University of Louisville Pays Professor $1.6 Million in Free Speech Case

We previously discussed the case of Dr. Allan Josephson, who was effectively terminated after he criticized transgender ideology and went on to secure an impressive victory for free speech before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Now, the University of Louisville has agreed to pay almost $1.6 million in damages and attorneys’ fees to settle the six-year-old lawsuit. While the university issued a statement that it has nothing further to say, donors and others should have many questions that need to be answered by a university that spent millions fighting against free speech. In the meantime, the fight for free speech seems to be heating up for another academic at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Crimson Chide: Harvard Makes the Case Against Itself

Below is my column in The Hill on Harvard faculty organizing in opposition to the Trump Administration’s measures targeting the university for failure to protect Jewish students and its lack of diversity of viewpoints on campus. Despite being a vocal critic of Harvard’s culture of orthodoxy, I have encouraged the Administration to moderate some of these measures and oppose the denial of tax-exempt status of the university. However, the Harvard faculty members may want to sit this one out. They are not helping their cause.

Here is the column:

Triggered by Teslas? The Left Rationalizes Political Violence as the Fault of the Right

Natasha Cohen, 46, is a New York therapist who appears to be stuck in the denial stage of Kübler-Ross. After she was arrested in the latest case of political violence by the left, Cohen blamed Elon Musk for her actions, saying that she is “living in terror every day.” The rationalization is becoming a familiar refrain as the rise in political violence becomes undeniable. On Friday, New York Times Chief White House Correspondent and MSNBC Political Analyst Peter Baker came under fire for admitting that leftist violence is on the rise, but noting that Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric “might excite people to take action.” Continue reading “Triggered by Teslas? The Supreme Court Halts Venezuelan Deportations as the Fourth Circuit Upholds Garcia Order

It has been a busy 24 hours in the courts. Early this morning, the Supreme Court blocked (for now) the deportations of any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under the Alien Enemies Act, a law only used three times before in our history. At the same time, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit upheld the lower court’s order in the case of Abrego Garcia.

“When Must We Kill Them?”: George Mason Student Captures the Growing Violent Ideation on the Left

There is controversy at George Mason University after Nicholas Decker, an economics PhD student published an essay asking “When Must We Kill Them?” in reference to Trump and his supporters. The essay captures the growing violent ideation on the left, fueled by rage rhetoric from politicians and commentators. The danger is that, for some on the extremes of our society, the question is not “when must we kill them?” but “when can we kill them?”

Washington State University Instructor Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting Trump Supporter

We have been following the rise of political violence on the left, particularly on our campuses. Some of this violence has been committed by faculty and administrators, as was recently the case at the University of Wisconsin. A video shows Washington State University instructor and PhD student Patrick Mahoney allegedly assaulting engineering student Jay Sani for wearing a Trump-related hat. “GEC is Dead”: Rubio Shuts Down Censorship Program that the Biden Administration Claimed was Ended

For years, I have written about the Global Engagement Center (GEC) in columns and my book, The Indispensable Right. It was one of the hubs of the censorship network under the Biden Administration, which claimed it was shut down after Congress cut off funding. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio just announced that he has terminated the office, which was operating under a different name (a familiar tactic by the anti-free speech movement). No, Harvard Should Not Lose its Tax-Exempt Status

As many on this blog know, I have been one of the most vocal critics of Harvard and its history of viewpoint intolerance and attacks on free speech. That includes dozens of columns, a book, and a debate at Harvard Law School denouncing the purging of Harvard’s faculty and student body of Republicans and conservatives. I hope that this work offers some context and perhaps credibility for my reason for writing this morning: the threats to remove Harvard’s tax-exempt status are fundamentally wrong. Such a move would produce lasting damage to both to higher education and the country as a whole. Continue reading “No, Harvard Should Not Lose its Tax-Exempt Status”

Judge to Trump Administration: I Feel Unfacilitated

Screenshot

After the Supreme Court ruling in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, I wrote a column disagreeing with the media coverage that claimed that the Trump Administration was ordered to return Garcia to the United States from El Salvador. The Administration mistakingly sent Garcia to a foreign prison. However, the Court only ordered that the Administration “facilitate” such a return, a term it failed to define. Now, U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis is indicating that she feels unfacilitated, but it is unclear how a court should address this curious writ of facilitation.

“No One is Above the Law”: New York AG Letitia James Accused of Alleged Mortgage Fraud

C-Span Screenshot

Below is my column in the New York Post on the criminal referral of a mortgage fraud case against New York Attorney General Letitia James. After her scorched-earth campaign against Trump, the irony of the allegations is stunning. If James were to move from prosecutor to perp, her own words may come back to haunt her. There could be statute of limitations issues, though James herself showed such such statutory periods can be stretched. James has issued a statement of defiance and suggests that this is lawfare or bullying by the Trump Administration.

Federal Judge Halts Trump Administration’s Deportation of Half a Million Biden “Parolees”

The intense struggle between the Trump Administration and federal judges continued this week with another court ordering a halt to a nationwide program. In Massachusetts, District Judge Indira Talwani is preventing President Donald Trump from canceling a Biden program granting parole and the right to work to immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela (CHNV). Judge Talwani’s order would require individual hearings for the half of a million individuals allowed into the country under this program by President Joe Biden.

Biden’s Administration May Have Suppressed COVID Evidence Contradicting Chinese Claims

Below is my column in the Hill on recent disclosure that the Biden Administration may have withheld evidence contradicting the Chinese on the origins of COVID. Millions of Americans lost loved ones and would like to know who was responsible. It appears that our government and many experts were less motivated to find that answer.

Here is the column: Continue reading “Biden’s Administration May Have Suppressed COVID Evidence Contradicting Chinese Claims”

Lincoln Memorial University Sanctions Student for Telling Trump Supporters to “Unfollow” Her

There is a disturbing free speech controversy at Lincoln Memorial University’s College of Veterinary Medicine after the school accused student Erin Lintag of violating the school’s code of conduct by telling President Donald Trump supporters to “unfollow” her. It is a direct assault on free speech and should be immediately withdrawn with a commitment to prevent such actions in the future.
