hamas wants to see the deaths of women, children, the sick, and the elderly for propaganda purposes. They even admitted it.

            1. Setting aside the massive property damage Israel did to Palestine that would take decades to repair, reliable sources conclude that Israel killed at least 77,000 Palestinians, 59% of whom were women, infants and the elderly. Israel lost a little over 2,000 citizens. Israel deliberately added to the suffering of civilians by refusing to allow in humanitarian aid.

          2. The “how many died” as a measure of who’s right is absurd, but the very kind of mindless thing moronic leftists rely on. Many more Germans died than Americans in WWII, but the Germans were in the wrong. Even counting Axis versus Allied troop deaths on the Western Front as a whole, almost twice as many Axis soldiers died. So by your (lack of) logic, the Allies were in the wrong. Pfffft.

If you’re going to play that game, then it makes more sense to talk about percentages: what percentage of Middle East Jews died versus Middle East Arabs. It’s about equal. There are around 250,000,000 Arabs in the middle east, but only 7,000,000 Jews.

      2. Anon. from the Darkside.. as usual.. you are totally wrong and anti-semitic… and again stealing resources from Prof. Turley as u r too cheap to get your own blog for your BS….

      3. Yes, it is antisemitic. The United Nations is antisemitic. There is no such thing as “land belonging to the Palestinian people”; there is no “Palestinian people”, and people’s don’t own land. Land belongs to individuals and Israel has never stolen any. Nations assert sovereignty over land, which is very different from ownership. And since there is no “Palestinian” nation, it has no sovereignty over anywhere. Israel is the legitimate sovereign over Judea, Benjamin, Samaria, and the Golan Heights, which it legitimately won in a defensive war.

  12. This past Sunday, El Sayud’s Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, appeared on ‘Meet The Press’. What a peevish dweeb he seemed!

Instead of answering any of Kristen Welker’s questions, Rogers spent the entire interview grousing about mainstream media. “Boy, you guys are something else”, he kept muttering; making no attempt to articulate any of his positions.

Rogers’ combativess is just a symptom of the Trump era where every Republican needs to show Trump how angry they can be.

Therefore, despite the stupid ad profiled here, Mike Rogers is no choice.

    1. ATS everyone knows where Republicans and Rogers stand.

It is the left that vascillates betwwen anti-semitism and socialism.

El said has expressed his views on many things in the past – views that offend most people.

He has refused to indicate whether his views have changed and if so why.

Name an issue of consequences that might appear before the senate – unless you are clueless you KNOW haw Rogers will vote.

You can not tell me the same about El Said.

It is not the job of the press to pick sides.

It is the job of the press to bring to the forefront what candidates are trying to hide.

Rogers is hiding nothing. This is not his first campaign. He has been in the public eye in Michigan for a long time.

He has no secrets – but you are free to look for them if you wish.

He is a relatively benign republican Neo-Con.

The only things we know about Said are past statements that he refuses to state whether he still holds those views or he does not. Calling any who even ask Bigots and rascists.

And that is just HIS past statements.

His family has long standing ties to Terrorists right through the present.

Even El Said has been supportive of Hamas in the past.

YOu can be anti-israel all you want. It makes you stupid, but not a bigot or anti-semite.

But if you are pro-hamas you support terrorism.

      1. Socialism–like paying $5,000 out of taxpayer money to each adult citizen only if Republicans win? Or, how about tax breaks and bailing out failing companies, subsidizing AI and data centers all coming out of our taxpayer money? Is that the socialism of which you speak? Or, is it things like child care and free lunches to poor kids, or Obamcare subsidies so people can have health care?

        1. Like Biden giving bribes by paying off billions in student loans?? Biden giving billions to chip companies with no return on the money? Inflation Reduction Act scam?(made inflation worse) Green energy scam? Billions to his friends/donors on phony projects? Giving everything free to illegals? Letting in 20 million unvetted illlegals? Need more ANON??

      1. Are you so stupid as top fail to grasp that it is HUMOR ?

The left has entirely lost its sense of humor.

As todays post is about Chenk Ugur’s add – I do not find the add defamatory and only marginally anti-semetic.

What is disturbing about it is that it is obviously false, it is not really trying to pretend otherwise, but it is also obviously not humor.

Or if it is – it fails miserably.

The left has lost the ability to be funny or to laugh at themselves or others.

        Obama attacked Trumps ballroom as
        “The cheesecake factory”

Trump and other embraced the attack and started putting out cheesecake factory memes or talking about the cheese cake that will be served in the new ballroom.

That is being able to laugh at yourself.

Then they responded with memes about Obama’s library.

Obama can have whatever aesthetic he wants for his library – but Trump showed that he has a sense of humor – Obama does not. The left does not.

        1. And that’s one of the messages put out by MAGA media that the oligarchs have spent so much money to set up—don’t believe mainstream media.

  13. Mr. Abdul El-Sayed is campaigning to represent the State of Michigan in the United States Senate.

This ad seems to want to blame Israel for the problems of Michiganders.

I hope viewers will recognize this naked call to scapegoat as evil. Failing that, I hope they at least recognize it as irrelevant.

I hope viewers of this ad will ask themselves, “Most people want jobs. Shouldn’t he be talking about good jobs for Michiganders? Or improving reading and math scores in Michigan? How about, fanning the spark that is increasing small business activity in Detroit?” I mean, I don’t live in Michigan, and so I don’t know the state’s specific issues.

This ad makes me think that Mr. Abdul El-Sayed doesn’t know them either.

    1. “This ad makes me think that Mr. Abdul El-Sayed doesn’t know them either.”

Seriously??? He is intelligent, broadly and well educated and accomplished, clever, with a glib tongue, who understands how to manipulate those who do not have all the facts or the gifts of rebuttal in debate with him. Success in Michigan is merely going to serve as the inception point for his journey. Due diligence regarding what he brings to the table should enlighten you to the fact he knows EXACTLY what the issues are. They, and his agenda, have NOTHING to do with Michigan.

      1. He needs to show Michigan voters that he sees THEM. Their specific, Michigan lives. The job he wants is a service job for the citizens of Michigan.

        1. “The job he wants is a service job for the citizens of Michigan.”

A service job for the citizens of Michigan is not the job he wants. It’s merely a point of entry for his mission.

      2. Oh, every federal office holder who shills for Israel is doing a disservice to America as a whole, and that is why Sayed is going to get votes, including from some Republicans who are sick of Trump hauling coal for Israel. Don’t you realize that defense is 52% of the federal discretionary budget and a lot of that spending is just to make the little zionist entity on the eastern shores of the mediterranean “safe” however hard of a task that may be, considering its dubious origins and abuse of its poor neighbors? I would vote for Sayed with pleasure. Socialist? Well, what do you think the Israelis are? National socialists for themselves, that’s what! Never bothers Trump unless it’s his ox getting gored

        1. Again, what does this have to do with Michigan? I don’t see how shilling for any Middle East entity has anything to do with Michigan. He should not run on advancing the interests of any Middle East entity. Those persons are not citizens of Michigan.

He should not look right through the citizens of the citizens of the State of Michigan, as if they were invisible. These persons are not invisible.

          1. “Again, what does this have to do with Michigan? “

Again….Success in Michigan is merely going to serve as the inception point for his journey. Due diligence regarding what he brings to the table should enlighten you to the fact he knows EXACTLY what the issues are. They, and his agenda, have NOTHING to do with Michigan. He’s not there for them. He’s there for himself and his long range agenda.

        2. ..”and a lot of that spending is just to make the little zionist entity on the eastern shores of the mediteranean “safe”..”

The geopolitical history of the post-WWII Middle East and the nations involved therein reflects far more complex issues and conflicts than the aforementioned narrow view of purpose you express. The United States’ foreign policy has been ‘hauling coal’ for that train for decades before Trump, and for cause.

        3. The ratio of military expenditure to gross domestic product is 0.038. It is as low as it has been at any time since 1940.

          ==

Israel receives via the security assistance budget credits to buy military equipment from American manufacturers. The sum is currently around $3.8 bn per year and amounts to 0.33% of the military budget.

          1. “Israel receives via the security assistance budget credits to buy military equipment from American manufacturers. The sum is currently around $3.8 bn per year and amounts to 0.33% of the military budget.”

This serves the United States global geopolitical strategy and enables it to maintain a foothold in that part of the world for cause. During the years following WWII, with our mucking around in Iran, Nassar seizing Egypt, we were in a defacto war with the USSR, by proxy, each taking sides. Today its Chinese interests which must be held at bay.

    2. The add is just stupid.

What disturbs me is that Chenk and others think it is effective.

Obama care is costing each american nearly 10 times what the Iran war is costing.

And Israels conflict with Gaza is costing americans very very little.

While absolutely Israel benefits from the US conflict with Iran – so does almost the entire mideast as well as all of europe.

One of the things that bothers many on the right the most is that the US of all developed countries benefits the least from this conflict.

It will be a long time before Iranian nukes can reach the US, and far far longer before Iran will be able to get on past US missle defenses.

All the mideast is in range of Iranian nukes – as soon as they can put a nuke on a missle. And all of europe shortly after.

Israel is a factor in this conflict – but so is the rest of the mideast, so is all of europe.

  14. (As an aside, may I respectfully add that the content of the actual campaign ad, e.g., “killing Palestinians” or “bombing Gaza,” belies the fact that it is the Palestinian terrorist organizations of Hamas, PIJ (Palestinian Islamic Jihadist), etc., that have strategically and purposely weaved themselves among schools, hospitals, civilian communities, etc.-, making their eradication virtually impossible.

The whole thing is a decades-longstanding mess, thanks to the absurd geographic partitioning- (no) thanks to the UN. https://www.eda.admin.ch/content/dam/eda/img/Laenderkarten/Palestinian_Authority_Landersite_en_Map_web.jpg/jcr:content/renditions/cq5dam.thumbnail.588.368.png

    1. “(As an aside, may I respectfully add..”

You can bang your head against the wall, pursuing this argument, but you won’t succeed in convincing the deniers one iota. In fact, you can take it back to the end of WWI, and the machinations of Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Greece, the Arabs and Turks in carving up the Ottoman Empire and the sequelae of same. It wouldn’t help. The understanding of the geopolitical history of this region of the world, by the average citizen, is pathetic.

    2. I agree with you, except the terrorism against Jews predates the parcelling out of the Ottoman Empire.

Antisemitism is a core principle in the Quran.

The land of Judea has been conquered by various empires, and the Jews refused to convert to the dominant religion. Most recently, the Jews had been living as dhimmis under the Ottoman Empire. Muslims will not accept a Jewish state anywhere.

      1. “I agree with you, except the terrorism against Jews predates the parceling out of the Ottoman Empire.”

That goes without saying, for those in the know. For example, the Jewish community was persecuted in Poland in the 10th Century, up to and including the clothing they were permitted to wear, so as not to be confused with non-Jews.

The Tanzimat Reforms eliminated the policy of dhimmis and created equal standing for all Ottoman subjects. The history of pre-WWI land acquisitions in that region by Jewish interests is a whole other chapter. All of that was ‘blown up’ when the world went to war and set it on the course which led to the present day.

As I’ve said: “The understanding of the geopolitical history of this region of the world, by the average citizen, is pathetic.’
