American Taliban: Meet Michael Voris

Meet Michael Voris who believes that the country needs a dictator who is “benevolent” and most importantly a Catholic. Voris advocates Catholic rule for the nation in this video, which surprisingly does not appear to be a joke.

Voris’s call for a “benevolent dictatorship” of a Catholic ruler is part of a video that has gone viral on the Internet. He is the founder of St. Michael’s Media and the star of a series on “The One True Faith.” He is described as a former seminarian and CBS anchor, who has won multiple Emmys for his work in broadcast news production.

Voris graduated from Notre Dame in 1983 with a degree in Communications and concentrated studies in history and politics. Equally impressive is his theological education. He not only trained as a young man in theology at the doctrinally-sound St. Joseph’s Seminary in New York, but in April of 2009, he received his Sacred Theology Baccalaureate (STB) from Sacred Heart Major Seminary/Angelicum in Rome – Magna Cum Laude.

At some point, he appears to have developed a taste for dictatorship and theocratic government.

  4. IGNORANCE AND RELIGIOUS IDOLATRY ARE VERY MUCH ALIVE IN THIS SPIRITUALLY BLINDED PERSON…………SO MR. VORIS ONLY CATHOLICS, AND CATHOLICS OF YOUR APPROVAL, ARE TO BE THE INTELLENGENCIA OF OUR COUNTRY…. AND ALL OTHERS ARE WHAT????

  5. This guy really is the epitome of the “American Taliban”. He doesn’t mind having a dictator as long as it is a Catholic one. I may be mistaken because it has been quite a few years, but I can remember the good Benedictine Nuns teaching us that Jesus taught us that the government should stick to government stuff and that religions should stick to the religious stuff. Of course, they said it alot better than I just did!

Considering where we ended up after the ignorant masses put Obama in office, it might be a nice (real) “change”.

as opposed to the five wise and washed people who installed George the younger into office.

  7. I have met precious few people in my life so deserving of absolute ridicule. That guy is crazy.

Wonder if he knows Bhudda Is Laughing at him?

  8. How long until my mother-in-law stumbles onto this guy… I suspect she’d love this stuff (well. maybe not the anti-democracy part, but definitely the Catholic conservative/evangelical part…)

But seriously, Dominionism is supported, to varying degrees, by many, many Americans. “Sure, we got that Constitution, but you can’t get all mixed up by what words is in it. It really means that we should follow God’s Law. So, we ain’t got to get rid of the Constitution, we just got to understand that it really means whatever I want it to mean, cuz God’s Law is whatever I want it to be at this moment.”

What do they think of Sharia? Oh, it’s not Christian, so it’s bad, mmmmkay? Christian religious law is good, Muslim religious law is bad.

The “Oklahoma International Law Amendment” will appear on the November 2, 2010 general election ballot. I’m having a hard time finding the exact wording, but the idea seems to be to single out “Sharia” and “international laws” as prohibited. The idea is that judges in Oklahoma would be prohibited from referring to either of these in their rulings.

For many readers of this blog, this will seem pretty stupid. Obviously, the ban shouldn’t single out Sharia legal theory, it should prohibit any religious legal system as being the basis of an Oklahoma state court ruling.

And where do these geniuses think US law came from? Oh, right, they think that Jesus appeared to the founders on a beam of light and dictated the Declarational Bill of Independence Constitution Rights to them, especially the Second Amendment (which is Jesus’ favorite amendment!) Everyone else thinks that the framers of the Constitution and our legal system looked to many foreign precedents, such as ancient Greece and Rome, and to contemporary legal systems like those in the UK and even (gasp!) France! (Let’s not speak too loudly about the atheist/humanist Enlightenment ideas that are also at the root of the Constitution. sssshhhh!)

These folks are also probably a bit fuzzy on the Constitutional weight of ratified Treaties….

  9. Man, this video should go over great with the Southern Baptists and Evangelical Lutherans….hahahaha

  10. This guy is mostly harmless. But, of course:

    http://www.theocracywatch.org/dominionism.htm

“Dominionism and Dominion Theology are not denominations or faith groups. Rather, they are interrelated beliefs which are followed by members of a wide range of Christian denominations.

In his article on dominionism, researcher and author Chip Berlet credits sociologist Sara Diamond with popularizing the term dominionism as “a growing political tendency in the Christian Right.” Diamond defined dominionism in 1995 as:

Christians alone are Biblically mandated to occupy all secular institutions until Christ returns–and there is no consensus on when that might be.

“Dominionism,” Berlet writes, “is .. a tendency among Protestant Christian evangelicals and fundamentalists that encourages them to not only be active political participants in civic society, but also seek to dominate the political process as part of a mandate from God.”

    Oy vay.

  11. I was going to mention odious stupidity, but frankdawg took the words right out of my mouth, er, fingers.

  12. I wonder how this dipstick feels about Sharia law. He is once again proving that no one religion has the corner on odiously stupid. Each one has some number of crackpots who know the only way to save us is to do exactly what they say.

  13. Scarecrow,

I prefer the phrase “unwashed masses,” although “clamorous philistines” has a nice xenophobic undercurrent that really speaks to today’s politics. “Ignorant masses” just seems to lack the poetry needed for really good rhetoric.

    Maybe I’m just picky.

  14. Considering where we ended up after the ignorant masses put Obama in office, it might be a nice (real) “change”.
