Obama: We Must Uphold Our Principles To Be Safe and Strong

225px-official_portrait_of_barack_obamaSpeaking to the graduating class of U.S. Naval Academy, President Barack Obama told the graduates that the best way to protect our nation is to stand up to its principles. I discussed the detainee issue last night on this segment of Countdown.

President Obama stated: “We uphold our fundamental principles and values not just because we choose to, but because we swear to — not because they feel good, but because they help keep us safe, . . . When America strays from our values, it not only undermines the rule of law, it alienates us from our allies, it energizes our adversaries and it endangers our national security and the lives of our troops.”

If only the White House would match its actions to its rhetoric, this country would be able to regain our moral and legal leadership in this troubled world. He needs to guarantee a trial for all detainees and to investigate the U.S. torture program.

  1. Buddha,

I assure you it was not me in Drag. I can assure you I only found this Blawg about 2/3 months ago. I see that there are others who use anonn or some variation there of. I think you can rest assured that I am very direct and see no reason to hide what I have to say. So there ya go.

  2. AY,

Gaging by the response, I doubt that was the real Patty. I suspected as much when I replied. The non-sequitor about my sister’s friend? Contextual nonsense that actually tilts me even further from thinking it’s the real Patty. She’s hardheaded, not stupid. That assault was weak – too weak to be the real Patty absent some supervening factor like drunkenness or head trauma. She’s seen my warface and would know that was insufficient. If it was her? Well, she’s about killed any credibility she had with me with her escalating personal attacks against Jill (vs. attacking her methods ala Mike) anyway. If an appeal to authority and saying I’m controlling is the best she’s got, let’s just say I’m not raising my DefCon level.

If it was you pretending to be her again, quit acting like a douche bag. Because if it was? I will ask JT to boot you for highjacking an identity. You want to talk troll behavior? That’s a big no-no. Since you’ve confessed once before to baiting while disguised as Patty and it was more in line with your writing style, I’m not ruling it out. In fact, it would remind me of someone who used to be here but is no longer. An agent provocateur to drive a wedge in here is a not unknown troll tactic. I’ve done it myself on right wing sites I was disrupting.

And as for what I was waiting for earlier?

I was waiting for those of you being difficult in this thread to stop acting like bickering children.

I come here for fun. This is a hobby I can do between real work. I have no issue with walking away once it ceases to be fun. If I do walk away, it’ll be my choice or at JT’s request, not some churlish troll’s provocation, but if I had wanted children I would have had children instead of cats and dogs.

  3. Buddha Is Not Laughing,

She went and done it and one it good.

    FF LEO,

Can you use your PD powers? lol

  4. Buddha,

    I can’t read your shit.

You are WAY out of wack, my friend…

You and your friend’s sister definitely need a smidge of help, for sure.

    Good luck.

  5. Patty,

Or should I say Ms. He’s Playing A Deeper Game Than You Can Fathom YET Again.

Yeah, Patty, I heard you about the the first 20 times you’ve thrown that little bon mot of logic. Talk about a broken record.

    Are you a cabinet member?

    No?

Then what is that claim of superior knowledge based upon? Are you privy to Presidential planning? Jesus Himself give you the line on that bit of truth, Patty? Who clued you and yours to THE DIVINE PLAN OF OBAMA TO RESTORE CONSTITUTIONAL JUSTICE? Was it the Ghosts of Your Ancestors granting you sublime knowledge from beyond the grave? Because that sounds an awful lot like you should be wearing polyester and telling me I’ll suffer eternal damnation if I don’t tithe adequately as well as have proper faith. Unless you are sitting in on his meetings, you’re expecting a lot on faith and suggesting that I do so as well.

    Yeah. Riiiigght.

He’s a politician, not the messiah. I trust him to do the right thing without constantly being ridden about it just about as far as I can throw the Pentagon.

And I’ll tell you something about patience. Better than that. I’ll ask you something about patience.

Has it ever occurred to you that the perception of impatience is a goal in itself, genius?

Maybe you’re reading Obama’s and my mind now? That would explain A LOT! You’re a mind reader! What an UNPARALLELED talent! Susan Boyle hasn’t got squat on you, Psychic Girl! You should go to AC for the weekend!

Modesty doesn’t stop you from trying to define victory for a battle you aren’t even making the tactical calls for either . . . a control issue over how and why I post as I do. Tsk tsk tsk, Ms. Pot! I guess you’re not so psychic after all. And your personally directed snark was delivered in such a lovely package.

Now run along. Brush up on the differences between acerbic and snotty. Unless you were thinking that’s being controlling. Oh no! Not that! I was going for dismissive. 🙁 Cursed English!

    But seriously.

Run along if that argument from appeal to authority and your dime store analysis of me is the best you’ve got. That’s weak. I expect better from you. Unless expectations are being controlling too in which case I expect nothing from you.

Please feel free to decide upon which you deliver.

  6. Buddha is Not Laughing,

Failure to prosecute, however, for whatever reason, simply invalidates the Federal government.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That is the eternally screwed up essence of what Bush and Co. accomplished, you pissant.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I have observed, Buddha, you are not a patient person and that is the reason I see you as ‘controlling’ in most situations where you obviously lack absolute control
    ****************************************************

This ones for you, Buddha. ROFLMAO

  7. Failure to prosecute, however, for whatever reason, simply invalidates the Federal government.

No, the Federal Government ie the Executive branch has been simultaneously both empowered by Bush and Co. AND invalidated, only more so, in their absence, under Obama.

He should hold on to all the power that he has until we all can turn.

Look at the Independent Council Act ie why it started and how it ended up.

Better to be ‘ahead’ than behind the mark, I always say and yet I still find resistance to that very obvious same notion.

In possibly more than the few respects you espouse and even farther than you are so far able to fathom, that’s the way things need to be played for now.

That is the eternally screwed up essence of what Bush and Co. accomplished, you pissant.

HEY, ‘unfair’ IS still ‘fair’, RIGHT…? ;P

They changed the travel itinerary over two terms and it will take a while to correct course. Thus the ship analogy.

I have observed, Buddha, you are not a patient person and that is the reason I see you as ‘controlling’ in most situations where you obviously lack absolute control

We are ‘all in the same boat’, as it were.

The Reverend Bartlebee has a few miles on you already.
Oh WAIT, that’s right – that was you an entire year ago…!!!

Some things will never change with the exception of, maybe, this:

When you have a spare moment, JT, I would like you to remove all postings by whomever has been signing on under ‘Patty C.’
this past week, in particular, and beyond..

I continue despite being continually hounded and harassed.
    Thanks!

This is me not you. I wish JT would remove all offensive posts that you have made as well as all rude comments of mine. As far as Patty C. I don’t care. But I still think they are funny who ever did it. You have my blessings, please enlighten us again.

I don’t think anyone on here enjoys being harassed if they have a different view as you or do not write right or well enough for your Harvard Blueblooded learning or was it a course rudeness101? Do not comment on others posts where you have created a hostile situation, Patty C All The Time. Is this the one with a Period or not?

  10. Buddha:

“However, I would like to ask you if that’s truly your stance on torture.”

I am against torture period, it has no place in a civilized society for any reason. But when talking to people that are where I was a few months ago on the issue I put it to them in terms that initially made sense to me. It took me awhile to wrap my mind around waterboarding as torture as you well know.

  11. CCD,

Apparently you don’t understand the meaning of the word fight. 🙁 Seriously, thanks for the Matthew Alexander link, I think that given his experience he has more credibility talking about this than just about anyone else. (Although Mancow catapulted himself into that rarified air by having more integrity and guts in his little finger than all of Dick the war criminal’s crew put together!) I really need to pick up Alexander’s book after I finish “The Dark Side” by Jane Mayer.

    Buddha,

My comment about fading away was meant as a warning of what needs to be avoided, not a prediction – I don’t want to light the powder, I want to achieve critical mass and go nooklear on their butts! I think that Bron is exactly right about educating people (of course since I work at home and my colleagues are research scientists – a pretty liberal bunch – who all pretty much agree that torture is bad already, I don’t have much opportunity for effective teaching…). I do have a question for you though: TCB? I guess I don’t know my TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) as well as I should.

  12. Am I a turlee, please oh please I want to be trulee a turlee too. Oh I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Weiver.

  13. AY,

Thanks for being an enabler. Remember what your Mom said, “scratching only makes it worse.”

I said the other evening that I think you ‘get it’, but then again, I may have spoken too soon.

I call Jill out all the time. She doesn’t respond anymore because she can’t do that and still ‘keep going and going and going…’
For one thing, it would require removing those ’stuck’ fingers.

And then I saw this response of yours to her.
“My compliant with you is that sometimes you seem more interested in climbing on your soapbox or picking a fight than engaging in debate (although you certainly aren’t the only one guilty of this).”

‘Soapbox’ is precisely the word I, and occasionally a couple of other turlees, have used for an entire year since ‘the fight’ started and not just with regard to her anti-Obama sentiments.

So maybe you do understand, after all.

    What’s the difference between a pit-bull and hockey-Mom?
    It ain’t lipstick…
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Your Comment was totally uncalled for, unless you are trying to make it All about Patty C all the time. Then you have not succeeded. No one cares to read your posting or if they do, they pass it by as mean spirited fluff.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So which do you prefer being in the next life the Hockey-Mom or the Pit-Bull?

  15. Bron,

I was referring to lack of action in official capacity. As far as people around me? I tend to grow on people. I’m also a different kind of persuasive in person. I get a kick out of watching someone having a good idea even if I have to plant it myself. I do engage in a high degree of target selection. I know some people are either 1) too time intensive, 2) unwilling to learn/in denial, or 3) educating them is simply impolitic or otherwise impractical for maintaining a necessary and/or ongoing relationship, then I avoid the subject of politics. People often mistake the issues of politics for the issues of law. Some can be disabused of this mistake, some cannot. My objections are legal foremost. Crimes were committed. Egregious treason that threatens the heart of our legal system and protect us from tyranny and bad men who would see everyone suffer for their personal profit. Given my previous statements concerning the importance of the Declaration, that my politics are informed by this is only as natural as the rain. It’s also why I am staunchly anti-/non-partisan.

However, I would like to ask you if that’s truly your stance on torture.

  17. Buddha:

be patient, it is going to have get into the minds of the rank and file. Sites like this one educate people and then they educate others through daily contact. It may take 6 months a year, 2 years but eventually you will have critical mass.

Do you talk about it during the work day to colleagues? I do when I have the chance, I just tell them torture is not the issue and that I dont care if Abu Jimmyjaw got water poured up his nose. But I do care about an executive with too much power and lawyers paving the way for him to do what he pleases, then I tell them that Hitler did the same thing with his lawyers. Most of the time the light goes on. People understand tyranny and an out of control federal government, conservatives are 85% there already but they dont care that some terrorist got wet.

Maybe I use that argument because that is the one that really sank home to me personally. When I saw it in that light, the bell rang and I said now I understand what you guys are talking about.

Well this was rather presumptive wasnt it?

  18. Slarti,

I have no issue as long as the powder is eventually lit. Failure to prosecute, however, for whatever reason, simply invalidates the Federal government. Either the Constitution applies to everyone or no one. Those are the stakes and the reason why the guilty must get their due. They didn’t rob a bank. They violated the core document upon which our entire legal system is founded. Fading out is not an option unless your goal is the ultimate failure of our system. Unlike you, however, I am not very pleased with the pressure being applied to this point. Too little, too slow. Call me a cynic, but I see a lot more CYA than I do TCB. But since justice is our common goal, it’s not worth arguing about until action must be taken – one way or another.

  19. Yes, agreed Slartibartfast. Ten days ago or so you won me over to ‘keeping the powder dry, but the heat on’. Which requires patience on my part and faith that a majority of Americans needs torture in our name investigated.

Matthew Alexander is doing his part. He shredded Dick Chaney’s latest public appearance.

Examining the history of how we arrived here is important as well. Cheney and Rumsfeld allegedly had the CIA under G H Bush lying through their teeth.

Thank you for this site JT. You and the folks who post regularly are true stalwarts and defenders of the Constitution. Malleable maroons like myself are looking for the truth.
