Baltimore police are in the process of arresting a 58-year-old man who argued with his son in church about the 19-year-olds refusal to take his hat off. The father then proceeded to stab his son in the left buttock.

San Diego Catholics are protesting a decision by San Diego Bishop Robert Brom to ask Pastor Richard Perozich to tone it down after he ran a rabid article entitled “100 Days or End of Days?” in the parish bulletin of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Escondido. Fr. Perozich appears to believe that Obama will be unleashing such things as “homogenital sex.”
As this picture indicates, religious activists have made great strides into breaking into inter-species faith-based initiatives.

The Vatican has filed a formal complaint with the Israeli government about a private Israeli TV show that it claims blasphemed Jesus and Mary. On the program, the host challenges the idea that Mary was a virgin and Jesus walked on water as a “lesson” for Christians who deny the Holocaust. The host was upset about the Pope lifting the excommunication of a bishop who denied the holocaust. The Israeli government’s response, however, is worse than both the program and the objection.

There is a story that is roaring over the Internet that seems like a hoax. A website Adnkronos reported yesterday that Saudi imam Mohammed al-Najimi A Saudi imam has issued a fatwa or religious edict banning the use of alcohol as a fuel substitute for petrol. While I am always fascinated by fatwas, I did not run the story because it seems to me to be a hoax, even quoting a Saudi daily called “Shams.” Yet, various sites have picked up the story today.

Mohammed Fagirad, 30, a vice consul at the Afghanistan Consulate, in New York has been arrested for beating his 22-year-old wife for 15 hours in their Queens home. Police report that Fagirad told them that his “wife was a dog and he was going to treat her like a dog,”

There seems to be an endless series of theories as to what occurred 9-11. Homosexuality, Israel, abortion, and other causes have been cited by religious groups. Given those theories, it is perhaps not so surprising that Scientology has come to claim its standard villains: psychiatrists.

Pakistan appears to have end the conflict with the Taliban but yielding to their extremist demands in northwest Pakistan. Under a new accord, Islamic rule will be allowed in the region and Pakistan will back off from its attempt to control the region. The result will likely increase the violence in Afghanistan and power of the Taliban.

A judge in Muncie, Indiana has accepted a plea of guilty in a bizarre case involving a white supremacist and Satan worshiper who turned a prior hearing into chaos by shouting “Heil Hitler” and “White Power” at the judge before being held in contempt. Dmitriy V. Sklyarov, 20, has now pleaded guilty to biting a 9-year-old child 13 times on the arms and legal in October.

Muzzammil Hassan, 44, the founder of an Islamic television station in New York, has been charged with beheading of his wife, Aasiya Hassan, 37. Ironically, Hassan founded the Bridges TV station in Buffalo to dispel stereotypes of Muslims and has now contributed to such stereotypes in his alleged murder of his wife. She was murdered at the Bridges television offices.

Students of Hampshire College are complaining of harassing or intimidating telephone calls. Nothing new there, such calls can be common particularly when the students are leading a political cause. Yet, the alleged caller was Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz, who they claim was upset over their effort to get the school to divest from Israel. They allege that Dershowitz (who had a child go to Hampshire) has been calling students and threatening to organize a boycott of the school.

Jonathan Lopez has filed a lawsuit against a professor and Los Angeles City College over his treatment after giving a speech on the Christian view of marriage in speech class. Lopez alleges that Professor John Matteson had made it clear that he supported same-sex marriage. He claims that Matteson allegedly attacked him verbally, refused let him complete his speech, effectively called him a “fascist bastard” and refused to give him a grade (telling him to “ask God” for his grade).

In Patna, eight members of a family where shot, beheaded, and thrown into a river after Ratan Mandal, 21, a poor villager, married Kanchan Kumari, 18, above his caste in secret. Fifteen people from the wealthy girl’s family have been charged.

England continues to use criminal laws and travel bans to punish individuals for controversial speech. One such controversial writer, Dutch politician Geert Wilders, now says that he is going to try to get into the country despite a ban to contest the use of such laws to punish free speech. He was invited to visit the country by a member of Parliament.

In yet another crackdown on free speech over criticism of a religion, the editor and publisher of The Statesman has been arrested for running an article that contains material insulting to Muslims. The Statesman’s editor Ravindra Kumar and publisher Anand Sinha were arrested in Calcutta.
